This is how you do seperation of church and state right: Article 20 of the japanese constitution "Freedom of religion is guaranteed to all. No religious organization shall receive any privileges from the State, nor exercise any political authority. No person shall be compelled to take part in any religious act, celebration, rite or practice. The State and its organs shall refrain from religious education or any other religious activity. "
There are lines that sound very much like these in the american constitution as well. They just need to be better enforced regarding elected officials who often seem oblivious the american constitution is not entirely composed of the second amendment.
@@huffpappy To an extent. Parts of the japanese constitution were pretty much just dictated by the US, especially the parts about the position of the emperor.
Freedom from religion is doing it right. That's what separation means. Stop telling everyone how to live. What you have in the US is a Christian Taliban.

I grew up an atheist and woman of color in East Tennessee. Being non-white and omitting "under God" whenever my class was forced to recite the Pledge of Allegiance felt like subversive acts in the heart of the Bible Belt, and I'd never felt so powerful as when I was true to myself. I still feel this way in my 30s, being an LGBT woman of color and unapologetic atheist in a country whose power-hungry leader cuddles up to Christian theocrats and white nationalists who would have people like me silenced and subjugated if given the chance.
@David Allred she brought it up 3 times "woman of color" is saying she not white. That is the whole point I was making, saying you're a poc is just stating you're not white. So what you gonna nitpick about nitpicking next, muppet.
@David Allred normally I wouldn't make a second reply but just to clarify "woc" used twice "being non white" used once. 4 da Allreds at the back that makes 3 times it was brought up. "you could just say what you are" was in my original post, that is why I did not moan about her saying she is a woman or that she is atheist. If I say "I'm not Christian" and you respond "oh are you atheist?" and I say " I just told you what I am, I'm not christian". You see how unhelpful the terminology is? I'm just going to assume the op is Korean. Hope this clears up what I'm getting at for all you special free thinkers. Two weeks later: So what if she is Korean!? Calling the asinine response in advance.
I hope these fundamentalist nutbags don't succeed dragging the USA further into Christian Taliban country. I'm not American yet I have American friends who are shocked (in a good way) that no one cares if you don't go to church here. They ask "So what do you do on Sunday?"
Thank you!! I was a devout “Christian” for over two decades, until one day I began to question what was being peddled as truth. Just yesterday, I was sharing with my son how restless I felt regarding all that’s happened and how I think that it’s all about power and control. Today, he shared this with me. I now have clarity on all of the things I questioned, and believe I made the right decision when I turned my back on organized religion. Again, thank you!
They have also grown so accustomed to defend the ridiculous, that they no longer even see how mad it is to declare "King James Edition is the only true version of god's word"... It is not even a GOOD translation, too politically motivated, too "drawn by committee"... and yet it gets all this praise for the presumably nice language and flowery prose... yech. Still a mostly mumbled "chinese whispers" translation of a translation of a translation. Yet they will stand on that hill and DIE on that hill. As without all the things they started to defend they no longer have their very identity. And that is a scary thought... scary enough that it kept millions of atheists from admitting they had stopped believing a long time ago and forcing themselves to "fake it until they make it" in a perserve secret Pascal's wager of their own doing...
@RDE Lutherie Yes and early Christians were called atheists by the Romans before the Romans adopted that cult as their state religion. The ancient Romans felt it was necessary that the Christians make the necessary sacrifices to the old Roman gods and since the Christians denied the old Roman gods and refused to sacrifice to them, the Christians were called atheists. Today, Christians are still atheists to all other gods, we just add theirs to our disbelief as well.

Well, the deficit is pretty meaningless. Imagine a contractor you want to build you a house said the inches deficit is too high. But better, if churchs paid taxes it'd wipe them out.
Romans 13:1-7 1 Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. 2 So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. 3 For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. 4 The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. 5 So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience. 6 Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.

