What's in a Name?

  • Often critics of the Church engage in misrepresentation as the most common tactic. In the case of Keith Walker it's difficult to tell whether it's ineptitude or dishonesty. Either way, they fail to listen, read or understand carefully and reach absurd conclusions as a result. Paying closer attention to the available materials presented as well being more careful is the best way to respond to a critic who misrepresents the sources to make a point that those sources don't support.
Pay close attention to the dates of the clips as well the fact Church leaders have long emphasized use of the proper name by members. Even if we call ourselves "Mormons".

I don't know what we did to get this frequency of videos from Travis, but I'm absolutely here for it. Another great video!

This was a topic that I didn’t have an answer for when someone would bring it up so thank you for clarifying and explaining it.

Dear Keith Walker, I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Billy Graham saved you in 1988. You can keep your church of Billy Graham, it sounds like your cult leader Billy Graham was clearly at the head of it, instead of Jesus Christ.

Imagine insisting to call a group a name they did not call themselves, and was created from hatred, just because "oh well the last guy didnt have a problem with it?"
Now apply that to any other slur or nickname of another group without coming off like someone who is prejudiced
I mean, come on? Cant you be internally consistent? Go ahead, say them.

The native Americans themselves are releasing their records. The nemenhah records (book, second complete edition). The ojibwe nation/book of Mormon conference. They shared thier records and thier records are now undergoing translation. Thier dna results were shared too. Worth a look and a read.

    • @mrflynn510
      @mrflynn510 9 часов назад +4

@germanslice it's a sermon series that he does. His pitch is that repented is impossible, therefore, the Gospel, as presented by the Church, is impossible and works-based.
It's about as stupid as it sounds.

@@mrflynn510 Well no, we have the assistance of the Holy Ghost to help us to obey the gospel, its not just all on our own. We Enter into a partnership with all three members of the Godhead each week in sacrament for their help and assistance.

Just make sure I’m understanding correctly-
This narrative that Nelson has been biting at the bit to remove Mormon from our language when referring to each other since the 80s is incorrect. That has been consistently taught by apostles for a long time and there is no contradiction.
In 2018, Nelson did ask us to refrain from referring to ourselves as Mormon (new) but Nelson’s harsh words were directed at referencing the name of the church (christs offense and satans victory) and not about calling ourselves Mormon.
    Is that correct?
May need to go and read those talks again.

@missionarydiscussions1286 thanks so much for this video Travis! I have to admit I kinda chuckled to myself watching it, because for the last few days I’ve been contemplating whether I should comment in one of the recent videos you’ve uploaded the last few days. I’m not totally sure why, but this topic hits close to home. It definitely bothers me when people not of our faith, when referring to the church, do so incorrectly…but it bothers me a lot more when members do it. I’m not judging you Travis or trying to call you out, but I will say, when referencing the church in almost every one of your videos, you use the incorrect nickname “LDS Church.” I had a feeling you were aware of the “style guide-the name of the church” that was released by the church, which you posted within this video. In the style guide it states, …”please avoid using the abbreviation “LDS” or the nickname “Mormon” as substitutes for the name of the Church, as in “Mormon Church,” “LDS Church,” or “Church of the Latter-day Saints.”
So, even though I’m not mad at you for doing so, I have wondered and wanted to ask you, why do you repeatedly use the nickname “LDS Church”, when we’ve been taught by President Nelson and many other Apostles (as you beautifully pointed out in your video) and in the style guide; when a shortened reference is needed, the terms “the Church” or the “Church of Jesus Christ” are encouraged. The “restored Church of Jesus Christ” is also accurate and encouraged.
Anyway, I’m not trying to be critical, or make it seem like your a hypocrite, or any of that…I just genuinely want to know if you’ve been aware that you’re doing it? If not, I hope moving forward, you will try harder, or explain why you will continue to use “LDS Church” when shortening is more convenient versus using any of the encouraged abbreviations mentioned above. My personal preference is “the restored church of Jesus Christ.” 😊
Anyway, I love ya man! I hope you receive this in the spirit I am attempting to offer it. I have learned so much from you, and deeply admire you. I have shared so many of your videos with friends. I honestly look forward to you posting another video more so than most other things in my life! May God bless you brother for all the good you do! Take Care!

@@missionarydiscussions1286 Perfect answer! And so appreciated. Old habits do die hard…and yes, you are very good at correcting others, and I’ve seen you do it repeatedly when they use the term “Mormon,” whether they are referring to members or the institution. I think is why I felt such a disconnect when you’d say “LDS Church.” Thanks for your quick response. Made my day! Looking forward to your next video. 😎

What is MORE of an insult to Jesus than a nickname for the church is the way that people wrap their self-righteous skirts about them like Pharisees, having to keep the letter of the law rather than the spirit of the law. They say they don't allow abuse, but if someone pays enough in tithes, they get away with abuse because leaders will claim "I don't have the power to do anything."
When people call the church the Mormon church, getting all high and mighty about it shuts doors for communication that can otherwise nicely take place between the church and other denominations. Satan uses this greatly in order to keep the divisive lines in place even more.
