I’ve been a LTL driver for 6 years and Im going for owner operator possibly by the end of this year or early next year. Currently doing my homework on the business and equipment. Very informative 👍🏼
Ryan for a guy that has only been a O/O for a few years your well seasoned in this business. And your absolutely right as these trucks get more advanced they will make it harder to delete things on the semi.
Listen to the man, with 23 years as owner operator I've been there done that. Just remember one thing, just because you buy new truck 160k or more, does not mean shippers will pay you more than a used 40k, 50k, 60k used truck. And even before buying the rig, make sure you have work for that truck.
Make sure you have work. What do you explain more? Like how do you make sure you have work for something before you have it? I’m ask because I’m getting into the trucking game & im just thinking load boards
I always believed Cummins truly is for the "working man" that's why they don't charge for service info and they want that relationship to be GREAT. . . so that you'll come back and buy a newer truck down the road when/if you need to. EXCELLENT business model 👏 👌
Thanks Ryan, because of you and your channel (this video in particular) I made a good purchase on my 1st. truck. I made sure that I purchased a truck with an APU installed since it went into service. 2ndly. I ensured to have a pre purchase inspection (3rd. party technician present) done on the truck before I signed the deal.👍🏾 The truck has 627,839 miles, with engine hours of 13,339.55 thanks to the APU. Technically, if the truck didn't have an APU, the engine hours might've been in the lower 20,000's. With hours within the 20,000-25,000 range, I'd have little to no time before the truck would require a rebuild. Again, thanks for your content.
Something that needs to be mentioned, just because you have a Cummins in a Kenworth doesn’t mean you can go to a Peterbilt for repairs, especially if they need ECM programming. I learned the hard way. I had to pay Peterbilt AND THEN Kenworth to uninstall the Peterbilt program and then update the Kenworth program in my 2020 T680.
I live in the Chicago area and would love to be able to connect up with someone honest and as knowledge as you are. I'm a company driver without any mechanical abilities which is my barrier to becoming owner/operator. I love your channel and enjoy watching although much of what you share is a little over my head. Wish you all the continued success and God bless.
As long as you can do the little stuff, like change out a light and replace a wiper blade or a mudflap, you can do ok. The little stuff is where they really stick it to you. The big stuff, yeah the labor is expensive, but if they can get you back on the road a couple days quicker than you could do yourself, then you can make that extra money right back with the extra days of driving. You just want to have a knowledgeable hometown mechanic to serve as a base, maybe you can call once in a while for advice or something, and if you pay close attention to Google reviews when selecting a shop on the road, you can eliminate quite a few headaches. I try to always shoot for at least a 4 star rating out of 5, but they have to have at least like 25 reviews before that number starts to carry any weight. And that's another thing about little jobs - if you have to wait 3 hours to change a lightbulb, you're also getting killed on the time, in addition to the astronomical labor. Fifty bucks for a 3 minute job is like $1000 per hour, plus you waited 3 hours to get in. But if you wait 3 hours to get in for a big job that they can knock out in 4 hours where it'd take you 3 days, then you're not in real bad shape.
U just gotta get into it like its your personal car, or your race car …start separating everything and it super simplifies everything. Mechanical, electrical, engine, trans, etc
Best thing to do if buying a used Semi is to take it to a competent mechanic shop for a full inspection, but it helps if you're already a mechanic and know exactly what to look for... Good stuff!
Thank you so much you are the most informative person I have found on the internet awesome dude I was thinking of becoming an owner operator and I still am thank you
I spotted the advert a few days ago. I quickly realized that you decided to sell your truck. I am very curious about what drove you to take this decision, considering the new gearbox.
@@truckingandfixing is $23,000 too much a 2013 Volvo dnl 670 d13 engine 10speed Eaton transmission with 633k miles it was fleet maintained and it has 21,264 engine hours on it they sent me a video of the truck running its sounds good.
I’m like you I’d rather have good equipment than cheap equipment, you spend a little more but in the long run it’s worth it especially when it comes to safety. Great video
I was in a traffic jam of mostly trucks on an uphill grade because a truck got stuck on the ice. A tow truck towed it out of the way, then everyone could get going, then I passed 3 stuck trucks with wheels spinning, all with supersingles. I believe the reason supersingles didn't exist on otr trucks until 15 years ago is because they lack traction, and are, therefore, unsafe.
The main thing I worry about in a used truck is head gasket leaks. I know there are drivers who over RPM the engine while jaking either intentionally or they don't know what that does to the head gasket. I don't want any issues like that which can make the heating system in the cab wonky. How do we find out if that is the case on a used truck?
Great video! I've been running non-CDL hotshot the past few years and just got my CDL-A. I want to move up to a semi, but can't afford much right now. Was looking to up my weight and length to CDL levels but even the older 450's and 550's that run my favorite 7.3 Powerstrokes cost as much as an old semi. And I could get a 48' flatbed cheaper than a 40' gooseneck, not to mention that the loads available for flatbed semi are far FAR more plentiful! Decisions decisions...

