The London sign would be a reference to the Midland Railway who built the line, 242 miles to St Pancras!

    Hi G,
This video was fabulous! I stayed on holiday not far from Ribblehead Viaduct and we took a trip from there to Carlisle, fabulous journey...also bumped into a mate from work there on the same day...
There was also shop set up on the North bound platform selling souveniers of the Viaduct marketed by the Friends of Ribblehead...I bought a tie if I remember correctly...I really loved your background music choice, it went naturally with the train movements and also your boundless energy, what is it's title? If I hear it again I shall connect it with your video...
    Thanks for brightening my evening...
    Take care,
    Jon B. x

Midland Railway had dispute about track access with the London North Western Railway (WCML) in 1870 so they decided to built their own line which became the Settle to Carlisle line and would had seen trains from London St. Pancras to Carlisle and onto Scotland. But it is a lovely scenic line, still need to visit Ribblehead Viaduct.... Love a good pair of Viaducts lol Great video G

In the days of the old (pre-BR) Midland Railway London was direct from Horton. All the maroon and cream at the S&C stations (and Hellifield) is a throwback to the Midland Railway days. Hellifield was a major station back then.

Rubblehead station didn’t used to have staggered platforms. The station closed, along with all of the other intermediate ones on the line except Appleby, in about 1970. The Northbound platform was demolished to provide rail access to a quarry. When the station re-opened it was served by Southbound trains only. I was quite surprised that they didn’t single the track through the station to enable the remaining platform to be served by trains in both directions; since the track on the Viaduct was already single only a short additional section of single track would have been required. Rather than do this however they decided to build a new Northbound platform. I cannot remember when this was done. I’m not sure if the quarry siding is still there, but it was when the new platform was built so it had to be put in a slightly different location.

I once diverted to see Ribblehead whilst driving to Newcastle in the middle of winter. It was a decent day weather wise until I got up there and the wind was brutal, freezing cold and sideways rain 🤣 Network Rail were working on the viaduct at the time, they deserved every penny working in those conditions.

That 333 took me back a few years. I had the dubious pleasure of machining a modification on all the bogie frames as they came through the works for service. I did a dimensional check of the frame and modification of the spring pockets at an average time of 10 hours per bogie.

Very nice. I've done Skipton and Cononley, but I've been meaning to do stops between Carlisle and Skipton for ages and it's simply too far from my parents house for me to do in a day without a 3 hour drive in either direction. I have done Appleby though, as that's where trains terminated when there was the landslide back in 2016, and that's where the first year of the staycation express starteed from.
The S&C was the Midland Railway's route to Scotland, after the MML up to Leeds and then up, so that does make sense.

Lucky you with the weather! I've visited this area twice in the past 12 months, firstly last August (2022) to travel Carlisle - Leeds (with an advance ticket so no stopping), and secondly by car in May (2023) when I was in the North West as I had Eurovision tickets and wanted a day away from the city. Both times the weather was cloudy, views were OK but not great with some mist & at times fog. The country side is very beautiful, lots of great vistas to feast the eyes, the stations etc have a histroric charm that is second to none. In May stopped in Settle for afternoon tea and found a good selection of great little tea shops. I hope to return again one day for a more detailed exploration, and perhaps a little walking too ... when the weather is nice!

Ilkley and Grassington came in one end, and the line to Colne went out the other, that was another two platforms at least (and, weirdly, it was behind a wall! The underpass you were in, G, was extended to serve these platforms.). Do I get a "thanks, Bob" for this nugget of info?
