Had the pleasure to know Pele during the 1970's when he played for the Cosmos and when he visited Jersey City to play with Santos against Italian teams. Traveled with the Cosmos and Pele when I was a sports writer for two daily newspapers in New Jersey. I never saw him refuse an autograph or a handshake. He was incredible both on and off the field. And when I met him again in Athens, Greece 10 years ago, he remembered my name. Pele, my friend, RIP.
Pele introduced so many dribbling movements and patterned runs as a striker that had never been seen before that we now see as just simple and basic things. He had the ability to play as a "False 9" before that was even really a thing and as a pure targetman/poacher and could flip from one to the other in the same match or same sequence of play. @subhadeep mandal I have seen stuff Pelé did that Maradona could never do and vice versa.
“Pelé, the master and his method” is the title of the series of videos shot in the 70s with Pelé and where he generously taught his technique to the whole world… Thank you Pelé, with you football has become a game of dream and the story of your childhood became the myth of the poor kid who becomes rich and famous thanks to his soccer genius. This myth is still alive in the minds of all young people. Some pretend they have never heard of you but imitate your gestures. You are Pele, the King of football, long imitated never equaled. Pele introduced so many dribbling movements and patterned runs as a striker that had never been seen before that we now see as just simple and basic things. The man who gave football its name has passed today. There’s not enough words in the dictionary that can help summarize what this man’s life signifies. Football was relatively obscure in the beginning of the 20th century until Pelé stepped into the scene turning football into a “beautiful game”. Long before Maradona, Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappé. Pelé will forever be synonymous with Football. The only sportsman that became bigger than the sport itself. Beyond football, Pelé gave the world a reason to never underestimate the tenacity, strength and courage of African people. Despite enormous odds stacked against him, Pelé was the black rose that grew from concrete and went on to become the most beautiful rose the world has ever seen. Today we honor the life of Pelé, a descendant of enslaved Africans who breathed supernatural capability into him so that all the people of the earth may know that Africa is the cradle of humankind and all praise is due to the original people.
