- Death is often a taboo subject for many but not for all. In this vlog we make our way to Pashupatinath Temple, a Hindu Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal to experience a traditional Hindu cremation. We learn the reasoning, process, and importance of this ancient ritual alongside a local friend we made during our time. And how did we get there? Oh, we traveled like the locals today on a $0.15 bus ride which took us roughly 15 minutes 😎
If you are in Kathmandu we recommend you make your way to Pashupatinath Temple and experience this for yourself. It is a process that is happening 24/7 so there is no right or wrong time to go as long as you go with an open heart and respect. This filming was filmed with intention, respect, and love. And death is often hard for you to discuss maybe learning how other cultures perceive it, like this, is just what you need!

I absolutely love that you had this experience! I was hoping you would take us to one of these ceremonies. I get so disappointed that Western culture frowns on and declare other cultures weird or disgusting because of their practices surrounding death. This cremation ceremony is a beautiful passage from this life. They truly hold their loved ones in such high esteem that they perform all of the ritual associated with this type of cremation. We all need to work on death not being such a scary thing. It touches my heart to see this and the spirituality surrounding it. I’m so glad you had a guide to take you there! And thank you so much for taking us along. I love the thought of allowing the body to release the spirit ❤ I know you had to have left this experience changed in some way.

You remind me so much of my mother Erin, in that you are of an older (that us but NOT by much sheesh 🤭🙄) generation but you are SO much wiser than what you may be told to believe or not afraid of DIFFERENCES which I feel many are. NEPAL is a whole new level of adventure (as Paddy would say). To deal with death is a difficult subject. My respect that you took this on! You handled this quite well. In Thailand, they also have this type of open cremation in the more remote county side. I wish you all the best, especially warm, beautiful weather! Keep on filming! You always manage to get my like!

The concept of Cremation in Hinduism is not just to liberate the soul from the body/vessel- it is also to return the body to the 5 elements- fire, water, air, earth and the soul to eternal truth !! Hinduism or sanatan dharma also worships nature !!
The mourning lasts for 12 days - coz it’s believed that the soul takes about 12 days to finally leave and acquire another vessel/body.
The 12 days of mourning is very similar to a quarantine. The concepts and rituals in Hinduism is more closer to science. People in ancient times use to die of various diseases; most of these diseases use to be contagious… hence, during the 12 days of mourning- the immediate families of the dead eat pure vegetarian and healthy food and fruits; herbal teas, wear white and do not touch other people etc
Other relatives, friends & families and priests visit on daily basis and read from holy books etc to console the families.
On 13th day, all friends/families are invited to celebrate the dead and the living !!
Different cultures different ways !! When you see it with unprejudiced view; it’s all beautiful !!

Amazing experience that and thanks for sharing guys. I've been to a few post death 'events' in Thailand with the wife's family where the body is cleansed and the usual processes completed and the close family have their own time with the body and comfort each other. From that the body is placed and rests in a refrigerated coffin at the family home for up to six days (as I understand it the wake period depends on funds available). The coffin is placed up high normally in the largest available room within the house and in front of it a beautiful array of flowers set up below and the framed photo of the deceased put in place. The buddhist monks are arranged to arrive at the home at around 6pm each day and do their thing with prayers while the family and friends are present and after the ceremony are fed and given gifts. Once the monks leave everybody sits around drinking , eating and socialising with music playing. The food finished and tables cleared it then becomes like a gambling casino (gambling is illegal in Thailand except on these occasions where the police intentionally stay away) In the morning of the last day of the wake the family loads the coffin and body within to the back of a ute and transport it to their crematorium and family and friends follow. Once there the coffin is carried into the crematorium site with one family member carrying a large framed photo of the deceased out in front whilst all others walk behind. The actual cremation the coffin is opened and a family member opens a bottle of accelerator which is sprinkled all over the clothes adorning the body the coffin then sealed and the coffin placed inside the oven. The process therefore would be much quicker than the open burning process witnessed here. Considering the topic of today's video I thought a should share that experience of mine on the family farm in Lukkae (near Kanchanaburi) Thailand. Cheers guys.

Cremation is done all over the world but it's more out and the open and celebrated this way. But I do know how the whole cremation thing goes here in North America.
