Wouldn't miss my favorite Tolkien youtuber interviewing one of my favorite Tolkien artists! Alan seems like such a genuine guy , he makes you smile just listening to him speak.
One of my favourite interviews between one of my favourite RUclipsrs and my favourite artists about my favourite author - I couldn't be happier to tune in! :D Thanks, Matt, Alan and Folio Society!
I love to hear that Alan Lee listens to not only BBC Radio 4 (classic - he sounds as well spoken and soothing as a Radio 4 presenter. US folks, think NPR/public radio, etc.), but he also likes BBC Radio 6 Music - the best radio station in the world!! :D Brilliant taste!!
One of my favorite Alan Lee illustrations is the one at the Prancing Pony, just after the Ring slips onto Frodo's finger. The expressions on the faces of the locals are wonderful.
man I would LOVE a compilation of Alan's sketches in a book. I came to the films with a love for Johne Howe's vibrant art through his covers, but watching the special features on the DVDs and seeing the art books of each film, I fell in love with Alan's sketching style
Alan is a major inspiration to my own Tolkien art. The softness of the figures and the grandiose landscapes allows your imagination to work with the image just like Tolkien’s words that give you just enough detail to let your own minds eye interpretation take flight and spirt you away to the Perilous Realm of Faerie. Ted, John, and Alan are great treasures we’re all blessed to enjoy.
Alan Lee is such an impressive artist and also a genuinely nice guy. I hope I get the chance to meet him some day, since he doesn't seem to have any social media it's quite hard to know where he's going to make an appearance!
Your interviewing style is amazing, man. You're really respectful and you ask erudite questions. Edit: 'lively' is certainly one way to describe Radio 6! It's an eclectic mix of music to be sure.
My hope is Harper Collins will release a matching edition to this years 70th anniversary edition, which will hopefully include the changes and new paintings for this edition. Even though the price is too steep for me, I think the 2022 LOTR and 2024 Hobbit Limited Editions are the most beautiful books I have ever seen.
When you asked Alan what other books he also enjoys reading besides the Lord of the Rings, what was it? I could not make out the title or any of the characters' names. Didn't sound like a very happy read, but I am still curious because I love his artistic style.
The Tolkien youtuber who sold his soul to Amazon for a quick buck. If this guy has anything to do with a product, I won't be buying it. Shame on you, Folio Society for choosing a sell-out to work with - there are many other Tolkien you-tubers whose integrity is still intact, that you could have chosen from.
That content creator didn't bankroll or make Folio's illustrated edition of the LOTR books. Besides those books have been sold out for quite some time now.
Giving the show a chance and criticizing it *after* seeing it hardly qualifies as "selling your soul." lol. It's quite a shame people would rather throw around lies than actually watch my commentary, but I suppose this behavior is pretty common online.
Oh boy so much misinformation in this thread! First, it's a big shame that you're slandering someone and then calling HIM out for not having integrity. First, he didn't sell his soul to Amazon for a quick buck. I can see that you haven't watched his videos or you're just deliberately ignoring his many critiques of RoP, and if it's the latter that just makes you disingenuous at best. The people you're calling Tolkien RUclipsrs whose integrity are still intact are just the people you agree with and who hate RoP and Amazon as much as you do. I'm kind of surprised you're talking about Tolkien, whose work literally works with and embraces various myths and viewpoints and writes about that so much, you're being slanderous towards someone because he interacted with the RoP folks. Good on the Folio Society for choosing someone who has integrity and don't base their channels on hating others.

Agreed! You can tell how much he loves doing this. :)
Watched this at least a dozen times too. Am I the only one who puts this channel on every night to fall asleep to ?
Fantastic interview. Thank you both
All of the Folio society editions are gorgeous! Can't wait to see The Hobbit. Thanks for the interview, Mr. Lee!
Their books are truly fantastic!

Thanks so much! This was truly a delight!

Not only that, but Alan knows Zdzisław Beksiński, one of my favourite horror/gothic artists!? What a small world!!

Such a lovely interview with one of my favorite illustrators! I can’t wait to hopefully get my hands on this one!
It’s a really impressive edition! I love how big the book is, the quality, the illustrations - it’s all great!

Such a wholesome interview. I wanna be friends with you both, guys! Thanks for this :)

Waking up early tomorrow to grab me a copy (hopefully #2) at 8am sharp west coast timezone.
Wonderful
Will it sell out in a day? Of course it will.
What do the runes on your hat say? I tried using the elder Futhark but I see runes that must be Tolkien's alone.
They say "Nerd of the Rings" in dwarvish. The literal translation is "Enthusiastic Knower" for "Nerd". haha.
@@NerdoftheRings haha awesome!!
Radio 4, obviously, Radio 3, expected, but Radio 6, Alan?! Maybe Alan is Brat.

@@DragonHeart613 nope, he didn't bankroll or make it. Please point to me specifically where it says or he says it does. 😘
