"What's wrong with this boy?" Um, the short version is that he's a genuinely a good person that constantly got punished for doing what's right, which lead to a moral compass that's spinning like a twister. That combined with teenage angst as well as major self-esteem issues brought upon by physical and mental abuse from his father and his younger sister (I just felt the need to preface "younger" because I honestly kept forgetting that Zuko's older than Azula; he's the first-born, he's the crown prince, but Azula is clearly the favorite).
This is a really good summary of why Zuko's such a good, interesting, sympathetic character. We want to root for him because we see he's more a victim of his upbringing than anything. Considering his own father scarred him just for speaking up on behalf of their soldiers, it's hard to blame Zuko for being the way he is. In a way, Zuko's story unfortunately happens to plenty of people in real life to varying degrees.
I'm glad they didnt have toph teach Aang like katara. Aside from the fact that Aang needed to starting thinking like an earthbender,I do think it's good that he has someone that's blunt and strict on him. He is a really nice person but having toph as a teacher can also help him accept blunt truth and criticism, cuz not everyone he meets is going to treat him nice or gentle, and with toph's attitude it could harden him more as a person. I love how he has a gentle teacher like katara and a strict teacher like toph, it really balances right.
Yeah. And now that I watch this again, even though Aang is suppose to be twelve, Katara does kinda come off as babying Aang. Even in the early seasons.
It nice how the show starts with air (the most gentle element) and goes to water then earth then ends with fire (the most aggressive element). Aang becomes more offensive with each season

iroh's speech about the four elements and their inherent natures is probably some of my favorite dialogue in all of atla. it really was the clear alert to the audience that made Bending go from a cool magic system to a meaningful, spiritual, and philosophical force that affected their universe. it's just so so so so good
Especially when we see later in the show how several times we see other characters use other bending styles in their own bending. Ex. Katara standing her ground against hama
Zuko: For you see, Azula, you aren't dealing with the average firebending swordsman anymore. Azula: Oh, here we go... Zuko: I have risen above, and become a legend.
Lmaooooooo what makes it soooooo funny is that the zuko moment is dead like kratos yelling at Zeus in the heavens and vegeta when he went super saiyan in the rain Lmaooooooo
12:05 "He's having a Vegeta moment". You said it as a joke, but I always assumed this was a direct homage to that scene (or at least heavily inspired by it). I mean, the Avatar creators are obviously big anime fans, it wouldn't be the first reference the show has done. Does anyone know if the creators have confirmed/denied this connection?
I mean, considering the episode where Aang faces Ozai in his dream literally dressed as Goku, haircut and all, I'd say yea there's probably a shit ton of hidden references everywhere in this show.
This is the first time Aang earthbends outside of the Avatar State. When Toph was using Aang's staff as a nut cracker to get him to fight back, Aang claimed that it was a "delicate instrument" and an "antique handcrafted by the monks". Despite this, Aang has been seen using his staff for much more demanding tasks, such as when he used it to break a metal chain he had frozen in ice. This is the third episode in which Zuko cries. While talking about airbenders, Iroh says, "Also apparently they had pretty good senses of humor." This is exemplified by Gyatso who is seen pulling pranks on others twice: first in "The Southern Air Temple" when Gyatso and Aang shot cakes at meditating Air Nomads, and second in "The Storm" when Gyatso airbent Aang's hood over his eyes and swaps the places of Pai Sho pieces during their game. The title refers to both Aang training with earthbending, and Zuko training with lightning. Due to their natures, it is very hard for both of them. The term Sifu used by Aang to greet Toph and later Katara is a Cantonese word meaning "teacher" or "master".
but i feel like aang would be able to cushion any "smashing" done by his staff w air. whereas toph's usage probably has solid impact. i think this bc of the philosophies tied to each element, respectively. ie. earth bending: stubbornness, strength, endurance, "like a rock". air bending: avoidance, flowing w the path of least resistance, "element of freedom".
What I find incredibly hurtful is Zuko yells at the sky to be struck down. Whats even nuts you can see him as yelling at life destiny or even God. And at this point he was not ready to redirect that lightning and everyone who watches this show can see that. And the point where he cries here is so heartbreaking because he has had such a rough life he is at this point where he realizes what he is asking for in looking for that lightning. Had it struck he would have died. In a way he is basically screaming for death yelling at that sky.

At this point in the story, he's the only one out of himself, Ozai, Zuko, and Azula that learned the true nature of firebending through the breath and not through anger and hate so it's only natural that it would be stronger than it was before
Remember in the very first episode he said firebending comes from the breath not the muscles. Like boxing, you breathe out after every power punch is thrown
If you notice, the show constantly puts Aang and Zuko in parallel. With the "storm" episode (parallel backstory episode) and now parallel training episode. Superb storytelling that makes more sense in later episodes.
