Shoutout to my friend Azizi, go say hello here!! instagram.com/azizi__donnelly NOTE: This was shot in late 2020, but I wasn't sure if I was going to post this video...so I am a BIT late uploading it! Here it is though!
you should do a professional portfolio verse an ANTM portfolio because i heard agency and casting look at them and roll their eye, and laugh at them and don't know what to make of them because they are so crazy
As a first responder who’s seen way too many actual crime scenes, this is uncomfortably close to reality. The pictures look like a glorification and sexualization of real life violence toward women.
I did a lot of horror modeling but that was a choice I made, no one forced it on me. I can see how it could be abrasive for someone especially out of context. There are things a shoot like this could be used for though. The cover of a novel, a Halloween campaign, horror magazine, band art, or haunted house advertising. Just as some examples.
I agree, there is a place for horror style art. I dabbled with it in college, but again, it was a choice! I wouldn't be comfortable shooting or modelling it now, though.
That's so cool! I love following people who do crazy special effects with makeup and prosthetics. People are so talented with making things look creepy, or gory, or just straight up illusional. I had no idea horror modeling had it's own category too 😃
I agree, I can definitely imagine scenarios where this kind of makeup makes sense and a model would do it. I immediately thought of a special effects makeup artist hiring a model so they can add to THEIR portfolio. I don't agree that these photos are about fashion, it's just a gimmick like a lot of the other ANTM shoots.
@@katlynnalmansor4135 exactly. The show is purposely extra. Part fear factor, part obstacle course, run by a seemingly sadistic panel of people who enjoy making the girls feel terrible about themselves.
Making Jael do a scene like this a week after her friend died seems so pre-calculated to me it reminds me of when they did that to Kahlen on cycle 4 when she had to literally be put in a coffin right after finding out her friend died
I’m into the dark spooky stuff, horror movies etc so I really like a couple of the final shots! But I think it was insensitive with Jael, and I agree it’s probably not something anyone would want to see in a portfolio .. the show never did them any favors. Loved your guy’s commentary!
Heroin chic was sooo big in the 90s, I remember glossy magazines having "overdose" fashion shoots. Its probably the context of this shoot and with time it has aged very badly, like most horrendous things on this show.
MAKING someone do a shoot after she lost her friend is cruel, just utterly horrible and digusting. This show has no respect for any model that signs up for this and I doubt anybody had a pleasent time on the show
This is the second time they’ve made a model do a shoot centered around death after one of their friends had recently passed. They did this to Kahlen on cycle 4. They had to be lowered down into a grave in coffins and do a seven deadly sins photo shoot.
Makes me think Tyra and the producers are kinda sadistic for doing that.. Like this isn’t the first time they made someone do a death shoot after losing someone..
About Jael: In 2012, Strauss was reported to be battling methamphetamine addiction. She appeared on the Dr. Phil show on September 13, 2012, to discuss her struggle with addiction. She notably ran out into the parking lot during filming of the episode. Jael stated that she felt exploited while she was on the show. Strauss announced on her Facebook that she had incurable stage IV metastatic inflammatory breast cancer on October 4, 2018. She died on December 4, 2018, at the age of 34.
RIP Jael 💔 I was devastated when I found out about her struggles after the show, she was a beautiful soul. I am glad she's no longer suffering and in pain, and I am still sad that she's gone.
Yeah, they knew DAMN well about Jael's friend. They showed her getting the phone call and talking with some girls about it. I really don't believe that the shoot was just an unfortunate coincidence. It was such a bizarre concept. Side note: I forgot how much I love Natasha😂💛
it's not like cycle 4, where they "realized" during photoshot here, they did this whole thing a week AFTER they knew about the friend. I can't excuse it
Jael was my favorite ANTM contestant of all cycles. From childhood to the rewatch, she was a great example of the quirky girl who cared deeply but didn’t take life to seriously. Really inspirational for girls like me who watched the show growing up. Her shine doesn’t dull even through their ridiculous tests. I was fortunate enough for her to accept my friend request on FB and so I was able to witness her health journey/struggles. I did not know her personally but I’m thankful for the show presenting someone so pure and beautiful inside and out. RIP Jael Strauss 🖤
Another unfortunate thing about this photoshoot was Dionne had to pose as the shooting victim, and in a later episode she mentioned that her mom had been shot in the past.
"Don't get overwhelmed over your friend ODing" WTF? Don't put this girl in a terribly triggering situation and make her feel safe instead. She even basically dissociated during the shoot. That's really serious. Jay definitely knew about it when he asked her, coz the producers know everything that's going on. These people are criminals. RIP Jael, so heartbreaking
As someone who is in school to be a CSI (almost finished) this is GROSS. IT IS NOT OK! The trauma people go through when a loved one is murdered is unmatched. This seems like a mockery and its just awful.
I recently just saw a dead body cut half from a motorcycle accident and I couldn't sleep for a week. The motorcycle was crashed and the road had a lot of blood in it. But I'm used to seeing dead bodies and witnessing murder and violence since I was a kid coz we used to live in a rough neighborhood full of gangs, crimes, dead bodies. This photoshoot of ANTM is kinda cool but insensitive. I feel like it's just too much!
