The reason Slytherin is so hated is because Harry's perspective is super biased because his first wizard friend, Ron Weasley, hates Slytherin along with the rest of his family.

You know who's a good example of a
      HEALTHY SLYTHERIN?
Hiro Okumura - from 'Isekai Word Cheat', the Manga.
He likes Books a lot, so you think first of Ravenclaw, but then
you realize that: no, he's actually a Slytherin.
      A very, very healthy one.
He's always thinking of his own benefit,
but in a very healthy way, that is rather hard to describe.
He's affecting everyone, but not manipulating anyone,
if you get what i mean.
He's also teaching people being polite - in a very rude manner though (lol)...

Oh, it gets even worse. Not only are Slytherins judged unfairly based on the actions of a few of their predecessors, but the current students in the books are set up to fail!
Think about this scenario for a moment: You're 11 years old, you're a very ambitious and resourceful person and you've been sorted into Slytherin house. Because of your natural ambition it's basically a given that you would be highly motivated by a friendly inter-house competition like the House Cup. You work hard all year to earn points and make your house proud, and at the end of the year you've done it! You and your housemates have won the House Cup and stand to be rewarded at the closing feast. The Great Hall is bedecked in beautiful silver and green; you and your mates are laughing and celebrating your hard work and achievement.
But then old professor Albus Favoritism gets up to give his speech, and while you think you are about to officially receive the award you've worked so hard for the tone very quickly changes as the headmaster announces that he has some "last minute points to award". You listen in stunned shock that slowly turns to horror as he methodically hands the award to your rival house and that pretty boy Potter who everyone's obsessed with. "I believe that a change of decoration is in order," the headmaster quips, before waving his wand and transforming your house banners into Gryffindor ones. The Gryffindors celebrate this act of pure injustice as you and your friends slump in your chairs having been publicly humiliated by the head of the school on the last day of the year.
And why did the Potter gang get all these points, you ask? Over the coming days the story makes it to you, how they broke dozens if not hundreds of school rules, put their lives and the lives of others in mortal peril, and presented to the Dark Lord himself the only means he could possibly have of achieving his goal in infiltrating the school. For this they are lauded as heroes, and you get nothing for a year of good behavior.
You decide then that if everyone is going to treat you like the villain anyway, why not be one? Gryffindor hubris created Draco Malfoy as much as any other factor.

Also Griffindor literally lost 150 points(while Slytherin 50) in one night.
And it should've been expected that they either lost or received points for their final act.
      On a side note, I've read that while Gryffindors and Ravenclaws usually make friends: Huffelpuffs that usually look past preconceptions, often make friends with Slytherins;

I would like to point something out about Salazar Slytherin that not many have considered:
Hogwarts was built 990 AD. Let us go on a journey if you will, to what muggles were doing at this time.
Between 49 AD and 409/ 410 AD Rome than Holy Roman Emperor ruled great Britain bringing with it Christianity and subsequently the dark ages (which spanned 500 to 1000 AD). This time was turbulent at best; with frequent warfare but more specifically the fear of witches.
In a post by Rowling, she said that before Hogwarts most witches and wizards were home schooled because their magic was so out of control it would give them away. The founders of Hogwarts wanted somewhere SAFE to practice. It can be deduced that during this time muggles were not the (mostly) open minded, tolerant individuals they are today. This also is before a lot innovations are made regarding spells, potions and charms since what the witches and wizards were learning was specific to what the magical family was specialized in. So they did not have the Freezing Flame charm until after Hogwarts but still during the Dark ages. Even so things were very dangerous for wizards and witches.
This is why Salazar was so adamant about not have muggle borns attend the school. It was too dangerous for the rest of the students. He felt so strongly about the safety of the students he did try to manipulate the others for what he deemed as the greater good. When he left the basilisk, he left it dormant, just in case muggles were to find the school and attack the students. It was a safe guard that could only be activated by one of his descendants that he thought would use it responsibly.
Unfortunately logical fear -> irrational fear -> hate -> prejudice -> racism among the slytherins.
But this is just a theory from a Ravenclaw. Let me know what you think.