3:50 Iroh saying the truth about Azula is a great moment. :) 5:31 I like huge the lighting that Iroh creates is. 7:29 The talk about the elements is great. 12:00 Zuko falls on his knees... and then... the lighting hits him :D

Roku refers to his training in the element opposite to his own as "bitter work", though the phrase is never actually uttered in this episode, despite its title.
Actually impressed that Shera noticed why Earthbending was so difficult for Aang and why Waterbending was so natural to him. A lot of first time watchers don't notice that connection
The contrast between Katara and Toph's teaching approach is fantastic. One is that of gentleness and positive reinforcement whereas the other is more of a tough love and no-nonsense approach. Both are valid teaching approaches imo. As for Katara kind of interfering at times, I can understand it. She not only knows Aang best, but she also has the most teaching experience out of everyone there, so it makes sense that she would try to help out and make sure things run smoothly. Iroh's lecture was a fantastic way to flesh out the different philosophies and people behind each element and nation! I also loved how that related with what Aang was going through, having to deal with his natural opposite. As we learned with Iroh, it has to do with differing philosophies and ways of thinking or approaching a situation. Aang in this case has always avoided confrontation whenever possible. Bumi back in S1 even said the typical airbending tactic was "avoiding and evading", so Aang is of course stuck with that mindset of avoiding things or finding ways around a problem as opposed to standing firm and facing things head on. Because of that, he was going to have a difficult time with earthbending as opposed to waterbending. What I find amazing is how with his personality and mindset having been established at the start of the show, this obstacle in his training was developed organically!
What's interesting is that later in the season we learn that the Earth chakra deals with survival and is blocked by fear. It makes so much sense now that Aang had such a hard time with Earthbending: his fear of conflict was probably straight up blocking his ability to properly Earthbend.
When Aang and Toph wake up Sokka and get babbled at in gibberish there is a small part that Sokka says that sounds like "I'm talking and using words!" In an Avatar Spirit interview, Sifu Kisu refers to martial arts training in the old-school Chinese tradition as "bitter work".
I don’t know if this was mentioned in an earlier video, but what you said about toph talking about real martial arts made me remember. The creators of the show referenced real martial arts for each of the bending elements and it shows well in a lot of the fight scenes.
fun fact, each style of bending is based off/inspired by a specific style of of martial arts. water bending is taichi, earth bending is hung gar, fire bendering is Northern Shaolin , and air bendering is Bagua. and because tophs bending is so unique/to differentiate her bending from other earth benders her bending is primarily based of southern praying mantis, which is a martial art believed to be created by blind people.
This episode also makes me wonder how and when Iroh was able to study waterbenders... he demonstrated this redirecting lightning ability in “the storm” which was before “the siege of the north,” so when during the 100 year war was he allowed, as brother of the Fire lord, to visit with and study waterbenders? Or was it just studying them as he attacked sometime when he was a general?
these are the only people that can make me laugh at sad scenes I always though zuko's random emo lines were sort of funny but they made it waay better lmao
Wait... Zuko is *literally* a prince to a violent regime... and he undergoes a character arc as well as having daddy issues... Shit, boy really is Vegeta
I just stumbled across your channel, and you guys are such a blast to watch! So hilarious and insightful - I'm excited to continue watching your Avatar journey. This is one of my favorite shows, and I feel like I'm watching it for the first time all over again with you guys!
I love this episode because Iroh basically broke it down and showed zuko that just because you can only bend one element. You can use different forms and movements to help your bending out and create your own style. The rock stance of an earth bender, The motion of a water bender and the spiritual thinking of an air bender. Later on you guys will see what Iroh was talking about if you pay attention to each characters bending movement especially Zuko's.
Love the "It's just like martial arts!" remark, cause each element's bending techniques are based off of actual real-world martial arts disciplines. There are even some extra influences thrown in, like Toph's signature style differing from the "standard" earth bender having influences thrown in from a martial art that was iirc actually developed for visuall impaired people. The makers of this show really did their homework.
Bruh I laughed my ass off when zuko said "It just blows up in my face, like everything always does." I mean it's sad but it's also hilarious because poor dude ain't wrong. Felt bad for him when he cried at the end, he needs some love and encouragement in the right direction.
