I got this model about a month ago for my Mac Mini, and Im in awe. It’s such a fantastic screen for my needs - it has a beautiful display, it’s minimalistic (which for me is the equivalent of a good design, I hate all those Bells and whistles), it has plethora of ports, more then I will ever need, it turns on very quickly, doesn’t wobble, plenty of brightness (I keep it around 70-75% bright), simple menu with good access via button on the back side panel. I also don’t use monitor speakers ever so it’s great that I don’t have to pay for that and use my iPhone as a continuity camera so I don’t need a build in one. The image via USB c is phenomenal, this lets me use my Mac mini hdmi post to connect another screen. There is no issue with scaling on Mac, contrary to what some people been saying. It’s stable, the stand is flat so I can put stuff on it. Plus 27” turned out to be so much better then 32 or 34” which would be waaaaay to big. Overall 10/10. Seriously. For me.:)
Hello. I have Macbook pro 13", i want to connect it big monitor for editing photo and video. I watch many reviews about Samsung M8, Dell U2723, Lenovo Qreator 27, Samsung S80UA. I cannot decide to buy one of them. Please help me about it.
@@ElchinJavadov I'm no expert, however I am an expert in being overly "researcherous" and I can only suggest this - if you already have narrowed your search to these 4 then there is only one thing to do. Just PICK ONE AND BE DONE wit it :) Seriously. Just make a decision, get it, test it in your environment and if you're happy with it, keep it. If not, send it back and choose something else. There is NO PERFECT MONITOR. And there is not much sense in wasting time (like I did) to keep narrowing forever. There will always be something and the truth is, it doesn't matter. We are not curing cancer here, and it's not a major life decision. It's just a monitor.:) I for one didn't like Samsung M8 because it seem plasticky. I also narrowed my search to the companies that make a product that is suppose to do one thing but do it well, that's why I picked Dell - no crazy features, no speakers. It's a monitor, not a coffee maker and a lawn mower in one. I am super happy with my Dell. It's minimalistic, no fuss with any features, tons of ports, great stand, sharp as a scalpel in terms of picture quality. And it's enough.
Do you use any other color space besides standard? If you don’t mind would you try to use DCI P3. For me the image has a green tint when I use this color space.
Yup…i have a lg 27” 4k and using my MacBook Pro m1 2021 and when i set the resolution to 3840 x 2160…it looks sharp, but the text are very tiny…meaning you have to sit like 2 feet away from the monitors. So don’t get it. Either get a 5k 27” or 4k 32”.
I've been using this monitor for about a year now with a M1 MacBook and my new M3 MacBook. It looks great, it has wonderful color and accuracy. However, the famous Mac scaling problem...Your Mac will want to run this monitor with the UI sized at 1080p, which makes everything sharp but the UI is really big. The next best thing is running the UI scaled to 1440, which looks correct but the text is not great. It's readable, and it's fine, but if you spend the entire day reading it's not all that sharp and might annoy you with time. You can look up videos as to why this is, but basically Macs don't like 4k monitors. To get the UI right, it runs at 5k, then scales down to 4k. If you plug in this monitor and ask your Mac what resolution it's running, it will say 5k. The scaling down to 4k costs some of your performance, a few %, and the text suffers a bit. Maybe you won't mind, but you should know you're making a compromise on a 4k monitor to save some money, and it's an expensive monitor. I wish I wasn't misled by reviewers. This is a fantastic monitor for my Windows computer, and mediocre for my Mac.
Its a great question, all I can figure is one should get the Studio Display if you have the means, otherwise this monitor is good. You just have to be ok with the compromises and know what you're getting so you're not mad and wish you got the Studio Display. You aren't going to get this monitor and plug it in and be like "hey this monitor is trash" cause it isn't, but you also aren't going to plug it in and be like "hey this monitor is perfect for my mac and really shows its full potential" cause it doesn't do that either.@@Lexlugr
hello may you can help me I just bought 27" and I connected to my Mac with type c and its charging , so I worry about the battery drain on Mac all the time is charging , so I bough a cable idmi to type c , and I chose 60hz and the monitor is turning off orflashing , what type connection you are using? thank you
I strongly disagree with your take on the design. I think it looks gorgeous and I wish they made more monitors that looked like this. All the gaming monitors have these cheesy looking sharp edges and useless rgb gimmicks. Idk I feel like I could look at this monitor all day
@@SunSunSunn the Dell's ultrasharp lineup has always been the one with the thinner bezels around. I have now in front of me a model from 2013, already with 4mm bezels back when nobody ever did so. Then a lot of companies started to copy this feature. Apple monitor bezels are still three times bigger
I went with the 32 inch version and I love it. I don't really need 5k, and I love all the port connections you get with it I don't need to run a hub now with my Macbook M1 Max. And the wake up time is really quick at about 3 seconds
Thanks for this post about wake up time at the ebd. This has been one of my biggest disappointments with using non Apple display. My Samsung takes 6 seconds. Cutting that in half and getting a display that is 32 inch and cheaper than the Studio display us a good compromise.