Also there is a general distaste for muggles by most wizards, including a lot of the main adult characters with the exception of Arthur Weasley, Dumbledore (at this point), and obviously the teacher for muggle studies. If you listen to the way they say muggles it is always in an exasperated, unsavory tone.
They may accept wizards and witches born from muggles but they don't really accept muggles themselves.

    • @chasm671
      @chasm671 8 лет назад +116

+Keira Rush That's true, though I would say that even Arthur Weasley shows "positive racism". The way he talks to Hermione's parents for example, it's as if he's watching monkeys performing tricks and trying to act human. (Huh, it thinks it's people!)
If I'd been Mr. Granger I'd probably have punched the condescending idiot in the face.
And all this just makes it even more absurd that JK Rowling has recently claimed that while not all Slytherins are racist, all wizards who think they are better than other races go to Slytherin. Not only does this completely contradict what we clearly saw in the canon she created, but it's also rather stupid and irresponsible to imply that racism can be found only in one specific segment of the population.
Sometimes I think Rowling should be gagged and legally compelled to stop ruining her story with thoughtless comments and silly retcons long after the books were finished...

    • @eviemonroe647

This is actually a very sound theory that I can agree with, as a fellow Ravenclaw. It has sound logic and historical evidence to back it up. I'm only upset that I didn't come to a similar realization sooner!

  • @avapatterson8183
    @avapatterson8183 6 лет назад +798

think of it this way. you are a young witch/wizard. you've just been told you're going to a magic school! yeah! you sit on the stool and get the sorting hat placed on your head like every other student and then it says Slytherin.
immediately, everyones attitude towards you changes. the kid that you sat with on the train refuses to look at you. the rest of the school boos you as you walk to your table. even the teachers are a little prejudiced against you, whether intentional or not.
for the rest of your schooling life, your looked down upon, feared, hated. and then someone tells you that he could use someone like you. tells you you're worth something. tells you you can help him make the world a better place for people like you. tells you he can help you get back at the people who hurt you.
this is why most of voldermorts followers were Slytherins. if it wasn't for the hate they received all their life they wouldn't have been driven to join voldermort.

Professor Phoenixia Thanks! Just heard it in an audiobook and wasn't sure I heard right, so thanks for confirming that. Doesn't seem like it happened all the time and from all the Gryffindors but it would sure explain some of the resentment the Slytherins felt towards the rest of the school, like ava patterson said. I'm listening to all of the books now and it looks like in the first three books, the Slytherins are pretty much the villains in the stories (apart from Voldemort, of course), whereas in the later books, the process of their rehabilitation and deeper insight into some of the Slytherin personalities unravels.

As a good Hufflepuff, I have to say you left some things out when talking about Slytherins. Merlin was a Slytherin, I know shocker. Isolt Sayre one of the founders of Ilvermony was a Gaunt, that made her an heir of Slytherin. She dreamed of going to Hogwarts but her Aunt would not allow her. If she had gone to Hogwarts she might have been sorted into Slytherin because she could operate Salazar Slytherins wand and she was ambitious. She ran away to America with Slytherins wand and during a fight with her Aunt, the wand was damaged. Isolt buried the wand in the ground and it grew into a snake tree. Its leaves had medicinal properties. Since a wand is linked to its wizard you might ask since a snakewood tree gree with healing properties grew from it, could Salazar Slytherin have been a healer? Something to ponder. As far as the Basilisk goes Slytherins wand core is a basilisk. Could he have grown the Basilisk because he was a parselmouth not to kill muggle born... so many questions

Sure Hufflepuff gets a bad rap but we don't care... it just kills our chill to freak about it. Ravenclaw is a cool house. You have the prettiest house ghost. You are smart, very posh common room. I personally think that Slytherins need Hufflepuffs, just like Gryffindor need Ravenclaw. Reason?
    Let's say
a Gryffindor is brave and determined. Uncontrolled, s/he can be an anarchist and prideful.
a Ravenclaw is knowledgeable and wise. Uncontrolled, s/he can be all talk, less action.
a Slytherin is ambitious and resourceful person. Uncontrolled, he forget his moral compass.
a Hufflepuff is kind, fair, and loyal. Uncontrolled, s/he can be unfocused, lazy, and dependent.
    See my points?
Bravery and determination need wisdom in order to succeed.
So does ambition need empathy to change the world.

