I think this, along with shows like Kim Possible and Proud Family, shows that the late 90s/early to mid 00s knew how best to appeal to both boys and girls, where it never tried to demean anyone and just tried to make something both can enjoy. It seemed to figure out a great balance that treated everyone with respect and never talked down to its audience.

Charmed, Buffy, The Craft and when I got more mature Angel, Smallville you name the show or a movie and I always inclined to the witch character. Something so "enchanting" about them. I suppose its the mixture of being a fragile yet strong individual being at the same time that spoke to me. S3 of Sabrina was my fav btw.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch is definitely one of my all-time favorite shows that I go back to at least once every year and it's been that way for me ever since I started annually rewatching the show back in 2010. I loved the show as a kid in the 90s and I remember I'd watch the show with my father and brother every TGIF (along with Charmed on Thursday nights lol) back then. I feel like the show held up well all things considered It's so funny going back to season 1 and then jumping into season 2 because of the totally noticeable tone shift. Season 1 felt darker in tone as there wasn't as much slapstick comedy and I dunno, it just felt mundane and bleak (in a good way) before they upped the anty with the zanier humor that the show developed in season 2 onward. I was a bit sad that we didn't see Drell in season 2 & 3 though, I loved how the aunts interacted with him lol Mr. Pool was a good character as well but Miss Quick was a great replacement.
I agree with how creative the show was what with it parodying different cinema genres. It's hard for me to choose between season 2 and season 3 as which one was my favorite because I liked the plot of season 2 with the witch's license but season 3 had so many funny episodes. Season 4... It was okay. It sucked that we lost Libby and Valerie. Dreama was a sleeper character and I forget that she was even part of the show sometimes, she was wasted potential. Brad was slightly more interesting with the witch's "jeans" and how how he was a regular friend for Harvey. Josh.. I couldn't stand, he was obnoxious and the way he tried to move in on Sabrina was just inappropriate and with the way he was written out completely after season 6, it felt like such a waste of time.
I know that everyone likes to say that Salem was the best part of the show and I agree that he was great but honestly I think the whole main core cast was great and bounced off well with each other, the perfect casting by far. Really I could gush and geek out over Sabrina all day, the show, at least the first 3 seasons were great and 4-6 are watchable even if they weren't as good as the first 3. Season 7 was flaming pile though, I'm sorry to anyone who liked it but it was awful. When the aunts were written out, it hurt the show so much. As much as I loved Sabrina and Salem, there Aunt Zelda and Hilda were just as integral to the show and I just didn't think that Sabrina and Salem alone were enough to carry that wretched last season. But aside from that, the show is a classic. Love the atmosphere, love the fashion, love the copyrighted music choices they went with during it's on-air run. Just a timeless late 90s classic

Sabrina really was at it's best when the core four of Sabrina, Hilda, Zelda, and Salem. I agree with everything you said, Hilda was ofc my favorite, but Zelda was a close 2nd. Nick Bakay as Salem was iconic. Hilda and Zelda were some of the most believable siblings to be portrayed on TV. The number of continuity errors and abandoned characters is staggering, but the series' charm is undeniable. Think one of my favorites is season 2's A River of Candy Corn Runs Through It if only for the part where Hilda yells "No don't come in here Zelda's naked" and all thought season 7 was clearly the weakest the Christmas episode with Roxie's mom was great too. And the finale was nearly perfect if only they could've brought Zelda back 😭

I really love this series, having watched it in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Looking back on it, I still love it, and can more appreciate what each ep does. They all ring a bell.
Of course, nostalgia is a large part of it for me and I presume most of us, having seen it at a young age, or seeing a series older than some of us are. The entire series pretty consistently tells rather obvious morals throughout start to finish, and does not stray from them. But you can watch each episode on its own without having to see them in sequential order to enjoy them. But if you do follow chronology you'll like it more. And it never fails with the jokes, which remained pretty on point.
Salem was always a show stealer, and I particularly like the third to final episode. In it is the only time I think he smacked Sabrina. He took loads of abuse throughout the entire series, but he never dished it out. This is the one time he ever did it, and even in that episode he gets smacked a few times himself. And it'd appeal to scalies.

