Hi Everyone, a few subscribers let me know that the Pony hooks are actually aluminum.😊🧶

    • @belantww
      @belantww 2 года назад +1

The first set of hooks I ever bought were Pony hooks. They're more popular overseas than in the states. I measured them once with a hook gauge and found that the sizes weren't correct. I would have been interested in seeing how many of these hooks measured true to the given size. I did enjoy your video. Got to see some hooks that I'd never seen before.

You also didn't seem to notice that the Pony hooks are also in-line hooks, not tapered. As for them being aluminum... wow, they really look plastic! I did hear a "clink" when you gathered them up together and I thought that was odd, LOL! Now I know why! Thanks for the correction!

For all those that use "stamped on" hook numbers....just put clear nail polish over top and it stays on just fine. I also take fine steel wool and give the hooks a quick wipe and then wipe with rubbing alcohol before using. This will help any yarn from catching!

I use Clover Soft Touch, which are slicker than the Amour. The Tulip Etimos are very similar to both the Amour & Soft Touch. Furls, which I spent a fortune on, are too inline for me & slows me down. I have a set of Yarn Mania Aiyana interchangeable s that light up - slick and great for travel. I do keep a few less expensive sets that aren't as slick for certain yarns, such as shiny bamboo. Btw- the tulip sticker has never frayed or come off. I like the larger print too. Nice review. Hooks are important 😊 Such an important video review, thank you!

Thank you, Ronda. I haven't tried Clover Soft Touch. I'm going to add those to my list for the next shopping spree (another excuse to shop more😳😂). I've heard so many great things about Furls...but I'm like you with inline...I'm going to get one to try out for the next round for thoroughness sake. I haven't seen the interchangeable light up hooks you mentioned...I'll look them up. You're the second person who said the Tulip sticker does not come off. I'm glad to hear that.

No problem with the sticker coming off on my tulips. I’ve been using them for two or three years and love them.
I have few of the red tulips, and a few of the pink tulips. I think they are all pretty much the same, just different colors. Fine that these are the hooks I grab most of the time. I like them even better than my wonderful Clover amor.

  • @amydavis4945

I absolutely LOVE my Pryms ever since I discovered them. When I first tried one, I really didn't think I would ever like a "plastic" hook, but like you... the instant I tried it, I was "sold". I then bought 2 full sets of the smaller hooks, and a set of their larger hooks. They are great for big bobbles/popcorn stitches, tunisian entralac crochet, and everything in between (because the shaft is so long). The ONLY two things I don't like is that my old eyes have a hard time reading the stamped size on the handle (of course by now I have the colors memorized tho), and for whatever reason, Prym does NOT make a 5.5mm - which I use a lot. But because of that (no 5.5mm) I discovered that Hobby Lobby has a crochet hook that is essentially exactly the same as the Prym hooks (plastic, in-line, long shaft, same grip) for MUCH cheaper and they DO have a 5.5mm. I still use my Prym for everything - except when I need a 5.5mm.

I am a Clover Armour Girl. I always say this so...be careful with metal hooks if like my kids and myself you are allergic to Nickel. I loved the feel of my first set from a military family, unfortunately they were coated with Nickel and my fingers would go numb from them. I started crochet 50 years ago with Boye hooks, switched to Susan Bates and am back with Boye w/the ergonomic handle due to arthritis. I've also used Bernat hooks made in England (they are taper hook).

    Hi Frannie,
I have the Pink Tulip Etimo hooks (the full set sizes 0.9mm -6.5mm) and I absolutely love them. I got the pink hooks because pink is my favorite color. I have a few clover and a few furls hooks and I like them as well. I learned on Boye hooks.
I took a long break from crochet while serving in the Navy and picked it back up about 4 years ago. The Pink Etimo hooks were a treat to myself after my second knee surgery from an injury while I was in the Navy and fourth surgery after I retired. I considered the PRYM hooks but I prefer aluminum hooks. After this review I may pick up a few at Michael's to try.

Very in depth about some of the common hook options that pop up on Amazon.
Prym hooks are shaped very much like the cheaper, non metal Furls hooks I noticed. Just more affordable than one, so that's definitely a great way to see if you'd like to try a Furls shaped hook when there's no Furls sales going on. Love my Furls, don't get me wrong, but it is an expensive investment if you don't know if you'd like the shape or if it would work with the biomechanics of your hands.

@@FranniesHair They do take a bit to get used to. Sandy from Crochet Eh Canada recommended rolling the hook with the fingers rather than holding it firm and using the wrist. They're a bit longer than the Odyssey and Candy Shop hooks.

I make a lot of caps, for chemo patients, the homeless, and others. I have a number of sets, including the PRYM, Clover, Susan Bates, Knitter's Pride, KiwiVine, and my favorite is the PRYM because it allows me to crochet the fastest and it works great with lots of yarn types. I also like a less expensive set, Genround Lighted Crochet Hooks, but found a similar set, LOVE&WEAVING Lighted Crochet Hooks, to be very hard to use because the yarn kept getting stuck on the plastic connector to the handle. Another lighted set, Cornerstone Lite, works well but I had problems trying to replace the batteries. I still use the hooks, on the ones where the batteries died, and simply treat them like non-lighted hooks.

I am a knife hooker. I used the hooks from Hobbii - and was just trying 1 Clover Amour hook. And now I cannot go back ... so I order with every yarn order from Hobbii another Clover. In school (looong time ago) we only had PRYM - everybody had PRYM, but only the metall without any soft grip. I do not use PRYM for smaller size, but I use beginning from 6 or 7 the PRYM - mostly for "harder" projects - a bag or a basket. Then the lenght and the grip helps me a lot and I can crochet much more longer.