Bob Smith No, atheism is just a non belief in a god. Which I’m sure you are clearly aware off since you claim you used to be an atheist. And why do you feel the need to trigger anyone? As an atheist, I just want to believe in what is demonstrably true. Not just claims. Especially in this age of social media.
Recently NBA player Jonathan Isaac decided to stand for the U.S. anthem instead of kneeling like most other NBA players. So many conservatives rushed to praise him for being "christ-like". What does standing or kneeling for the U.S. anthem have anything to do with religion? So many Christians think that America is special or favored by God or that America is inherently Christian. It is just ironic so many of them use the constitution to justify awful things but then choose to ignore the very first amendment. Ignorance runs deep in this nation.
@1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV Kneeling is in no way submitting. Kneeling is how they show respect to the victims of police brutality, and is no way submission to anything. And I don't have any problem with anyone standing or kneeling, I think the whole situation is blown way out of proportion. What I take issue with are people using Christianity to justify standing for the flag, which makes no sense since the U.S. =/= Jesus
@1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV It just perpetuation of conspiracy theories. Are there some members of BLM that are horrible people? You bet. But with every group there are horrible members. The right likes to pass of the nutcases in their groups as "extremes", but then when BLM inevitably has a few nut cases its suddenly a terrorist group? I just don't buy it. You have to realize there are crazy people on each side of the aisle. I'm not pro-gun at all and heavily disagree with the NRA, but I don't think they are a terrorist group. You can disagree with a movements ideas without having to falsely label them as terrorists.
I think the conservatives called Jonathan Isaac "christ-like" because he took a controversial act in support of conservative ideals/ positions. While the conservative party seems to be the practical and ideological polar opposite of the things christ (apparently) taught, promoted and did, they nevertheless use their unique ability to ignore reality and delude themselves into believing that if christ were around today, he'd be all about pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and establishing money-lenders in the temples, etc... But I digress... Back on topic; when someone acts in the interests of the conservative party, the conservatives will hail them as being 'Christ-like,' even if these actions are directly in opposition to what the bible claims were christ's own actions.
Seth, I bought your book and await for its inevitable release with your signature. I have no deconversion story, was never particularly religious, nor did I grow up in a religious household. The basic problem is, from an "evangelical" stand point, having privilege *is* their right, and not being allowed to either punish others, or force them to agree, is denial of rights. Their whole theme is, after all, "saving souls", and, "making the world god's world". But, otherwise, yeah, they do not get to have those rights, at everyone elses expense.

Almost every Republican in Dirty Donny’s administration, do, say and behave exactly the opposite of how Jesus told them to live. The constitution means nothing to them, unless they can use it to their advantage. Your equality threatens my privilege. That is absolutely what’s going on with these people. How insecure and hateful do you have to be, to want your fellow human beings to be less fortunate than you are.
This should be shown to congregations in every church, in every Christian institution while the ministers and priests in each remain gagged until it has concluded. Seeds need to be planted in stubborn closed minds and although counter-information will never get everyone to rethink, it will get some, those more able to comprehend truth and embrace reality.
I am a Christian yet I totally agree that church and state should be separate. My relationship is with God not the country. God has never requested that we legislate our way into his grace. Abortion although permitted by law is a personal decision made by each person. As a Christian I have to forgive any woman or man who sin’s and repents. God is not dead to me so I don’t need to take up his job and judge others.
I've been a life-long atheist, but was raised Jewish. I considered myself a Jewish Atheist for years, because I still participated in family activities like celebrating Passover, and so forth (even though I would actively criticize a lot of stuff that I knew wasn't true in the Seder). My whole life, even when I identified as a Jew (but also when I did not), I felt like so many people did not consider me a person who ought to have rights in this country. Even when there was lip-service to judaism, it seemed like an afterthought. This was not universal, as I had made friends all over the place with various religious and cultural backgrounds, all of whom treated me like a real human being, not an inferior. But I still constantly see 'god-offs' being used to define who people ought to vote for in the next election, who's the best Christian, who's the best theist, etc. So thanks for this discussion. And btw, one thing that people often forget (that actually was eventually acknowledged by the US Congress) is that our constitution was greatly influenced by the constitution of the Iroquois confederation: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Law_of_Peace
As a Republican Atheist I agree that this country was certainly not founded as a Christian Nation. I learned this after doing some research on my own and discovering that the things in this country that have God included in them such as our national motto, currency, and pledge of allegiance only had God added to them in the last 80 years or so. Even the Declaration of Independence, while mentioning the right to practice religion freely, mentions nothing about God or even Christianity.
Yeah, we religiously changed our motto and money as a response to soviet Russia being an atheist state, and we wished to be their direct opposite in every way.
You can’t say something is “real”, and then claim it exhibits none of the properties of any other real objects, and can’t ever be examined or analyzed empirically. That’s pretty much a good definition of “not real”. --- PZ Myers
Exactly. Theologians like to claim that "God exists outside of time and space", but then continue to talk all about God's presence and his work here on earth (within our time & space)

