I was a fan of the Open racer when you introduced it to us a while back - I have to say that this does look like a very smart and logical evolution of that frame. Would like to check one of these out and will most likely do it on my next build. Cheers
Thanks a lot. Yes OpenRacer is special for sure. I think it helped me progress the most when I could focus on pushing and not worry as much about fixing something every other crash.
@@JonE5FPV so, your saying that my 2fiddy wouldn't survive! I do love that quad though and one day I might be able to fly it! I am not even a shyte pilot cause I'm not even a pilot yet. I can only fly LOS, when i put the goggles on i just can't get it, i make weird stick movements, usually i am on the throttle too much. When I fly in the sims i still suck, for the past several years I have been working 6 to7 days a week every week, zero vacations taken... why? I am a chump, doing it to ensure that I won't lose my job... and i just did! So now i kind of have the time but also not really as i should be putting all of my time available into finding a new job. I was self employed for a while, that was one of the jobs that drove me to work that hard, just never got a break, always had to do something, oh well my next job will be the greatest one ever, right? Right? shoot man, to be honest i am worried the world is weird right now that is for sure! Thank goodness for hobbies like this one, something that can really draw your attention away from everything bad because a lot of things we do in this hobby require some attention and thought, sometimes a lot. Also it is really cool how you have a good sized group of racers that turn up at your location and some of your racers are true top competitors! I would love to visit that night spot, there is something about it that really is speaking to me. I used to race motocross so i absolutely love being out at the track on race day or practice day, don't care as long as i am on my bike. But my bike didn't like me and tried to kill me... so after 2 weeks in the hospital and 2 more weeks before I could pull out my IV because of the infection i finally got to get back out. And 3 surgeries and a year and a half later i was finally "fixed"... but i can't ride anymore, I don't know if i could work out enough to get me to where I would need to be and i don't have the time or motivation for that anyway and not being able to ride has left a massive hole in my existence. As absolutely awesome the experience of riding is, racing, bumping and pushing, taking jumps that just a week ago scared me to death, as great as all that is probably one of the best things was the ride to and from the track, just chillin with some great friends, telling bullshyte stories, getting some food... and just being in the pits was a great thing to experience. FPV Quads give me a lot of what motocross did, not quire filling that hole in my soul but i am super happy that it is there. I just introduced my best friend to FPV racing we went to a race in Elgin Illinois put on by the great folks from Quadmafia - all of those guys came across as very nice, humble, fun people to be around. My friend was definitely impressed with what he saw (he also used to race with me, he still rides but with me out he doesn't go much at all). I am a fan of your channel since (i think) around 2020, early 21 for sure at the latest. Your content is typically very good, interesting, informative, (add many more positive adjectives) you really come across great. Also i really like how you have improved your ability to speak, to tell stories, etc... you have a good voice for sure. Oh, and sorry for the wall of text - I thought about erasing it but i guess I had a lot to say today... Cheers!
If you look up the definition of Sh*t pilot in the dictionary you will see my picture. I built two of these quads, loaded up the presets for HDZero, ELRS, and the OZR tune and was absolutely blown away by how well this quad handles. No quad is able to compensate for my dismal lack of race skills, but this quad upped my racing enjoyment factor by making it easier to do more laps, faster. I'm ready to pull the trigger on another frame to have three race rigs ready to go.
Excellent review video. I just built my first open racer last night. I have one old five33 classic switch back as well. It's great to see innovation in frame design for racing. Love the flight videos
OpenRacer is/was such a game changer for me. Finally allowed me to fly as fast and as hard as i want without constant worry for broken components/hours on bench fixing. I think it is for sure one of the top 3 things that helped me to progress. Building another today actually to test a new stack.
@JonE5FPV ya I'm excited to fly the open racer. I was bummed that five33 stopped supporting the Swichback classic it's a tough frame I've crashed it into tree trunks with no damage. I like the fact that the open racer will hopefully be available for a long time. I hate being forced to upgrade. Been following your channel a long time I remember when you proposed to your wife with your drone your pioleting skills have come a long way and I remember you saying guys stop siming so much. LOL. and now I'm always like at least 10 seconds slower than you, so please stop getting faster. Ha ha.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts - Nice frame. Still missing a light weight frame with DJI O3 naked. Recommendations are welcome. My Idea is to convert the Recursion Helios 3.5 to a TBS Podracer for a light and quite setup with O3.
nice! like flying at end as well. this may be my first race build, do you know what the print is for the antenna at 2:43 please or something simular? thanks
They have a full list of prints here, the one in that picture is the size L antenna mount i printed on my bambu makerworld.com/en/models/435720#profileId-344115
Carbon fiber braces are pretty light, but when hit all that force goes right to your electronics (I assume). I wonder if the braces were made of nylon or polycarbonate, would it make the race quad both strong and force absorbing to protect the electronics (at the expense of a little more weight)?
the main purpose of the brace in this build is to add arm stiffness, so they dont flex under load (heavy corenring etc.) and dont introduce any new noise to the gyro. If you 3d print a brace, you'd need to make it thicker and wider to get that stiffness, and it will be not 2-3g per brace but 8-10g which kills the purpose of a lightweight build. My whole point is - main goal of the brace is not protection. But ofc you can sandwich two together haha
The printed stuff is very strong when thick as Din mentioned but then would be heavy. The pod itself add a lot of protection. The brace adds some buy not as much as say an OpenRacer brace that is 5mm (ozr braces are 2 or 3mm I believe). But I ended up not running braces on OpenRacer anymore since so heavy. So lightweight brace you actually run ends up better than heavy brace you leave off.
You mentioned that you apply the karate tune on your other drones. I think you mentioned on discord ones that you also apply a filter tune for noisy drames/builds on top. Do you still do that? Also bash my quads a lot and don't want to change props every time. 😅 Karate is nice but can get a bit hot, even without the spicy setting.
I do always choose the noisy airframe option due to my penchant for running nasty props. But I think they removed that option around 4.2 and now my motors hotter than the sun. But this tune. They landed Luke warm to cool
@@JonE5FPV Thanks for your response. Just checked BF configurator and these presets are also available under 4.5. (Noisy and Very Noise Build, with and without RPM Filtering). So you would apply the Karate Tune (without spicy) and then add noisy with RPM filtering in a second step? If correct, I would give that a try and see how it feels. 🙂
I'm still out here running way jankier stuff than Jon - but yeah, what a rad frame. I'd still want to build one of these slightly chonkier with longer arms for the back, but this is definitely something I want to try out.
@@din_fpv I'm just over here wondering if 6" arms would do enough - just being able to run hybrid-X with long rears can do a lot for getting that 'stretch-X feel', and also open things up for using these as dual-sport chase rigs with a comically light setup
Do NOT use aluminium screws for motors. A set of titanium will set you back half the price of a motor, and I promise you you're going to lose a motor unnecessarily if you go with aluminium

True. Maybe they make some hybrid arms for that clean air feeling. Although with the tune, it feels just as smooth to me.

Yes. If you go to Din drones store and click on pod to buy, there is link to all three STL (including the pod )
no stl file for pod ?
pod STL is available here if you are setup to print CF Nylon
