    Slytherins seem to get the worst reputation out of all the houses for being "evil" or "corrupt", or just plain misunderstood. Nearly all of the deatheaters depicted in the franchise are from Slytherin, and when J.K. Rowling realized that she hadn't shown any likable Slytherins, she created Slughorn as an example of a sympathetic person from that house. Slytherins, much like Ravenclaws, are intelligent, they're just more crafty and ambitious about their smarts, and won't hesitate to look for ways to achieve their goals. Plus, thank you for pointing out them losing out to Gryffindor for the House Cup, which I always thought was unfair as a kid!💚🐍

    • @BucketThinkTank14657Nerd
      @BucketThinkTank14657Nerd 6 лет назад +149

      Because it was unfair. They all got points for stuff none of the students (even Gryffindor) knew anything about. Hell, Neville got points just they could win. It's not enough that they saved the world, they have to win the House Cup that Slytherin worked hard to get.

    • @trinaq
      @trinaq 6 лет назад +118

      Bucket Think Tank Gryffindor and Slytherin were pitted against each other from the get go. The fact that Dumbledore even openly encouraged the antagonism, and that they were seen as "heroic" and "evil" respectively, just struck me as a low point.

    • @maem7462
      @maem7462 6 лет назад +84

      Caitriona Quigley I'm a Hufflepuff and I agree that Slytherins do get horrible reputations which shouldn't happen because I know a few Slytherins who are very nice. For some reason Hufflepuffs have gotten mad fun of a lot and Ravenclaws sadly barely get acknowledged. The Gryffindors winning the house cup was so unfair because they won by breaking all the rules and just being brave which is their houses main quality when no other house get extra points for doing something where they used their main quality of the house. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't someone from Gryffindor get points for being loyal which is a Hufflepuff quality. It is a little but if a Gryffindor quality but it's mainly one for Hufflepuff

    • @trinaq
      @trinaq 6 лет назад +64

      Mae Mitchum I totally concur. Both Slytherins and Hufflepuffs seem to get the short end of the stick both in and out of story for different reasons. Slytherins are usually typecast as being manipulative and self-serving, but many of the Slytherins I know demonstrate its more positive qualities, such as determination and resourcefulness. By contrast, Hufflepuffs are ridiculed because because they're seen as "generic" and are very rarely given time to shine in plots. In fact, their sole moment of glory comes about when Cedric Diggory is selected as a champion for the Triwizard Tournament, which is then overshadowed by Harry's name being entered into the goblet. At least Ravenclaws are given a bit more focus. It always seemed that we were "supposed" to root for the Gryffindors on top of any other house.

      Ummm...the books are written from Harry's POV. And in many cases he has to admit he was wrong, like with his impression of Neville, Hermione, Draco, Luna and Cedric. But if you read carefully you'll realize Harry is pretty judgemental and misses so much stuff.
      And Dumbledore's great shows on Harry's behalf are not as pure as Harry believes. It becomes obvious even in the very first book that Dumbledore is manipulating Harry to shape him into a character that has the certain quality he considers necessary, but he doesn't train him like you would a hero. Dumbledore is many things, but he certainly isn't kind. And Harry believes him to be kind for far too long. Good, yes, but not kind. Why else would a great, wise wizard actively get an entire school house to hate a small boy, using a stupid 'housecup' win reversal that doesn't give any real benefits and noone really cares about?
      The books are written from an unreliable narrator's POV and to the careful reader a lot of things seem highly questionable from the start.

    • @suranjanad3861
      @suranjanad3861 3 года назад +4

      The stories are told from Harry's POV, so obviously whatever he thinks about things is how it will be portrayed. Slytherin House is a perfect example of this: Harry absolutely detests most Slytherins which is why they are always shown to be rude, mean, and bullies.

      Actually, the school was founded before the actual which hunts, as the Catholic Church was trying to convince the public that magic did not exist at all, and was mere "pagan superstition"
      The which hunts didn't go into full swing until the 1500s, and for a long time only black magic (magic that did harm) could get you arrested and killed...unless your healing spell failed, and then you were accused of killing the person while faking trying to heal them. That would also do it.
      There were many forms of magic that were popular with the upper class during the Medeival Renaissance period, as well, such as alchemy and "natural" magic. Not to mention all the spells disguised as prayers by inserting Jesus Christ's name into them.
      Honestly, if Harry Potter didn't have the word "which" in it, very few would have made a fuss about this series.

