WHY is this one of the greatest World Cup games ever? 6 reasons: QUALITY - CRESCENDO - ROLLERCOASTER - CONTRAST - DRAMA - TRAGEDY - QUALITY: Six goals. Great saves by GKs. Most of the game played in the final third of each team due to rapid counter-offensives. Great passing sequences (mostly France). Dribbling (Littbarski, Tigana, Amoros, Briegel). - CRESCENDO: Very good 90 minutes with two goals, even better 30 minutes of extra time with 4 great goals. - ROLLERCOASTER: Germany scored first. France tied, went ahead. Germany tied again during extra-time. - DRAMA: Penalty shootout with a rollercoaster of its own, as Germany came back once more, after Stielike had missed. - TRAGEDY: Had Schumacher fouled Battiston outside of the Seville stadium, he would have been arrested and charged for assault crime. Worst, Dutch referee inaction (no red card for Schumacher, no free kick for France). - CONTRAST: The artistic and creative France vs the physical and disciplined Germany, with a painful historic past (Napoleon’s occupation of Germany, Nazi occupation of France).
Same kind of accident than me beating you up in a baseball game in a bat. He went straight for the french player and didn't try to avoid the collision..
Stop, he's defending his net - Battiston could also keep his head up ? And proof, if he had, he probably would have avoided the goalie and maybe even scored because if you noticed he misses wide. Why ? Because he's looking at his feet.

Here's what Coerver, the ref, said in 2010. I remember thinking at the time that maybe he had been watching the ball. “It was the best semi-final ever played during any final tournament on any continent. I never saw the incident, as everyone’s eyes in the stadium followed the ball. The moment I saw Battiston prone on the pitch, I went over to my assistant Robert Valentine from Scotland, who told me it was not intentional. Even Dutch television commentator Evert ten Napel admitted that he too followed the ball’s course, which went just wide. Throughout the rest of the match the players never gave me grief for the decision either. Yes, in retrospect, I should have sent Schumacher off, of course, for using excessive force.”
I remember this game vividly as a great game. So many goals after the first 90 and in such dramatic fashion. Klaus fisher, Karl Heinz Rummenigge.....legendary players whom came through in brilliant fashion. I vaguely remember this incident though. I don't think I ever realized how serious his injury was. Probably with today's HD technology, we might be able to scrutinize that hit a bit more. It certainly appeared intentional.
I saw it too, aged 39, and didn't realise how badly Battiston was injured. Not much was made of it at the time. Having seen it quite a few times I can see that it is murderously intentional.
I saw it like you, and I can´t understand your memory loss. France was the best team of Spain 82. Don't you remember Platini, Tigana, Giresse, Trésor, Rocheteau, only the germans. Battiston went out KO, the match was stopped for ten or fifteen minutes, later Platini said that he thought for a moment that "son ami était mort". Schumacher with his knee and hip crashed on Battiston head on opposite runs, it means 40 mph, his teeth are nobody knows where, he never reacted that day. More than HD you have to change your glasses. The match continued. After this intent of murder. Battiston has kicked the ball over Schumacher's head, KRASHH !!, the ball rolls and went out two inches from the vertical. One man on the grass half dead. The referee marks ball from the goal line for Germany, and so goes on the match. Not a red, yellow or observation for Toni. A real mess for the referee. Show must go on.
Being born quite some years after 1982, I had not really seen any footage of this match before, only knew Germany went through to the final. I absolutely agree that Schumacher deserved to be sent off for the foul, but I don't think it was in any way a malicious attempt to injure Battiston. He even said it himself in this documentary, he was concerned about him but couldn't do anything at the time. When he was finally able to apologise to Battiston, the Frenchman forgave him, and everyone else should do the same. The fact that 40 years (!) on some people are still salty about one foul says more about them than Toni Schumacher.