The Pryms are my absolute favorite aside from my Clovers. They are especially great when working with plush or larger wool type yarns.
The Tulips are overpriced in my opinion. They’re no different than the Clovers for me and the sticker does in deed wear off. I ended up having to use painters tape and permanent marker to mark mine.
The pink ones are more expensive because they were a special edition made to raise money and awareness for breast cancer (why they’re pink) and now they’re more expensive because they’re a collectible now since Tulip only made so many of them. Thank you for your review.

That was very interesting, Frannie, I appreciate the initial impressions and look forward to the more in-depth reviews. As I watched, I was working on a simple bedspread in Drops Safran using a Furls Candy Shop hook. I want to switch to my Clover though, which are my favourite hooks so far, but the same size hook does not give me the same gauge, so I guess I will either go up half a size or stick with the Furls. The automotive paint used to finish these hooks is gorgeous, but produces that same squeak that plastic hooks do, and with squeak comes drag, so it is slowing me down more than I would like. But it is a shorter hook too, and comfortable to hold - I use the pencil grip. Safran is cotton, so I may find this hook easier to use with wool or acrylic. This is my first run with this hook - I hope i like it because i bought 5 different sizes in the Candy Shop when there was a sale.

    • @glaiveofmidnight2145
      @glaiveofmidnight2145 3 года назад

Hey, I have Furls' resin hooks. Whenever they squeak, I give them a gentle wipe down with a cotton cloth or T-Shirt and it takes that away. Maybe give that a try with your Candy Shops? If a dry one doesn't work, try a damp cloth. I think it's the fingerprint oil that causes that squeak sometimes on them. Hopefully that solves your problem or at least lessens the effect.

I've decided on Prym. Wish me luck! :)
A little advice: it would make sense to make this video and the flash reviews of every single hooks one playlist - then it's easier to find them.
Maybe even go a step further and make playlist in which you have all hooks review - many people are looking for stuff related to hooks.

First of all: thank you for telling me what a Clover hook should look like. It is clear I got a fake from Amazon, and I just started a return.
Second: I find the shape of the Prym lovely, but I get a squeak when working with acrylic (my main yarn). Is there a treat the hook to avoid the squeak? Oil it?
Third: the Tulip have a lovely slip, but the thumb redt I find hurts my thumb after a while. Shame because I really like them.

I'm glad you are returning the fake! I can't stand these companies that try to take advantage of people. I don't know of a treatment for the squeak. I'd be afraid that anything I put on the hook might damage my yarn. It's interesting that Tulips hurt your thumb...it just goes to show that hooks affect us all differently. Thank you so much for watching!💕

@@FranniesHair Yes, I can't understand why my thumb feels sore. I think my thumb may be too close to the shaft.
The Prym seem to fit my large hands better. But I use a lot of acrylic (I crochet for charity mostly).
I've subscribed. Thanks for your kind reply 😊❤️

In-line hooks are the same circumference from end to end (without a grip) so a 5.5 mm hook is 5,5 mm all the way through where your stitches go. In line helps beginners with a consistent stitch size. Once you are proficient in crochet you may prefer the tapered throat, so you should try everything. Clover hooks are way over priced and far too short for my liking but everyone's hands are different. The pony in line were aluminum, these are plastic? I notice when you use in line you don't turn your hook as far as I do, which probably makes you much faster too. I tend to be a tight crocheter. I can use either in line or tapered hooks but because I work tightly, I stick with inline. Bates are actually a good quality, but like you, I prefer a pointer head even though some say it makes the yarn split. I was raised on untwisted worsted (like red heart rainbow) so splitting hasn't bothered me so far. I think some bamboo yarn might bug me tho, and I love bamboo yarn! I like tulip hooks but I really don't think any crochet hook warrants the price. A hook needs to be light, size accurate, and have an ultra fine finish (& a point for us). You can't totally cheap out because you wind up with a heavy, pitted hook. But Clover and Tulip...complete greed.

You certainly know your hooks! And the pony hooks are aluminum. I mistakenly thought they were plastic...I was corrected many times😂. That's the great thing about this community...always willing to share knowledge and support each other.🧶💕

I know someone who used the tulips for 4 years & new any wearing I guess it’s like a heat sticker type thing so it’s melted onto the hook! I haven’t had issues with mine yet & I haven’t seen anyone have wearing!

The Ctcwhs set, the metal hook doesn't extend through the plastic handles so the hook came out.

I found with the cheaper hooks to rub it with a micro fiber cloth all over the hook and shaft to get that weird coating off and it will slide easier. you have to rub until you feel it smoothen, like a couple minutes. My tulip etimo I use everyday all day never had the size rub off in a knife holder. Still my favorite!!

My favorite set you showed were the first set! I love the long handles on them and they go fairly smooth for me (I did have to use a permanent marker to rewrite the hook size on the opposite side of the handle). I want to try that plastic inline set you liked. Did they squeak ? But i have to say Furls are my absolute favorite. I know they are so expensive but the really make a difference in the speed and ease of my crochet. Also i can crochet a lot longer without hand pain. It’s always fun to watch these videos, because everyone has different preferences. It’s nice that there are so many different options for crocheters

@@FranniesHair I use mostly the streamline swirl hooks from furls because they are gorgeous. I will say that for the smaller hook sizes be careful! I have broken the head on two 4 mm hooks doing amigurumi (furls replaced both) That’s why I have been looking at other hooks to use for those tight projects. But overall the furls are very good hooks.

I do not use metal hooks, just weird like that. The closest thing to a set I have is a bunch of Boye Balene and Balene II, love them! Not sure they make them anymore.
I also use a huge mix of wooden hooks.