I have the 32" and 27" versions. 332 in landscape and 27 in portrait. I have and M1 Macbook pro and there are scaling issues. Unless you want it tiny you'll have to take the resolution down a notch, which is a problem the studio display doesn't have. That being said these monitors work great. Get plenty bright and are great to use. I have them on Vivo arms so the minimal bezels look great and hover over my desk shelf and desk in a cool way.
@Andrew Hamilton I just got myself a Dell 27" Ultrasharp. I changed the 4k resolution one step down because everything was super small. If I scaled one more step I can see now what people mean by "scaling issues". The text is indeed a tiny tiny bit less sharp, but to be honest? I couldn't care less! :) This "scaling issue" is NOT an issue at all! And I have no idea why people so exaggerate this issue, as many other for that matter. I spend months going through reviews on YT, worrying about so much. My advice - just buy the damn monitor and be done with it! Seriously.
@@szatanica1 Hi I just got the Dell 27' Ultrasharp aswell. For my monitor the image quality is fantastic but for the video quality, it can only play at 1080p on RUclips. Does yours have this issue aswell ?
Got one of these in 32 inch from work. Nice to work with! No issues. Ultrawide would have been preferred though. I'm missing a bit of horizontal space, even at 32 inch
This is the one I've been looking at. I could get two, plus speakers, plus a web cam, all for less than the Studio Display with height adjustable stand.
I am considering a 32” version of this, a nice set of reference monitor level speakers dedicated to just the computer and pocketing $800 or $900 as opposed to getting the Studio Display. I love Apple products, but $2000 for a 27” that is height adjustable is just out of line.
Literally received this monitor after going back and forth with on whether I should go for this one! Its looking quite good so far, though I haven't put it through a thorough test yet. The power delivery for my 2018 MBP and the fact that it will all go through USBC is including network is amazing!
This seems to offer a good "Value Proposition". 4K UHD and a nice suite of ports. You can even have two computers connected via the hub, and switch between them. All for less than $700 (USD)
This is the one that is at the top of my list for reasonably priced alternatives to the Apple Studio Display. I plan to get the 32 inch. For monitors with good color accuracy and a nice selection of ports, not much else seems to compare.
@@alex.maxwell I have seen many reviews of that one (too many really, Samsung must have sent out a crap-ton of free monitors for review 😀). Unfortunately it’s not something I would be Al all interested in. I am sure it would make a great monitor for many people, but I am looking for something much better. The build quality on the M8 strikes me as poor, it’s port selection and hub features are very basic, It doesn’t offer the level of color accuracy I am interested in, and I could care less about the smart TV and voice assistant built into it, actually I would go as far as saying I DON’T want those things in a monitor that I will be using for creative work. I have been researching for weeks now and the Dell U2723QE is at the top of my list. The BenQ PD series 32inch is another option, but is is not as bright and lacks the newer IPS black technology.
@@sick-impatient That’s awesome to hear that you are happy with them! Can I ask where you got them? Having trouble finding any in the stores of my area, Dell is showing delivery dates in September, and last I looked on Amazon they were out of stock.
Got mine the other day. It’s super nice! We’ll see how performance fares at a scaled resolution on my Mac. Right now it’s driven by my Dell work laptop, soon to be replaced by a 14” MacBook Pro.
@Mark Florida any feedback? I am also concerned about this. I bought the Samsung S80UA (similar specs to this one) and I had very serious performance issues when I use single USB-C for power and display. I returned it immediately. At work we use U2722DE which is 2K and scaling is not an issue, but the image is a bit blurry. I will switch soon to 14" MBP M1, so I wonder if the GPU in the M1 will fare better than the Radeon on my MBP 15" 2019
@@DekoRoker I am using two 4K monitors with a 14inch M2 Pro that are both connect via a thunderbolt dock. I have never had any issues related to performance or scaling. I use both monitors scaled to WQHD. It works perfectly. The only slight issue is that sometimes it takes up to 5 seconds for both monitors to wake up, i am not sure why that is.
Scaling is definitely an issue when it comes to these monitors. I have a 27" monitor and scaling down to 4K, the text is tiny. I wonder if it would be more usable one a 32". Haven't had the chance to test this out...
@@jesussepulveda9992 1440p only for non display macs like the studio or mini. If you have a build in retina, you will need another retina device to avoid scaling and blur.
I'm monitor shopping for MacOS and I'm very disappointed that 4k 27" has that inherent scaling problem. It's not even Apple trying to make things proprietary. It's just naturally like that. I'm considering the 5k from Apple but $1600 is a lot to spend on a monitor. But I'm rationalizing it to myself by saying it will hold it's value.
