      YES, this, so many times.
A lot of people were way too sympathetic to him when he came out with his grievances against Tyra but let's be real, he spent years mistreating these girls and laughing madly more often than not.
The most egregious example is when he did absolutely nothing to protect a model who was being molested, before his very eyes! Instead, he laughed at her, told her to just shut up and work and very recently was caught laughing at her all over again.
And Tyra was not set either, that was Jay.

I’m so thankful for the photographers in my life who let me in front of the camera and taught me a lot… it made me feel a little better about myself… but never good enough for me to even consider myself decently attractive. So not to DEFEND this, but I think the idea of this photo shoot and teams was to play on hair competition shows. The big one that comes to mind is the Bronner Brothers’ one that used to take place in Atlanta each year. Black hairstylists would use hair to create hair sculptures that are total works of art. I think one part of it is like a “team duel” where you put up your best hairstylists to compete against each other. So that’s what’s going on here. NOW, is it appropriate or a good idea for a photo shoot on a competition modeling show? No. No it is not.

This actually could be a really fun environment. It reminds me of a drag show or a ball. Some environments, people are just obnoxious for fun, and it definitely felt like these two designers enjoyed heckling each other. It's definitely not for everybody, but it could work for the type of person who enjoys that vibe.

I feel like 100% they pick and choose bad photos for whichever girl is being sent home, just how often even in the brief videos we see on the show where the girls are trying a variety of different poses, and end up with the oddest ones chosen at the end. This one, and especially the mountain climbing episode, watching the girls in such a brief moment try multiple interesting poses, and they use the most simplistic poses most times in the final photos, is just anticlimactic as a show, and disappointing. They're there trying so hard to get it right within just a few shots, being not how a photoshoot would ever work with so much reason, and yet end up with the least complimenting photos. Like photo 2 in this vid at 20:28 she was doing so many cute sassy poses showing off the material with plenty movement, multiple fun expressions, when they kept encouraging the girls to move, show more expression, and we end up with a profile shot of her jumping to the side, as if that's not the most basic way to show movement, and as if they weren't just getting mad at girls just now for not being original, top it off with not having any of the expression that he says he loves to see so much, but no one chooses at the end. She's beautiful, doing a great job, her final photo was great, but goes against the critiques they judge these girls for all the time, to so many photos throughout the show. Imagine putting so much into your work because they keep saying they "want something different" and "Want more expression" for them to judge you based off the shot of your serious expression with a jump to the side. Why would that be a show of ALL her efforts in this photoshoot? Why give her so much critique to do things you never put to use anyway?
Hope you enjoyed my ted talk.

I really think this show was specifically created to destroy young women. The judges are horrendous. Mr J is outright abusive to the talent. Tyra is a terrible human being. She is cruel and sadistic. She enjoys destroying people and killing their self esteem. The "challenges" are entirely arbitrary and serve no purpose beyond creating drama.
I really appreciate you calling out this show and exposing it for what it is.

They usually don't like the contestants distracting each other on set i.e. when Nigel called out Jenah during the photoshoot in China. But in hair competition culture at the time, specifically black culture, heckling and roasting each other is considered a part of friendly competition. Creatives being able to take comments like "pubic hair" or "shag rug" is a sign of good sportsmanship in that community. You're supposed to be able to laugh it off and be confident in your art. Oliver Twixt actually points this out during his interview with Alexandria. Thats why the show established that they were on teams and had Anslee narrate that the girls had to distract the other team. If production was really evil, they could've just omitted that and took their comments really out of context, like making certain girls look like they were making rude comments because they had a personal issue with someone.

There are a few things that tik me off. First of all, real hair can be used for wigs, so in my opinion it's a waste to use it for a one-time outfit. Second of all, that challenge was bullying and in it shouldn't happen in any professional environment. Seriously watching it is painful 😶

I think it would be great if the production team got to pick a picture, the model gets to pick a picture, and the photographer gets to pick a picture, and the creative director gets to pick a picture. And they don't tell the judges which person picked which shot. Maybe they will pick the same picture, maybe they pick all different photos. I think it will be more fair and it will help the models learn what makes a good picture for their portfolio.