Good point!!! That's why I hate Rowlings idea that she seperates these people. They should share everything and learn from another! And actually every single person should be helped to strengthen every one of those 4 aspects within. They should have 8 school years and spent two each as a Huff, a Slyth, a Gryff or a Rave ;)

You know who's a good example of a

Hiro Okumura - from 'Isekai Word Cheat', the Manga.
He likes Books a lot, so you think first of Ravenclaw, but then
you realize that: no, he's actually a Slytherin.
      A very, very healthy one.
He's always thinking of his own benefit,

He's affecting everyone, but not manipulating anyone,
if you get what i mean.
He's also teaching people being polite - in a very rude manner though (lol)...
He's practical and teaches people that most importantly.
Mercy, Kindness and all that are indeed Positive BUT you

Like, Voldy may have gone deeper into the dark arts and there was this fear factor that he could be immortal, but Grindelwald wasn't as ignorant as Voldemort. Even the accomplishments are in favor of Grindelwald. We have to consider that a) Voldemort operated in Great Britain and he may have recruited people from other countries, but never acted on a larger scale there. b) Grindelwald never acted in Great Britain after that summer in Godric's Hollow (probably because of Dumbledore and their blood pact) but instead went on to win people from various countries. Given that events in Harry Potter happen in Great Britain it's only natural that Voldy would be considered the most powerful dark wizard. He happend to wzards in UK, while Grindelwald didn't.

And when it comes down to it, Slytherins and Gryffindors share a lot of similarities (which is why Harry could have been in Slytherin if he wanted).
For those who still have prejudice against us, think of it this way - hurt people are the ones who hurt people. Perhaps it is in fact the instant mistreatment and constant dislike shared by the other houses and even some staff from the moment one is sorted into Slytherin that indeed pushes them over the edge to embrace the Dark Lord, dark magic and/or being a cruel person themselves.
    Food for thought...

The protagonists from the _Cursed Child_ play are Slytherins. Ravenclaw is the only house without a protagonist in a major piece of _Harry Potter_ media.
Ravenclaw has had a few prominent side characters like Lovegood, Chang, Quirrell, and Lockhart.

    I'm a Ravenclaw.
Slytherin definitely made up a bigger portion of the dark wizards, but dark wizards can come from all houses or different schools for that matter. Karkaroff, Quirrell, Pettigrew, Lockheart, and others were all non-Slytherin. In fact, both the acceptance letter for Hufflepuff and for Slytherin imply that other houses have had dark wizards (The least being from Hufflepuff). While most dark wizards in the British Isles are Slytherins, most Slytherins actually turn out to be decent people. As mentioned, Horace Slughorn was helpful in the fight against Voldemort, and Snape was one of the most heroic wizards of time (Up there with Harry and Dumbledore). Regulus Black, the Malfoy family, and Gregory Goyle all defected from Voldemort's ranks and Draco and Regulus even fought against him. Nacrissa Malfoy saved Harry Potter's life andthe most influencial wizard of all time, legend even among muggles and a champion for their rights was a Slytherin. His name? Merlin.

I feel like J.K. Rowling did a bit of a disservice to Slytherin house in her books. I can't think of one redeemable likeable character from Slytherin besides possibly Snape, that we got know beyond a bare mention.
Malfoy... I just don't like that to the very end he never really changed sides, even when Harry pretty much saved him.
He sort of begrudgingly steps out of the conflict, but doesn't acknowledge that Harry was right all along. What insufferable pride.
I really wish we could've got a good character from Slytherin to show us that they're not all evil.

Slughorn is my favorite example, but even he was a weasel only out for his own glory. I wish we could have gotten to know Regulus Black more. He reminds me a lot of Draco, I mean, they are related. born to a typically Slytherin pureblood wizarding family, deep connections to the dark lord, following their parents mostly out of duty and self-preservation, but internally conflicted over what they're being asked to do. Unlike Regulus though, Malfoy didn't have the guts to fight back like Regulus did.
It would have been nice to get a student character in the last few books that was Slytherin. Someone like Luna who was kind of against the grain you know? Someone to contrast with Malfoy and be on Harry's side.

