This is one of Elton's very best. I have always liked Elton's earlier works, best. They were (are) simple and beautiful. Thank you, Michael! You did great!
I've never really been an Elton John fan, but this song always hits me right in the gut--my reactions are the same as yours whenever I listen to it. It's truly amazing. Really great breakdown of the music--I'm going to put my PRS on and play along to it tonight.
My Father Gun is one of my all-time favorite Elton songs. I found it in Elizebethtown, which because it's Cameron Crow, the music throughout is so damn epic. Square One by Tom Petty also became a favorite after that movie.
In the opening you said Elton was one of the greatest singers and songwriters ever. True! But his songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin was instrumental to his success. Elton was the front man to what was essentially a duo. I believe Bernie was primarily the lyricist so in the context of this video it is primarily Elton’s contribution that you are focused on, but thought it was still worth sharing.
I’ve been learning tons from the Elton catalog lately on guitar. By far one of the greatest challenges to find ways to play on guitar with all the flair he adds with piano. Just ringing out the chords brings new respect to his song writing. The melodies are timeless. Great video.
Great job of dis and reassembly with explanations. I, amateur that I am, with evolutions from piano, to clarinet (marching/concert, band/orchestra), then guitar, mandolin and banjo tinkering from the 3rd grade to my 76th year, -- doing it not for money but for the love of -- firmly believe Elton John is the best composer and singer of my time. And considering all the greats I've seen and heard, it is very rarified air.
Fantastic dissection of a memorable performance of great song. Youre your own man clearly, but felt you channelling Rick Beato here. Any chance of you two getting together for a regular general chat? That would be terrific.
Elton was the first artist I got into at age 11 back in 1975. I guess I had an ear for great music at an early age. An 8 track with the Caribou album playing while I played Pong on a black and white TV.
Thanks Michael - Simple progressions maybe, but Elton's compositions have provided one consistent backbone to my near 60 year musical journey from Jazz to Thrash and everything in between.
I'd LOVE for you to continue deeper into the vast Genius discography of the historic yet timeless musical Magic that are the songs of Sir EJ and Bernie Taupin...and do your thing! So happy to see and hear another EJ music fan and appreciator!!! With Gratitude from beautiful Calgary, Alberta, Canada! Shawn
Thank you, Micheal, love your breakdowns and your love of the arts. Have you ever done a breakdown of Alex Lifeson during his performance of Xanado-Exit Stage Left Tour-Live in Montreal?
I think this is one of your best videos, but maybe it's because I was playing rhythm and wailing this song from the sheet music back in the 70s when it came out. This particular recording was marvelous. The way you dissected it note by note in so many places made an impression on me as I've always shied away from learning some songs thinking a note by note approach wouldn't be beneficial. I was wrong. So thanks for that and all of the other great information you included. I appreciate it.
Love your vids, would love to see another dinosaur jr video breakdown, j mascis is one of my all time favourite guitar heroes, we need some hendrix and stevie ray vids too haha
I'm so fond of Elton's music. The first record I remember my brother buying was the single (with that little disc you had to insert in the middle) of Bitch is Back. I remember I said "he's swearing!" 😂 I was 7 or 8.
Michael, I really would like you to react to Hummingbird by BB King ane John Mayer. It's not a live version, but I really think this song has something especial that I just can't explain
The chord voicing on piano don’t always lend themselves to the guitar. Blues accent notes are perhaps close. Frank Gambale has a tuning for guitar that comes close. It’s a variation of the Nashville tuning that allows for adjacent notes to be played at once, as in the Major 7th’s and tonic notes together. Nice job in this!
This gave me a new appreciation for this song (though still not near my top for Sir Elton for me). The compositional mastery of Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is certainly enough to quiet anyone unfamiliar with his prowess: ruclips.net/video/EvcIborfG0Y/видео.htmlsi=7K8LGlRsqiW7g7sS
Can anyone tell me if this has a mandolin as well as guitar in it? I'm not a musician but I love the sounds here, especially at 3:33 ruclips.net/video/Sh-gmHvu62g/видео.htmlsi=t5R43AXr9k_VnK4s
ruclips.net/video/QkmP_rT0PPM/видео.htmlsi=DAUYOwSVkTCUlXEk Thanks for doing everything that you do. I’ve been enjoying your ice cold takes for years. I was hoping you might catch this comment early enough and give this video a listen and maybe take a shot at it sometime. I just discovered pat metheny two days ago and found this cover that is absolutely incredible. Thanks again!
3 seconds of the song and already 10 minutes of commentary. You play more than him. Talk to the point that we forget what part of the song you are even referencing anymore. I know many people have suggested a once over the song then loop back around to discuss. I Can’t understand why that can’t happen.
One of my all time favorite Elton songs. So amazing watching you analyze and playing by ear translating piano on guitar. Wow!
The live version with George Micheal will always melt my face
Came here to say this.
One of the best performances of all time
This is one of Elton's very best. I have always liked Elton's earlier works, best. They were (are) simple and beautiful. Thank you, Michael! You did great!
I think Bernie Taupin needs more than a mention here.
I've never really been an Elton John fan, but this song always hits me right in the gut--my reactions are the same as yours whenever I listen to it. It's truly amazing.