1982 was probably the best world cup. Brazil, France, Italy, Germany were incredibly good teams. Then there were the likes of Spain and England who were pretty strong.
What?? France was fantastic in the 1980s! Platini, Trésor, Girese! Euro 1984, and World Cup semifinals in 1982 and 1986. And let's not forget the fantastic squad in 1958, with Just Fontaine scoring 13 goals in the tournament, a record. It's a very biased view that you hold, France *was* really good several times before Zidane; maybe not as good, but incredible nonetheless

In an interview Schumacher said that he apologized to Battiston and he accepted it saying that this episode was closed.
Is it just me or do the French goalkeeper (is it Bats?) and Schumacher look insanely alike😂 Also, who else sees the similarities between Schumacher's assault and Neuer's collision with Higuain, even with the caveat that Neuer did get the ball?
It took me 7 years to comment, ha ha. Charles Korver was incompetent. Schumacher should have been sent off, no question about that. There are many more controversies. IF VAR and Goal-line Technology would have been in place in 1966, imagine what could have happened? Some examples:1966: 3 - 2 , England-West Germany. The ball didn't cross the line in full! 1974: penalty for West-Germany was a 'Schwalbe' by Holzenbein. 1986: The infamous 'hand of god', Maradona; 2002: Brazil-Belgium, a perfect good goal by Belgium was disallowed; 2006: Penalty for Italy against Australia was a joke! 2010: Lampard's shot vs. Germany was 30 cm over the line, but not given.
Refiro-me ao goleiro Schumacher.
My friend and I often had debate whether some fouls are deliberate to hurt/injure. He, being naive at its best, refused to accept that players (sometimes) intended to hurt their opponents. Of course it's hard to prove the intention but we can clearly see if the tackle is late or not meant to get the ball at all. Thanks to youtube it's all clear now.
Schumacher didn't regret anything, in later interview he said he would "proceed" in the same way again. Dangerous people should be behind bars , not at the pitch.
Le scandale, ce n'est pas que Schumacher ait commis cette agression sur Battiston. On apprend ici qu'ils se sont revus et réconciliés et c'est très bien. Le scandale, c'est que cette action méritait l'expulsion immédiate du gardien allemand, ce qui aurait évidemment changé l'issue du match, et peut-être celle du tournoi;
It was a foul for body checking a player in possession so a yellow or red card, but in the penalty area so a penalty, and blatantly fouling an attacker as last defender in front of goal another red, and reckless play so another red - summary instead of 2 or 3 reds he gets a goal kick.
That goalkeeper should have been arrested for assault and marched and humiliated across the length of the pitch in handcuffs to send a clear message to the thugs in the World that assault on a pitch is no different to assault in the street and locked up for 5 years. Proof: showed no remorse; it was deliberate. Where I come from there was a player called Richard Lowe he was a low act and I am glad we lost the 95 Rugby WC because they would not get rid of him until he eye-gouged a player in a provincial match a year or so later. Then there was Robert "the coward" Dipierdomenco who was being outplayed by Rod Parker in Aussie Rules Final so smashes his cheekbone; that the day I stopped barracking for Hawthorn. GET RID OF THE THUGS. Anyone care to comment?
The most disgraceful moment in the World Cup history. Schumacher is the reason why Germany don’t get well deserved support from the fans around the world. Compare number of people wearing Argentina and Brazil jerseys with those in Germany jerseys.
Worst attempt to hurt an opponent in world cup history. Reaction after collusion only adress this. Not even one german player went to check what is going on and this monster is standing hands on his hip lookin bored.

