This was the most informative video that I have seen. So much education provided by you. Very helpful. I have watched hundreds of videos and you really helped us. Thank you. Beautiful job.
@jcrone2ds Agreed. Plastic may not be the best, but it would still be better than just soil. Time will see the border stones migrating outward. I have seen it eventually happen in every case where no edge restraints were used.
No paver restraint is just like concrete on plain dirt. There's going to be some lateral movement on the edges for sure and that grass will begin to grow in the joints. Don't rely on poly sand to hold it together bc it won't. Think about hand tamping the corners where your compactor doesn't get. Good looking installation in the end, but I'd recommend taking these measures to ensure your work holds up. I'm I'm MN and our freeze thaw climate is nothing to leave to chance. The edges and corners are 1st to be affected.
Nice that's the proper way to do it. 3/4 clean rock & sand. Most contractors i got estimates shortcut just some type stone aggregate for base that's it.
Looks good sir but beginning by street? If you want to fan end of walk you have to overlay brick and cut angle. Especially when there is a border brick . You border stops at widening of walk .
Thanks for the video. I plan on trying to learn more and more while trying to get into small paver projects this year. This video will be a great base to build my knowledge from.
I dont mean to be off topic but does anybody know of a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost my password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Abel Gunnar i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and im trying it out atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
How did you get into pavers? How did you start your first paver job? Were you nervous? How did you offer a service you didn’t know how to do the first time? Where did you practice? How do you know how many hours it will take when you’ve never done it before? Do you hofbsrge the materials or did you just tel the customer the price of the material is what you paid for it and only make money on the labor? Did you charge a delivery fee for picking up the materials? These are the deeper questions that help out so much and have the most effectiveness in helping people out. A video on stuff like this would be extremely helpful. The first steps to moving in this direction.
My experience using PVC piping is they flex, better to use metal pipe to level out. Use plastic edging with landscaping pins to keep pavers from moving.
Get yourself some 1" EMT galvanized conduit !! Its way more rigid and straight !! You can get 10 footers so you can cover more area. Looks like your using huge plastic PVC and have like 2" of sand, and PVC is not straight nor is it rigid enough. And no edge restraint ? Pattern and install looks great good job
Hey Alex I’m 14 and wanting to do paver patios and walk ways next year could u do an in depth video of all the tools that I would need and how I would do a paver patio and walkway
Wow I see so many comments about how poorly the job was done but I believe I heard him say that that's what the client wanted? I could be wrong but I think the layout was very nice. He also mentioned that one side of the lawn was higher than the other. Maybe the service he provided was all the client could afford and if so, he did a nice job.
Run a small bead of mortar as a edge restraint, a portland base for your area. This gives you a quality restraint along with not having the plastic edging pop up overtime. Very cheap option about, $6 a bag.
I would have installed this using the exact same things except I use stone dust for base. Curious on the lip off the bottom step where the bedding sand went up to it.... it looked in the video like the sand was a little lower than the concrete lip... Plus with the paver sinking into the sand about 1/4" it seems it wouldn't match up. I assume you just added a little more sand there so it landed level on the concrete lip.
I have the same Home Depot kneeling pad. Everyone that uses it tries to take it home. I keep a special eye on it and often retrieve it from the back of worker's pickups mixed in with their tools or I find it neatly hidden in the debris pile where somebody hopes to grab it later. The worker sitting on it at lunch is the most likely cushion thief. Nobody steals my pad, lol.
Nice careful job. Well done. Don't know when I"ve seen a walkway done so carefully. Looks real pretty next to her beautiful flowerbeds. Pat yourself on the back. Thanks. :)
Man I will give my opinion. Regardless you need to use geotextile between subdirt and base and also poly edge restraint with 10 or 12" spikes. I know you said you do on some but man if someone turns a mower around on that walk that soldier course is gone. Idk just my two sense if I have to cut the costs to the point I cant put geotextile and edge restraint I dont want it. Last thing I want is a call back. Neat work work, and cleanup👍
Thank you! Super informative! We started a walk way, thought we had enough pavers(reclaimed), nope not enough so we need to come up with something else.
Can’t tell but it appears you didn’t seal the borders in with either concrete or some type of landscape edging. I would imagine this just started to shift and is no longer in the same place anymore because nothing is holding it together
Alex, thank you for this awesome video! It's exactly what I needed as I prepare to tackle my own walkway project. I have some questions if you don't mind answering. 1. You did not show where you started putting the pavers down. Do you start at the stairs or down the side? Is there a science or is it a preference? 2. I noticed that there were small empty squares when you were installing the pavers, but I never saw you fill them in. Was it something that needed to be cut to fill those spots?
No logic to laying except avoid stepping on the sand. Those squares are leftovers for cut bricks to fill at the end. One of those regular standard bricks make two squares and fill two holes. You need a masonry saw. Do NOT use angle grinder.
I would definitely recommend putting some rebar caps on those stakes incase the homeowner brings you out some muffins it would be horrible for them to drive the tops of those things into there shins you know how sharp the tops are.. shit like that set you apart from the other guys . Safety First much love from Phoenix Arizona
Hmmm, just came across this, interesting video, I don't want to be unkind, but it will soon disintegrate into a shambles. In that, the edging will fall apart because of lack of restraints, no weed mat's to curtail weed growth and the front edging will not withstand even pedestrian traffic, it will soon collapse. I think you will learn from this project.
Great video! What are the DOT requirements in your area? We have to have CDL’s for dump trailers and DOT numbers for anything pulling a tandem axle trailer.
Mike Robinson They are going through a lot of changes in Illinois and I think we are going to get our CDL’s soon just so we don’t have to worry about any confusion
@@ChrisLell1 Thanks Chris. Overhere we spread a little bid of compost or sand over the seeds. Then we press it gently with a grasroller. How do you keep te straw from blowing away?
Why not use longer screed rails and place them a little wider than the walk-way...then you dont have to worry about moving/ filling in the hole. On the edge of the pavers add crushed at an angle and with the leftover sand top it. Grass will grow through. I can share pictures...
justy crusty I was about to inquire about that since I’m in the process of doing a walkway. I just bought the metal edging today but if I don’t need it I’ll take it back it was expensive
@@ultimateaudio8239 Probably won't be too bad since the ground is pretty flat and the soil looks good. There is only 1/2" of paver sticking up too. But I would have preferred to seen some edging.
Detailed Lawn Services Sometumes we do. Usually plastic but I started not using one this year for some projects and it makes it cheaper on the customer and honestly I think it’s a wast anyway. It ends up popping up and showing which looks like crap. Just my opinion. The edging won’t make or break the wall or patio.

Another quality project completed by the Nicken's crew! Keep it up!
What did you do right by the steps to transition to the pavers?
JRM Landscapes we had a little gap that we filled with poly sand but the pavers started full pavers right there so there were no small cuts

for that kind of driveway is it cheaper to do pavers compared to having a concrete cement?

Greetings from a fellow landscaper from the Netherlands! I was wondering, whats the purpose of the straw?
Straw helps keep the grass seed from blowing away in the wind, and helps retain moisture and block sunlight.