@@Ken-zg3ze Going with the Apple Studio monitor will be a good idea. It is quite expensive though.. but I think you'd enjoy it. It also depends what you're going to be using it for.. I use my 27" 4k monitor, not scaled at 4k, and I think it still looks pretty good. Then again, I don't use it for very accurate colors, etc..
The 32" is a great option if you need a larger display and don't mind a less sharper image although the further away you are from the monitor, the less of an issue it becomes.
I just got mine. Maybe my standards are lower than yours but I think the look of the monitor is great. The back is not white it is silver. . Not boring at all. I changed from my Dell U2413 monitor which did have a wider color gamut. Funny how ten years later this Dells monitor only covers 89% of AdobeRGB while my old Dell covered 100%.
Isn't there a stuck white pixel near the top right corner? The problem with going higher in resolution is the chance of getting a dead or stuck pixel, especially when it's straight out the box. I also had a Dell monitor with a dead pixel out the box.
I am going crazy - trying to decide how to upgrade my old 2017 27" iMac to today's computers - I like the new M4 Mac mini - but selecting monitors has been tough. I'm getting fatigued watching videos on RUclips... lol (thanks for yours..by the way) .... I keep thinking I may end up with the 24" iMac (I'm ok with losing some screen real estate. I work in my home recording/practice studio - and I want to restore from backup to my new computer - whichever it is. Of course If I get the Mac mini - then I have to have chosen a monitor to go with it. I have usb-c interface currently going to my studio monitors...so I don't care about the audio on the monitor....I thought that the Dell Ultrashort U2723QE was pretty cool - especially where I wouldn't have to buy an external dock/port for my peripherals - printer... mainly.... I realize that I wouldn't have a built-in camera - like the new M4 iMac...for video FaceTime calls - but ... I don't really use that - so far - I prob would just use my iPhone. Thanks again - I will keep wrestling with what to do - ..... I want to be frugal - but have the money not to be.... I don't do video editing so I don't need any of the extremely expensive Mac displays. (your opinion would be helpful.... thanks)
Thanks for the review. Would be nice if you could put the dell side by side with the studio display for comparison. The Dell was on my shortlist and I almost almost got it.... until I took the plunge and went for the ASD instead I come from a 5kimac I just love the glossy screen experience and just didn't want to buy something that I might regret, and I agree with your comments about the fit and finish comparisons between the ASD and the rest, knowing that I will be staring at the next screen I buy for the next 6 to 7 years. I also read somewhere how macOS doesn't scale down well with 4k displays resulting in blurry text according to some users (compared to text which is scaled down on 5k and 2k displays). Has anyone noticed blurrier text? The dell is probably the best bang in the current market for Mac owners. It's kinda like choosing which camera to buy or any other tech. You can spend exponentially more for a only slightly better tech, but sometimes that's worth it to the user.
@@BrandonMilner tried to post a link but was deleted. There is a yt video and online charts that compare macos scaling on 5k, 4k and 2k displays. Im not a tech guy but my understanding is this: 1) macos is more suited for downscaling to 5K or 2K displays (at the resolution that people "ideally" use i.e. not massive or too small icons/text) compared to 4K displays 2) for 4K displays, whilst downscaling is definitely possible, macos has to work "harder" (something like it has to reduce the resolution by half for each cycle) to downscale the "ideal" resolution to fit 4K screens. 3) This may result in a loss of performance - as the core is already performing the downscaling (on 4K monitors) in the first instance, in addition to other cpu/gpu intensive tasks that you might be doing at that time, like video editing etc. There is a loss in performance overall. You may not notice this if you are using general office apps. There is also another video that compares text resolution on 4K vs 5K, and there is a notable difference - at least if you come from a 5K imac.
In case anyone wants to know, I just ordered the 34-inch curved ultrawide version of this (U3421WE), and although there's still no camera, it does have built-in speakers.
What scaling setting have you been running this at? I'm concerned about running 1080p scaling and the 4k scaling to my knowledge makes things too small for practical use but I also don't want to sacrifice performance that comes with using non-HiDPi scaling.
@@MercUndGut I’m not sure what kind of performance is lost, but I recall reading about it and watching multiple videos where people discussed it. I haven’t seen any benchmarks, either.
@@MercUndGut I use 2560*1440 on this monitor, cuz 3840*2160 is way too small when it comes to text. So far I don't see any performance issue. 4K videos still look 4k on this monitor when 2560*1440 is used. I don't think it affects the video quality. Just the text,
I always feel like that the 4K native resolution on Mac makes everything too small, even on a 32"… If I use a scaled resolution option, my macbook starts overheating. I rather use a 2560x1440px screen
In terms of picture quality and text crispness, which is better in your view, the Samsung or the dell? I have a Dell 165 Hz ips panel which looks excellent and very crisp. I love the high refresh rate.
