  • I took a trip to the Yorkshire dales in the hope of getting a shot I have wanted to capture for over a year ... unfortunately it didn't quite work how I had hoped but was still worth the trip

Appreciate your candor! Others would burry the fails and have viewers believe that things always go just right. Final image bonus.

No-one has everything go to plan ... Although for some people the plans go right more often 🤣

Nice adventure though Dave - it’s tricky up here in Scotland. To avoid the LP I have to go up into the central highlands at least and therefore seeing the core is limited to a 6 week window centering on early august. Requires a lot of planning and research. And midges. Love your video style - nice and authentic, doesn’t seem rehearsed.

Excellent final image. Better luck next year with the Milky Way. It will still be there patiently waiting for you. Sleep well you deserved it. Oh! and best wishes to Rusty.

Ah! the great British weather, great shots though 👌🏻
I've been wanting to make the three and a half-hour drive back up there at night for over a year myself, but when there's been time available the weather has been pants. Hopefully, sometime this year, really wanting to get some star trails over it.

Cool that you show your fails as well as successes Dave. I think we've all had similar experiences.
I am supprised that you didn't use photopills augmented reality just to see where the milky way was hiding 🤔 great content as usual 👍

Even if it didn't work out as planned the shots were great anyway. Good stuff.

Lovely photos. I have just started doing night sky stuff and it is a real learning curve!
Did you use the Tamron 28-75 for it? I have been considering this lens.

Not on this particular occasion, I used the Irix 11mm f4 and Tokina 20mm f2

Nice images though, my first attempt a couple of weeks ago your much better than mine using Groverake Mine in Weardale as the foreground image. Recommend photopils for this though, it overlays an image of where the milkyway should be, I ended up with the Big Dipper over the mine works in the end, but its planned for another visit🙏 fir those clear nights. Nice RUclips channel.👍🙂

      I shooting the video I used the Sony A6400 + Sigma 16mm f1.4
For the photographs I used the Sony A7III with both the Irix 11mm f4 & Tokina 20mm f2

Dave, Very surprised you do not use the phone app PhotoPills. One of the tools in the app is "Night Air" and that would have helped you tremendously. Even if you got out there hours earlier in the near daylight, using Night Air (and advancing the time) would have helped you find the perfect spot to stand and where to point your camera. We shoot the Milky Way in Arizona, which is much further south and so we get dark skies this time of year by 10 PM. I know the further north you are in the Summer, the bigger issue finding truly dark sky can be. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah sod that! ... The most deadly wildlife we have to contend with are squirrels or perhaps a very randy goat 🤣