so glad I found ur channel and this video, sabrina was a huge part of my childhood even though it was slightly before my time (I'm 24). this show was an escape for me as a kid and a real source of joy during some very lonely times. we owned the dvds of every season and would just watch every episode over and over, to the point that I have so many lines of dialogue and episode plots memorized. I would even sometimes doodle sabrina's hairstyles in my middle school planner bc I loved her style from the early seasons, and still do lol. now, as an adult, I've found myself pausing movies and tv shows that I was watching with my bf to point out an actor that I recognized from being on sabrina, and explain who they played (like when Lindsey Sloane was on Psych, or more recently when I noticed Andrew Keegan on an episode of House and I had to pause and explain that he played Joel the terrible magician in season one lol. and apparently years later was eventually caught up in a cult scandal? anyways). and at my old job a 10,000 maniacs song came on that I was only able to recognize because of their cameo on season two's halloween episode of sabrina, so I obviously had to come home and tell my bf about that lol. watching this video and looking back on the show was such a joy, bc you're right, it was so creative, and funny, and the characters were written in a way that really resonated with me, and that's a big part of why it's stuck with me so much. I haven't really revisited this show at all since I turned 18 but I've considered going back to it several times, even more so now. in any case it always makes me happy to find ppl talking about and appreciating this show for how special it was/is, because I don't see that very often!

As much as I love the show,
I think they should've ended it once she graduated high school cause it was not the same after that and I hate how they got rid of main characters all the time including Zelda, Hilda and Harvey with no explanation.

    • @BetterWithBob
      @BetterWithBob  Год назад +2

Supposedly Zelda was axed because Beth Broderick felt the character was going nowhere, and Hilda left because Caroline Rhea landed her own talk show. The WB axed Harvey thinking Sabrina needed to "leave that high school baggage behind"

Yeah I'm not sure why she was axed. Melissa did say in an interview that sometimes there would be drama in the writers room, and that if a writer left under bad circumstances they'd stop using a character they'd created so they didn't have to keep paying them royalties. So maybe that was it

I actually rewatched the whole series and I think S4 was honestly so boring. Dreama was useless, no Valerie or Libby, a huge change in status quo and Brad was such a non-villain compared to Libby. At least S5 knew where it wanted to go and I think episodes like House of Pi, Sabrina the Activist and Do You See What I See? really show the strength of S5. Josh was sexist and honestly trash, S7 was...a mess but once the irrelevant Scorch subplot was out of the way, the final few episodes meant that the show ended strong despite the season's lack of budget and aunts. I also think it was very realistic that things changed when she went to college rather than forcing characters to stay around, Roxy's characterisation is probably the least dated in the entire seasons with her references to environmentalism and championing climate being a part of her character. Morgan was hit or miss but she's better than Aaron or Josh easily.
The college seasons get a lot of slack and I watched the show in reruns as I wasn't even alive in the nineties so I didn't have any nostalgia attached to it necessarily. I think the biggest issue with the college seasons is Sabrina's choice to study journalism which is something that isn't necessarily at odds but was never set up in the way her love for Science was. Also in S6 and S7 there are some really creepy and sexualised outfit choices which make me side-eye the male directors who signed off on it. The episode where Sabrina gets turned into a 'bimbo' and her breasts are made larger and her dress is shorter is such a weird subplot that, for me, is always a skip. Easily my worst episode.

I was even clearly featured a handful of times. The ones I can remember are when I was a zombie at the coffee shop running wild and Sabrina and Dreams had to round us up and lasso us all together, and another episode where Sabrina is an old woman in the school hallway and hands me a handkerchief when I sneeze, and I also remember being a football player celebrating a score at a football game. I just remember Dreama in the stands. Hmm. Maybe it was all the same season. I remember I had just graduated high school. BUT when I was 15 I was actually in the pilot episode of Sabrina and Mr Rhodes at the same time cause they were right across the alley from each other at universal and I was cast on that when I was outside eating a burrito between both stages.

It is not appealing to me at all because I like shows with witches when they are dark or at least the foundation is dark. Of course it can have its cheesy moments but I feel like for STTAW it‘s the opposite and I‘m sure some people enjoy that
Even though I don‘t like this show you gave me insight into why it‘s still objectively good and how it shaped my childhood in a influential? way.

Sabrina may have existed for a long time prior to the 90s sitcom, but the 90s sitcom did so much for a property that had otherwise always been Archie's side-dish, not only did the show give us the definitive version of Salem, but it also fleshed out the world of Sabrina massively with lots of lore and concepts that had never been explored before or since, and by god was the show visually stunning, for a 90s show the visual effects were amazing most of the time, particularly from season 2 onward when they reworked Salem's puppet to look more realistic; to this day this show has some of the best magic effects ever, it's so fantastical while still feeling tangible.