RIP Jael Strauss (1984-2018). You will be missed. 💖💜💛👑🌟⭐ Also, Felicia's elimination was so UNFAIR. Tyra basically eliminated her because she didn't want another Tyra lookalike.
Jessica please do episode 5 from cycle 11, it’s a shoot where the models pose in water with their eyes above the surface. Great photos and would love to hear your thoughts!
@@martymacfly2236 She does the shoots that she gets the most requests for. I have seen some great ones in which she is very complimentary of the shoots, but criticizes the unkind treatment of models.
Besides all the controversy, I think some of the pictures turned out soooo great!! There are many photographers and artist who do this kind of artsy crazy stuff. I love it!!
Had they used something like "this is what abuse can look like" i would have liked it better. We have a yearly event in my city where women gets their makeup done to simulate abuse and then they stand in the city square in silence. This to bring attention to domestic abuse. Had the photoshoot had the same theme, it would have been great, because the makeup was done really well on some of the girls, and if they had ditched the lingerie.
I don't even care about the concept of this photoshoot, all I can think about is how they mistreated Felicia and Jael. Everyone kept saying how much Felicia looked like Tyra (but younger and "fresher"), and they eliminated her in such an obvious way because of Tyra's jealousy. So frustrating to see unfair eliminations and manipulations.
Yayy! I dont care how old this is, I love when you bring Azizi in to give her opinion on the monstrosity that is America's Next Top Model. Between you being a professional photographer and Azizi being a model it really shows how this show is solely reality tv and does not represent what real working models experience. Keep up the videos hun!
Okay but clearly neither of them work in high fashion. Jessica mostly shoots lifestyle and I’m guessing by Azizi’s comments she’s mostly working for commercial brands. This isn’t that type of work..
@@jt17cheer Your point being...? The "high fashion" industry isnt going to stand for the type of crap that this show portrays as realistic. Whether a model works in commercial or high fashion they are still represented by agencies who would also not condone ANY client treating their models with disrespect or putting them in dangerous/negative environments. The key thing here is that real life working models in every aspect of fashion have the ability to consent to the type of work they do and how they are treated on jobs. Tyra and ANTM push these girls to believe that consent is a myth and that to work within the industry at a "top model" level they HAVE to do things they are uncomfortable with or risk their safety/health. EDIT: Another thing, this is a reality television show not a professional working shoot. Most of these concepts are literally worthless to the models for a variety of reasons but the biggest one being they can't even use a majority of their photos in their portfolio to help them gain actual work once they are off the show.
@@ebonymarieblack1530 Literally NO ONE ever said “Hey these shoots are going to help you book work after the show”. Do you think anyone would watch if they did headshots and basic studio shoots all the time? No. It’s supposed to be entertaining/dramatic. It’s common knowledge at this point that there is literally no “reality” in reality tv. My point however was that the two of them acted like there is no place for this type of work in the industry, and there is. Go look through some issues of Italian Vogue from this era. Obviously some new model off the street isn’t going to be shooting high concepts like this, but plenty of actual supermodels have.
@@jt17cheer When did I say anything regarding the concept behind the shoot in either comment? Obviously there is room within the fashion/entertainment industry for this type of work. My issue with ANTM is how they TREAT the girls so maybe you should clarify what someone's stance is before you act like they don't know what they are talking about. Numerous contestants from prior seasons have come forward talking about how toxic the environment on ANTM was or how the show has such a shitty reputation within the fashion industry that getting work after was nearly impossible.
I'm a fan of horror so this concept was pretty interesting imo. Some of the final shots looked amazing too but I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea. Forcing Jael through that was really insensitive though
The moment I saw the concept I was waiting for the reveal that one of the model’s loved ones recently died or was murdered. They did the exact same thing with a grave photoshoot in another season - using trauma for the drama.
Alternative modeling is a whole genre! Including horror- or “dark”-themed shoots like this one. I don’t find it offensive or upsetting at all, except for how things were handled with Jael. However, obviously there are people who will be upset or even triggered by this kind of concept and photos, so I can see how it may not have been the best choice for such a widely aired show.
I love horror and dark concepts, there are some makeup artists that specialize in it and it can look really cool and interesting. The only issue here is that there was no disclosure for it, and the models were never given the opportunity to say no to shooting something they're uncomfortable with, especially when someone in the cast lost someone so recently. I don't think people should feel bad for enjoying a dark concept like this one though.
Honestly, it's a very interesting concept for me and I liked the outcomes. Sexualizing violence, especially the ones that could be interpreted as domestic violence, can be problematic, but these photos could also easily be used for an abuse awareness campaign. The biggest issue I have with the shoot is the absolute cruelty of doing this after one of the model's friends died and how they treated her. Lack of consent was problematic, but pales in comparison to trying to make her feel that she's not allowed to be affected by her friend's death at work. Despicable and calculated.
