I'm 67 years old and remember the 1970 world cup . My dad and I watched the greatest side of all time win it for the third time. Pele is the greatest of all time

Against popular belief, Pele actually didnt have much of an impact on international football. He got injured in the first game in 1962 world cup and didnt play the rest of the games. Brazil won the world cup without him, just goes to show that that Brazilian team was special and Pele just benefited from playing alongside great players. Then in 1966 world cup, Brazil got eliminated at the group stage. Yes the great Pele couldnt even get his national team to clear the group stage. After 1966, Pele dejected at not being able to replicate his (fortuitous) heroics of 1958 decided to retire. Then in 1970, when Pele saw that Brazil had again managed to build a great team consisting of the Jairzinho, Tostao, Rivelino and Gerson, he jumped at the opportunity and joined the national team again. In 1970, he scored goals against relatively weaker teams like Romania and Czech and then didnt do anything in the crucial KO matches. People unnecessarily hyped his every move like the famous rounding the keeper in the sf where instead of scoring an easy goal he tried to outsmart the keeper and ended up missing an open goal. It was the other attacking players mentioned abovewho dragged Brazil to the final. And then in the final like his protegee Ronaldo, he scored an easy tapin from 2 yards (notice how the defender marking him didnt even jump). Brazil won that game 4-1, I urge you to watch the other goals in that match, specially the screamer from outside the box and you'll realize how Pele again hogged the limelight for nothing (just like Ronaldo would RM while Ramos, Bale scored crucial, classier goals). So to summarize, Pele got lucky in the 1958 world cup, didnt do anything for the next 12 years (supposedly his prime) and then played in a great Brazilian team in 1970 and hogged the limelight. If he is regarded as the GOAT by some for these world cup wins, people need to check their facts.

Pelé is actually left-handed. He used both legs equally effectively, not to mention his headers. None of the other so-called greats had/have this arsenal. Most of his records will likely remain unsurpassed. There is no basis for any debate as to whether he was the best ever.

Pele was young player of the tournament in 58 and player of the tournament in 70 and if he were healthy in 62 he would probably be top scorer ahead of Klose. Pele has 12 goals in 14 wc games and 10 assists (world record) Messi hasn’t even scored in the knockout stage!! I think Di Stefano, Eusebio, Pele, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Nazario were all better than Messi, a number of people.

@@persaud101 plus the game was slower because the grass was trash and the ball was a lot heavier, thus making it harder to play, plus he played without yellow targets and a more restrictive offside. Yeah defenders have better strategies now and are better, but they won't beat you to death like back then (just look at the brasil vs portugal game in the 1966 world cup)
So has the training, nutrition, physical therapy, medicine, and money.

You can’t compare players from different eras. Pele was king of his time , Maradona his.. there overlapped probably but it is not correct to compare them amongst themselves . And then with current ones Messe and Ronaldo. Different time different soccer balls different shoes etc etc etc.

But all said and done Maradona was my era champion when I was kid. So he is special for me. I never saw Pele play live.
Maradona and soccer ball were created together in the heavens for each other. Just look at both of them playing with each other. Hard to distinguish who is playing who.. in games and in practice.