I’m kind of happy that this display doesn’t have dedicated speakers. Monitor speakers are always garbage and I’m happy that my MacBook won’t ever look to send audio to my monitor over it’s internal speakers, my AirPods Max, or my dedicated desktop audio monitors.
I have this exact same 4k monitor connected with my MacBook, and I love it (coming from a 2560x1440 DELL). Gonna compare it to a Studio Display, the 5k is probably quite a difference
Re: "...the 5k is probably quite a difference". My Apple Studio Monitor arrived about two weeks ago. Let's put it to you this way - using the Apple Studio will never disappoint you for as long as you own it. The clarity of it is everything and its speakers are a delight. (Speaking of sound, if I REALLY want to hear great sound with my computer based video content, I just "AirPlay switch" the audio content to my HomePod stereo pair that are located basically behind me - enough said about a speaker pair that has appreciated dramatically in price every since Apple discontinued them. That should indicate something about their sound quality.) I don't doubt the Dell is a very good monitor - but - you will always be reminded of the fact that it is a "compromise". It is a very good to great compromised design but it will never delight you as the Apple Studio Monitor will. Is the Apple Studio Monitor worth $1000 more than the Dell. I don't know, honestly. How much do you value your eyesight? Your choice of monitor will impact your enjoyment over the next seven to eight years so ultimately, it is the consumer's call to make.
@@michaelbabiuk8758 Thanks, now I’m even more excited to give it a try 😃 unfortunately my order (ordered on day 1!) was delayed by three months! it was supposed to arrive two weeks ago as well, but it seems like Apple is prioritizing US. deliveries, and here in Germany they don't really care. Now my delivery date is July 5th :/
@@freder1k95 That is unfortunate. It will come eventually. Sad Grin. When it does arrive, make sure the first time you use it, to connect it via thunderbolt cable directly to your mac and NOT to an eGPU or Dock and then from the eGPU or dock to your mac. That way any firmware updates required will be detected automatically - after a few minutes of course. (grin) Good Luck with it,.
The ultrasharp series has features I don't need. I just need the basic video connection and that's it. When get to this model the price is close to the 32" mid-end P-series.
Duh. 4K will have scaling issues. No one is going to use it at native as the text is tiny. Then one you scale it up its a little fuzzy as its not a perfect pixel division. that's really important to tell any one who buys a 4K with an apple
I don't even know why you discuss the look and build for fully half the video. You yourself acknowledge it doesn't really matter compared to the picture quality and I agree. You say this is a great monitor but not great at HDR. The apple monitor doesn't do HDR AT ALL so is this a negative? Wouldn't turning HDR off entirely be equivalent? Lastly no mention at all of the sharpness of a 5k retina panel vs scaled 4k panel?
Great vid! I just got 2 for my home office. I also have a studio display and when they are side by side the colours on the Dell are defiantly dulled by the anti-glare coating. Any recommendations on the best colour settings/profile to be as similar to a studio display using an MacBook pro m1?
I agree totally with this take. I bought the 32” version of this Dell monitor, the u3223q. The only issue I have is the aggressive anti glare film Dell uses - I wish there was a glossy option and would gladly pay $500 more for a glass option.
my thoughts exactly! coming from a 27 inch 5k iMac 2015, I was spoiled by the glass which saturates color St beautifully... I don't think I can ever go back to those anti glare screens that dull the color.
@@hanvyj2 Because "most people" (making a huge generalisation) are more likely to want to minimise glare and reflections rather than have a space perfectly lit for display work. If you've ever had to work with a window behind you, you'd no why reflective screens are a no-go for the majority of people. I'm a professional video editor, and I'd never buy a glossy display for this reason.
@@FabrizioBasso Possibly! I've never actually had a glossy screen so perhaps I don't know what I'm missing. But sure, in a totally light controlled environment, I'd be up for trying it. In this room, right now? No chance
I'm a Graphic Designer and I want to move from an iMac to a Mac Mini M2 Pro. I've been researching monitors and I feel like my head will explode. This one is in my price range so I think I'll go with this. I really wanted to get a single ultra-wide monitor but I can't find one in my price range that is good for my work.
@@vetrimaaranrayappan No complaints! Since I couldn't get a single widescreen monitor I purchased a Dell U27230E - which I used mainly for my graphic design work, and a Dell S2722QC as a second monitor that I use for more general things and which was cheaper. So side by side I get a pretty wide computer desktop. And honestly, I can't really tell a big difference between the two of them in regards to image quality. I don't do any video editing, so I really don't need a far superior monitor. This has worked out fine for me. Once you have a two monitor set up you won't ever go back to working on a single one.