This whole shoot reminds me of a murderer in Korea that claimed to be an 'artist' and poisoned a woman and then took photos of her dying.. Apparently he had many victims but the police covered it up since it was 'bad press' for Korea at the time. Just watching this episode has me thinking back to that and how the guy considered it 'art' to photograph women dying.. It just really makes me wonder about who came up with this concept and for what reason.
When this aired, I had just come out of hospital from a brutal domestic violence assault. I couldn't watch it. It took me a while to verbalize it, but it literally is making violence against women 'fashionable'. It's still hard to watch, but it's been a minute, so I'm okay, but still feel the same about what it appears to be doing.
I want to give you a big hug, this personality made me feel uncomfortable watching and I never been through situations like this and to know people who have witnessed this like you it hurts to know that they were so insensitive to people like you and I wished this episode was banned tbh…
They have a girl that just lost a friend, made her do this photoshot, then bringing up AGAIN her friend during photoshot, then telling her "You can't let it affect you" like, it's almost as this photoshot about death it's emotional to a person in grief
it's still unbelievable how they made Jael go through that when they knew that her friend passed away before this photoshoot , I still feel that they did that on purpose to get drama
Jael herself was also a drug addict at the time this was filmed so it must have been extra hard for her to deal with as well knowing she was every bit at risk of an OD as her friend. She managed to get clean but unfortunately passed away of Cancer when she was just 34.
I always get extra excited when Azizi is in the thumbnail! I remember a project a photographer did where she collaborated with the models to WILLINGLY recreate death scenes that the models thought up. Basically, the models got to act out how they would hope to die. It was pretty great.
I'm all for horror photoshoots and special effects, but this somehow feels so demeaning for murdervictims. Especially the sexualization of this photoshoot, when sexworkers are most vulnerable to these kind of crimes. I could understand if this was for bookcover or something with reason, but this has nothing to do with fashion. This is just exploitative, like this show always was.
I'm not offended by this concept and I would 100% do this photoshoot if I were a model, but I can also understand how incredibly unrealistic it is from a real world modeling perspective. As you guys mentioned, this wouldn't be showcased in your portfolio and the tactics and situations need to be consenting, because, like Jael, you never know someone's life experience. This concept feels a lot more like a photoshoot my friends and I would have done in high school or college trying to be an edgy artistic weird goth photographer.
Rest In Peace to sweet Jael 💕💕 my heart broke for her when she got the news about her friend In this episode. And then they made them do this photo shoot. Just awful
What’s the difference between this and a movie about a murder? I definitely look back thinking the concept is very very dark and really unnecessary. I think the only bad part about this is I wouldn’t be surprised if the show purposely did this shoot because the one models friend just died. I think we should be careful about art, I would never want to shut down an artist because the concept makes me uncomfortable. As far as the model speaking up about the bathtub. It’s ridiculous to not expect a model to speak up. It’s okay for a model to think of idea during a shoot that the photographer might not have thought about. You’ve said that in the past models should speak up about photo shoots.
I think she meant that she shouldn't HAVE to. She often comments how the show puts all the responsibility on the girls for every element of the shot when the photographer should be giving feedback.
I think this is just really distasteful and can be so triggering, it's not ok to romanticize crimes/violence for fashion purposes. What if you have a loved one that has been shot and you see this, with models and creative director just giggling around, treating this subjects with no respect, I mean.. This is so not ok imo
@@91loveismyreligion there’s so much more violent art and media than what was here. I’m not arguing that the shoot is in bad taste. I still I think it’s a slippery slope when you police art because it might trigger someone. The only person this shoot when meant to hurt is the one that lost her friend.
I worked in a haunted house for 15 years and horror photography is 100% a thing. It's very theatrical. I have some pictures family members don't want to see because they're quite graphic and very convincing with the right lighting/setting/magic of photoshop. Some edgy brands go for horror photography, but I feel like it's very niche. I think the same way a model would be informed and consent to a lingerie or boudoir shoot, ahead of time, a model should consent to a horror shoot ahead of time with an understanding in what they will be participating in. Side note, also because a lot of horror makeup is highly staining. Your skin could be red for a few days after which could affect other jobs.
It's one of their "edgier" shoots, but I didn't find it disturbing at all. I do enjoy horror movies, so maybe that's where it comes from, but it really didn't make me feel unsettled or uncomfortable. I wouldn't say there isn't a market for this. There is, for horror shots, movies, Halloween/horror themed advertisements etc. It might not be for everyone, but isn't that what art is?
@@darthtaiter idk a lot of their commentary seemed focused on the shoot itself and the styling of the models. They talked about the theme throughout the video. The Jael portion (while important) was only a small part of their commentary.
The concept itself is something I would do with models I've worked with and could work with. I actually personally really like the concept. However, what gives me the ick about it is the fact that it was done on ANTM: they genuinely mistreated their models awfully throughout the runtime of it, and completely took away the choice from the participants of the show with the threat of them not being able to "make it" without the help of the show. If this was a concept I saw through a RUclips video, I'm here for it! But heck ANTM for all of their wrongdoings with the models.
