Last week I photographed the worlds most iconic steam train, the "Flying Scotsman". There's only one place that'll compliment steams royalty and that's at the awesome Ribblehead Viaduct set in the gorgeous Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Preparing and setting up the shot an hour or so before hand, the weather was looking a little hit and miss. Thankfully the weather and the light could't have been better in the end.
Apparently this was a once-in-a-lifetime shot... no pressure then

The picture of the trains crossing the viaduct reflected in the puddle worked really well, a very inventive way of capturing a train picture with a twist.
nice work and looks great in black and white.
Cheers Graham
Naming things is always good. That's Simon Fell behind the viadduct.
my grandad worked on the railway and i think was the relief driver on the flying scotsman he also drove the mallard too , this brought back a lot of memories of my grandad he told me a few storys of his time on the scotsman, thanks for this
Thank you Russell. So glad my video stirred up a few nice memories for you
Great shots Gary. One of my favourite spots
Good one. I learned a few things today. It is a good thing 'everyone' did not wait for 'everyone' to disappear.
Cheers. Imagine as you say, If everyone had the same thought :)
Gary so glad I came across your videos, you have a great way of explaining things. I'll be watching more from now on.
Great stuff Gary. Enjoyed that.
Come for the photography, stay for the tourism advice.
I think this is a good comment? :) Cheers Harold
Absolutely, like most of the very best videos, yours works on multiple levels: top photography advice, inspiration and insights to visiting Our Green and Pleasant Land, and personal story.
Thank you kindly
Superb. Short but very sweet. And a location I have actually been to!
Stephen Darlington - yeah it's an awesome location. Thanks for the nice comment too
Brilliant, like the two shot and overlay, thank you so very much .
Graham Ball - cheers Graham, very kind
Really lovely photograph. Looked like the whole of England had turned up and their wives. LOL.
Very enjoyable video. Nice that you found such a "secret spot" to shoot from!
Not so secret, there were hundreds of us there :)
Thanks for the nice comments too, much appreciated
Gary you are a godsend mate.
I'm quite new to photography and really like shooting at Mach Loop and steam locomotives on the S+C so having these video's to clearly explain how to get the best results at both locations is great. I currently only have a Nikon D3300 and so its good to know that its perfectly up to the job with a decent lens on it (as you explained in the Mach Loop vid). Subscribed.
Hi Cowley, very kind of you to say. The camera is more than up to the task so there's no excuse for not getting out there and producing excellent results :)
Thanks for subscribing too. All the best. Gary
The most important idea I got from this vlog is the critical importance of planning an image for something as apparently complicated as shooting a train. I had not really done that before. A neglect to be corrected
Cheers Glen. I don't always plan a shoot so meticulously but in this case, I knew it would save so much time in post.
Hi Gary, Neil Carter here we met at ribblehead for the Scotsman and went up to Twistleton scar after. Ive just watched part one tutorial really enjoyed it, you are using filters to maintain drama the sky, but i guess this works against the shutter speed bringing it down ?? so do you compensate for this by increasing your ISO?? to get 1/250 sec. Finally did you take all the shots with the filters on including the moving train.
Nice photography sir .....like the monochrome shots ! ...fred
Fre'd Shedding' s model Railway - Very kind of you to say. Cheers
Nice one. You deserve more subscribers mate.
Cheers Keef, kind of you to say. I only started to use my RUclips channel for Vlogging a month ago. Before then I was just using it to satisfy Google. I'm getting there. So despite being a Pro Photographer for 15 years I have only just started videoing myself. Lets just say I'm still learning :)
Nice one, was there myself for both crossings
Andy Beattie Photography - love to see your picture Andy. Can you link it here?

Nice pictures Andy - Try and convert your bridge picture to B&W.
Great video. Subscribed.
Joao Carlos - hi, thanks and thanks :)
Great vlog Gary... I think I liked the 1st B/W's best because the train's stack smoke went the other way giving you a clear shot of the entire train & shot from the low angle, interesting...
Have you considered going with back button focusing? I have both my crops set-up this way, took a bit getting used to it, never looked back since... Once I lock my focus, I can re-compose till my hearts content, shutter button nor my release cable button can no longer make micro focus adj.'s,...:)
Bill Farr...
Never been a fan of the back button focus, even for sport. Totally understand how it works, but I'm just not that keen. I know a few photographers that shoot that way. It's just personal preference 👍🏻
Agreed... Turning the AF off on the lens after focus lock accomplishes the same thing in One Shot Mode, incl. AF AI Servo tracking on moving subjects & AF switched back on on the lens... :)
BF...
..Given your size and features (Tommy Cooper) I would suggest getting a fez :)
lol It's been said a few times 😊😊
nice one, l sat there all day, no train!! wrong day whoops
lol oops :)
red filter ?
Hi Peter, Red filter? Infra Red?
No not iffra red not that deep a red , turns blue black and darkens the sky . b&w photos only obviously.
I think its a very nice hat....🙈😝
Tony Pickard - its s terrible hat, just like yours ;)
