Anyone else agree that He seems like the MOST peaceful man on Earth? I always loved watching the scenes with Alan Lee with his artistic process in the behind the scenes footage of the Peter Jackson LOTR trilogy 😊
There were Hobbit/Lord of the Rings sketchbooks that were released years and years ago that collected his work, though they're probably out of date now and missing most of his more recent art.
Alan Lee has to be my favourite Tolkien artist, and one of my favourite artists OF ALL TIME! So excited about this interview :D Thank you so much for putting this together, Matt!!
My goodness, it's amazing to see Alan's original and revisited pieces - 30 years interval does beautiful things to these already iconic paintings! The new Hobbit editions are equally stunning!
Spectacular video. Alan Lee has to be one of my favorite artists to interpret Tolkien's work. The limited addition Folio Society edition of "The Hobbit" looks stunning.
Alan is a huge inspiration of mine and one of the reasons that got me into working in the film and television industry as a concept artist. I am super grateful for what he has contributed to pop culture and my own art career.
Oh Matt thanks for this. Alan is my favourite Tolkien artist and that's not taking anything away from any of the others it's just his ethereal touches something deep and gets me in the feels. He is a joy to listen to. Such a beautiful calming soul. I'm glad he was able to talk to you. ❤
Wow...amazing how much your channel has grown over the years...im not sure anyone would have imagined...including yourself...(correct me if im wrong) that you would be interviewing so many well known people.
Alan Lee watching your videos must have unlocked some RUclips achievement. What a gracious gentleman - one to match such a genre defining body of work!
Alan Lee was always my favourite person to listen to on the old DVD commentaries. This was obviously ages before "ASMR" was a thing - which I still don't follow - but I already thought then he had a unique quality for this. He also has a good sense of humour. It's a little painful to notice that a relatively old-looking person then could look significantly older now... Though I think he still looked how I remembered him in some Hobbit production clips.
You know, people from my country translated The Children of Hurin into my country's language, and then the book came out and I of course bought it. And in the website of the publisher, I saw that they are going to publish Beren and Luthien soon, so when that came out, I, again, bought it of course. And then I thought to myself:"They have to publish The Fall of Gondolin next, they had to read it when thet were translating The Children of Hurin, when Christopher says something like that the first age consists of three main tales: Beren and Luthien, The Children of Hurin, and The Fall of Gondolin". And last Sunday I go to the bookstore, and I see that they have published The Lost Tales earlier than The Fall of Gondolin. I was very happy, and I am going to buy it, but it still feels a little out of place. P.S. I love the illustrations in Beren and Luthien, esspecially the illustation of Luthien inside of Tevildo's castle.
31:50: You can actually visit Rivendell (Bruchtal) Mr. Nerd - I'm quite sure Tolkien was inspired by the Lauterbrunnental in the Canton of Berne in Switzerland (30 min from my house) and I've seen the postcard of an elderly man in the alps, which seems to have been the inspiration for the look of Mithrandir. Probably a topic to cover?;)
I've thought for a while now that the next Tolkien book should be "The Voyages of Earendil" as the "4th Great Tale" of the 1st age. And Alan just confirmed he would love to illustrate it! Imagine illustrations of some deep cut moments like Earendil sailing past volcanic islands and fighting Ungoliant!
It's pretty cool that Lee made LOTR even for books not written by Tolkien. There's even an amazing one made for an analysis that depicts Sauron forging the One Ring wearing only a loincloth
Alan Lee's latest edition of Rivendell looks almost as accurate as the valleys of Lauterbrunnen. He's a peaceful man which is linked to why his artworks are so pretty.
The illustrations in the Folio Society edition (the color ones and the smaller b/w ones on the chapter openers) are by and large the same ones that appeared in the 60th anniversary edition published in 1997 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
Mate, I so wish I could be your friend and hang out at yours...and see ALL the amazing stuff you've got. This book!!! And this interview...come on. So good. Thanks for sharing this. How much will the book cost, since it is a limited edition?! PS: I am totally with you when it comes to Rivendell being a top location. My hope is that heaven is like that and more... :)
Gollum's picture kinda reminds me of this video of an elderly chimpanzee on it's deathbed all curled up, and lifts it's head to smile at a long lost friend, maybe Gandalf.
Hello Nerdoftherings my name is Isaiah and I have something important to say to you. Do not be afraid to come to the Lord for his love is for evreyone Shalom Shalom.
Ive recently discovered the podcast. Do you still upload these there? I fall asleep to these interviews lol. Listened to the JRD interview last night, boy, that was a doozy 😂
It seems like the "Nerd of the Rings is checking off names of people to interview from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Peter Jackson is the elusive one they're still trying to secure.
I recently read The Hobbit for the first time. The edition I read was illustrated by Alan Lee and his illustrations were a delight, especially the one of Smaug that was featured on the cover.

Alan Lee's work is so amazing. I would love a full, largescale Middle-earth art book of his work.

The new Rivendell piece is gorgeous!
Alan has such a beautiful voice.
This is amazing, been waiting for this one for years. Alan Lee always seemed like such a lovely mystery to me.

What a wonderful conversation with Alan Lee, who is a fabulous illustrator.

Great interview. Thank you both
He is my #1 Tokien artist
If Alan Lee were talking into a Shure SM7B microphone, it would be over!!!! ♥️

Alan Lee watching Nerd of the Rings gave me the feelings, massive respect 🫡

I've loved Alan's work ever since I got his and Brian Froud's Fairies book back in the early 80s as a gift for Christmas one year.

Definitely top 5 favorite Tolkien artist.
Top 5? For me there are three big ones: Alan Lee, John Howe and Ted Nasmith.
@danubiosalas4231 same! Honorable mention to the Brothers Hildebrandt.
He's my favorite artist, period.
Such a lovely interview. Diving into part 2 now
Alan loves the show! ❤😮
What an incredible interview!
5:26 amazing poise Matt 💯
your work on LOTR series made it perfect!
I found the Bilbo's trolls illustrated by Lee really amazing. I wish their design was re-used for the Jackson Trilogy
Great Content👏🏼
Wait, so Brian Froud and Alan Lee were best friends and worked together for years? [Head explodes]
Alan Lee's latest edition of Rivendell looks almost as accurate as the valleys of Lauterbrunnen. He's a peaceful man which is linked to why his artworks are so pretty.
Thks Matt❤
Veri nice. Cheers❤
I have his Fairies and Castles books, love them both.
Alan Lee is the master 🙏
Alan Lee is such an old soul. I hope to have for an interview with him on my RUclips channel if I'm ever successful enough for it.

There is no doubt he helped to bring the lord of the rings to life!

Would be great to have John Howe over as well!
Love Alan Lee what a great guy and needless to say great artist. Did you ever get your camera case back from the plains of Rohan ?😊
Awesome!
This is so cool