@@vetrimaaranrayappan If I have one minor gripe, it's that while the monitors are the same size screens, the case on the S2722QC monitor has a thicker bottom panel with the Dell logo on it. The U27230E doesn't have that. So side by side the one case doesn't line up across the bottom. It's a minor gripe and I didn't want to spend the extra money so that wouldn't happen. But I would have preferred if they were aesthetically identical.
Will this have the scaling issues as other 4k monitors on Macbook Pros? I hear if not doing the native resolutions of the screens, its gonna be very heavy on performance. So you should technically do either 5k or the 1440p for best performance?
You must be using an older Mac. There's no noticeable performance issues on an M1 Mac when scaling to 1440p. You get the high PPI of a 4k monitor at a scale that is perfect for most people. The M1 handles it flawlessly.
@@somelaveenguy6822 maybe. I ended up with double LG 5K monitors regardless (same panel as in iMacs afaik) 😂 Never had this buttery smooth picture quality that's for sure but it came with the normal rotten apple price tag
When working I have both a personal and work MacBooks on my desk. The studio display is more than I’m willing to spend so gonna pickup a pair of these dells. One for each MacBook. Also, I’ve heard the Studio Displays speakers, as expected they don’t come close to any passive or even active bookshelf speakers
can we disable charging from the monitor while connected via USB c? Because I don't want my MacBook pro to be charged by a monitor I just want it to be charged with its own adapter since I'm not really sure if it is healthy to charge by monitor for the battery.
Exactly I don't want my MacBook pro charging all the time this can't be good for any battery. In general I'll never charge my devices longer then needed.
I bought it, used it for 10 minutes and I am returning it. Colors are off, it slows down you Mac (Scaling) and omg it is so wobbly. I move my mouse and it shakes, I type and it shakes. You’d better have really stable desk (i have standing desk and It was no problem for my iMac 5k). I have just ordered Studio Display and I feel really silly for trying to save some money as I will be waiting two more months before I can actually use my Mac Studio.
Bought this one for 280e. No scaling issues at all with macOs (m3 or intel i9). Text is super sharp compared to my previous 2k 27"display. Don't listen bullshits regarding scaling issues. Not everyone needs to waste 2k for a ridiculously overpriced studio display.
Here for the monitor but ended up asking for another aspect of the video... 3:16...What's the source of the video you played there? The one with the F-86s.
I'm waiting for a 2160p+ ultrawide with HDR and 120Hz+. Doesn't even need to support all of those at once - to support HDR, I'm fine with it dropping to "4K width", or for >60 Hz gaming it drops to 1/2-each-dimension resolution. (Say it was a 6144x2160 ultra-wide, crop off the sides to 4096 or 3840 for HDR, drop to 3072x1080 for 120+ Hz gaming mode.)
The IPS Glow on these monitors coming with IPS Black are insane! I already returned this Dell and the LG ips black. I’m I just unlucky with the panels I got!
Now that it's a year later, would love to see what monitor you would recommend as an alternative to the Studio. I'm looking to switch from my iMac (2015) to a laptop + monitor set up and can't justify a Studio screen. I am a graphic designer and have been researching.
I have been looking for a screen suitable for mac mini recently, with a budget of less than 400pounds (you don’t want to buy a screen that is much higher than the price of the host) and it must have a beautiful appearance and high image quality. At first I found Samsung M8, and MSI Modern MD271UL, but in the end I may still buy Dell. The picture quality of M8 is not good, and the MSI stand cannot be adjusted. Because I often use phtotshop, I have always used Mac screens, and it is difficult to find alternatives. One reason is that glossy monitors are rare in the market, and then they have to meet high nits, preferably IPS panels, and can also use USBC , I dare not try OLED because it has the problem of screen burning after long-term use. U2723QE is around 623pounds S2722QC is a cheaper one.
I would like your opinion. I presently have the Mac Studio Display with 2 Apple Thunderbolt Display connected to my Mac Studio. Do you feel the the Dell Ultra sharp is worth upgrading to or should I just keep my Thunderbolt Display. What areyourthoughts
Starting at 3:20, there appears to be a stuck pixel in the upper right corner (maybe 7-8 cm from upper edge & 9-10 cm from right edge?). Am I the only one seeing this?
I've been using one for over a month and I think this monitor is great at this price point. Don't expect it to be as sharp as some more pricey ones but it is a great balance between budget, convenience and image quality. But I'd like to suggest two points that this video has not pointed out to potential buyers doing research: (1) There is a Dell mini sound bar that snaps to the bottom of the monitor with magnet. If you just want casual playback audio quality I think it is good enough (for higher quality playback I use a headphone). (2) Be sure to buy a color calibrator like Datacolor Spyder. After tuning it can really resemble 90+% the colours on my MacBook Pro M1 Pro screen.