    • @TeganThrussell

Well, it all comes down to the fact that slytherens are all purebloods. Their parents are overly proud of being slytheren, so it passes onto the kids, growing each generation. So its not necessarily the house, its the fact thst they are purbloods as fsr as rechords go. Like normal schools, with popular kids often becoming snobs because they get attention, and they think that its better to be like them. NOTE i said most, not all. I think that Hufflepuffs get the same treatment as Slytherins. Being that when I being a real Huffelpuff as to my Harry Potter friends that I'm a Hufflepuff they almost always give a "are you Sirius" look. Huffelpuffs usually get hell from people who don't understand the traits of Hufflepuffs. Griffindor is bravery but it doesn't that you will stand by your allies when shit hits the fan. Ravenclaw is cleverness but cleverness doesn't mean that you are smart. Slytherin is ambition but that doesn't mean that you are evil. And finally Hufflepuff is loyalty which means when the shit does hit the the fan a Hufflepuff will stay and fight by your side till the bitter end. I would rather have a army of Hufflepuffs than Griffindors.

When one of my friends got the news that she was sorted into Slytherin, she told me almost right away, BUT she expected my attitude towards to to change because of her house. She said that people said that Slytherin was the "bad house." I told her that I relate in a way because quite a few people I've met dislike (being) Hufflepuff because it is the "lazy and boring house." She was surprised when practically nothing changed, and if anything we grew closer instead of drifted apart. #hufflepuffpride #slytherinpride #slytherpuffunited

In regards to Slytherins fighting against Voldemort- my personal headcanon is that Barty Crouch Sr. was a Slytherin. His ambition and leadership qualities would make him fit right in and his willingness to use forbidden curses fit in with the negative qualities of Slytherins. Also his son was a Slytherin and Barty Crouch Sr. was super proud of him so it would make sense if his son followed in his footsteps while at Hogwarts.
I kind of wonder why J.K. Rowling didnt establish Slytherin as his house because it just fits so well. He fits in very well with the other good Slytherins in the books- being a deeply flawed character but still ultimately on the side of the heroes. And Crouch Sr. was Voldemort's biggest enemy after Dumbledore so him being in Slytherin would be rather interesting and would redeem the house to a degree.
(Of course I realize that hes neither a teacher or a student and has been out of Hogwarts for decades, so his house affiliation would hardly be relevant to the story. But come on, if Lockhart and Umbridge have canon houses, why not Crouch Sr.?)

This is what “Slytherin” means to me and why I think it’s a great house. #SlytherinPride
The sorting hat states that those sorted into Slytherin are destined for greatness. But what exactly defines greatness and how is it achieved? I think the answer lies in something J.R. Rowling said in an interview: Slytherin house was created to balance out the other three houses (i.e. she needed some sort of everyday villain for Harry). When I read that the word “balance” really stuck out to me and I started thinking “what if, in order to be great, Slytherins were a balance of all of the other houses?” By using Slytherin’s characterizing traits ambition, cunning, and resourcefulness Slytherins become highly adaptable to any situation. In using their adaptability they are able to take on the traits of the other houses to benefit their need. Think about it, many people say that Gryffindors and Slytherins are very similar houses but Slytherins do not stick their neck out as much as Gryffindors do. Many would also agree that Slytherins are the most similar to the Hufflepuffs except that Slytherins are loyal to a smaller group of people (usually their friends and family). In addition, Slytherins are often creative and visionary much like the Ravenclaws, more so than any other house, however they like to learn specifically for their benefit not necessarily for their love of knowledge. By using their adaptability, Slytherins are able to master the qualities of the other houses and, when putting all four houses together, can become truly great.
    Some examples:
Snape is a great blend of all four houses. 1) Gryffindor - He was clearly brave. Harry even stated that he was one of the bravest men he’s ever known. 2) Hufflepuff - He was clearly loyal. His love for Lily never faltered and he was consistently loyal to Dumbledore even when Voldemort returned. 3) Ravenclaw - He clearly has high intelligence as he’s a professor of Potions and Dumbledore is constantly asking him for help. 4) Slytherin - He has ambition (to become a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor) even though he never gets it. He also is highly adaptable as he’s able to continuously get out of sticky situations with Voldemort.
Scorpius Malfoy- 1) Slytherin - He’s charming and resourceful. Whenever they’re in trouble he’s able to find a way out. 2) Ravenclaw - he likes learning new things. He’s a geek. He’s love reading and spending time in the library. 3) Hufflepuff - he is very loyal to Albus. He doesn’t seem to hate anyone, even when others don’t like him. 4) Gryffindor - Over the course of Cursed Child, Scorpius becomes braver and braver, even surprising himself with what he does.
Hermione - You’re probably thinking “what?!”, but I actually think Hermione would be an amazing Slytherin. She’s definitely brave (braver than most give her credit for) but does not always jump right into things. She’s thinks things through logically and is always learning new spells to help her succeed (her Ravenclaw side). She is a fiercely loyal friend and loves all people and house-elves (her Hufflepuff side). And she’s definitely cunning and resourceful as we’ve seen her get the trio out of situations time and time again (her Slytherin side). Not to mention she’s ambitious (Minister of Magic!). I think Hermione would fit right in in the house of the serpent.
There are other characters that display many, if not all, of the other houses’ traits, but I believe that Slytherins are able to do it best. Their adaptability gives them an advantage to not only pick up the traits but also master them, thereby making each of them well rounded wizards and truly great.

