    Good insight! The biggest issue I've found with computer repair shops at least in my area is that most of the owners have massive, overinflated egos, especially the ones that do phone and tablet repairs as well as normal PC stuff. Between trying to overcharge unsuspecting consumers and the overinflated egos it is making more people go to big box stores like Geek Squad or Microcenter from my experience. There is only a couple decent and down to earth shops left in my area and I live in a large city in the US so if its the trend here I imagine its similar in other places.

    • @SalemTechsperts
      @SalemTechsperts  6 месяцев назад +111

      I'm so glad you mentioned this, and I'm going to bless you with a completely relevant part of the script I left out because I was crunching to make this video...
      "Because I may sarcastically say I'm
      TGTTEL
      But I'm nowhere near as technically skilled as some other people.
      But those other people probably can't sit down with 90 year old Barbara and walk her through resetting her AOL password.
      And that's what sets me apart.
      I attribute my success directly to my ability to communicate technical problems in terms that the average person can understand,
      Without making them feel belittled or dumb.
      Because it doesn't matter if you can assemble an Alienware blindfolded and recite every MacBook Pro model number from 1969,
      If you don't know how to talk to people, your business will be short lived.
      Because at the end of the day, your job is to help people.
      And if you don't want to help people, and are JUST in it for the money,
      Go fuck yourself.
      Because yes, you can make fast money by being a terrible tech and screwing people over, but those people will never come back, and you will forever be known as a piece of shit."

    • @Big_Flubba
      @Big_Flubba 6 месяцев назад +4

      @SalemTechsperts I agree. You have to have that balance. That is what sets you apart. I have met mechanics and others who know what they are doing and do a good job, but could not talk to a person in the slightest. I have also met others who could talk my ear off but could not turn a bolt. Both of them I despise going to. If you can only do one, but not the other then you need someone who can do the other part for you. If not, you'll not be successful as a business.

      Before, I didn't even have a wall. I just had a 3 foot high partition separating Subway from me. The idea was to have customers grab some food while I fixed their phone, and they could even watch me do it. It worked out wonderfully for a few years until it started becoming an issue with being able to get work done while being easily accessible for people to start convo's etc. So we built the wall and it's been crazy since.

    Just come across your videos, they resonate so much! Someone who has a realistic view and description of repair shop life. Talking phones, using quality parts cost money , there's a reason genuine parts cost more as often anything aftermarket or 'self assembled' even refurbished just is not good. I could ramble forever, we repair computers, phones, tablets, gaming consoles and random shit. Do the customers want to pay? Or wait for things? Nope. We have a HUGE amount of part stock. Still can barely keep 50% of people happy, who just want the best price and will go get crap elsewhere cheaper then come here so we can fix it up properly and then we are apparently meant to take pity on them cause they spent bad money elsewhere. This industry is a joke i have no idea why I'm still here after 20 years lol

    as a fellow pc builder and repair technician who runs a private pc business in Seattle, i can say with certainty, have your workshop at your home, a separate office is just not worth it in this industry, even though Seattle has a lot of gamers and people who use their pc, things get rough unless you have a partnership with a separate entity, i work with the local school district to supply and repair their pcs, to which they have a lot of, and then for non-partnered jobs there is always the risk of something frying itself after sending it to the client, I've been lucky enough to never have something die after being sent to the client, but recently my brand new RTX 4080 fried itself on my personal pc so now i have to use my old 1050ti until i can get a new RTX, for anyone who does not have another stable income, i don't recommend this industry because i only set up shop in Seattle because there are no other widely available and or reliable pc shops in the Seattle area. If you are going to start a pc business, don't, "with a small pc business in a dying market with larger entities, there will always be others to compete with you" -the third greatest technician that's ever lived (me)

    • @SalemTechsperts
      @SalemTechsperts  6 месяцев назад +6

      You're absolutely spot-on to "have your workshop at your home". Unfortunately, the average home price here is nearly 1 million dollars, so I have no home to have a workshop in, and my apartment is too small to do any work. I will never realistically be able to own a home in this area. The goal is to just save up enough money to gtfo of here, which is incredibly sad, as I love this area, but it's simply not meant for small businesses.

    For the phone repairs you can always get a blacklisted phone that works and just swap the board from the one with a broken screen. .. phone repair guru did that with a z-flip repair as it was like half the cost of just a screen to just buy a blacklisted one n swap the board into that one

    • @SalemTechsperts
      @SalemTechsperts  6 месяцев назад +27

      I know, I used to do this frequently with Samsung phones, especially their budget models where the screen cost more than the entire phone did on eBay. The problem is, you're introducing too many variables and now are going to have to be responsible for them. What if the blacklisted one has a bad small component attached to the frame that takes like 3 hours to remove? It's just so much bullshit for such little money.

    Recently I was curious to see if anyone had done videos on tutorials or repairs on Toshiba Qosmio laptops - which is how I saw my first video of yours. A few years back my 2013 Toshiba Qosmio almost had it (due to a bad BIOS flash caused by a botched Windows Update and horribly-timed blackout combo... yay), and I sent it for repairs at a local repairshop (here, in Quito Ecuador where I know getting pc components is very tricky and expensive). He did the job so well that my laptop not only lived through that, but it's been working flawlessly for two years and counting (he estimated 1 year).
    At the time, he told me a bit about the repair process. But after looking at your videos I now know for sure that it must've been quite the ordeal getting it fixed so fast and charging so little too. Now have massive respect for you and anyone who works in this industry (I'll pay him a visit soon to get my laptop some needed maintenance... and to apologize 😅). Congratulations on 1M subscribers - keep at it!

    for the screen, i let customers buy it for me, i give them reliable several links where i buy them, i also disclose that sometime they might get lucky and get the defective ones.
    if the screen is defective i let them handle the RMA and those stuff, i just put it again for free for the 2nd time after they RMA their screen.
    i also record the video so they can RMA stuff quickly as possible.

    • @SalemTechsperts
      @SalemTechsperts  6 месяцев назад +1

      "i just put it again for free for the 2nd time" - this is the problem, not the RMA system (which is super easy with my supplier). You're dropping everything to do a job 2, 3, even 4 times to make a slim profit. It's not sustainable.

    • @shiro214okane
      @shiro214okane 6 месяцев назад

      @@SalemTechsperts for you it doesn't make sense since you've got too many orders (local and mail) + youtube. and your place cost of living.
      for me its the RMA since, it will take long 2 to 3 weeks before replacement and i'm placed not into a main city. the reason i pass it to customers don't want to deal with that + them complaining why it takes long, that kept interrupting me.
      screen replacement is 15 to 30 min job, if i know its easier to transfer components than screen, i let them order with frame already attached to the new screen and i just transfer components. most of the time, leaving it curing the glue.
      i do ask for the screen if the touch is still working and only have green lines, especially if its samsung S series or apple screen. if they give it to me, free money for me, i just refurbish and sell it to main city or keep it for a while. if they wants to keep it, its fine.
      if i'm too busy i do reject job orders and refer them to somewhere, else i'll tell them to wait patiently.
      the one that actually keeps me is board repair problems that i haven't encountered or new to me with no known solution online in chinese and local forums. specially laptops and GPUs.
      also political campaigns printouts during campaign season. zombie mode in 2 to 3 months.
