    I am German and totally agree with you. German Fans never forgot this incident. He showed no remorse. I remember watching this match in a pub in Belgium during a vacation. When Schumacher knocked but this man down, we left for safety reasons.

    If he had that challenge today, that would be a red card, a penalty given & he would be suspended for months & fined too. That challenge was wicked and malicious.

      I've read somewhere Rummenigge say that after the incident with Batiston, the German team was no longer motivated/hyped to win the final match against Italy. Their team spirit had deflated after that dirty victory over France!

      Well considering what happened to suarez who was banned for 3-4 months just for bitting an opponent, this was much bigger offence probably 8-9 months like cantona got. Perhaps the biggest letoff of a player in WC for any violent conduct

      Imagine fouls don't count because the ball his out or because the player injured already made the pass. Are you serious?

If the advantage is given and the play is concluded, the ref cannot go back and give the foul, but he can still penalize the player who made the foul (which didnt count bc of advantage) with a yellow/red card, and that's what should've happened

      Disgusting response. Schumacher should have been sent home from the world cup and France should have beat Germany in this game. What a disgrace that Schumacher now will forever be more remembered for this incident than anything else. Poor Battiston, there is no excuse for this and it is unbelievable he was not given a red card and Battiston a penalty here.

      The proof he was a very limited defender is the number of fouls he did. 23 fouls on Maradona for an example. 23 in one game. Insane.
      If Gentile was so strong, he needn't to foul so much. And he is proud of that furthermore.

      Compared his weak level to the back left il bello Antonio Cabrini.
      Cabrini was 100 time better than this nasty man of Gentile in defense and offense and needn't to cheat thanks to these great skills. Same for Scirea or Tardelli. 2 Great players.
      If Gentile didn't play at Juve (blocco Juve), he wouldn't have played for Italy. I hate this player and this man.

    I remember watching this game with my brother as a kid and my dad coming home late wondering why we hadn't gone to bed yet. Really impressive French team hard done by that incident since they couldn't make another substitution. One of the most dramatic games in World Cup history.

      We don't finish at 10 vs 11, we had one subsitute (first change was Genghini at 50' injuried by Kaltz, subituted... by Battiston)
      But after Schumacher attack on Battiston, Hidalgo had no midfield anymore. Lopez (defender) entered as midfield but had no impact on game.
      End of match was difficult for french team because of early subsitute with loss physical freshness.

    But man as a German myself I can understand if the French hate us forever for this challenge 😅 it should have meant a red card and a penalty.

    I can remember watching this game as a 16 year old. Without doubt one of the greatest games I have ever seen. For the first time ever I supported France in this game and was gutted they lost. The Germans deserved to lose to Italy in the final. The keeper should have been sent off and a penalty given to France. Then justice would have been served because France would have been in the final.

      @@kropcise I disagree. Great players don't need to assault other players to get advantage, and was he greater than Platini, Giresse, Zico or Rossi? I don't think so. I am not even sure Germany should have gotten out of the two group stages that year. They were not a better team than France, Italy, Brazil, England or Poland that year in my opinion.

    He played for our team Fenerbahce.He did very well and made incredible season 88/89.We broke the goal record with 103 goals and 93 points in a single season with him.He was the most famous player we have ever seen at that time. We will always remember you!!

    This gruesome moment was also a blessing in disguise for French football after this delusion France wasn't the same anymore.
    France learned this day hard way style how to act against big teams.
    Since the end of the 80's France is becoming another heavyweight who doesn't fear team like Germany anymore.

      Not at all. Except for euro 84 (won at home against second-tier teams) they won nothing for 16 years. And they even failed at qualifying for two world cups in a row. They started winning only when they coupled physical strength of players from former colonies and tactical wisdom learnt in the italian serie A during the 90s.

    This world cup had few very special moments. The Algeria/Germany/Austria scandal (a.k.a "the digrace of Gijon"), the kuwaiti prince canceling a french goal in France-Kuwait pool match and this dramatic semi-final.

    #1 Battiston assault. No penalty...
    # 2 Zico being grabbed by the maillot, in the penalty area, so much so that his maillot was shredded... No penalty.

      Corruption. They all wanted a RFA vs Italy game. France wasn't big enough on the footballing stage at the time. Things are going our way since 1998. We needed 98 to finish the grieving process.

    Being Dutch and 18 at that time, I’ll never forget crying in front of the TV, thanks to a Dutch referee. Battiston lost four teeth and Schumi later admitted it was on purpose.

    I am an 1.FC Koeln fan, and Schumacher is born in the same town as I was, In Dueren. But after seeing him act like this ( i was 12 years old that time) I really did not want to be his compatriot anymore.

    Now a days, the German keeper would have been sent off for sure plus a penalty for France.

      In Germany Beckenbauelr is called "the Kaiser", so he got his share of fame. The German goal getter of that time is totally underrated internationally: Gerd "Chubby little" Mueller. He had an outstanding instinct.

    He would probably have been in the SS if he'd been born 30 years earlier , such was his lack of remorse. Possibly the worst challenge I've ever seen on a football pitch .

      Germany lost the final 3-1. The next world cup Germany lost 3-2 in the final. They finally won in 1990, but Schumacher was not a part of the squad.

    Red card and penalty, not only following nowadays' standards, but also in those days. Terrible mistake by the referee, most probably a game-changing one. This is just another reason why VAR is much better - even with some of its disadvantages - than no VAR at all.

    It was a dramatic game of football. France ought to have won as they were 3-1 up but they didnt know how to defend. As for the foul i think the ref, like the viewers, were following the ball. No one suspected a thing until the slo mo.

    Just to set the record straight, as a goalkeeper at that time, i can confirm that it was a legal, though unfortunate tackle. Keepers when jumping for the ball, were allowed to raise our knee and even show pegs as a keeper's guard.
    If not for that rule, hundreds of keepers would be injured by attacking players at every cross or corner.

      I think the only difference here is the Schumacher did not go for the ball but for Patrick Battiston’s head. As as a 15 yr old French kid, this was one of the most memorable and heartbreaking game I watched. I was camping with a youth group in the French alps and watched the game in a restaurant. German tourist next to us were very quiet after the events

      I see nothing bad from Schumi, Battiston already lost the ball. It was at the limit of the penalty area...For many parameters, Germany has been the greatest team of that decade . Just see how they equalized and won the encounter. I like that flighting spirit!!! EVen at 10 against 11 French, Germany would have won, surely!