I’m a Hufflepuff and one of my best friends is a Slytherin. I agree that there’s a lot of stereotypes set by the books surrounding both of our houses that needs to be rectified. It’s not about how many people in your house have done terrible things (or how little have done good things). It’s about whether or not YOU choose to do good things. The Hogwarts houses are meant to bring out, define, and shape your greatest qualities: in Slytherin’s case, cunning, ambition, resourcefulness. One is a true Slytherin by trying to show the best of those qualities. Show your cunning in thinking through a problem, resourcefulness when placed in a sticky situation, and ambition by continuing towards your dreams when everyone else has given up. That’s what makes you a Slytherin, not whether your blood is pure.

Exactly! I'm in Gryffindor (I wanted to be in Hufflepuff so badly, though :-( ) but I totally agree. Plus, some Slytherins are also patient and meticulous! No other character is as detail-oriented as Snape and Slughorn. When I was younger, I had a crush on Snape (not Alan Rickman, the books Snape) because of the scene in the Order of the Phoenix where Harry yells "He's got Padfoot in the place where it's hidden!" and Snape totally keeps his wits about him, he pretends he doesn't know what Harry's talking about but realizes what's going on, checks Sirius' place and tells the Order to go help him at the Ministry. I was like... "Wow, it took a Slytherin to do that!" I felt like Gryffindor adrenaline levels are too high; a Gryffindor would be able to play it cool but not THAT cool. For some reason, I thought this was one of the sexiest things I ever read about. So I dreamt about dating a Slytherin.

I vote for house snape! And also, I’m a hufflepuff (well that’s what Pottermore says) so really slytherins and hufflepuffs are on the Same boat; we both get put down - slytherin for being “evil”, hufflepuff for being “basic”. But why does this happen? I’m not sure. Really, these two houses could be amazing. Young ambitious wizards and witches aspiring to be great, and young kind wizards and witches helping all around them. I mean, really, real life gryffindors aren’t even that good; imagine someone saying in their application for their job this:
Hufflepuff: “I’m hard-working, patient and loyal.”
Slytherin: “I’m ambitious, cunning and resourceful.”
Ravenclaw: “I’m intelligent, clever and smart”
Gryffindor: “ I’m gallant, brave and daring.”
I mean, how is being brave gonna help you in a cubicle, let’s be real!
Thanks for reading this far and have a day full of hufflepuffs :) (and slytherins)

Of all the house animal mascots, it’s the badger that will wreck your day the most if you cross it.