Tripoli was engaged in piracy and the letter was an attempt to protect our ships from these attacks, but it did not work and Jefferson ended up having to send in the Marines, as is immortalized in the lines of the Marine corps hymn, "From the shores of Tripoli...."
I saw a quote the other day "When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression" this is why they scream about the need for more religious rights.
Every reference to a god from the beginning of recorded history is man made. The place to begin the god question is in the present moment. So let's begin with the question, Do you see a Biblical Hebrew god with three personalities hiding in his magic kingdom in the clouds? I don't. Thank You.
The notion of the trinity was created by council later. I believe the reason was political - to appease their Roman rulers. Religious Romans in those times by and large believed in polytheistic religions (their gods even included man-gods, animal gods, and demigods I believe - but please check, I'm not 100% certain).
@@steveelim Odd, so did the Hebrews, in the further past (with one supposed overgod, who some think is a combination of two Mesopotamian gods, anyway...)
If God cares about the human race, why the Bible? It was written over 2000 years ago! No updates since then? God doesn't have any comment on humanity's progress; traveling to the Moon, inventing nuclear weapons, fiddling around with genetic material??? That's his wheelhouse! He's not upset that the human race is getting uppity? No further communications from the man upstairs in light of changing conditions on the ground? Of course not. Because there is no sentience to send us messages. You want to find "God," look through a telescope. Look through a microscope. THERE'S YOUR GOD. Religion was just a botched first attempt at science.
The word "Our Creator" appears in the Tripoli Treaty from John Adams and in Jefferson's "Declaration of Independence" so it appears they were "god" believers in some sense but deny that the nation was founded on religion. However it makes no difference to me what they believed. I can see for myself there is no god. Instead, I see that I am a cluster of sub atomic particles which have briefly come together to form this body before breaking up once again to form something else.
I echo your sentiment. It's hard to understand just when it was that science became such a threat to so many Americans. I fondly remember as a kid the excitement and curiosity shared by so many regarding science when the U.S. put a man on the moon. It was all anyone could talk about. When school resumed in the fall, it seemed like everything revolved around it. Science was "cool." Now, many actually fear it, and seemingly prefer conspiracy theories. Then again, there are a lot of ignorant people who find anything difficult (physics, chemistry, biology, cosmology, mathematics) as taboo. It takes time and effort. These days that can be dangerous.
Mr. Andrews, you are absolutely brilliant in your commentary and your thoughtfulness. I'm so proud that a fellow "Okie" has done so much to bring knowledge, compassion and simple, human decency into our world. Thank you, Sir!
Not really related, only in the sense of christian attempts to change the historical narrative in their favor: I went to catholic school up until 8th grade. In 8th grade, the religion curriculum is about church history (a subject which, for the record, was discussed perhaps once the entire year). Out of mostly a sense of morbid curiosity, I read the textbook. Their section on the Inquisition was _laughable._ It implied that the worst thing the Inquisition ever did to anyone was excommunicate them. I suppose it's OK to just ignore all of the thousands of innocents who were gleefully murdered in horrific ways at the direction of the ironically named Pope Innocent? Just one of many examples of my religion teacher bending truth to fit the catholic narrative.

