I purchased the older beginner box for both my son and myself. Although I had never played tabletop Battletech, I did play Mechwarrior 2 in the past and I always loved the mechs. Now, I have a nice collection and I'm currently 3D printing terrain for the tabletop game.
I like that the 40th anniversary starter & AGOAC boxes have complementary artwork that would look good as display bookends to a BT shelf. An extra Vindicator would be nice, though not quite enough to justify getting another copy of the starter set.
Man, I love the new box artwork, but my all-time favorite is still going to be the one that brought me into the BT universe along with the unique art style that we've only ever seen within the 4th edition box set. I really wish I could find someone to 3D model some of those mechs!
Great starter box set! I like to use this along with a modified version of the quick start rules to demo the game for my non-wargaming friends. I keep the simplified record sheets but add terrain rules to take advantage of 3D printed terrain, which really helps draw in newcomers.
@@fherot8200 CGL kinda screwed me over on my last $20 coupon. Refunded an order that sat forever (item was in stock when I placed my order) then refunded me and didn’t reset my coupon. Fun.
Alpha Strike boxset is legitimately the best Battletech value box out there. Especially if you’re interested in AS more as a format. But even if you’re a classic player it’s 13 mechs and a record sheet print out (free pdf online) for not a lot of money, especially on discount retail websites. The only bad thing for me was it was my entry into clan mechs and ripped that bandaid off hard, so I wound up buying more mechs because I had kept out of clan tech and now there’s no reason to not embrace it all
@@timunderbakke8756 I was a classic battle tech player from back in the 80s. I have all the other box sets, even went double on the clan invasion, but only for the classic mechs. Now I have a ton of these little cards and I just want to see how it is to field a huge assault on a planet. Only 54.00 on Amazon
I'll be picking this and the new AGoAC up soon. I need more minis for Alpha Strike and the IlClan Primer will be helpful since I've not read any post Civil War fiction 🤘
Waiting for mine to arrive these days :) I have the AGoAC box and decided to get this one just for the two mechs. Also it was strange having the record sheet, alpha strike card and pilot card for the Griffin without the actual model. Not gonna lie the new box art was also one of the reasons :D

Yeah I will agree that they could do better on the store front/customer service. But I have had no real complaints with the orders I have placed with them. Still if they were sold in a package you could pick them up at a convention.
With the costs of International shipping in the CGL store probably a good thing it doesn't try to direct people there to prevent people outside the US running screaming from the game with the shipping costs 🤣
They canceled and refunded my last order but I used the coupon from one of my boxes and they have conveniently neglected to respond to my inquiry about making that right. I’d have used it on something else but instead I’m left to kick rocks. Love the game and minis, parent company sometimes blows my mind though.
I definitely want a griffin for my AS card in GoAC but I am tempted to just get the kell hounds box. Two of the mechs are repeats for me but there’s the one new mech plus the griffin and it’s the same cost as this kit. I don’t need more classic mats and the beginner sheets aren’t worth it for me (and I have a few to introduce people if I need anyway from the Target exclusive essentials box I picked up, which DID have the CGL coupon inside)
My son and I snagged this box. We cracked it open and started playing in about 5 minutes. I love that about this game.

I got a damaged Battletech Essentials box from Target for $12 and the contents were pristine - along with the $20 coupon. And now I have 2 Wangs.

The original beginners box from CGL was already an excellent way for new folks to start the game. The new box is just as good if not better.

I had the original BattleDroids box. It was the predecessor to BattleTech. Wish I would have kept all my og BattleTech stuff.
I got this just for the Vindicator (no shade to the Griffin, but I love the Catalyst redesign of the Vindy)

Funny, I was actually thinking about branching out with some BT on my own channel and I thought about doing a review of this box first.
While I love the fact that they did a 40th anniversary box, I wish they would have made the poses different for both mechs!

It doesnt look like there are any differences in the contents. I was thinking the Universe info might have a different map.

Double check the mech cards didn't stick together. I have had that happen a couple times.