    • @jessaminesguerra3369
      @jessaminesguerra3369 2 года назад +1

      @@Goikuchan true that. Its better to be prepared or cautious when it comes to those who feared the unknown that they'll easily kill you. Even I'll admit that wizarding haven't change much that the muggles became advance. Its only logic what can happen when you calculate every possibility from happening.
      Not that I am against muggleborns nor half-blood but danger is not something taken lightly if you can count the wizarding numbers that they are lacking while muggles are billions with war weapons capable to destroy any spell shield. To be fair,I may be placed in ravenclaw and on occasion on slytherin but overall I am neutral and more likely be preparing the possibility of war from breaking in case,,,afterall I saw value using every advantage and logic of everything even using dark arts,light magic or even weaponry in case wands are not useful when weapons are guns being pointed at you lightning fast in shot. Hell! I rather be prepared enough even to train wandless magic in advance just for precaution.
      Afterall,if you were to choose:Morality by hesitating using all advantage you can get or death and possible torture from muggles which can be more gruesome then a simple crucio. Avada kedavra is simple death but what if you are surrounded or imperio is useless when against those who have strong will for a muggle let alone again being surrounded,,,,thats why,why not train using weaponry too justttt to be prepare.

    It should be noted that ALL Hogwarts Founders were selective about the students admitted to the School and all wanted to welcome students of certain traits before others- it was not only Slytherin. In fact, you could argue that both Slytherin and Hufflepuff were more reasonable than the other two Founders in their philosophies of student selection: Hufflepuff was not selective at all, she believed all should be given equal right to study magic, whereas Slytherin was the most pragmatic one- he did not want to invite people who were persecuting wizards and witches to the School and risk possible bloodshed. From Slytherin perspective, it could be argued that putting a huge monster below the School was a safety measure and that Salazar deeply believed a day will come when all wizards and witches will be grateful for his foresight.
    Now, it is easy to demonise Slytherin. The vast majority of people will see the Founder and his House as personification of racism, bigotry, intolerance, reluctance to change, power hunger. And it is not hard to see why this is the case, as almost every Slytherin in the books was a morally ambiguous character. I think, however, that the original purpose of the House was different and to understand it one needs to think of the historical context in which the House was founded.

      @Mo'mina Makin Considering Hogwarts was founded in 990 AD in a Western society when having magic would either cause you to be murdered for devil worship or crowned a saint. However Harry Potter took place almost 2000 years in the future. Obviously things changed. At the time, Salazar had a point by wishing to be pragmatic, but times changed and we no longer have church-sanctioned beheading.

    • @candescence
      @candescence 4 года назад +58

      @Mo'mina Makin a muggleborn generally doesn't come isolated. They have muggle family, muggle friends, and they are likely to return to muggle society. This opens up the risk of discovery because how on earth are you going to hide magic from those you live with. Another problem would be the anti magic beliefs that muggleborn may already have. You could have muggleborns working against magicals because they believe its the right thing or that it would redeem them from evil. Letting dangerous elements into a sanctuary for magical children can reasonably be seen as a threat.

I mean, in what world would good people use "pureblood" as a dorm password when current events around racism were what they were), but my thoughts are that Harry's generation of Slytherins were corrupted by Voldemort and their racist families. I'm sure that during other periods in history, Slytherins were (hypothetically) just as moral as anyone else.
      I guess I wouldn't know, but I've never actually heard anyone who's not 12 seriously suggest that IRL people who get sorted into Slytherin on Pottermore are actually evil. • @LadyLilith1015
      @LadyLilith1015 6 лет назад +45

      Yes, she does have Gryffindor traits too. But she IS adaptable. Her sigil is a three headed dragon. Dragons are close relatives to snakes, but more powerful and fire-oriented. She was sold as a slave to a barbaric lord, and she learnt his culture and how to become stronger. She adapts to her circumstances, and knows how to gain people's support. She is quick-temper, but she is also quite logical and listens her counselours. She fooled the masters of Astapor, and she uses any harsh means to get the Iron Throne. She takes tough decissions that are necessary.
      I don't see her as Gryffindor because her role of the story is mostly about her ambitions; not her heroic acts. She's not power hungry as Cersei or Littlefinger, but she herself represents Power.
      Perhaps she is like Jaime, she either could be on Gryffindor or Slytherin. But I preffer her as Slytherin, because she wouldn't be your stereotypical Slytherin :D.

