I am German and totally agree with you. German Fans never forgot this incident. He showed no remorse. I remember watching this match in a pub in Belgium during a vacation. When Schumacher knocked but this man down, we left for safety reasons.
Even Cologne fans admitted this.

If he had that challenge today, that would be a red card, a penalty given & he would be suspended for months & fined too. That challenge was wicked and malicious.
I've read somewhere Rummenigge say that after the incident with Batiston, the German team was no longer motivated/hyped to win the final match against Italy. Their team spirit had deflated after that dirty victory over France!

Schumacher after the game, when he learned that Battiston had lost two teeth: "If that's all that's wrong, tell him I'll pay for the crowns."Not exactly weighed down by remorse.
Disgusting response. Schumacher should have been sent home from the world cup and France should have beat Germany in this game. Harald Schumacher: lunges on Battitston
Italy : Not to worry, I will avenge this.
I remember watching this game with my brother as a kid and my dad coming home late wondering why we hadn't gone to bed yet. Really impressive French team hard done by that incident since they couldn't make another substitution. One of the most dramatic games in World Cup history.
I forgot about that. France essentially played 10 vs 11, and Schumacher and the German team were rewarded for this thuggery.
We don't finish at 10 vs 11, we had one subsitute (first change was Genghini at 50' injuried by Kaltz, subituted... by Battiston)
But after Schumacher attack on Battiston, Hidalgo had no midfield anymore. Lopez (defender) entered as midfield but had no impact on game.
End of match was difficult for french team because of early subsitute with loss physical freshness.
One of the greatest games in the history of the world cup as far as tension is concerned.
But man as a German myself I can understand if the French hate us forever for this challenge 😅 it should have meant a red card and a penalty.

The Germans deserved to lose to Italy in the final. The keeper should have been sent off and a penalty given to France. Then justice would have been served because France would have been in the final.

This gruesome moment was also a blessing in disguise for French football after this delusion France wasn't the same anymore.
France learned this day hard way style how to act against big teams.
Since the end of the 80's France is becoming another heavyweight who doesn't fear team like Germany anymore.
It definitely is a heavyweight!
This mans voice is REALLY ANNOYING!
Not at all. Except for euro 84 (won at home against second-tier teams) they won nothing for 16 years. And they even failed at qualifying for two world cups in a row. They started winning only when they coupled physical strength of players from former colonies and tactical wisdom learnt in the italian serie A during the 90s.
West Germany beat the French again in the 1986 WC semi-final (2-0). Schumacher was in goal then, too.
If Schumacher did that to someone on the street, he would be done for assault.
To be fair, that is true of clean football tackles, too.
Un des plus grands scandales de l'histoire de la Coupe du Monde 😬😭
The Fritzes have bribed many, many referees.

Schumacher will always be remembered as the goalkeeper who tried to severely injure Battiston in order to keep him from scoring.

Just to set the record straight, as a goalkeeper at that time, i can confirm that it was a legal, though unfortunate tackle. Keepers when jumping for the ball, were allowed to raise our knee and even show pegs as a keeper's guard.
If not for that rule, hundreds of keepers would be injured by attacking players at every cross or corner.