Our beloved Christopher Hitchens pointed out the historical irony that our founders while firmly rooted in secular humanism were just a little too early in time to benefit from Darwin’s research and the resulting intellectual bombshell. Imagine if they had been contemporaries.
If you had decent moral ethics, you would hate Christopher Hitchens so much that you would be thrilled that he died, and only feel bad that he had even a shred of dignity in his death. Luckily, that is what Hell is for. I imagine he would know the pain he helped cause others when he feels the burn of the same napalm that burned the Iraqi children he cheered on the deaths of. Also, America is an evil nation rooted in oppression, and the great Eranshar (Iran) will save humanity from slavery to the oligarchs that rule over the American empire, and then the great Ahura Mazda (God) will punish those oligarchs with an eternity in the house of lies (Hell), where the "founding fathers" are now, and shall remain for all time, for the crime of stealing the fruits of the labor of others, raping their slaves, and murdering the Mazda worshipping Native Americans, these atrocities being the real principles of the so-called enlightenment! And we, the Mazdakites, salute our Christian, Hindu, and Sikh comrades for their aid in sending the monstrous imperialist world order the "enlightenment" has spawned crashing down, and from the ashes of the old world, we will build heaven on earth- communism!

Uuuu... thats hard man I cant even imagine - half of my family was already atheist, and - well, im from Poland. In Europe beeing atheist isn't realy that big of the deal I want to give you advice however. First - wait. It's might be the best way for now. Wait until 18 years old. Its 3 years, but you can spend those years to realy prepare. 18 years old is moment where parents can't realy throw "its just a phase" at you - cuz you are an adult by that point. second - Make new friends - atheist one, from more secular places - like, those who would not give a fuck about your religion Third - start braking the ground. Start talking with parents about faith, and your relations with them. Not all parents are soo religious, that they will hate you for abandoning faith. Or i hope soo for you. I still had problems with relgious part of my family, but i had support from other places. Like my grandfather, who litearly called Church the "Mafia" XD It will be hard - realy fucking hard - but you will prevail :) *Take care*

What was world changing for me, was start a therapy with a psicholgist. It helped me to organize my thoughts and clear my head on who I really was and what my family wanted me to be and to separate the two. Every coming out is different and hard, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Seek help and I assure you there will be people willing to help you.
Cant you just let them go on their way....in a few years you will be free as your own individual. Sorry to interupt your question to Seth. Im a 60 year old Scotsman but I remember being 15. Beginning to grow and become angry at my family (not for religious reasons) is what happens. My advice is to TRY and let these frustrations pass by....like rain. Very soon you will be able to make your own life. Dont get involved in a fight that none of you will win. Hopefully you wont lose anyone....follow your own interests and just like it says on the cover of the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy - DON'T Panic....in nice friendly letters. I hope you have read that book. Take care and try not to stress out. It is not your job to fix the world - well, not yet anyway
I left my family when I was 19, because I found out how everything they had taught me was mostly used to control me. I practically built my dad's house and remodeled his apartment complexes all before I turned 18. Looking back they just took stuff from me, they were never really family, and they only ever had their hand out when dealing with me. If they are so "Christian" that you will lose everyone because you want out, then can you really call them family? Can you really say you would lose them or would they be losing you? keep in mind my case is extreme, so don't do anything rash, I would spend a lot of time thinking about what would be best for you in your case.