Well, I differ Any time is a good time to buy a truck. Depends where you buy it and or if you will finance it or buy it cash. As long as you have a good hook up, that will pay good money to haul their freight. No problem.

Cool video one of the problems with using a manual these days is that the CDL schools on his schools are using trucks with automatic only transmissions so then when you take the test you get a restriction on your license even if you know how to run a manual.

I'd like to get your thoughts on restarting a 1999 truck; run in the S. West. Is it to costly to restart up a truck that's been out of service for 5 yrs.? It has 50 gals of old diesel in it alone; I read I'd have to have drained out. One shop said it probably needs new wheel seals that'll cost $1,200 to do just on the tractor. Of course I need batteries, too. What else may have to be done? The tractor is a 1999 KW t200, DD 12.7, with 1M on it. I put new alt, tires, brakes, kingpins & of course reg. service. My 2007 flatbed has a mere 75,000 miles on it. I drove a couple yrs during construction season. I shut it all down in 2015 do to crazy drivers & DOT "New Entrant" harassment. (I've been thinking about getting back in because rates seem much better now). There would probably be problems with trailer setting, too. Thx for all your vids. PS the only thing I do on may own is service; for many reasons. (My alternative is to buy a used truck with 500k miles, if they are available; for $52k). Thx.
How's it going... I really appreciate your knowledge and videos... so I wanted to know what specs should I look for when hauling overweight loads? Thanks
Hey Ryan I heard you speak about hours vs mileage and I’m novice to the trucking industry and I was wondering how do you find out how many hours does a semi truck has? Thanks in advance
Would you unplug connectors and squirt dielectric gel into the connection and re plug in? (to prevent corrosion of the pins) Or that would be bad or that would be good but paying a mechanic hundreds to gel connections is more than the eventual repairs.
If you could install an 2 or 3 speed differential which gear setups would you go with and why ? Do you know about skip shifting ? When you're carrying a small load it allows you to skip gears like with a shift pattern of 2 4 6 8 10 . Though I don't know if that's good or bad on the power train specifically the cluch . So I'm not saying to do skip shifting but I can't stop you . I actually learned that with Swift 20 years ago by accident . Tried it on my personal POV but got a lot of gear chatter which then assumed it was a bad thing to do but later on relised that diesel truck transmissions aren't identical to gas transmissions ; although i tried it on an box truck with an diesel engine and got the same results as my POV . Although i bet with your 18 speed you can skip two gears at a time and maybe with a load up to 19,500 lbs or maybe more. I'm thinking for a 3 speed diff gear ratios of 1.73 , 2.73 , and 3.73 would work great in an on-road semi . 1.73 for no load or a very light load , 3.73 for heavy loads and hill climbing , and with the 2.73 falling somewhere in-between hopefully automatic switching to make things easier . Sounds very expensive , might not be worth it though . Let me know what you think . Thanks !

Can you work like a 23 ft box straight truck and get the FedEx or mail work?
Hey Ryan I heard you speak about hours vs mileage and I’m novice to the trucking industry and I was wondering how do you find out how many hours does a semi truck has? Thanks in advance
You can get the engine hours from your dash.
@@truckingandfixing Thanks for answering this question.
Year 11-14 trucks always have problems with the dpf systems though.
I’d consider buying that truck but I noticed that blue lid just behind the drivers door.
I would love to own your truck. I wish I was ready
Love your videos.. keep making more :)
All very used information. Thank you.
Hey I got a truck it’s 06 kenworth t2000 and it won’t start I was replaced the starter and starter relay, battery
Would you unplug connectors and squirt dielectric gel into the connection and re plug in? (to prevent corrosion of the pins)
Or that would be bad or that would be good but paying a mechanic hundreds to gel connections is more than the eventual repairs.
The rubber seals do not put on the metal connects or pins, it can cause you to loss connection.
@@truckingandfixing I said "Di-electric GEL, not rubber????
Thanks !
What Think about 02 or 04 freightliner cascadia with 1,200,000 miles as my first truck