I'm glad a lot of these comments are actually into this concept, because I really like this too and did not see it as over-board or anything, and I think it is very common for horror-y film and art. I thought I all of a sudden was a bad person for being into this. These images are supposed to be shocking, and sure, the whole model kills other model was f---ing weird as all hell, but the final photos were, for the most part, really well done. This was shot in 2006, by the way. Glamourizing violence is something that deserves discourse, but I don't think this concept was inherently wrong or went too far. All of this is to say, what they did to Jael was so f'ed up, and not even the first time something like this happened. ANTM does NOT care about the safety and wellbeing of their models and they have proven that time and time again.
@@Hannah-ix3sw I think we basically agree? All I said was that I liked the concept. ANTM doesn’t inform models about any of their photoshoots and that’s a fatal flaw of production.
If you’re aestheticising Crime Scene Photos, it’s disturbing. Serious Crime is not a costume and this was clearly not in an era where people had discourse on triggers.
I mean… I love horror movies and thrillers so I can see pictures like this being used for those industries. I like them. I mean I’ve seen way more violent things in movies and shows. Lol. Also video games show even more disturbing things. I think it’s an edgy concept that’s actually pretty damn popular even nowadays. As long as they have a trigger warning and don’t force anyone into it, I think it’s ok.
I love to see Azizi!! The concept is really... odd. I know that Jael' situation was a very unfortunate coincidence since the show already has the shoots planned months in advanced, but on a greater scope it could trigger the audience too, so it was still irresponsible. The girls worked really hard and delivered solid performances.
It is hard to believe that two shoots involving death/graveyards coincidentally happened to take place so close to when a contestant found out a friend of theirs passed away. Because it also occurred in season 4 with Kahlen. But weirder coincidences have happened so I can’t be sure. I just know they do like to take advantage of the girls’ trauma and fears.
@@michelledawn7446 they ABSOLUTELY take advantage of the girls. They did so many fear factoresque shoots to get reactions. In cycle 2 they did heights twice. Alisha and Sophie from Brittish invasion were terrified of heights and they went to Macao Tower. But these really were coincidences (allegedly). Antm hired the photographers, stylists and locations before the cycles start. Of course, Kahlen's shoot with the 7 deadly sins may have been tweaked to have the graveyard involved... but you can never know...
As an actual crimevictim who was dead but the emt's got me back to life this is very.... Lacking in respect. I was photographed naked in the street, not fun. I have to pass on this video
Oh I love the concept, though it wasn't always executed well... or consistently. Some of the pictures look high fashion-ish and some of them resemble more of movie posters. I still like the idea of bringing something shocking and dirty into art and making it contrast with the fashion and a beautiful female body (I think that this is the reason for them posing mostly in lingerie - because the nice juvenile body makes a great contrast for something as horrible as murder, and so you want to uncover the body as much as possible). But it's certainly not a shoot for everyone.
Yeah, I think the problem was the execution. If they went for a more horror look, instead of trying to make it...beautiful...it would have worked better. Because murder is horror, not beauty, and I think that's what's making it uncomfortable
It think that’s the issue. It feels like it was- pointless? Directionless? Like they weren’t like “hey we are doing a mock crime scene tv show shoot” or “a mock editorial” so it feels too vague to be like “it’s murder themed”
Well, I don't think this ep aged badly. The theme is fine, art is not supposed to be all cute and rainbows all the time. It is supposed bother us too, to be disturbing somehow, and make us reflect about the subject (Goya, anyone?). Photos likes these can be used as music records covers, they could be in music videos, movies, and all kinds of things. The grotesque has a place in art and I quite enjoy it. (I'm not commenting about anything else but the photos)
I enjoyed the final product, just felt bad for Jael. The concept was good, it's the execution (pardon the pun) that I felt unnerved even the most openminded. There was a grotesque vibe of this is how the industry disposes models.
@@jt17cheer yes, I agree that sometimes the show went over the limit, but we need to understand that it was a show, models sign up a contract and they were always free to leave as we have seen in many espisodes where girls just left the show
I like the concept and love some of these photos. Horror/crime stuff is something I'm really into. However, I think the way they did it was wrong and insensitive especially since one of the models just lost someone. ANTM treats their models on the show very poorly and it's so hard to watch. Consent is still important during photoshoots but they never seem to care.
I think my biggest issue with this photoshoot is the combination of murder and lingerie. Whatever they want to say the story behind each photo is, without someone saying "oh, I was supposed to have had my neck stolen by another model, haha" it LOOKS like an SA crime scene photo. It feels like they're not only setting up the models to be uncomfortable or even triggered, but anyone involved with the photo shoot and anyone who sees the photos - especially outside of the given "context." And to be honest, even the context feels like a bold faced lie.
The fact that I watched this as a kid and saw nothing wrong with it at all. I was totally unfazed! Being an adult I can see that this is overtly sexualized and glamorized graphic deaths but I know some people enjoy the horror genre. So I can see the insensitivity and the “it’s just horror fashion!”
