my danes are 175 lbs and they get 2 c of food 2 times a day - Victor - if they get more they get fat. plus they get food toppers- grass fed beef , free range chicken, etc, organ meat raw eggs, bone broth as well.
I have a 100 lb Dane/ boxer dog. I feed about 1 1/2 cups dry dog food twice a day. I ride my horse a few times a week and we go for an hour or two. She runs most of the way. She is 7 yrs old and she looks amazing. She gets table scraps once in a while.
How useful, luck will have it my Bichon Frise weighs 20 pounds so this was made for me. Will be making sure I stick to the recommendations. You're brilliant. Thanks Doc.
I give my puppy Orijen puppy food mixed with homemade food. We have 4 adult dogs, and now beagle pup. I cooked 5 lbs turkey last week, with sweet pot, brown rice, spinach, peas. Carrots, little pumpkin purée, coconut oil, seaweed calcium. That lasted 1 week. Uggggggg lol I feel like we went through way to much. I need to calculate this better. I have two beagles, my mom has two Pomeranians, and poodle. Anyway love your video. I take sissy to vet tomorrow. Hopefully they don’t frown from homemade food. Some vets have no clue on dog nutrition, just like doctors with keto and real food. Lol

I have been watching your videos, I find them to be the ones I trust the most. Both cooked and raw. I would absolutely love your book. I run an outreach for homeless and near homeless folks with pets. Most of them feed cheap crap kibble because of the cost factor. We try to provide higher end kibble and canned through donations. Many have asked me about raw/homemade meals. Your recipes can be made very budget friendly. I feel that even without the extra nutritional supplement powder it would be beneficial to give them a simple recipe to add to the crap kibble to help their dogs. Thank you for giving us simple affordable homemade/raw recipes. Ps I am the unoffical crazy poodle lady in Omaha Ne. Tula is a doll!
I'm really bad at this. My daughter just moved back home after a breakup and let me know our dogs are too fat. Unfortunately both are rescues and the new one still has some food aggression issues. Being large dogs I'd rather have plump than fighting and unnecessary vet bills. Maybe what we all need is plenty of food and extra play/exercise time.
This is so simple! I was looking for this guidelines when I started to make homemade food last year. Couldn't find a simple one. The proportion I make is around 45% protein, 45% vegetables, 10% carbohydrate. I had no idea about the portion. So I asked the vet about my dogs healthy weight, then I just adjusted accordingly. 😄

My vet has said it's 100g per 10kg of body weight plus a little bit extra. Ribs should be felt but not seen. So many owners over feed their dogs and over treat them.

In prep for the cooked steak recipe you said 1/3. 1/3 of what? a cup,a quart a gallon a percentage based on the dogs weight. a 1/3 of the entire recipe(beef,carrots.rice of equal portions) Im so frustrated. Ready to throw my hands up and say to hell with or break down crying

Thanks Doc, for the guidelines. I was told once that you should be able to see a "waist" on your dog to gauge overweight. At the time I had a great dog who always acted like "where's the rest?" when fed recommended amt (on the bag of food) 😊
I fed my maremma according to the directions on the package and she got way overweight. LGD types have evolved to be very food efficient. Shepherds couldn't be killing a sheep everyday to feed the dogs. My malinois on the other hand was eating a lot of 26/16 and getting skinnier and pooping more. I put him on 30/20 and he started putting on weight. Bear in mind that he was running maybe 60 miles a day at the time. Now he's a homebody and does fine on a lower protein/fat kibble. I think bony sighthounds need a higher protein/fat diet.
I cook for my Doberman plus he eats kibble i want to get him off kibble completely but I’m just very confused on how much I should feed him of the homemade food by itself. He eats twice a day and he still seems hungry all day I’m pretty sure he can eat the whole bag of kibble. he’s very active and hes 90 lbs right now. I cook for him ground turkey with organs (hearts,liver, kidney, and veggies and we rotate meats weekly plus I make bone broth or chicken broth for him.
Dogs have sensitive noses, I know its said 7x stronger than humans, but Ive heard much higher numbers. Ive noticed my dog observing dish soap residue on bowls. And he pretty much abhores canned food, okay he downs a can every once in a while. I noticed your use of wooden spoons, is that a hint? The flat clean, dry ceramic bowls, similarly is that a hint? What tiny thing could cause a dog to reject a entire bowl of food? If you place too much food, dry or wet canned or pouched but probably not steak, into a bowl, will they reject it based on it being much more than they can finish, wont even touch it? Hint Im pretty sure I answered all these questions yes.

I just love Tula. What an adorable little sweetie! Im having a hard time finding a little companion for my Coco. I only adopt homeless dogs and we never seem to have any little ones here. Or they get snatched up right away. Just hope its good people. Sadly there are mostly pitbulls which we also love, but I need my daughter and grandkids on board and its not going well. Our other two had horrible health problems including cancer and they're afraid. I have to keep trying to get my kid to realize that we gave them a good loving life. Far better than being stuck in a cage forever. I miss our pibbles so much. Feel so sad seeing how many are abandoned because of the horrible things HUMANS have caused. In 17yrs we never had a issue with our loveys. Only the sick. Thanks Doc. I was really rooting for Tula to get to eat; actually to see YOU TWO eating together lol! That was a perfect me meal. My shar pei is about 50 55 Lbs I need to get him reweighed but around there. He only seems to eat about 1 scoop full marked as 1 cup of a dry kibble and about half that at supper time. He seems be not a big eater but I do recall I would give 2 full scoops and the vet said he was overweight. And now summer is here he doesn't eat much with the hot weather. The vet I was with did say hes weight problem could have something to do with getting neutered early but hes not the most active dog.
This is strange. My active, two-year-old, 25 pound beagle eats less than Tula. Other than occasional snacks and treats, he daily gets 4 oz burger with 1/2 cup kibble and he's getting a bit chunky. If he were to be fed as much as Tula, he be an absolute porker. I wonder if it could be a calorie difference in the kibble brands...