FIFATV This was a very good French team, one of my all time favorites, but I suppose the '86 team was seen as better by most. I strongly believe that both France and Brasil were deliberately cheated out of appearing in the '82 final. 1982 was probably the best world cup. Brazil, France, Italy, Germany were incredibly good teams. Then there were the likes of Spain and England who were pretty strong.
Germany didnt even deserve going through the group stage back then
This doorkeeper should had red card and banned from football games forever
Is it just me or do the French goalkeeper (is it Bats?) and Schumacher look insanely alike😂
Also, who else sees the similarities between Schumacher's assault and Neuer's collision with Higuain, even with the caveat that Neuer did get the ball?
His name is Ettori.
And the penalty for Germany against Argentina in 1990 WC final.
This was the best game I've ever seen.
Come on, FIFA TV. Smarten Up.
Lower the original audio and turn up the translation. Amazed that you have to be told this.
Le scandale, ce n'est pas que Schumacher ait commis cette agression sur Battiston. On apprend ici qu'ils se sont revus et réconciliés et c'est très bien. Le scandale, c'est que cette action méritait l'expulsion immédiate du gardien allemand, ce qui aurait évidemment changé l'issue du match, et peut-être celle du tournoi;
Three days later?!!! Did I hear that right? Did they play the World Cup's final three days later? Seriously?
It was a foul for body checking a player in possession so a yellow or red card, but in the penalty area so a penalty, and blatantly fouling an attacker as last defender in front of goal another red, and reckless play so another red - summary instead of 2 or 3 reds he gets a goal kick.
Rematch today... May the best team win.
Headlights :34
That Schumacher assault cost France its World Cup......They have the best midfield in their France history but its just not enought
Whose music is played at the beginning of this video?
Sort the sound out ffs
I dont believe a word of yours :) you showed us during WW2 your true face,Hans ;) Poles will never forget it.
Wow
Schumacher had doping in his body(I was 15 years That time). It was and still is nog normale what hė did.Totally crazy
Not as worse than Eric Cantona slashing - this is accidental
This was when being stretched off meant something serious..
In a public poll, Schumacher was voted as the most hated German in France above Hitler
The most disgraceful moment in the World Cup history. Schumacher is the reason why Germany don’t get well deserved support from the fans around the world. Compare number of people wearing Argentina and Brazil jerseys with those in Germany jerseys.
Who cares?
I dont think I am ever playing soccer again :(
Thoni Schumacher legend
i'm from Kuwait !
He was one of my top favorite goalkeepers at the time... but the foul was vicious and terrible....
Who's here from MOTD?
I thought that Didier Six's Penalty had never been filmed. 😁
I remembered that game vividly. If you're not blind, Schumacher was not aiming at the ball but the player. Why he did that?
+andavid2007 You're blind
the german players took pills, like the ones they already took in 54 to win the WC
Worst attempt to hurt an opponent in world cup history. Reaction after collusion only adress this. Not even one german player went to check what is going on and this monster is standing hands on his hip lookin bored.
Battistons pulse stoped for a few seconds after the hit
Schumacher should have been prosecuted for attempting murder then. What an asshole.

THE BEST OF THE BEST ... BRAZIL.. in Benito Villamarin Stadium .. in Seville /Spain !!!
7:1
the voice levels are off, the natural sound should have been much softer, the narration much louder......
I didn’t watch the final. The thought of Schumacher being involved in it was too bad.
Is this the greatest French team ever? Should they have gone to the Final in 1982? What do you think about the collision?
FIFATV. Greatest french team ever was the one in Mexico 86.
I think Schumacher should have been sent out and as usual the referee was too scared to book a German player. Germany plays one the dirtiest soccer but never get a red card. How should people trust FIFA seing that? It's like trusting the guy holding a gun at your forehead saying "trust me, I won't use it".

This was a very good French team, one of my all time favorites, but I suppose the '86 team was seen as better by most.
I strongly believe that both France and Brasil were deliberately cheated out of appearing in the '82 final.
No penalty for Scum-aker's dangerous play, and no penalty for Gentile pulling down Zico, ripping his shirt in the penalty area.
Schumacher was a goon.
any french team with zidane is the best.
no
Trending because of Iceland.
Schumacher fight the face of Battiston with his hip
This video is FIFA's attempt to minimize the incident.