Jael passed from breast cancer in 2018. rip she was a beautiful kind soul. so sad. so much pain in life only to be taken by cancer. my heart is broken for the world's loss. I hope her family and loved ones are safe and healing.
The saddest thing about Jael is that, prior her cancer, she was having a horrible drug addiction problem so bad that she was dragged in Dr. Phil’s show. She managed to have her life back together and then, cancer hit. RIP Jael.
I'm kinda into this concept because one of my favorite movies is "Jennifer's Body" and it gives me the vibes of that movie with a little bit of Tim Burton, but I know it's not for everybody. A more light and funny photo shoot from this show was the Candy Wardrobe one, the girls are covered with actual candy and the shots are so interesting. I think you would like to react to this one 😊
I did a “horror” shoot with a friend for her makeup school final. BUT that was a choice and we talked through the entire look and concept before I even showed up to the shoot. This is sad, no matterHOW the final photos look
context of the historical time in entertainment is also important here. this was the shining era of CSI, where there was a massive boom of crime scene shows and this sort of modeling was in heavy demand. Many of the younger audience might find this shoot gauche but it was in vogue, and i think rather well executed! these look like legit photographs that would appear in those shows and films. even present-time commenters might pretend like it’s vulgar now, but there is STILL a hyperfixation on violent-crime vlogs, documentaries and podcasts (there are literal million-views-youtubers who do their makeup while gossiping about famous murder cases y’all). death has always been a subject of fascination to humans, and shying away from it, as opposed to examining its artistic (or non-artistic) values is not going to make that fascination disappear!:)
I usually agree with you but it’s really not a big deal. It’s just a photo shoot. It’s like saying why make movies about crimes or horror movies. Not everything is about empowering something, not everything is going to be sunshine and rainbows. It’s different, it’s interesting, the make up was crazy good. I enjoyed it.
If you notice, this is the second time they do this though. The first time was when they did the seven deadly sins shoot in the graves. And one of the girls had just had a friend who passed away as well. It’s kinda strange to put them through that on purpose
I kinda liked the concept, but it had nothing to do with selling clothes and, as usual, the photos were a let down in comparison to how well the girls did. Reminds me of the horror movie Ginger Snaps, where a couple of morbid sisters posed themselves in photos like this (I liked those too, I'm also morbid).
Yeah, i remember being really into this concept when the ep came out. But working in family and sexual violence space now and I feel really uncomfortable with it. I think if it was better contextualised like some comments suggest. Like if it was for a horror film or something, it would make sense. But as is with no context beyond murder shots, I'm quite disturbed.
I actually really love this concept. I'm super into horror aesthetics, though I know a lot of people can't stomach stuff like this. I found all of these shots to be gorgeous. Definitely the bit with Jael was insensitive, though.
I would personally LOVE to do this type of photoshoot, but I also have a morbid sense of humor. I love the idea of playing with death as a concept, and just the decay and rebirth of energy. I am a strange one, lol. Also, while I am an artist, I am not a model!
This is crossing the LINE. This is not fashion.. who sells their clothes on dead bodies? This is disturbing, degrading, and further perpetuates women hating women with their stupid story concepts. We're not about that.
I remember watching this episode when it was on tv, and I loved it! I remember the pictures being striking and super different. I never through about how it is basically glorifying violence against women - but I do see how it could be taken that way.
I belong in the “cool concept!” camp…I enjoy creative editorials that allude to a story…not just an ad campaign to sell merchandise. And since Jael’s friend had passed only a week prior, I don’t know if ANTM would’ve had enough time to get that many special FX make-up artists booked? They did such incredibly realistic work!! That being said, Jay’s calloused remarks to Jael were tone deaf (as usual).
Thank you for your commentary. This is healing for our age group. You can see easily what we were raised with as “okay”… I’m so glad things are changing every day. Please keep doing this. It’s important.
The concept was good actually and the photos turned out great. Ya'all just started watching the video ready to hate it. 🤣 I prefer you reacting alone though 🤣
What bothers me most about these photos is the implication behind some of them. Like they wanted the models to look like something else happened, but they were too scared of the backlash to go there, so they said they were supposed to look like this.
So torn on these. What surprises me though is that how the photos are done looks really stunning. The lighting, cropping and setup looks great. And they have that for a photoshoot where the models look dead while on other "glamor" shoots the way the models were photographed didn't work for me at all.