Interesting fact about lightning: It is plasma (ionized gas) without heat--until it's released, of course. Which means that to produce it, a firebender must ionize the air *without* applying heat. That does not come easy to a firebender, and is why separating the ions requires complete focus. In addition to ionizing the air without heat, the firebender must pay attention to the weight of the air. Positive charges are lighter than negative charges. Their natural drift according to their weight must be allowed to happen. There's actually a lot of math and science that the firebender's brain is subconsciously running through when generating lightning. If that process gets derailed at all, the firebender will end up blowing up their would-be bolt of plasma in their own face. Because lightning bending is more akin to airbending than firebending, requires the same grounding that earthbending does, and involves smooth, fluid motions and control over the flow of one's chi like waterbending does, it's important for the firebender to understand how each of those other elements comes into play when generating lightning. That's why Iroh taught Zuko about the other elements before teaching him lightning redirection.
Just binged y'all watching ATLA and was frantically searching for B2E10, just realized I'm caught up! Now I'm the Show Hole, waiting for your next drop. We have watched ATLA and Korra several times over, and my kid put me on to your channel. I love watching you love the show like we did our first time through. I love that you appreciate the minute and impressive details the artists put into the animation. I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but each bending style is modeled after a different school of real-world martial arts. There are various sifu consultants in the credits. Amazing effort and energy went into the production of this show. It is the best. And it only gets better.
I feel so sad for the two guys watching this because they haven't had the experience zuko has. Zuko is asking for justice to be delivered to him by the lightning striking him. When it doesn't do as he wants, he realizes that he is not at fault for what happened to him. His scar, his happiness, nothing was his fault. He still believed he was not worthy of love hence wanting him to be punished by the lightning just as his father with his eye.
I've seen the show tens of times, but I always like seeing people experience this show for the first time. You guys have dope personalities and make it funny as well!
Each element is a different form of martial arts. The creators really did research on this stuff and gave each element a different style based of a real form of fighting.
well, aangs struggle in earth bending has more to it. the main reason, is that every avatar struggled with the element opposite of theirs. some examples of this, are avatar roku(Firebender) struggling with water bending, and avatar kyoshi (Earth bender) struggling with air bending. hope that helped :)
"What is wrong with this kid?" I dunno, it's not like he wasn't loved by his father, scarred by his father and banished by his father AT THE AGE OF FUCKING 13. Oh well, I really don't know
what iroh was teaching zuko is balance even past the lightning things being balance as far as the nations natural and the spirits and energy. All things need to naturally fall into place. Bringing strength from other places.

Remember in the very first episode he said firebending comes from the breath not the muscles. Like boxing, you breathe out after every power punch is thrown
He is the strongest fire bender. He was supposed to be fire lord but didn't want to after his son died
During a rewatch of this episode, I noticed that Zuko's burned eye didn't cry. His pop is a real piece of crap...
If you notice, the show constantly puts Aang and Zuko in parallel. With the "storm" episode (parallel backstory episode) and now parallel training episode. Superb storytelling that makes more sense in later episodes.
3:50 Iroh saying the truth about Azula is a great moment. :)
5:31 I like huge the lighting that Iroh creates is.
7:29 The talk about the elements is great.
12:00 Zuko falls on his knees... and then... the lighting hits him :D
I can not with y’all 😂😂😂 “it keeps on blowing up in my face like everything always does “ serious moment turns into a laughing moment 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I love y’all fam I hope the lil one is ok roshi
マコちゃん ?
I die when Lupasan said Zuko having a Vegeta moment 🤣
Roku refers to his training in the element opposite to his own as "bitter work", though the phrase is never actually uttered in this episode, despite its title.
12:00 And then, zuko threw himself from the high peak of the earth kingdom, for he had realized he wasnt as hot shit as his sister.
6:37 glad someone else found that line as funny as i did. he just sounds sm like a little kid its adorable and hilarious
"Yeah cuz... Lightning is 100% fire"
Wait til you get to the part in your science textbook about Benjamin Franklin and his kite, it's gonna be lit 👌
Actually impressed that Shera noticed why Earthbending was so difficult for Aang and why Waterbending was so natural to him. A lot of first time watchers don't notice that connection
"you never held back before!" the way he says that is just so... ill never forget that line. just like "hello, zuko here."
This episode was such an eye opener for Zuko in the end since it featured an act of SUICIDE between him and the lightning. Underrated moment🙏🏽
I love those bits where the moment one of y'all dies it just zooms in on whoever just bursts laughing 😂
Especially since even when toph was doing positive reinforcement she did it in her own way
What's interesting is that later in the season we learn that the Earth chakra deals with survival and is blocked by fear.
It makes so much sense now that Aang had such a hard time with Earthbending: his fear of conflict was probably straight up blocking his ability to properly Earthbend.
When Aang and Toph wake up Sokka and get babbled at in gibberish there is a small part that Sokka says that sounds like "I'm talking and using words!"
In an Avatar Spirit interview, Sifu Kisu refers to martial arts training in the old-school Chinese tradition as "bitter work".
