Back at my computer repair job from a few years back, we removed those kinds of adhesive from computers by using a little wooden skewer stick. The idea is that you approach it perpendicular to the adhesive and rotate the stick so that the adhesive sticks to the stick, and then you can roll it the opposite direction of the direction you're removing the adhesive. Doing that greatly reduces the amount of scratching that takes place with the initial scrape plus can also help make sure that the adhesive doesn't break halfway while also (hopefully) not breaking any cables in the path. But it looks like it doesn't matter too much for **THE GREATEST TECHNICIAN THAT'S EVER LIVED**
A good idea would be to start up the imac after you connect the screen but before you stick the screen on the frame. (you can hold it externally in place with some tape temporarily). This way you can check that everything is working. If you have made a mistake and you need to re-open the imac, you will have to carry out again the same process of buying new adhesive, cleaning the old one etc.
One bit of advice that makes the whole thing a lot easier, lay the computer down on the table to do the repair rather than standing up. There's less of a chance of dropping the screen and breaking it, much easier. Additionally, when you're done, test it all out by securing the screen with painters blue tape to make sure everything works before putting on the replacement adhesive.
I thought these were magnetic retention for the screen. I have a late 2009 version that still works. Can't upgrade the os nor Chrome or Firefox. I did install 16gb ram, but I think mine has a 3.5HDD and it needs a special carriage and cooling to install SSD.

Thanks for sharing! My first time visiting the channel. I have an IMac 22-inch screen. I was told that it couldn't be upgraded beyond Catalina. I hate I upgraded the IOS, so now my Adobe software doesn't work. I am not familiar with using the time machine, so I don't know If that would help. I plan to use it as a monitor to watch RUclips videos or play chill music in a sitting area I'm setting up. Maybe open a spreadsheet and surf the web. I will consider the HD upgrade when I have time on my hands to do nothing. This video will be my inspiration. 😃
I hate the adhesive on these so much when I upgraded it, I didn't bother. I just used clear duct tape, and taped it together. Can barely even tell it's tapped on. Makes getting inside much easier.
ok dude, thanks a lot with this video, i have 27 inch 2012 imac with i5 and ddr 3 8gb memory.. i surely will upgrade this thing because the screen is so good for editing photos. on my way upgrading my imac rn.
I’m learning how to try my hand at re-balling with hot air. This way I can dig through my old ddr 3 three ram sticks to see if I can remove chips from it then give my old MacBook more ram by re-balling new memory chips to it. If I mess it up oh well. The old laptop had to retire at some point. It’s the old way I can try to make an upgrade to a laptop that isn’t upgradable. And unfortunately the nvme is soldered too. So I can’t upgrade storage. That’s too complex to try and re-ball it. 8 gigs option should never exist. But people buy it so Apple keeps pushing it. Apple should sell their products with 16gigs minimum. Great video. But currently I don’t even have money to spend on old Mac’s which is why I’m still running my janky late models 2018 MacBook Pro that’s a furnace and slow as hell. Almost thinking about downgrading to the os versions that launched around the time this laptop did to see if I can speed this old laptop up. 👍
I have a 2010 MacBook pro that I upgraded the ram and threw an SSD. Used opencore to throw monetary on. Was quick as hell. Also had a 2016 MacBook air was pretty damn quick. I just fixed my Mac install on the 2010 today for a data repair job at work. How the hell is a 2018 MacBook pro slow... I use a gaming desktop so I know what an actual quick computer feels like. Maybe you have a virus or a bottleneck in your computer
@@Tuna-l7p it's the 13 inch most basic and lowest spec they had at the time just so I could afford it. I was surprised to learn this laptop has DDR 3 ram. I thought that by 2018 Apple had already moved over to DDR 4. It only had 8 gigs of ram and was always pegged when I would check constantly giving me the spinning wheel. As a test I threw on a version of Mojave which was the os it launched with and noticed a decent performance boost. Then threw on sequoia and noticed the performance go back to what it was. The OS just seems to bit heavier for the specs I have. This is why I wanted to throw on 16 gigs and see if that gave it a little boost. And less spinning wheel. But other programs I use is Logic Pro x for music production. iMovie and DaVinci resolve studio for video production. When it comes time to render is when the laptop goes full fan power heats up like crazy and struggles at a rate of 2 to 4 fps on video rendering and slightly faster for music production. As a comparison, my asus zen book with 16 gigs of ram and a discrete you renders at 15 to 20 fps and completes videos renders much quicker than my MBP. But that's usually only when I have to work on things remotely from a different location. At my home office I have a computer I built myself with 64 gigs of ddr 4 and an AMD 5950x for the processor coupled with a 16 gig version of the rtx 4060 ti card I render on average right around 200 fps which completes my renders way faster. Unfortunately I don't have 2 to 4 thousand to spend on a laptop with actual specs made to render DaVinci resolve and such. So more often than not I have my zen book with me and MBP had just been sitting ideal. Unless Im working on sound. That's all it's been used for recently. If ever I have a couple thousand just lying around I'll upgrade this tired old laptop to a better Mac. But currently I can't even walk by the apple section or go in a Mac store. Max I can spend is 900 bucks. And nothing Apple is currently selling is 900 bucks when it comes to their computers. But yeah. No virus. It's just slow. It works. It's a working laptop it's just like back in the days when you could power up the computer, go use the restroom, cook some breakfast, maybe have some coffee and just maybe by then it was ready to use. If I give this tired laptop time it does everything. I just can't expect quick results is all.
@@leosthrivwithautism I would run Mojave if you can then. ya apple sucks and they get away with a lot since the avg consumer doesn't know they bought crap until they turn it on and wonder why it runs slow. I tend to avoid recommending laptops but when I do I say to overcompensate and get something more then what you need. Since realistically a high end laptop in 4 years will become average. And an average laptop turns borderline unusable. With os updates and apps becoming more demanding over the years
I'm watching this on a 2011 imac, although I run Debian which stays current. The 2010 and 2011 panels are held in by magnets and torx instead of adhesive. There are also four cables to the video panel instead of two.
Replacing the drive and using OpenCore has been my go to for these - such an easy job for such a great end result. Also that pizza cutter is designed to be just deep enough to clear the adhesive without damaging the camera wiring. Also also, I did once touch the PSU accidentally, it shouldnt kill you but it is SUPREMELY unpleasant.
we have a 2009 iMac which currently runs Mac OS 10.13 patched to run on it as well as windows 7 with Bootcamp, and it works great! very good for word processing, videos, and school assignments.
i have the last thick imac 21.5 inch its a 2010 model and its surprising quick with the original hard drive! it is running mac os high sierra and i put 24 gb of ram in it! and yes i know thats unsupported for the ram but it does work with 0 issues... you have to use 2 1600 mhz ram and 2 1333 mhz ram sticks or it wont boot it will just beep if you dont use a combo of fast ram and slow ram... im thinking about putting big sur on it idk
i am still rocking a 2017 macbook and plan to send it out to have it upgraded to the max amount of ram which i think is 32gigs and also add an nvme ssd slot so i can upgrade from the 250gig soldered ssd