I'm of two minds with this shoot: so far as this competition's stated purpose - fashion models - the shoot would have been a) pointless, because none of it would be usable in a portfolio (like about 98% of the stuff they shoot), and b) incredibly tasteless because of the "forced consent" that is an element of all of these shoots, because none of these models have any clue exactly what types of shoots they are signing up for at the beginning, and if they say No to one of them, then they are out of the running, and they know it. On the flip side, if this shoot was done with either established models or with actors or some such who knew ahead of time what they were going in for and there hadn't been that weird "we all killed each other" storyline behind it, I can see this having been a stunning art shoot. A lot of it ~was stunning and artistic, but because the models had no autonomy or real protections in place specific to them - rather than those that would be loyal to the show/company first - it makes the shoot understandably uncomfortable to watch. I will put here a quick reminder that the show (like any "reality" show) is heavily edited, and the order of things are often rearranged, and conversations are often cut (for instance, Jay ~may have spoken to each model after their shoot, but the only one they needed for a good narrative was Jael's). (Edited for grammar/spelling)
I don't see much of an issue with this, but I love horror make up...for me this is much more interesting than anything. I definitely agree that today this would NOT fly even as satire it would be immediately canceled. I can understand the sexualizing and glamorizing comments but I don't feel like in general those are big problems... or as big as actually committing crimes
Pretty convenient that they had photoshoots centered around death BOTH times a model experienced a traumatic loss while on the show. I'm 90% positive that Jay knew about this and it was planned. Same thing happened in the other cycle when they had to be put in coffins in the ground and that girls friend had just died a few days prior. They did this on purpose. As for the shoot, personally I don't find it distasteful as long as people are having fun with it. Its clear Jael should not have been forced to confront her situation in this way. However, I remember watching this shoot back in the day and really liking how it turned out and I still feel the same.
Some of the photoshoots definitely cross the line, but this one was cool. I think Jael should have been allowed to sit out if she wanted to without risking elimination. I think this was a cool AF photoshoot as someone who loves all things macabre and is into SFX makeup.
This is actually a cool shoot imo, in particular the drowning/bathtub/organ ones. Something about the lighting and colors just brought a really cool aspect to it. I will say that the way they talked about the models during the actual shoot was kind of weird, like hyping up how dead and brutalized they looked. But at the end of the day, the only thing definitively wrong with this shoot was how they dismissed Jael’s trauma
I hope the episode had a trigger warning. I love horror and morbid stuff, so I liked this photo-shoot. However, I do realize that there are people for whom making it or watching it could be traumatizing (like in the case of that girl who's friend had just passed away). I think photoshoots like this are ok, if people have been warned about what they are going to experience and have consented to it.
I enjoy the gore concept however I think this would only work for makeup artist practice and adding to their portfolio vs it going to a models portfolio
Honestly, this brings back some of my trama because I've found family members before that had passed away when I went to visit, and the imagery is just something that shouldn't be glorified because it is surreal to see someone lifeless and gone. While watching I had to look away and just listen to the commentary because it brought back memories I had pushed back. Love your channel Jessica but America's next top model went to far with this one. Thank you for bring awareness of modeling in reality shows versus real life.
I was in an abusive relationship, and managed to get out alive. I’m using my interest in forensics to become a forensic anthropologist to help the people who couldn’t escape those relationships alive. These pictures just degrade the dead. I’m disgusted by this shoot-in more ways than one.
I personally don’t hate the concept since I love horror movies and I think some of the shots looked great, the main issue I have is them having Jael do this after a week of her losing her friend, that was insensitive and horrible of them.
I do love this photoshoot and is one of my favorites in ANTM history, as someone who loves horror, the concept for this photoshoot and the execution is fantastic Though i feel bad that Jael had to go through this shortly after losing her friend, if not Jay, production should've done something, bc if Jay didn't know, production def knew
as i a fan of the show, this was one of my fav shoots back then. I don't think there's that much of a problem (besides making Jael doing this after her friend died, same as Kahleen un C4) its a Disturbing concept and fashion Is about art, and this Is some form of It.
When it comes to art (photography) you have to detach your personal feelings from it. Personal feelings aside, (I do feel the shoot was insensitive to not only Jael but to victims of abuse everywhere) I thought the photography was absolutely incredible. Everything about it was perfect.
I looove the concept and the final pictures, some people just aren't able to appreciate it since it's "creepy" and that's okay, to each their own. I personally don't find it creepy at all, we're all gonna die anyways and the make up was done super well so props to the artists that worked on it! Also obviously jael deserved better, she should've been excused from this whole thing but oh well, this show is literally hell
Also they don’t know if any of the girls have had s*icide ideation or actually made attempts. To see a beat up/dead picture of yourself is sooo traumatising.
I've noticed that on seasons where one of the girls loses a loved one, there is a death-themed scene. They did it to that one girl with the 7 deadly sins in the grave photoshoot, they did it to Jael, I'm sure there's one or two more. Just blatant emotional manipulation by the producers
As a fan of the dark and gloomy art, some of these definitely scream "art" to me. Especially ones that are less "fashion-y" and really brings the mood. Not everything has to be PC, Jess. Especially not art. I agree that it's a dck move for the makers of the show to force the models to do this instead of making it their choice, but I'm liking like 0-70% of the result. Besides, most of us have our own secret fascination of the morbid things, some of them might not know that they actually would want to try it.
