I think they wanted to make Sara sympathetic but I hated her with a burning passion. She completely disregarded Brian’s opinions on what should be done. She hardly talked to her son Jesse who had dyslexia pretty much forgetting he existed. She kept Kate in the hospital constantly despite the fact she wanted to leave just for a bit. And she didn’t treat Anna like her daughter and more like a bin of spare parts for Kate. I get Kate is sick. BUT YOU HAVE TWO OTHER KIDS WHO NEED LOVE AND ANNA IS NOT JUST SPARE PARTS FOR YOUR OTHER KID!
I know. Remember the flashback scene when they're showing him brochures to the new special school/camp he's going to have to attend? My heart broke for that kid.
When u have a sick child it’s hard to remember on focus on anyone or anything but that child.. I agree she came across as a bad person but she loves them all but just focused on Katie cus she wanted her to pull through
The main thing that I get from this video is the Sara wants Katie to survive through her battle, but everyone else wants Katie to LIVE. They all k ow that she’s dying, but the lack of that perspective on the moms part is what’s making this journey so much harder, Sara hardly talks to her son throughout the movie, she always disowns the dads opinions, and she only sees Anna as a way to save Katie. She makes everything so much harder on her family because she is so wrapped up in her emotions that she doesn’t see how she is damaging everyone else around her.
Because she doesn't want to face reality because the very second you have to face reality everything around becomes real nad u have to accept the rules of life and rule #1 is no whatever everyone eventually dies and rule #2 is u can't do a thing about rule #1
I absolutely love that the father put his foot down here for the sake of his daughter. Nothing meant more to him than taking her out while he still could.
I know. I'm sure Sara in the novel would never have behaved liked this. I say this because while she wants to keep Kate alive, Sara would rather let her spend the last days letting her live her life. This one completely overreacted, in denial of respecting Kate's wishes and turned her family against her.

She is only thinking of herself. People want to make excuses but the reality is Kate told her everyday how miserable she was. Sara's anger and desperation stem from her thoughts on what she would lose, not anything else. She put both her daughters through hell for her own feelings. I know it's tough to lose a child but she caused more harm than good because she wouldn't recognize her own trauma.

I love this scene. It's so ridiculously realistic. The best I've seen from Cameron Diaz, and from the rest of the cast. Superb. I think EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE, can relate to this scene easily. Out of the entire film, this is the only scene that stayed with me. It just resonates within one too easily.
This is the scene of a mother breaking down and not accepting reality for what it is. Her daughter's dying and the truth is she's probably not going to survive, so the rest of her family is helping her live what life she has left and her mother's forgetting that surviving is not living. It's a wonderfully well done scene, and it's very realistic. But in the end that mother is going to lose her entire family, because she can't accept that sometimes you can't fix what's wrong.
Honestly I kind of feel bad for her I guess she's dying but it was selfish referred to try and force her daughter to give up a kidney I think that's all about immoral dilemma and not accepting the reality that there's some things you can't change I take Kate for example she's dying and her mother is still convinced that there's someone she can do but I feel like deep down the mom knows that deep deep down somewhere in there she knows she's going to die no matter what she does and it's probably tearing her up for me inside but you just can't accept that and I feel like over the course of the movie she's slowly not immediately but it's a very slow process but slowly over time she slowly begins to accept that she's going to die
This scene really gets to me. Reminds me of a terrifying fight my parents had when I was around Anna's age, it also reminded me how my mom acted after my surgery when I was eight.
1-the mom is so far delusional she thinks he’s dragging Kate on something she doesn’t want to do she doesn’t realize she’s freaking Kate out not a trip to a sunny beach. 2-Givng props to the dad. His attitude and demeanor through the whole video just says he’s done letting his wife mull over the whole family. He keeps (arguably) calm through the clip while his wife thinks losing her shit will get her way. He’s not gonna let his kid rot in a hospital thinking she’ll live longer he’s spending time with her and letting her be a kid.
I agree about the dad. He was calm and even when she lunged at him he didn't hit her in self defence he just fended her off and was calm about it all. He said what he wanted to say and didn't raise his voice. And once it was said he just kept moving. He didn't stay and let himself be a target or get drawn into an argument. Even when she tried to take the keys, he pushed her away firmly but not with aggression. Fathers in that situation are so frequently depicted as losing their tempers and get a bit aggressive. But he just remained in control and he didn't come across as a pushover or some sort of bully to his wife. He was firm and direct but not aggressive. That's a good father. Actor did a good job.
Sorry. But after several occasions throughout the movie, Sara's love for Kate could no longer justify her actions. She dismisses her husband, ignores her son, treats Anna like replacement parts for kate, and she doesn't even listen to KATE anymore. She's fucking insane and selfish. It was satisfying to see her not get her way this time.
I think what she was doing wasn't love... it was selfishness. She didn't want Kate to live for Kate's sake, she wanted Kate to live for her own sake and it didn't matter to her how miserable she was living a life of constant pain and illness.
What's worse is how she was treating Jesse as a lost cause. Poor kid had Dyslexia and Sara never once paid attention to him. Even Anna suffered because she was only seen as spare body parts meant to be used for her own purpose to save Kate. I get Sara was scared of losing her and wanted to be like those parents whose children survived cancer against all odds. However, what she failed to understand, was that it wasn't her choice to make. It was Kate's decision to stop treatment and leave this world in peace. She told Sara countless of times that she was ready to die, but the latter refused to let her go. Eventually, Kate got fed up with her selfishness and how she was treating their family. She took a stand against Sara by convincing Anna to sue for medical emancipation, fight for her own rights to live and make her own choices. She not only sued for rights to her own body, but also Kate's wishes for death. It took the family going to court and telling Sara off what they really thought of her, for her to see how selfish she truly was. Once she heard them out, she felt guilt and remorse for what she's done. Sara realized that Anna was only fighting for her rights to live, Kate wanted to die in peace and Jesse hating her for all the neglect she put him through.
This scene gets me every time. I live near a woman who has 5 kids and one of them was fighting a horrible disease. She never talked about any of her kids other than the sick one. Her entire life was devoted to keeping her child alive. It was so bad that her oldest child left home the day he graduated from high school because he was sick of being ignored and how everything revolved around his sibling. The child passed a couple of years ago and to this day, the only thing she ever talks about is her sick child. I dont even know the names of her three younger kids because she has never talked to about them at all.