I hook my MBP M1 Max up to the 32-inch version of this monitor (U3223QE) at work. Love how clean my desk is now. Card readers and ethernet cords all neatly tucked away. I would say the blacks are good, but not MacBook Pro mini-LED good.
I already have speakers. I'm just looking for the best display I'm the $1000 price range. Is this more accurate than the Asus PA329C in terms of color. My main purpose for this monitor is photo and video editing. I didn't see any info on Adobe RGB.
I have the Dell 32 Curved 4K UHD Monitor - S3221QS. It doesn't have a USB hub but the integrated speaker sound descent. 3840x2460 there's alot of better monitors but for $399 it's good enough for now. Dell Ultrasharp monitors in my opinion have a clearer picture. Saving up for an 32" Apple Pro Display XDR to go with my Mac Studio.
No one will go to OLED in near future because OLED hearts your eyes and monitors are used by professionals who are useful resource and should see good.
Thank you for this awesome review! I was looking at this monitor to use with my Late 2021 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max due to its specs. I do want HDR but, 400nits is a little weak as you were stating at 4:32. This and this alone looks to be the biggest downside for my needs. I do plan on using a monitor for editing with FCPX along with ON1 Photo Raw. I like the fact of 2000:1contrast ratio, 100% Rec 709 and 98% P3. Other than Apple, do you have any recommendations with similar specs but, closer to 500 - 600 nits for HDR? As always, I sincerely appreciate all of your reviews! Great job as always!! Thanks again. 👍😊
Same boat as you, with the same Questions lol I also got the same m1 max macbook pro, same needs fcpx and more than 400 nits. I refuse to get that studio display I just want as close to that specs as possible for around $600-700 max, I’ve been digging for days and came up with nothing so far looking like the 24MD4KL-B is my best bet and has 500 nits and was codesigned with Apple. great vid. do you think its better to pay the extra for the Thunderbolt version of this monitor for the Apple Studio desktop machine? does this provide any better power/data transfer to the other ports over the non thunderbolt version you reviewed here? presumably the best connection with this monitor is the USB-C port into the Apple Mac?
I have seen this monitor, it does indeed have a good picture. I would like to see you guys look at the Asus Pro Art monitors. They are supposed to be very color accurate, however I have never seen one on display anywhere. @@dookie6734 The further back you are from the monitor, the less of an issue the lower PPI is but I know for some people, that's not possible. From my personal experience, I have a shallow desk (23.5 in) and bought the 32" 4K LG 32UN880-B to replace a 27" 4K monitor. I couldn't stand the lower PPI and ended up returning the 32" monitor. I would definitely recommend checking any 32" 4K monitor in person.
Thank you for the review, I had the same monitor and wondering would you get overheat for the macbook when connecting by the USB C cable that came with the box?
Would the USB C port setup allow for connecting a wired keyboard / mouse? Or could you plug an iPhone into the monitor and transfer xcode builds to it? I ask because it would be amazing to hook up a MacBook Pro with only one or two wires and have all the peripherals handled by the monitor.
I have this setup and it’s perfect. USB-C is the only cable that connects to my Mac mini. Studio monitors for audio, magic keyboard, and Magic Trackpad are all connected to the Dell. So, when my wife wants to use the monitor, speakers, keyboard, and mouse, she just has to plug that one USB-C cable into her MacBook and she gets it all + power. We both do video and audio projects so it’s been an amazing setup.
@@danielflavin3266 How did you connect the Magic Trackpad? By a lightning cable? I had to give up my trackpad for a logitec mouse to connect via a bluetooth dongle…
With monitors, It seems like it is with HiFi purists: ordinary people (like most of us including me) won't notice the difference between setups differing in costs by a thousand percent like those purists do. It's the case with the Apple Studio Display and any other 4k monitor - the higher resolution isn't that much noticeable as you can run a 4k monitor in a 1440 scale like the Studio Display is giving you without any practical disadvantage (aside from theoretical scale-down artifacts that I yet failed to notice - and I did some screenshots to investigate). Brightness (max, min) in general may be a noticeable difference (comparing an iPad, an MacBook Pro Display and a BenQ 4k Monitor for my Macs) as it adds significantly to contrast in (especially) HDR content - but if you aren't into looking movies all the time it doesn't matter. Most Apple displays excel on max brightness. They can make the light of a car blinding you on screen if it appears in a movie. Not relevant for my work doing on apple devices. Displaying black? My BenQ P2700U (promoted by BenQ for its color accuracy to photographers) does display black as black as its bezel with a simple IPS panel - if you see black as "more black" on an Apple display, it is for the additional brightness of those parts of the frame that aren't black. But in general with current consumer technology: black is black. That wasn't the case a few years ago, where background lighting of ordinary displays turned anything black into grey.
