did you say "pump the unit down and change the schraeder core"? why not use the core remover tools? they work perfectly fine. i guess it only takes a few minutes to pump a unit down, but i dont see the point?

Change the Schrader and charge it up. Then ask if they want to go further.

theres no real way to know how low a system is. but judging by the size of the factory charge and what the symptoms are........ive always been able to ballpark it fairly close. never perfectly, but typically within a pound or so. i generally use percentages in my head based off of what the system is doing. if its low but not freezing its probably only 10% low or so (also depends on other factors, same as everything). if its freezing youre probably closer to 30% or more low. if its freezing and your gauges are reading very low numbers youre 50-60% or so. if its not freezing and very very low, youre probably 80-90% or more low. then just run your numbers.....factory charge of 10 pounds and youre 30% low......means you need 3 pounds give or take. all these numbers are very ballparky numbers that are gonna change based on other factors and youre experiences in the field. start guessing at how low a system is before you charge it, even if the customer doesnt ask. then youll know how far off you were, begin adjusting your numbers in your head until you can get closer over time. its not scientific at all, but experience will fine tune your numbers eventually. its really not that difficult after you do it for a while.