I was curious, have you ever considered (or done-I haven’t exactly gone back that far on your videos list) some videos on basic tools or skills for computer or phone repair, or the kind of basic maintenance you would hope people would be able to do on their own? I know there are tons of how-tos and such, but it can be hard to know what you don’t know, you know? A video or two that just listed the kinds things a lay person could do, the tools necessary for them, and links in the notes to other resources and actual tutorials, I think would be super helpful in giving people a start in learning how to repair and maintain their own stuff.

Just need to sort out the sound quality in the software, but that doesn't hurry. I love you guys and thanks for educating us. Man I keep waiting for your vids and shorts Andy my Bro♥️,specially the ones related to Desktops, only desktops id say,now I watch all your vids,I swear I wait for your vids more than anyone man
At 2:24 you missed the chance to do a "not/never gonna give you up" followup
I did an upgrade to my 2011 21 inch iMAC, it runs great ventura.
Having flashback to when I worked in a tech shop that did Mac repairs... working with the screen was terrifying. We did have the foam triangles to secure the base, though.
Good job on prolonging the classic Intel iMac, please make more, oh and nice VW car :D
I love watching your RUclips videos haha. I genuinely enjoy doing and watching these kinds of tear downs and upgrading the hardware.
I actually have one from my Dad and I've been debating how to fix these machines. It's a great computer with a slow HDD but I've always been scared on how to do this. Thank you for a great video guide.
i did that job with that very same imac model and even buying new adhesive the screen felt to the table
This is the exact model I have on the workbench at work. SSD and OpenCore with Sonoma. Works absolutely fine and it's the perfect machine to perform any kind of software tests for some of our customers that use Macs.
However, don't buy one used. People are absolutely nuts when asking money for them, even with the crappy original hard drives.
I’ve been able to find insane deals on them used though.
@@SalemTechsperts Market differences, I'd say. Outside of the US, especially where I'm at (Portugal), it's quite a pickle to find a good deal on one.
If you can though, they are great machines.