I got this model about a month ago for my Mac Mini, and Im in awe. It’s such a fantastic screen for my needs - it has a beautiful display, it’s minimalistic (which for me is the equivalent of a good design, I hate all those
Bells and whistles), it has plethora of ports, more then I will ever need, it turns on very quickly, doesn’t wobble, plenty of brightness (I keep it around 70-75% bright), simple menu with good access via button on the back side panel.
Seriously. For me.:)

It's just a monitor.:)
I for one didn't like Samsung M8 because it seem plasticky.
What screen scaling do you adopt? and does the KVM function perform well? All the best!
@@Eric_Elephant I don't use KVM so I really can't say. I'm using one notch lower the then maximum resolution.
Do you use any other color space besides standard? If you don’t mind would you try to use DCI P3. For me the image has a green tint when I use this color space.
Two recent monitor reviews without a mention of monitor resolution (ppi) and font scaling on 4k monitors. These issues matter a lot to many Mac users.
It is a true 4K display, 3840 x 2160 being the default res for panels advertised as 4K.
came here to say this too! there is a reason apple monitors are 5k and 6k for 32.
Exactly my thoughts. 4K / 27 inch is the bad zone for pro users such as graphic designers. Pixelshift and scaling issues. Don’t go there.
@@vincentnnyc Why 4k 32"? In order to drive it at unscaled 3840 x 2160?
This is a fantastic monitor for my Windows computer, and mediocre for my Mac.
what do you recommend for a replacement? I have an M1 Macbook and running into a bit of analysis paralysis.

Any scaling problems?
@Goat I'm using this monitor in portrait mode as a second monitor. IT works great. I did have a scaling issue though.
Are you having scaling issues on both 32" and 27"?
@Andrew Hamilton I just got myself a Dell 27" Ultrasharp. I changed the 4k resolution one step down because everything was super small. If I scaled one more step I can see now what people mean by "scaling issues". The text is indeed a tiny tiny bit less sharp, but to be honest? I couldn't care less! :) This "scaling issue" is NOT an issue at all! And I have no idea why people so exaggerate this issue, as many other for that matter. I spend months going through reviews on YT, worrying about so much.
My advice - just buy the damn monitor and be done with it! Seriously.

I am considering a 32” version of this, a nice set of reference monitor level speakers dedicated to just the computer and pocketing $800 or $900 as opposed to getting the Studio Display. I love Apple products, but $2000 for a 27” that is height adjustable is just out of line.

Both computers via USB-C?
What's your display scaling settings with your 27inch 4K monitor?
This is the one that is at the top of my list for reasonably priced alternatives to the Apple Studio Display. I plan to get the 32 inch. For monitors with good color accuracy and a nice selection of ports, not much else seems to compare.

The dell is probably the best bang in the current market for Mac owners. It's kinda like choosing which camera to buy or any other tech. You can spend exponentially more for a only slightly better tech, but sometimes that's worth it to the user.

Check out the bjango article link in that video
@@BrandonMilner tried to post a link but was deleted. There is a yt video and online charts that compare macos scaling on 5k, 4k and 2k displays. Im not a tech guy but my understanding is this:
1) macos is more suited for downscaling to 5K or 2K displays (at the resolution that people "ideally" use i.e. not massive or too small icons/text) compared to 4K displays
2) for 4K displays, whilst downscaling is definitely possible, macos has to work "harder" (something like it has to reduce the resolution by half for each cycle) to downscale the "ideal" resolution to fit 4K screens.

I don't do any video editing, so I really don't need a far superior monitor. This has worked out fine for me. Once you have a two monitor set up you won't ever go back to working on a single one.
@@garu629 nice
So you should technically do either 5k or the 1440p for best performance?
correct
You must be using an older Mac. There's no noticeable performance issues on an M1 Mac when scaling to 1440p. You get the high PPI of a 4k monitor at a scale that is perfect for most people. The M1 handles it flawlessly.
@@somelaveenguy6822 maybe. I ended up with double LG 5K monitors regardless (same panel as in iMacs afaik) 😂 Never had this buttery smooth picture quality that's for sure but it came with the normal rotten apple price tag
Hello, does this monitor have a similar color to the Macbook?
I just ordered a refurbished version of this monitor. Fingers crossed.
Is it still a good buy now?
I have just ordered Studio Display and I feel really silly for trying to save some money as I will be waiting two more months before I can actually use my Mac Studio.
when connected to the monitor screen, will charging the battery continuously will cause the battery to over charge on the macbook? I use M1 MAX
So which one has the better resolution and picture feel… the Dell or the Samsung M8?
The Dell SB522A speaker bar is compatible with this monitor.
Thanks, this is a great review. I would seriously love an Apple Studio Display, but the cost is excessive. This looks to be the best alternative.