We don't need a repeat of the Dark Ages where people are tortured, jailed or murdered or burned at the stake for not believing exactly as some stupid assholes want them to. Even the stupid Right-Wing Fundies who think they want a theocracy or dominionism don't really want it and many of them come to that realization soon enough (also theocracies are man-made not God-made, Jesus who is very God Himself, when He walked the Earth as a mortal man, said, "My kingdom is not of this world" and He fled when some people kidnapped him and tried to make Him their king, and He refused to get involved in monarchies and governments nor did He ever try to overwrite people's God-given free will, theocracies are from men not from God and they are tyrannical and evil and they cause countless atrocities and deaths, that's why we need a first amendment in the first place to prevent fucked up shit like that from happening and for protecting people from being oppressed and persecuted for their different beliefs or their lack of belief). Progressive Christians and Liberal Christians realize just how important the first amendment is; separation of "church" and state, freedom of/from religion, freedom of assembly, the government not being allowed to endorse or promote any particular religion, etc, etc, because they believe in freedom, all freedoms; freedom of choice, freedom of beliefs or non-belief, freedom of speech, freedom of expression. A lot of Progressive Christians and Liberal Christians are Secular Christians (secular simply means that you support separation of "church" and state and freedom of/from religion, it is not synonymous with Atheist and should not be used interchangeably with Atheist and Atheists don't have a monopoly on secularism, a lot of Theists are secular as well especially those who are Left-leaning) and Humanist Christians (Humanist simply means you care about the development, well being, creativity and progress of the human race, Jesus who is very God Himself was the biggest Humanist as He cared deeply about feeding the poor and taught people to feed and clothe the poor, visit people in the hospital or in prison, helping the sick and the disabled and the downtrodden, etc). So a lot of Left-leaning Christians are: Secular Humanist non-denominational Progressive Christians, and I know it's a mouthful, but this is what we are and we believe in freedom for all. I still feel this way in my 30s, being an LGBT woman of color and unapologetic atheist in a country whose power-hungry leader cuddles up to Christian theocrats and white nationalists who would have people like me silenced and subjugated if given the chance.
Moebym, 3 times in that post you felt the need to tell people you are not white, you could just say what you are.
@David Allred yeah I know she's not white she said it three times, lol.
@David Allred she brought it up 3 times "woman of color" is saying she not white. That is the whole point I was making, saying you're a poc is just stating you're not white. So what you gonna nitpick about nitpicking next, muppet.

Just yesterday, I was sharing with my son how restless I felt regarding all that’s happened and how I think that it’s all about power and control. Today, he shared this with me. I now have clarity on all of the things I questioned, and believe I made the right decision when I turned my back on organized religion. Again, thank you!
Three years later ... Has your "denial" of organized religion .... "Empowered" the power -N- control "people"?
The problem with Evangelical Christianity (and other similar sects) is they care far more about rituals than people.
And money. Don't forget money.

Well, the deficit is pretty meaningless. Imagine a contractor you want to build you a house said the inches deficit is too high. But better, if churchs paid taxes it'd wipe them out.
Romans 13:1-7
1 Everyone must submit to governing authorities.
What takes? Even the massive businesses they own don't pay taxes. Not a bloody penny.

@1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV Yes, he said he is a follower of christ or something along those lines.
=/= Jesus
Ok bruh, take a breath. the DNC sucks, but millionaires & billionaires cannot be Marxists. Common sense.

@ابو ليث الخطيب LOL - Logical, rational, clear-thinking people, that can use their critical thinking skills, look at the natural world and say, "I want to know more, I want to understand”. While the religious say "No need to understand, it's all here in my old book written by a primitive culture 1000's of years ago". I like to believe things that are real, not make-believe. @Andrew Gray Which rules though? Most of those in the bible are horrifying. Stoning to death disobedient kids, women accused of adultory and anyone doing anything on the sabbath?
@Andrew Gray Sure, there a a couple of "rules" in the bible that are great, however they are overshadowed by the dozens truly horrible and crazy passages in there also.
Thank you, Seth, for posting this very informative and intriguing presentation. Again, I believe you have left a great impression on a wide audience with your keen insight and fact-based evidence which supports many of the arguments made against the Christian religion and other organized religious groups in the United States. I hope you do a part 2 to this presentation.
Hey Seth, I've certainly missed your speeches. Thank you so much for sharing this one with us!
Tripoli was engaged in piracy and the letter was an attempt to protect our ships from these attacks, but it did not work and Jefferson ended up having to send in the Marines, as is immortalized in the lines of the Marine corps hymn, "From the shores of Tripoli...."

