    I think there's also the mentality of some customers that think all repair shops have spare parts lying around and ready to be installed, that all these spares are interchangable between brands and the technician is actually an immortal being that feed on gooch and have magic eyes that can detect the problem from just a glance

      Some parts are but it is rare aside from the usual things like ram, storage, wifi cards, and lastly display panels as those get harvested whenever there is an opportunity. The other part that can be worth some good money is mxm cards depending on the model and the brand especially as upgrades for older laptops as well iMacs.

    I prefer business customers. They understand why I charge what I do. Not only do home users not understand why I am so expensive but they also expect me to fix whatever is wrong for the next 10 years because they spent $160 on labor three years ago. "You replaced my hard drive a year ago and now my display doesn't work. Why do I have to pay again?" For the same reason you pay for a oil change in your car every so often.

      These clowns buy a Litre of oil and expect ME to let all the other customers wait, whilst I check their oil levels, fill it up, check tire preessures and refill washer fluid, WHICH ISNT MY JOB. PTM7950 off of LTT store. Its manufactured by honeywell for industrial purposes, but I guess someone figured it was good for laptops too. Its different than paste but seems to be the best choice for laptops. It also seems to have a higher lifespan than thermal paste. PTM also gets better over time as you throw more cooling and heating cycles at it

    • @kevinoneill2170
      @kevinoneill2170 2 месяца назад

      Mr NJB! I really enjoy and appreciate the work you do. For your Alienware laptop thermal solution, I'd recommend using Honeywell PTM 7950, a thermally conductive phase change material. PTM 7950 comes in a thin sheet as opposed to a paste in a tube. Its biggest selling point is its endurance to many heating and cooling cycles since it is designed for industrial applications so it should likely outlast other products and not need to be replaced as soon. Salem Techsperts uses it frequently for CPU and GPU laptop cooling and have several shorts and long form videos where they use it on Alienware laptops. As PTM 7950 became popular in the last few years, it was difficult to find and the biggest concern was buying it from shady online retailers and sellers who were potentially selling counterfeit Honeywell PTM 7950. Linus Tech Tips (another popular channel) sells genuine Honeywell PTM 7950 on their website (and has videos on using it properly), and Salem Techsperts has affiliate links to buy Honeywell PTM 7950 in their Amazon store, which you can find links to on their main page and linktree, if you’d rather purchase it on Amazon since Linus Tech Tips only ships from Canada. Honeywell PTM 7950 can be a little fragile when handling it at room temperature (because it can tear easily) so many users recommend putting it in the refrigerator or freezer to harden it up a little before handling it, cutting it to size, and applying it. If you’d really want to use paste, Honeywell makes two paste versions PTM 7950-SP (good) and 7958-SP (better). Kingpin Cooling’s KPx thermal paste is a little expensive but also very good. As you may already know iFixit has a lot of great tutorials on their website and youtube for doing DIY work on laptops and other electronics. Also, Parts-People works exclusively on Dell laptops and has many guides on working on Alienware laptops on their website and youtube channel.

      I personally use Corsair thermal paste but make sure you look up if your laptop uses a liquid metal instead, using normal thermal paste will destroy your laptop

    • @kevinoneill2170
      @kevinoneill2170 2 месяца назад

As PTM 7950 became popular in the last few years, it was difficult to find and the biggest concern was buying it from shady retailers who were potentially selling fake Honeywell PTM 7950. Linus Tech Tips (another popular channel) sells genuine Honeywell PTM 7950 (and has videos on using it properly), and Salem Techsperts has links for Honeywell PTM 7950 in their Amazonian store, which you can find links to on their main page, if you’d rather purchase it on the Bezos site since Linus Tech Tips only ships from Canada. I’ve had to rewrite and repost this comment multiple times because youtube keeps deleting it for some reason. Annoying.

    I've been around stripped fasteners for quite some time now working on 40+ year old equipment in the military. Another go to solution for slightly stripped fasteners is to use a piece of your glove between the screwdriver and fastener. The correct sized tool and a bit of rubber makes all the difference 😉

    Another tactic for stripped screws (depending on the severity) is putting some permatex valve grinding compound (pink tube) on the end of your bit before applying pressure and unscrewing. A lot of the things I work on use hex or allen head, and if they start to strip, sometimes using a similar sized torx bit can do the trick too. My last resort is taking a dremel to it and turning it into a flat head or drilling it out. Hope some of that helps; thanks for the hours of entertainment.

    For stripped screws, I like to use a slightly sharp flat head and tap the edge of the screw counter-clockwise. The screw heads are usually mallable where the flat head start chisselling into the edge and forcing the screw to rotate. I tap the flat head screw driver while it is making contact on the screw. It's a fine art of hard taps enough to cause the screw to rotate and soft enough that you don't send the flat head into the motherboard. Just an FYI :)

    Its the same when it comes to auto repair shops. Like you stated, one of the most annoying is customers going back to school (especially for me and my coworkers on college students vehicles). The amount of waiting till the last minute to get their vehicles serviced before they have to either make the trip back to their respected universities or colleges does boggle the mind, heck me and the other techs in my position always make the MPI as simple and easy to digest for them for service that can wait till later on to get done and others that need to be handled very soon so it keeps them and others safe.

    • @SalemTechsperts

      Yeah some kids just don't care about stuff that isn't theirs. I work in the tech department at a school district. A couple of years ago, we had an interesting trend with Chromebook damage. Some kid thought it would be cool to pick off the lock screen key from their Chromebook. The first few times, I didn't think much of it, but I started seeing the same key missing across multiple classrooms over the next several weeks. I guess the kid started telling his friends and classmates to do the same across multiple devices.
      At the time, the Chromebooks weren't checked out to any student so it was impossible to say who started it.

We definitely felt the rush being in between WPI and Clark University. It's definitely difficult to keep up sometimes during September, especially considering the high number of students that use MacBooks. They're customers that want the cheapest repairs on the most expensive devices.