Yeah ! This is a big problem of the IPS. Cant work at night ! Its like there is no black color at all !!!!
Brightness nits comparison between this one, Samsung M8, and Apple Studio Display?
Compare this to BenQ PD2725U 4K, which one is better and price to performance??
Now that it's a year later, would love to see what monitor you would recommend as an alternative to the Studio. I'm looking to switch from my iMac (2015) to a laptop + monitor set up and can't justify a Studio screen. I am a graphic designer and have been researching.
hey, did you buy something already, what's your opinion now?
I have the Dell P2721Q. Fits also perfectly.
Have done any reviews on BenQ monitors?
Can you separate from the stand?
I hook my MBP M1 Max up to the 32-inch version of this monitor (U3223QE) at work. Love how clean my desk is now. Card readers and ethernet cords all neatly tucked away. I would say the blacks are good, but not MacBook Pro mini-LED good.
Hey, how about the colors? Do Dell’s monitor colors match your MBP when you look at them side by side?
@@p1nkyTF2 I've owned many previous gen Dell monitors and I would say the U3223 is the closest to my Mac out of them all.
I am interested about the ips black tech. If apple don't move to oled in near future they can do some magic with ips black and mini led technology.
No one will go to OLED in near future because OLED hearts your eyes and monitors are used by professionals who are useful resource and should see good.
Was it so difficult for you to lower the monitor to the maximum and teach this position for a couple of seconds?
Same boat as you, with the same
Questions lol
I also got the same m1 max macbook pro, same needs fcpx and more than 400 nits. I refuse to get that studio display I just want as close to that specs as possible for around $600-700 max, I’ve been digging for days and came up with nothing so far looking like the 24MD4KL-B is my best bet and has 500 nits and was codesigned with Apple. They even sell it. Runs $699 but right now amazon have some around $650ish
@@obliviox Still looking...... 🤨

Hey! Do colors of this Dell match with macbook pro retina’s colors?
Thanks for your great review. I'm wandering, how difficult/easy is it to calibrate the colors when using a macbook and this screen for photo editing?
It comes calibrated from the factory. Not sure if this is something that is enough for you..
great vid. do you think its better to pay the extra for the Thunderbolt version of this monitor for the Apple Studio desktop machine? does this provide any better power/data transfer to the other ports over the non thunderbolt version you reviewed here? presumably the best connection with this monitor is the USB-C port into the Apple Mac?
did you got an answer after a year? I have the same question..
What about Scaling? Does this screen display 4k as a native resolution and is it readable or do you have to scale down to 2560x1440?
thank you. between asus pro art pa278qv and dell ultrasharp u2722de which one is better?
I have seen this monitor, it does indeed have a good picture. I would like to see you guys look at the Asus Pro Art monitors. They are supposed to be very color accurate, however I have never seen one on display anywhere. I personally have a 2 monitor set up and one that I am very fond of is the LG UN880 Ergo 32" 4k. it has loads of settings including P3, sRGB, RTS, FPS, and more (custom modes etc) I feel like it too is Very nice on colors and brightness.
For same price range Asus Pro Art is 8 bit monitors.

Great video. Which monitors would you recommend for HDR video editing in Final Cut Pro?
Great presentation! Thoughts about the 32" version?
I've been wondering about that too. I'm not sure if the ppi would be too low at 32 inches. I wonder if they have any on display at best buy...
What is the difference between this display and the Dell Ultrasharp U2722d other than the resolution?
Got 2, love it! Great monitor
Better the benq 4k?
Does the two USB-C port support two connecting two Macs via that interface?
Thank you for the review, I had the same monitor and wondering would you get overheat for the macbook when connecting by the USB C cable that came with the box?
Why would you get overheat?
Would the USB C port setup allow for connecting a wired keyboard / mouse? Or could you plug an iPhone into the monitor and transfer xcode builds to it?
I ask because it would be amazing to hook up a MacBook Pro with only one or two wires and have all the peripherals handled by the monitor.
yes and yes
@@mimandshaindy4906 awesome, thanks!
@@danielflavin3266 cool, thanks for the tip! Glad it's working out for you
@@danielflavin3266 How did you connect the Magic Trackpad? By a lightning cable? I had to give up my trackpad for a logitec mouse to connect via a bluetooth dongle…
Just got mine delivered but no hdmi cord? I always thought they were standard issue with monitors..
why do all PC monitors have a dull looking matte display.
No glare… I prefer matte for office work etc you just need to spend a bit more money to get one that works well. It’s a lot easier on the eyes
Can I connect my Mac mini to this monitor with thunderbolt 4? Or only TB3?
Did you use this as is or do you have to tweak it such as calibration?
I really like the 32 inch LG ergo. Thinking about buying another one
