Great, informative tutorial, Michael. I haven't heard this song in awhile. I was just doing random searches and came across this. I played bass on this album and Jonny's "Wander This World" album. He was 15 when we cut this....17 or 18 on the next. Amazingly talented! An Old Soul definitely lives in him. The energy/passion you see in this video is exactly what he is in the studio. Two of the most enjoyable albums I've ever played on.

I saw Jonny Lang repeatedly as a 7-8 year old, mostly in small bars and clubs in the Pittsburgh area. I'll never forget leaving and seeing him getting onto his bus. My dad was so starstruck that he had his camera in his hand, and shook Jonny's hand with the other. He still talks about missing the opportunity to get a picture all these years later.
Another fun fact, Jonny shook with his left hand not his right. We didn't know if he had a reason or if it was just a spontaneous mixup, but I remember it being different.
Love your videos Michael, love seeing my childhood brought up again.

So glad you found Jonny Lang. My hubby and I love his music. I've seen 14 of his concerts (one with Sting and Kep Mo in Chicago's outside Grant Park). He signed one of my guitars - I met Jonny 4 times after concerts. He is super nice and kind to his fans. Discovered him when the Blues Brothers 2000 movie came out in 1998 - Jonny is the Custodian performing in 634-5789 at end of movie. A must see.
More Jonny Lang tunes I enjoy are: We Are The Same, A Quitter Never Wins, I am (written by Prince), Still Rainin', Wander This World, Make It Move, 1997 version of Lie To Me (at age 16), and many more! You might also enjoy his CD 'LIve at the Ryman Auditorium' (in Nashville, TN). I blast it when I'm out driving around.

We saw Jonny in a free concert in Snowmass Colorado ten years ago. He was SO much fun to watch and hear. And the band was Killer'. He had a B3 guy who smoked everything and a second guitar player who was about as good as Jonny. I was impressed with how hard Lang worked. and how committed he was, a truly excellent show, away above the norm. I hope he's still doing well. Touring is tough.

Michael ... I gotta say from a personal stand-point "Johnny Lang's" original guitarist Paul Diethelm (aka STRETCH) is the best guitarist I have ever heard in my life and I love seeing him playing in the background of this video ... The guys is an absolute "STONE COLD MURDERING MONSTER" the way he can crush it out in front of a group or in support of someone like Johnny Lang ... He is also a tremendously genuine guy with an unbelievable and kind family ... His story reminds me so much of your story that you have so kindly shared with all of us that have followed you and appreciate the time you put into teaching us and inspiring us numerous times a week ... Thank you Michael ... I love your "PRS Parlor" in that finish ... It must be a great travel guitar !!! Speaking of which check out "STRETCH" w/Michael Shines in this video clip and his hot little parlor guitar !!! #CHEERS !!! ruclips.net/video/299e_dM3auk/видео.html

As a young guitar player coming up at the same time as Jonny Lang, KWS, Derek Trucks, John Mayer, etc... I was always partial when it came to blues to Jonny, his songs were actual "songs" (Melody, chord changes, singing, etc...) but his guitar playing is just on point, he pays homage to the past put still clearly has his own voice!

    • @heatmoon

Derek Trucks is a talent like no other on guitar. But when it comes to pure talent singing Jonny breaks all the rules, his guitar playing is instantly recognizable as Lang, he uses that wah so well without depending on it.

The only time I've been disappointed was when he opened for Buddy Guy, it felt like he was holding back for some reason or just hurrying through so Buddy could play. I also love the tone of Jonny's guitar.

Then teenagers Jonny and Derek are absolutely two of the best ever. I saw Derek front his own band at age 13 opening for Skynyrd in Atlanta. Nobody knew who he was or his age until after their set. His younger sister and brother and Uncle Butch backed him. Kid tore the roof off the Fox Theater. I can imagine Jonny doing the same at age 14. There are videos of Derek playing live at age 9 with a local band near Atlanta. I had Jonny's first CD and nearly wore it out.
When are kids going to stop playing video games and learn something?
    Oh, right.
Teenagers not just playing blues but feeling it and owning it, not just playing the notes. Should be against the law!

SHAKEY GRAVES - ROLL THE BONES , Tyler Childers is most certainly one of the game changers in this era, hopefully bringing back substance and washing the field of trendy come and go artists. Nose to the Grindstone is a song where your body cannot comprehend the feelings that are drawn up, it induces goosebumps and almost a vomit feeling because that song conjures the purest and rawest feelings that hit the deepest most primal depths of our person. I watched your video of the songs breakdown and I could tell you felt everything I just described. That’s when I subscribed to your channel good sir. You get it. You feel it. What music really is. Great reaction video to a song I have liked since I first heard it. 👍 JL generally follows the “rules” but man, you nailed it talking about the waa pedal skills lining up with the vocals and how good the songs are. I think the piano build up and the way the solo drops in on The song Darker Side is another good example of the way his brain works. The rest of the solo isn’t so technically hard but it is so eloquent and interesting. Even after listening to it hundreds of times and learning my own version of it, if I heard it right now I would still smile!
While I’m typin, I’ve been listening to a lot of Kings X lately. Maybe a look at Ty Tabors (spelling?) playing would be fun for you and us? Anything from the self titled album (Big Picture or Prisoner- probably my favorite of his solo) or Its Love are a few of my favorites. He’s got a really good ear, lots of skill and uses some cool effects in odd ways. Sometimes he’s got so much compression or sumthin going you can almost hear tubes squealing as they get pinched. The rest of the band is amazingly tight and the vocals are really good too.
I just found you channel a few weeks ago and really enjoy it. Thanks!

The nuance of that tool is lost on most, and I'd love to see your take on the finer points of the spectral glide that started with Trumpet and Trombone players using moving mutes, and then electrically expressed by guitarists thanks to Bradley J. I'm dying to hear what your reaction to Milo Jones. Check out "Sandro And The French Guy" or his brilliant Randy Newman cover of "While the City Sleeps".

About….1997 is when this song came out. I remember thinking he was just AMAZING! Him and Kenny Wayne Shepherd were like the only guys our age doing that stuff. Unfortunately…..they kind of both very shortly after there first albums changed what they were doing, and at least in my circle of friends I had, they kind of got forgotten about. To us…they were “posers”. Johnny went like 180, Kenny started doing a heavy metal record…and just…..nothing they did seemed to sound as good or pure as those first 1 or 2 albums. 😢
