I really want to get into a fine dining restaurant, so I’ve been looking into different culinary schools. But I’ve seen so many videos saying that it is not worth the money and you won't get enough information out of it in order to make it worth it, or that it's just a waste of time, and you can learn the same stuff from working in restaurants. There are so many contradicting opinions and I have no idea what to do. Money is the main problem for me. I am currently looking at CIA CA. One of my other main problems with pursuing a culinary career is the social life aspect, as I am the type of person who someday wants a family, life-changing choices like whether or not to go to culinary school are hard... lol. I think my end goal right now is to become a chef and possibly open my own restaurant, but that may change as I get older, maybe even to becoming a private chef, food critic, or test kitchen chef.

You can probably learn everything that culinary school teaches you just by working but it’s going to take you many many years instead of 1-2 years! I 100% think it’s worth it but it’s also not necessary at all to be successful. Go with your intuition! I want kids and a family one day too but I’m focusing on the present since that is my current reality ❤️ best of luck to you!

Hi, I'm a student in culinary field too. In Indonesia, there are two options for culinary schools, namely vocational high school (equivalent to senior high school) and there is also a culinary academy school. And here, academic schools will cost more, because in vocational high schools we are more trained to learn about national food. And in the academy, we will learn global culinary cooking

I would recommend going to a community college and getting an associate's degree. If you're lucky you can get it paid off by scholarships or FASFA because it's not that expensive to go and you can live it home because there might be one near you so you can save lots of money. Then you can go to an expensive University to get your bachelor's if it's what you want to do with your career and you plan on working at a Marriott or a very expensive restaurant as a manager. I've decided to hold off on the bachelor's until I figure out what half I want to go on as a cook.

i’m definitely not at culinary school level yet. i’m just starting high school and my school offers a culinary program but my career path so far has nothing to do with the culinary arts but i enjoy cooking and baking so much i even consider it my career path sometimes. i’m really interested in joining the program since i’ve always loved cooking and being in the kitchen but i don’t know if it’s enough to take the program instead of using that period as a class for my actual career plan. don’t really know why i’m putting this out there, just hoping someone out there has/is been through the same dilema i have 😕👍🏻

I’ve taken culinary classes every year of high school beforehand so it felt like the right choice. i’ve worked in food service the past two years, if it makes you happy i say endure it

I wish culinary school was worth it for me. I loved school and really excelled. I won a scholarship, awards, and a gold medal in an ACF competition. After graduating, way before COVID, every bakery in town closed because of too high rent and not enough business. Restaurants hardly ever hire because they get their desserts shipped in frozen. The pay rate where I live is $7.50-10/hr even with a degree and experience. No adult can live off of that. I did an externship with Disney, but I couldn't stay because I'm married and didn't want a long distance marriage. I don't work right now because there are no jobs. I wish I could move, but I can't. I think culinary school is good for people who can relocate if needed, and doesn't have anything tying them down.

I agree. I too, went to the CIA (Hyde Park), and I’ve been the PC at a local hospital, for the last 7 years. I love my job, but unless your school is paid for (by grants, scholarships, parents or others), you’ll graduate with a large amount of debt, while going into a relatively, very low paying career field. Also, it’s hard work, high pressure, long hours and it’s a physically demanding career.

I would say look to Triade Schools for Culinary Education. They are a lot cheaper than a traditional Culinary School. And the majority of them are ACF Certified with a AA or Cert program. For My School we use the same books and material as the CIA and the majority of the chef professors learned at the CIA.

I currently work for Disney in the pastry department and there was a couple other people looking and applying to my job that I got because I had a bachelors and prior experience but what really sold them was that degree and it got me the higher ranked hourly rate. It’s different for everyone and what you wanna do and the type of school. Johnson & Wales has multiple bachelors you can get I only focused on pastry and got a food service management bachelors so when I want to get higher up in the business aspect I have that background knowledge and the skill set of pastry!

Anyway, As a former nurse,I think it is like in many aspects because of the attention to detail, discipline, commitment, team oriented, structural learning meaning it builds like blocks ( one thing leads to another) so learning the basics is KEY to moving forward. Most people think that it is fun,but in reality it is very hard work. This is the same in Nursing or in any field. Pursue it with Passion and Perseverance. The Tortious and the Hare story is applicable here.