Jess is always PC. That’s why she does this reviews to get PC and call out everything that happened years and years ago as if you’d expect everyone should be woke as how it is today. She always review the ones she could point out what’s politically wrong and rarely focuses on the shoots and photos cause she focuses too much on the political issues she could bring up. I thought I was a softie SJW snowflake until I’ve seen these younger generation of vloggers who are softer than me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still an SJW and activist. But these kids nowadays are being too much sometimes. Can’t believe I’m even saying that. I’m so glad I was born in the political transition era where I’ve seen the wrongs and seen them corrected. I get to balance things. I do understand now why a lot of older generation despise the fact that the younger generation is too soft. Oh well, I think we really can’t be perfect as a society.
I take pictures like this regularly, there is a surprisingly high demand for it in the film industry (for example: if they show pictures of a crime scene in a movie)
But this isn't a picture set up like an actual crime scene, this is a crime scene that is supposed to be "FASHION". The glamorizing of death in this shoot is way different than recreating pictures of a crime scene for a movie.
@@lukeguccii That's supposed to be “entertainment“ ( or at least what they belive is entertainment ) it has nothing to do with the actual work of a model.
Seeing the final shots made me want to cry. I actually had tears welling up. I know I have not been in these situations and hoping many have not, but they were really hard to watch. I am sorry if this episode was triggering to people and so sorry to Jael.
Shoutout to my friend Azizi, go say hello here!! instagram.com/azizi__donnelly
NOTE: This was shot in late 2020, but I wasn't sure if I was going to post this video...so I am a BIT late uploading it! Here it is though!

Jessica I would love you to react to any episode from cycle *23* I am wondering what is your opinion about Rita Ora vs Tyra
I love seeing you and your friend Azizi react to this. A photographer and a model's reaction helps us see and understand what is legit and what isn't.
RIP Jael 😔
It didn't cross the line. It's a silly reality show.
As a first responder who’s seen way too many actual crime scenes, this is uncomfortably close to reality. The pictures look like a glorification and sexualization of real life violence toward women.
I can imagine anyone working in emergency response or anyone who's seen stuff like this first hand would hate it. Glad to see you calling it out.
And the whole show is this sexist btw
My thoughts exactly.
This comment >
Spot on! Exactly my thoughts!
I think that this is misplaced and in a wrong tone, you do horror they are doing FASHION
Making Jael do a scene like this a week after her friend died seems so pre-calculated to me it reminds me of when they did that to Kahlen on cycle 4 when she had to literally be put in a coffin right after finding out her friend died
I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to trigger her or the other models with the concept.
Imagine if they made her do like she was dead by overdose
I was thinking that same thing
I'm sure that's exactly what they did. They absolutely know what they are doing and just trying to make "good" tv.
This is really sad bcuz Jael actually died!!

@DOOM! This exactly.
He found out after her shoot was over though…?
but literally how were they supposed to know that- its not their fault and she didnt speak up until AFTER the shoot
Makes me think Tyra and the producers are kinda sadistic for doing that..
Like this isn’t the first time they made someone do a death shoot after losing someone..
Not the first time. They did it to another model that they made her go into a coffin and lowered her down has if she was being barried.😞
About Jael:
In 2012, Strauss was reported to be battling methamphetamine addiction.

Omfg
Woah, I never put that together! 😳

Had they used something like "this is what abuse can look like" i would have liked it better. We have a yearly event in my city where women gets their makeup done to simulate abuse and then they stand in the city square in silence. This to bring attention to domestic abuse. Had the photoshoot had the same theme, it would have been great, because the makeup was done really well on some of the girls, and if they had ditched the lingerie.
agreed, if they had brought attention to it rather than glorify it, it would have been much better
Missed oportunity. But it's ANTM, they don't dare to do something right
yeah the lingerie thing was weird...
Keep up the videos hun!
ikr, people can't excuse with "MoDeLlInG iNdUsTrY Is lIkE tHiS" if people in industry say "actually no"
Okay but clearly neither of them work in high fashion.
Funny how they always manage to "accidently" do a death shoot right after a contestants friend has died.
It could have been great, but they used the wrong context
the general idea and some photos, but a lot of them are just far too sexualized and "pretty" to ever be used in an abuse awareness campain.
Damn what that sounds interesting. I'm gonna look it up cuz I'm a true crime nerd lol

@@MissShiniSato thank you. It really is an ugly and vile concept for a photo shoot.
They have a girl that just lost a friend, made her do this photoshot, then bringing up AGAIN her friend during photoshot, then telling her "You can't let it affect you"
like, it's almost as this photoshot about death it's emotional to a person in grief
it's still unbelievable how they made Jael go through that when they knew that her friend passed away before this photoshoot , I still feel that they did that on purpose to get drama
Jael herself was also a drug addict at the time this was filmed so it must have been extra hard for her to deal with as well knowing she was every bit at risk of an OD as her friend.
She managed to get clean but unfortunately passed away of Cancer when she was just 34.
The way he spoke to her was just so out of line.
Oh, they absolutely did this because Jael's friend recently died before this!
I think this is just really distasteful and can be so triggering, it's not ok to romanticize crimes/violence for fashion purposes. What if you have a loved one that has been shot and you see this, with models and creative director just giggling around, treating this subjects with no respect, I mean.. This is so not ok imo

Despite what went down with Jael, this was actually one of my favorite shoots from ANTM. It was macabre but fascinatingly fabulous at the same time.