Good point 👍🏻
Elton writes the melody and music. Bernie the lyrics. So anything that Elton plays on the piano he himself wrote not Bernie.
Bernie Taupin is a great lyricist, but so is Tim Rice (the Lion King).

Great video.
Love this song. Your analysis is so fun to watch. Your guitar tone is unreal in this one. Perfect amount of crunch.
I think it’s really interesting to watch you play along to the song as we are listening! Keep doing it please😄
Love to sing this song, those progressions are such a ride!
Great job of dis and reassembly with explanations.

I've been gone for a while. But I came back for this song.
I finally found a guy that can translate what I hear and feel in music.
Thanks Michael - Simple progressions maybe, but Elton's compositions have provided one consistent backbone to my near 60 year musical journey from Jazz to Thrash and everything in between.
Toni Tennille was one of the backup singers in the original recording.
As was Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys
Enjoyed watching this with my dad, thanks for the bonding moment!
As a dad, I heart this!

Pure class ! The song , the lesson .
Could you do a take on
Alvin Lee's, the Bluest Blues.
You could get a 2 Fer with a solo by George Harrison too. Thanks

The version with George Michael live is wonderful.
Like your hat Mike! Great song Great break down wish I had my guitar
That is a beautiful guitar you’ve got
One of the true greats!!!
a remarkable piece of music!!
We need more breakdowns for Dirty Loops! Love your videos
One of the Masters of our time.
Elton is from my hometown. I actually go past where he had his first gig, and he had to jump out of the window because a fight broke out.
Michael, I really would like you to react to Hummingbird by BB King ane John Mayer. It's not a live version, but I really think this song has something especial that I just can't explain
Listen to the original recording from the Caribou Album 1974. The Beach Boys do the harmonies. Priceless.
Stone cold classic. Melodies on melodies.

It’s a variation of the Nashville tuning that allows for adjacent notes to be played at once, as in the Major 7th’s and tonic notes together. Nice job in this!
That was 26:52 minutes of my life. Okay, let me watch it again.
Is the d7 chord maybe an gb diminshed, that might make the eb vocal note fit a little better?
He has become a true dead head!

He’s playing around with the originally written chords here in the video.

I’ve watched this video so many times, and it moves me every single time
Don’t let the son go down on me 🤔 sung by a gay man. Hmm not too sure about this one 😂😂
Wow, no.

"don't let your son go down on me" Rocket Man was way better.
Wow
Someone Saved my Life Tonight is another masterpiece 🫶🏻 sing 🎶 🎹
Sorry what? It’s spelt sun, and you know that 🤔 very bizarre comment
Great song, but next time you are Taking me to the Pilot @michaelpalmisano