    I don't think you can associate Slytherin's Green and Silver with money. Rowling herself is a Brit and the colours of their bank notes vary, only the 5 pound one is green. I myself am from Germany, our currency is Euros which also differ in colour of bank notes, only the 100€ note is green. So the Slytherin Colours--> money comparison only works for the USA and doesn't seem like a valid interpretation for me.

However, my two other Ravenclaw friends did not finish school, but went onto to build their own businesses, entrepreneur style. I think the core of Ravenclaw is that they are defined by their minds. For a lot of them, this means studying and thinking. But for others, this is about thinking differently; being creative and imaginative, and seeing what others have missed.

    I love your videos, but you said potions was “Snape’s subject of choice” when in fact this is Defence Against the Dark Arts. And I think this oversight misses an important analytical point. That Snape is forced to work in potions (a symbol of Slytherin and secrecy and cunning) when really craves a role that would fight against dark forces such as Voldemort, symbolising the inner struggle he has, as well as redefining Dumbledores saying that “sometimes I think we sort too early”, as snape has been forced into this Slytherin role when really what he craved was elsewhere, fighting good and out of his reach. Just thought I’d point it out

      Although one could also theorise that he was kept from DATDA because Dumbledore didn't want him tempted by it, as indeed Harry and co does in the books. Voldemort himself also aspired to that job, which was in no way accidental, it was the closest he could get to his passion in Hogwarts within the restrictions the school poses. It is, after all, stated that Snape has always wanted that job, and one could assume that included his time as a deatheater.

    • @2cleverbyhalf
      @2cleverbyhalf 6 лет назад +146

      Because they are a symbol of eugenics. They believe that only superior people can achieve great things. In South Africa they were so determined to keep the idea that racial mixing was contrary to nature that they would take biracial children from their parents and adopt them out so that no one would see the evidence of racial mixing. Basically, they wanted to deny the existence of biracial people to keep the racial order.
      People who are convinced that they are superior will go through loops to keep that lie a communal reality. We see evidence of that in the USA currently.

      I suppose there's some inclination of naturally inherited power when a bloodline is pure, or something like that. So keeping a pure bloodline would assure success for you and your family, and the ambitions you may have.

    I completely agree with everything in this video. Except the thing about Snape's class of choice being Potions. By no means did he have a problem with teaching it but he *really* wanted the Defense Against the Dark Arts position. He spent the entire book series fighting to fill a position he was extremely qualified for (in many different ways we find out) by people like Lockheart, Quirrell, and Crouch Jr . Jeez, talk about feeling inferior.
    Slytherin's were the easy villians. Even when other houses are seen to have bullies (James and Sirius to Snape) we are given ample time to sympathize with there reasons and their goodness so forgiving their "childish" behavior as being morally grey (Sirius) is easy because they did so much good. Meanwhile, Slytherin is the opposite. The books (and movie) spend so much time showing us Slytherin is evil that by the time it comes out that some are merely grey people hold on to that hate.

    Green is also the color of nature and healing. Healing means creating potions and needs complex thinking and mastery. Green is used in hospitals by doctors and nurses.
    Silver is an elegant color, it's the color of the night, the Moon and the stars. It opposites with the arrogant gold that tries to overshine everything.
    Green and silver is also used in many movies and animated series for spirits and passed away souls. You can put it that way: life after death. Like in Harry Potter series, all ghosts have silver color. So do unicorns who are untouchable.

    Proud SLytherin here! One quality of the green and silver that seems to be overlooked is that we are the dreamers. Ambition is so often understated with this house that it's easy to forget that we are goal oriented and always looking for the next big project to help bring to light. As long as you don't forget our names and contributions. The theme song from Degrassi: The Next Generation has the line "Whatever it takes, I know I can make it through." and the first character in the show to say this line is Manny Santos, a girl who definitly would be sorted into Slytherin. She is driven, goal oriented, knows what she wants and isn't afraid to sacrifice to get it. She makes mistakes mind you but she rarely lets that keep her down for very long. Her goal as of the end of her run on the show is to become an actress. A job that a lot of real life Slytherins find themselves going into. WE love the arts, the ability to control the narrative or to create our own. Just look at two of our famous real life members, Lin Manuel Miranda and Ariana Grande

    On Pottermore I got Slytherin which at first I thought WTF, and I did a online test prior to Pottermore and three after, all of which I was told that I'm a Ravenclaw, but after seeing this I think Slytherin is a little more of a person I am where Ravenclaw is more the person I wanna be and with that in mind, many characters in the series seem to be a mix of two houses with characteristics of Slytherin and Gryffindor have some characteristics similar to each other, and are just different sides of the same coin of how they think and act.