I have a 2014 BTO 21.5" i7 iMac......did the SSD upgrade.....I use it as a "head Unit" for Video/Music streaming on my home theater/audio system....it perfect for that.
funny how they have a computer shop inside of subway
Holy, the Halo Reach respawn tick sound. That gave me a nostalgia trip
I'm beginning to feel like this computer repair business is just a front for Andy to launch his standup career. I don't think I laugh as much when I'm watching specials of most comics.
My man used the Halo count down sound... love to the goat

Pirate Software's discord server and this channel are two of my favorite places to learn stuff
Great video! I did something similar with my 2012 Mac Mini. Opened up, cleaned it, then swapped out the old HDD to an SSD and swapped out the memory from 8gb to 16 and it runs awesome! Still great for basic stuff like Office programs and web browsing. Totally worth the $120 bucks in parts!
nice vid! I love my 2012 imac, i7 32gig ram and 1tb ssd. use it everyday while I work to listen to music and watch shows. but I did not go the legacy mac route and just installed Linux Mint. hell it even handles steam game streaming from my gaming
computer when I have time between meetings lol.
But it looks like it doesn't matter too much for

4:35 Geez man, don't jumpscare me like that 😭😂
A good idea would be to start up the imac after you connect the screen but before you stick the screen on the frame. (you can hold it externally in place with some tape temporarily).
This way you can check that everything is working. If you have made a mistake and you need to re-open the imac, you will have to carry out again the same process of buying new adhesive, cleaning the old one etc.

been thinking about getting one of these. This helps a lot, thanks!
Love seeing you clean everything up before you started working on it 💯 And your videos are evolving into there final form 🤟😎

I thought these were magnetic retention for the screen. I have a late 2009 version that still works. Can't upgrade the os nor Chrome or Firefox. I did install 16gb ram, but I think mine has a 3.5HDD and it needs a special carriage and cooling to install SSD.
i wish i had a Subway near me that has a tech store inside

Cinema Display probably the power supply.
I really miss playing Diablo 2 on my Mac Mini.

this is the best channel that i´ve discovered in my entire life, thank you both for your honest work !!
Hah thank you for finding me!
Did this swap and a Ubuntu install on my 4k model and it runs so smooth now. I use it as a home chore tracker and jukebox.
I hate the adhesive on these so much when I upgraded it, I didn't bother. I just used clear duct tape, and taped it together. Can barely even tell it's tapped on. Makes getting inside much easier.

can u make a video on what to look for while buying used pc components
ok dude, thanks a lot with this video, i have 27 inch 2012 imac with i5 and ddr 3 8gb memory.. i surely will upgrade this thing because the screen is so good for editing photos.
on my way upgrading my imac rn.

There are also four cables to the video panel instead of two.
cada vez me gusta mas este canal (love from Uruguay)
I'm still here binging. I have to pee, but that can wait. You give good feelings. You deserve support for what you give so generously.

A wonderful service to the community. Thank you.
i am still rocking a 2017 macbook and plan to send it out to have it upgraded to the max amount of ram which i think is 32gigs and also add an nvme ssd slot so i can upgrade from the 250gig soldered ssd
Hey, I just found this channel a little while ago and I’ve already seen a few videos.
Fab. Never had Mac, but recently went mad about Linux. I already mentioned that I fixed a broken hinge on my old ex-Vista Asus laptop and installed a 32bit xfce distro. Just yesterday I found out that little old boi can also take 64bit, so upgraded the system to 64 bit xfce, and also gave it a brand new ssd sata drive, a whole 1tb from the original 200gb HDD, also got a new RAM, and cleaned the debris from inside, then reapplying a thermal paste. Just need to sort out the sound quality in the software, but that doesn't hurry. I love you guys and thanks for educating us. I learned something from you recently which helped me to give a new life to my old new Wilma boi :)
Love your videos ...
I hope i could be more consistent on my part

First time watching your full video. I usually watch your shorts. I do have to say your shorts are more entertainng. Your full video is more informative. Keep up the good work.
I demand the section of the portion of the video where you put on the adhesive strips!
7:47 I HAD THIS IN FULL BLAST IN THE CAR😭😭😭 MY DAD IS IN THE CAR😭😭😭
Denatured (ethyl) Alcohol will help with that adhesive removal. It's better/cheaper than Isopropyl.
I would not close up the screen against the new adhesive and the metal frame until I had seen it working - just in case one of the plugs was not set correctly.
brotherhood is proud of you two
for a first timer doing this maybe good idea to turn it on once you plug the cables for the screen back in before you seal it back up🤔🤔? could save having to deal with resealing again if something was off etc
For sure