I think the 'disturbing ' part is the emotional abuse as opposed to the actual photoshoot.
I disagree. this concept would be cool for models fully informed and choosing to do this. Forcing models into this is not ok, ESPECIALLY for Jael.

Did you mean to say juvenile? As in underage?
Yeah, I think the problem was the execution. If they went for a more horror look, instead of trying to make it...beautiful...it would have worked better. Because murder is horror, not beauty, and I think that's what's making it uncomfortable
@@luna-p Hm, underage wasn't really what I meant, probably my bad Engslish skills showed up once more :D I just meant young, let's not complicate it.

AZIZI!!!! She’s back!! I’m so excited! More please! I love you two!

It feels like they're not only setting up the models to be uncomfortable or even triggered, but anyone involved with the photo shoot and anyone who sees the photos - especially outside of the given "context."
And to be honest, even the context feels like a bold faced lie.
RIP Jael.
Such a strong and traumatized person. It's incredibly sad. I'm sorry that she suffered so much.
Maybe I'm too much of a horror fan but I would have the time of my life modeling for this theme
Jennifer's Body is awesome
@@Jess-Rabbit IKR!?!? ❤ 😍
I did a “horror” shoot with a friend for her makeup school final. BUT that was a choice and we talked through the entire look and concept before I even showed up to the shoot. This is sad, no matterHOW the final photos look
They aren’t just glorifying violence they are sexualising it as well. So gross.
LMFAO SIS HOW?!? A reach
@@th-bb4bk they're in lingerie. OP wasn't reaching.
context of the historical time in entertainment is also important here. this was the shining era of CSI, where there was a massive boom of crime scene shows and this sort of modeling was in heavy demand.
But they are cool concepts though.
I love how real Azizi is when she said she would not take this job. Because for real, it can't be taken seriously in a models portfolio
This was such a cool concept, the photographer is amazing and the pictures came out so incredible! Btw i love you including Azizi in yiur videos
I agree. I've been scrolling through the comments, and most are favorable off the shoot. To me it was interesting.
I think a warning at the beginning of this video is a good idea. Other than that, love having Azizi's input as a model!
I don't necessarily think this theme would always cross a line, but they're not checking the models boundaries and that's an automatic no.
Love the dynamic between you and Azizi! And yeah, this whole shoot is insane.
As incredibly disturbing that this photoshoot was these girls KILLED IT!!! Literally. Ha!
FINALLY! You featured it! Thank you!
It's disturbing to see Renee like that. She turned got a drug addiction after a few years this show ended. She's in prison and regrets everything 💔
Honestly the most surprising part of this shoot is they didn't make jael play a girl who had overdosed. The downright sadism of some of these shoots.
Trigger warnings only really propped up in the past 5 years. They didn’t really exist back then
I enjoy the gore concept however I think this would only work for makeup artist practice and adding to their portfolio vs it going to a models portfolio
Horror genre: *exists*
Jessica & Azizi: *surprised Pikachu face*
I was in an abusive relationship, and managed to get out alive. I’m using my interest in forensics to become a forensic anthropologist to help the people who couldn’t escape those relationships alive. These pictures just degrade the dead. I’m disgusted by this shoot-in more ways than one.
Bravo for getting out of this nasty relationship and having a fantastic career.
they think anything can be glamorous
I’m happy to see a working model react to the clownery and also the scam this show was.
I personally don’t hate the concept since I love horror movies and I think some of the shots looked great, the main issue I have is them having Jael do this after a week of her losing her friend, that was insensitive and horrible of them.
I do love this photoshoot and is one of my favorites in ANTM history, as someone who loves horror, the concept for this photoshoot and the execution is fantastic
Though i feel bad that Jael had to go through this shortly after losing her friend, if not Jay, production should've done something, bc if Jay didn't know, production def knew
as i a fan of the show, this was one of my fav shoots back then. I don't think there's that much of a problem (besides making Jael doing this after her friend died, same as Kahleen un C4)
its a Disturbing concept and fashion Is about art, and this Is some form of It.
Makes me think of band where it was actually written on our sheet music "play as fast as possible but not faster" 😂
To see a beat up/dead picture of yourself is sooo traumatising.
very true!!
Azizi seems like such a sweet person.
That definitely makes sense if the model consents to a specific project. This was just sprung on them. O.O
But this isn't a picture set up like an actual crime scene, this is a crime scene that is supposed to be "FASHION". The glamorizing of death in this shoot is way different than recreating pictures of a crime scene for a movie.
@@sarakjeldsen769 yes that's true
@@lukeguccii That's supposed to be “entertainment“ ( or at least what they belive is entertainment ) it has nothing to do with the actual work of a model.
Seeing the final shots made me want to cry. I actually had tears welling up. I know I have not been in these situations and hoping many have not, but they were really hard to watch.
I am sorry if this episode was triggering to people and so sorry to Jael.