Even though this is an old video and even though I am a Gryffindor I am actualy pretty upset that people think most of the Slytherins are evil and that Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw weren't much in the series. If there was a lot of dark wizards from Slytherin that doesn't mean everyone in Slytherin house is evil, Regulus Arctulus Black literaly died about at the age of eighteen when he tried to destroy one of the horocruxes. I am upset that there are many people that think Hufflepuff is the worst house, I am glad that they are getting there own five movies especialy because Cedric Digory is my favorite male character. I think that Ravenclaw also deserves more respect and apreciation because there wasn't much about Ravenclaw in the Harry Potter series and because if it wasn't for my favorite female character Luna Lovegood who is a RAVENCLAW Harry would have never found Ravenclaws Diadem, which is one of the horocruxes.

the hat let harry decide to not be slytherin but it offered slytherin and we dont know how many other kids the hat let decide for themselves, how many of them also decided not to go into slytherin because they were afraid of being associated with it? and how many of them might have been muggleborn?
snape was also a muggleborn slytherin if I'm not mistaken, and some of the lesser characters that we hardly heard of in the storyline... it wasnt a huge number of them but its definitely possible
remember "mudblood" is like the slur term for "muggleborn" too so half-blood and less (like Voldemort) is still considered "muggleborn"

Ok, Salazar may have been prejudice against muggleborns but he had good reasons, you forget that at this time there was witch hunting and if a muggle got the hogwarts acceptance letter and told say a family member who then goes and tells a friend who tells someone else and the word gets spread around a witch hunter might hear and find out about hogwarts killing the witches and wizards so really Salazar Slytherin was trying to protect the students by not wanting Muggle Born students at hogwarts.

That Gal Alex Wow, that is an amazing thought, it totally makes sense! I'm a Hufflepuff and Helga's opinion was quite contrary to what Salazar thought, but I think nowadays those houses would actually make really good friends!
PS: I'm now telling the Salazar-wasn't-discriminating-just-being-careful-theory to literally EVERYONE. You made my day, random RUclips comment, you made my day.

fat vape. I'm fairly sure the Basilisk was intended to protect Hogwarts from Muggles. In fact it could be argued that Salazar only mistrusted Muggle born students due to the tensions at the time.

Basilisk was hidden. There isn't said that basilisk was used by Salazar. If think that it was just final weapon at security system. If you have a gun in a safe, does it mean that you are a killer? I think that if he would like use basilisk to kill them, he should invite as many victims as it is possible. But what he did? He left school and left basilisk hidden and closed.
Maybe prof. Sprought is more dangerous than Slytherin. He had there just one hidden and locked beast. She have there devil's snare, hidden, but not locked. She have there also many mandragoras that they are dangerous as a babies and she wants that 12 years old student carry about them. Ofcourse single adult plant can kill them all.
Lets talk abut Hagrid and his hipogryph, spiders, dragon or even book.
Don't forget that there are more dangerous objects that can easy kill you like army of living armors or even whole forest. Let be honest, if Salazar realy want to kill anybody there was so many ways that he didn't need a basilisk. Maybe Tome used it in a wrong way, but it is not Salazar fault. Maybe it was the most dangerous weapon in school (in my opinion there were things more or at lest that same dangerous), but it was smallest danger for students, becouse it was hidden, locked and under control of Salazar.
I don't belive that none of other founders know about it. Firtst of all, there couldn't be legend about chamber of secrets if at the beggining nobody knows about that. Also i think that Ravena was to smart for that and it is hard to believe that 3 from 4 greatest wizzards of that time misted that somebody is building giant chamber at their castle as a new home for giant, dangerous and propably rare and hard to transport monster. Don't forget that Gryffindor propably was looking at Slytherin like Potter at Malfoy and castle was full of ghosts and house elves. I am sure that sooner or later one of them wouldn't see something and i don't belive that any house elf could hide something from Hufflepuff.
So for Salazar basilisk was just a final weapon only to protect castle. Dangerous for enemies, bute safe for students. Hidden, locked, controled and propably never used by Salazar Slytherin.

people should not judge by our cover (oh you are a hufflepuff you are a loser or oh you are a slytherin you are evil) but my point is that if you are slytherin it doesn´t mean you are evil, or if you´re hufflepuff you are not a loser. People need to stop judging by covers and start looking on the inside of others.

We're the two particularly misunderstood houses. People don't bother to learn how great Hufflepuff actually is, and people don't bother to look past the Slytherin stereotypes. I feel a great sense of unity with Slytherins for that reason, although being sorted Slytherin on Pottermore while being a Hufflepuff also increases my support for the house.

Since it's been some time since this video was made, I'd love a new video about this. What each houses values are, positive and negative. How and why the houses can be misunderstood and judged from the outside, and maybe how the books may not give the most accurate description of the houses (perhaps because they are told from Harry's perspective?).