Every reference to a god
from the beginning of recorded history
is man made.
The place to begin the god question is in the present moment.
So let's begin with the question,
Do you see a Biblical Hebrew god with three personalities hiding in his magic kingdom in the clouds?
I don't.
@LuthAMF Get help, cult member.

Thank you for this. It is an articulate expression of what I was raised to understand is our great nation.
Imagine if Thomas Paine wrote in his books, references to the bible as "the Goat Herder's Guide to the Universe" back in 1800.
The word "Our Creator" appears in the Tripoli Treaty from John Adams and in Jefferson's "Declaration of Independence"
so it appears they were "god" believers in some sense but deny that the nation was founded on religion.
However it makes no difference to me what they believed.
I can see for myself
there is no god.
Instead,
I see that I am a cluster of sub atomic particles
which have briefly come together to form this body
before breaking up once again to form something else.
I remember read TP Age of Reason. What an eye opener that was. That book should be required reading in all schools.
Just ordered your new book from Amazon. Looking forward to another page turner. Thanks!
Eloquent as always. Living in secular Sweden and astonished that facts and science is held in such low regard in the US.
Not really related, only in the sense of christian attempts to change the historical narrative in their favor:
I went to catholic school up until 8th grade.
Couldn't agree more! I had pre-ordered a copy of your new book, and it came in the mail yesterday - super excited to start it!!!

Hey seth, how do I get out of a verry Christian family, I'm only 15 and I am scared that I will loose everyone
you need to go to a secular college and start a new life...what kind of church does your family go to?
Uuuu... thats hard man
I cant even imagine - half of my family was already atheist, and - well, im from Poland. In Europe beeing atheist isn't realy that big of the deal
I want to give you advice however.
First - wait. It's might be the best way for now. Wait until 18 years old. Its 3 years, but you can spend those years to realy prepare. 18 years old is moment where parents can't realy throw "its just a phase" at you - cuz you are an adult by that point.
second - Make new friends - atheist one, from more secular places - like, those who would not give a fuck about your religion
Third - start braking the ground. Start talking with parents about faith, and your relations with them. Not all parents are soo religious, that they will hate you for abandoning faith. Or i hope soo for you. I still had problems with relgious part of my family, but i had support from other places. Like my grandfather, who litearly called Church the "Mafia" XD
It will be hard - realy fucking hard - but you will prevail :)
*Take care*
Hey fellow secular person.
I recommend you reach one of the many organizations that help people get out of religion like ffrf(freedom from religion foundation). In the show the atheist experience they also give you different web pages to go to and get information.
Personally i think there is not only one way to get out, it depends on the situation you are in and what you are confortable admiting to your family and such.

He got it wrong. Just because it was founded by a Christian Nation that doesn't mean its fully a Christian country.
I am curious as to why there is so little discussion in mainstream and special interest circles on the principles of the 7 Mountains Mandate and its influence on why evangelical Christians have worked to infiltrate every sphere of society. I believe this teaching that has shaped American Christianity since the late 60s needs to become part of the conversation. Seth and companie,
I'm a Progressive/Center-Left Christian and I agree with you. The United States and Canada for that matter (I'm Canadian) are not "Christian nations", they are melting pots and they have been for a very long time. Like most if not all Progressive Christians, I support separation of "church" and state, freedom of/from religion, and anti-discrimination laws for LGBT people and Atheists/non-religious people. I believe that no one should have the right to write their beliefs or interpretation of their faith (especially of the Right-Wing FundaMENTAList variety) into law and force them on everybody.
They believe in the right and freedom to controversial or unconventional opinions and beliefs, like exposing and opposing the myth of "redemptive violence":

Like the right and freedom to watch and enjoy Secular shows like "Secular Talk" with Kyle Kulinski and "The Humanist Report" with Mike Figueredo (I love both of those shows).