Cameron Diaz delivered the best performance of her career in this film. I’m not saying the mother was right in everything, because sometimes she wasn’t, but she killed every scene she was in.
If I was Brian I would have divorced her already. That lady is clearly not okay in the head. I know her daughter is dying and that makes people do crazy things but that doesn’t mean it’s okay for her to neglect and abuse her other children. I wonder if Brian ever found out about Sarah slapping Anna at the hospital?
There was a deleted scene where he witnessed this, got angry at Sara and told her off to leave. This lead to an argument between her and Brian in regards to Anna. However, he stands his grounds and pointing out Sara is too controlling. Anna needs their support, not a mom who thinks of her only as spare body parts to Kate.

Thanks for the suggestion, and that definitely applies! This was posted for a Social Work project in one of my classes specifically relating to communication processes in a family.
Brianna - Renee Jordan you obviously don’t know what its like to have a sick child then. she was scared that she was going to lose her daughter because kate’s immune system was low because of the cancer and the treatment and the beach is full of germs. She clearly states several times “you’ll kill her if you take her” and “we’ve spent 14 years saving her and today you’ll undermine all that” . She was scared, not obsessed. Not the film for you clearly if you can’t understand it
Jaclyn Schilt I think he’s just so emotionally overwhelmed. He just wants some kind of happiness for them, something liberating. Everyone here was acting out fear, frustration and love
He also needed her to support the decision to make the quality of their daughter life better at that moment. And if she didn’t go then there would be nothing left for them in their marriage.

Brian: Get your stuff. March in, march out. One minute.
Sara: Hey. What's going on?
Brian: We're going to the beach.
Sara: You're going to the beach?
Brian: Get your bikini.
Sara: Kate? Kate, what are you doing...?
KATE: Mama, please. Don't... Sara: Wait a second, what is she doing out of the hospital? Brian! Brian! It'll kill her! Give me the keys, I'm taking her back to the hospital. Give me the keys, Brian! Let... Give me! Are you insane? You trying to kill her?
Brian: I talked to chance.
Sara: I don't give a shit who you talked to! You are killing her! You understand? Take her to the beach, you kill her! Come on.
Kate: No, please.
Sara: Come on, sweetie. It's okay.
Kate: No, please, please!
Brian: Don't do this.
Sara: See how upset she is? See what you're doing? I'll call cops.
Brian: Do what you gotta do. Last 14 years I've let you have it your way.
Sara: Last 14 years have been about saving her!
Brian: Today is not about you.
Sara: You want to undermine that?
Brian: It's about Kate.
Sara: It is.
Brian: She wants to go to the beach. Lf you'd like...
Sara: She's gonna die!
Brian: Better come, if you don't, I want a divorce.
Sara: A divorce? Great!
Brian: Good.
Sara: You got a fucking divorce!
Brian: We're divorced, Mommy and me are divorced. Sit in the car. In the car.
Sara: No. Anna!
Brian: In the car!
Sara: Brian. Give me the keys! This is ridiculous!
Brian: STOP.
Sarah: You're gonna regret this, Brian. You understand? You're gonna regret this! Brian! Katie, sweetie, you gotta go back to the hospital!
So sad when a mother is fucking crazy. Just accept your child wants to live before dying is that fucking hard to let someone go for God sakes.
Title should be communication in marriage.
Thanks for the suggestion, and that definitely applies! This was posted for a Social Work project in one of my classes specifically relating to communication processes in a family.
Cameron Diaz is desperate to be be an actress that I am glad to see the look on her face as I couldn’t get out of? 🤣
Yes, Brian (Jason Patric) tells Sara (Cameron Diaz) wants to divorce family.
I know this is a drama but the dad is fucking hot especially while at the beach.
Talk about obsessed with your child
Brianna - Renee Jordan you obviously don’t know what its like to have a sick child then. she was scared that she was going to lose her daughter because kate’s immune system was low because of the cancer and the treatment and the beach is full of germs. She clearly states several times “you’ll kill her if you take her” and “we’ve spent 14 years saving her and today you’ll undermine all that” . She was scared, not obsessed. Not the film for you clearly if you can’t understand it
Why would he threaten divorce?
Jaclyn Schilt I think he’s just so emotionally overwhelmed. He just wants some kind of happiness for them, something liberating. Everyone here was acting out fear, frustration and love
Basically, he's 110% done with her attitude. By this point, she's stopped caring about anything except what she wants.
He was basically fed up with Sara's behavior in how she treated their family. Brian couldn't take any more of it.
He also needed her to support the decision to make the quality of their daughter life better at that moment. And if she didn’t go then there would be nothing left for them in their marriage.
Everybody hates and talks shit about sarah (my self included)
But what kind of parent are you if you dont turn into crazy mode to save your kids life?
Kate was past saving at this point. Her dad was trying to give her a happy Memory before she went
Took him 14 years but finally...he found his balls 🥲
Sara is a mean lady
We're Divorce Now Mommy and I are Divorced
I'm on his side 100%
This not about you lady. Kate wants to have fun not staying in the hospital all day. Letter be a kid for once.