    You should’ve mentioned the rainbow serpent in Aboriginal mythology. That snake is a very well known god to the Native Australians, which means Slytherins are very great and powerful leaders.
    I may be a Gryffindor, but Slytherin is actually my favorite house in many ways.

    Draco was the 1 smiling while Ron was the 1 frowning when they 1st get to the school. Draco did and said nothing wrong. aristocratically politely introduced his friends then himself to Harry and Ron. Draco already knew Ron was a Weasley. Ron started the hostility when he made fun of Draco's name. Harry escalated the hostility when he failed to correct Ron's bad behavior and snubbed Draco. Ron lied when he said that every witch or wizard who went bad was in Slytherin. HogWarts was not the only magic school. The Malfoy may be douchebags but both the Potters and the Wealeys together are even worse than even the Malfoys.

    "Slytherin have both darkness and the CAPACITY for light inside them" from the Gryffindor video where alot of the critics that all the houses said were portrait as just from Slytherin I had a hint, but this video seens... biased? Not saying that was intentional, but you girls ironically do the same villanization that the video talks about. Missed some crucial points about context that would explain better Salazar's motivations (as someone else pointed out, Dumbledore's sister is a good example of why he was trying to avoid muggles next to the wizards), talk about duality while ignoring how Slytherin element is water, the symbol of adaptation and cure, how Pottermore describe their room as sofiscated, luxurious and with literally a hall of fame to celebrate the greatest wizards (like Merlin himself) that came from there. I know you said that another video will talk about the good side but honestly would be so much better just not go over and over of how "Slytherin characters are kinda bad but don't need to be"; some parts like the snake overall symbolism were really great less the "btw folks, Griffyndor can be associated with Jesus". lol
    Grindelwald is not even from Hogwarts, no idea why he was mentioned here per example.

    snakes are also associated with being cthonic, aka born from the ground. this kind of birth is more "pure," but also indicates reaching your potential without help from anyone else

    I’m so happy for this video! I’m creating a pantheon where I purposefully mess with tropes and general expectations, and a solid positive personification of the snake was my first symbol! Change and rebirth, working as intelligently for your aims as possible. I’m still working on it and need more symbols and figures to upend, but I was so happy to see it mentioned here! Can’t wait for the last two!

    i remember all my friends at school shrieking in disgust when me and a couple of other students said we were slytherins. despite this, we were very proud to be slytherins and never let other people tell us that we must be “evil” if we are in draco’s house. it seems that only we slytherins know and appreciate the more positive attributes of the house, so thanks for this vid 💚🐍

    I took a copy of the test multiple times and came up ravenclaw, took the official pottermore test once came up Slytherin, and some of my strongest traits aside from Slytherin was Hufflepuff. I have a drive for self excellence in what I pursue, love to strategize, take things one step at a time, yet deliberately bending rules to my advantage. I also am the person to say and believe that EVERYONE has skill and potential all people need is a little nudge and the proper patient guidance.

    I loved the video and I’m so glad you talked about slytherins being immediately villainized and in the end always rising above their toxic environments. That’s what I most related to.
    My one thing is yes it became racial after he fact but Salazar wanted pure bloods because wizards were being persecuted. Especially wizard children. There’s a reason a law was implemented for wizards to not be seen by muggles (International Statute of Secrecy). This might be in your second video though so I’d look forward to seeing it.

    If one has ever read Joseph Cambell, you may be familiar with the fact that the serpent in Genisis is the symbol for life, as it is responsible for the acts that create the cycle of life, therefore Slytherin’s snake represents the life within us: and therefore their traits are what bring life.

    im a slytherin myself, but lets face it- slytherins are the villains house, becouse rowling needed an enemy to gryffindors and, in the fashion of group vs group storytelling, made one perfect and other evil

    Thank you so much for posting this video, I know it’s silly to get worked up over but the last couple years I’ve started to feel like I didn’t really belong in Slytherin anymore because my personality changed so drastically after a few incidents/experiences. I’ve actually been scared to take sorting quizzes because I don’t want them to change from Slytherin. But a lot of the things you said fit in with me before and now, despite my occasional lack of impulse control and laziness I’m still very Slytherin in the way I think, feel and do things compared to other houses. I’ve been having a bit of an identity crisis due to the changes in myself and my life but this makes me feel a bit better. Again, it’s ridiculous and childish, but thank you