I'm mean can you blame zuko he's scared both mentally and literally also we need more iroh right noe
I don’t know if this was mentioned in an earlier video, but what you said about toph talking about real martial arts made me remember. The creators of the show referenced real martial arts for each of the bending elements and it shows well in a lot of the fight scenes.
Zukor while in the rain storm: "zeus!!!! Is this how u face me coward!!!!"
Just in case, Toph didn't feel his heartbeat last time, she just noticed it was the man that gave her tea.
fun fact, each style of bending is based off/inspired by a specific style of of martial arts. water bending is taichi, earth bending is hung gar, fire bendering is Northern Shaolin , and air bendering is Bagua. and because tophs bending is so unique/to differentiate her bending from other earth benders her bending is primarily based of southern praying mantis, which is a martial art believed to be created by blind people.
I need y’all as friends. “HAHAHAHAHA THATS SO SAD HAHAHAHAHA.” My kinda energy lol.
Or was it just studying them as he attacked sometime when he was a general?
these are the only people that can make me laugh at sad scenes
I always though zuko's random emo lines were sort of funny but they made it waay better lmao
Wait... Zuko is *literally* a prince to a violent regime... and he undergoes a character arc as well as having daddy issues...
Shit, boy really is Vegeta
Can I just take a minute to say that this intro goes haaaaaaaard
I cant breathe when zuko had that sad tone in his voice I’m dying
Bruh I laughed my ass off when zuko said "It just blows up in my face, like everything always does." I mean it's sad but it's also hilarious because poor dude ain't wrong. Felt bad for him when he cried at the end, he needs some love and encouragement in the right direction.
"Like everything always does"
*explodes out laughing*
Opened youtube and was pleasantly surprised to see you uploaded. My notification didn't even pop up yet
Iroh was basically saying “it is better to know how to redirect lighting and not need to THAN to not know how and need to.”
"IT SOUNDS SO SAD" then proceed to laugh so hard
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
11:55 that clasic moment when you ask for your death
12:27 Thats a real good vegeta impression
Facts
6:45 WHAT TURMOIL?! Killed me 😂
Zuko looking at the lightning in the sky...
SMITE ME OH MIGHTY SMITER! 😃😃😃
Watching you guys reacting to ATLA makes me realize how many funny moments are in it that I may have overlooked lol.
LOL you guys are by far my favorite group of reactors. and i love the analysis/breakdown too! Love from NYC!
"Put the tip..." Um.. He's 12. She's 13. Let's avoid that basket of ew all together.
he's 112 and she's 15.
gato23 shes 14 and hes 112
1:39 "this might be it" remember that he thought he was going to fight all three of them at the time
An embarrassing moment of mine is when I first watched avatar I genuinely tried to water bend
“I am ZUKO. PRINCE OF ALL FIREBENDERS!” 🤣👏🏾
I like the fact that you can tell how much time passed by Zuko hair
Y'all have the best Avatar reactions I've seen. I'm loving re-living the series with y'all. Keep up the great work!
This moment 12:01 is literally like Vegeta standing in the rain, I'm so glad he called it out!
Each element is a different form of martial arts. The creators really did research on this stuff and gave each element a different style based of a real form of fighting.
End of the episode: *Azula voice in Zuko's head* "Tell me brother, whats it like to feel this kind of pain? to work so hard for so little?"
well, aangs struggle in earth bending has more to it. the main reason, is that every avatar struggled with the element opposite of theirs. some examples of this, are avatar roku(Firebender) struggling with water bending, and avatar kyoshi (Earth bender) struggling with air bending. hope that helped :)
I feel like Zuko's failed attempts at lightning bending with the explosions could have been a pretty badass technique if developed more
"What is wrong with this kid?"
I dunno, it's not like he wasn't loved by his father, scarred by his father and banished by his father AT THE AGE OF FUCKING 13. Oh well, I really don't know
"We haven't seen enough of his abilities"
"We've seen him make tea" bruh you ain't seen nuthin bout his tea bending yet.
Most People: Wow, I feel sorry for Zuko there.
AGoodwinTV: ~insert profound observation here~
YaBoyRoshi: Lol waaats wrong with Zuko
Huge respect for the intro, one of the best I've seen so far 👏🔥
The rock: I am the most electrifying Man
Ihro : Hold my lightning
YO i am killing for more here! You guys have the BEST reactions ever!! I cant wait for your next one!!!!
what iroh was teaching zuko is balance even past the lightning things being balance as far as the nations natural and the spirits and energy. All things need to naturally fall into place. Bringing strength from other places.
Ngl, yelling at the sky during a storm like Zuko did is literally how Vegeta unlocked Super Saiyan 😂