I buy good holistic kibble for my dogs but I buy them very low fat. And I also under feed them, if I didn’t they would be overweight. But, I feel so sorry for them because they act as they they are so hungry all the time. What can I do? My little Jack Russell Beagle is a couple of pounds overweight 28lbs and she only gets 1/4 cup of 7% fat food twice a day. My lab pit mix is 40lbs, and I only give her 1.5 cups a day split into two meals.
My chihuahua eats a good amount everyday, dry and wet food. Maybe its just her genes but she looks so skinny. Just in the stomache area. She is very tall for a Chihuahua. I've tried to bulk her up many times to no avail. Any suggestions?

I think you need to make it more clear that you mean 1 cup of rice measured AFTER it is cooked. In recipes, rice is almost always measured pre-cooked and as a result I've been giving her too much rice. I just caught in this video that you measured the rice after cooking, not before.
My dog is definitely overweight. For the last 3 months I've feed her a little over half the suggested amount of the home cooked formula each day. Yet she isn't loosing any weight. How much can I safely cut her back to?
If my Lab sniffed a can of canned food he would go on a kibble strike. Honestly I see no reason to feed a dog canned food. Terribly teeth unhealthy in my opinion.
Can you please give me the amounts of ingredients for a 5kg Zuchon ? I have looked on the Internet and am confused! I have given up giving my dog kibble because of all the questionable ingredients in it ,have been buying wet food and it has among other ingredients carageenan .I have tried to buy the best wet food making sure the first ingredient is either chicken or turkey but carrageenan is still added to the so-called "better dog foods" Am at my wits end and then came across your videos and want to make my dog home made food but need the correct amounts of ingredients and supplements .He weighs 5kg .
Hi, instead of or in addition to referring to cups and cans, it would be more helpful to mention the grams or ounces of the food...especially for those of us who cook fresh meals for our dogs
I don't think the ancestors of my dog ate kibbles, or two times a day or one third of proteins, carbs and fats. The ate sometimes once a day, real food( meat , bones and organs) and maybe some carbs, maybe and. certainly not coming from rice or any other cereal.
Hi just to say i love your channel and thankyou for the advice you give on all different things, I really need some advice on how much to feed my dog she is roughly 25kg...she has been getting a lot of sore paws ect with itching ,i have tried everything cut her biscuits out ect used,coconut oil, nonstinky stuff,tried her on Ava dried dog food ect ect anyway she has also been on medication which puts her weight on...but still comes back, my vet said to put her on PURINA PRO PLAN VET DIETS HA HYPOALLERGENIC DRY Dog Food ...so now I am trying her on this but the instructions don't make sense or I don't understand them...with this being a different dog food i am not sure how much to give her,she has been on this 2 days now i feed her twice a day,in the morning she gets 3 quaters of a mug with a little of the ava,mixed with hot water,she wouldnt eat it so i mixed a bit of non stinky stuffy,so she ate it,at night i give the same withot water and no stinky stuff..she seem fine ...thankyou for your advise x

I would never use sunflower oil, canola oil, or corn oil. They are highly inflammatory. I use avocado oil.

My 8lb yorkies eat 1/2 cup to 1 cup of home cook dog food and nibble on kibble throughout the day..
My mother fed her dog canned food. He nearly starved to death. Vet said it was mostly water. Of course that was fifty years ago now.

Quality animal protein should be atleast ½ of the meal dogs need more meat than carbs or veggies

I don't give her more that 16 ounces... two cups a day, she is so inactive, slow. No weight loss is happening. When I give my 60 lb dog two cans of good dog food she gains weight. Clarity????
No oil for cooking but coconut, olive, avacado....or beef fat (tarrow) or duck fat.
I buy good holistic kibble for my dogs but I buy them very low fat. And I also under feed them, if I didn’t they would be overweight. But, I feel so sorry for them because they act as they they are so hungry all the time. What can I do? My little Jack Russell Beagle is a couple of pounds overweight 28lbs and she only gets 1/4 cup of 7% fat food twice a day. My lab pit mix is 40lbs, and I only give her 1.5 cups a day split into two meals.

My chihuahua eats a good amount everyday, dry and wet food. Maybe its just her genes but she looks so skinny. Just in the stomache area. She is very tall for a Chihuahua. I've tried to bulk her up many times to no avail. Any suggestions?

I think you need to make it more clear that you mean 1 cup of rice measured AFTER it is cooked. In recipes, rice is almost always measured pre-cooked and as a result I've been giving her too much rice. I just caught in this video that you measured the rice after cooking, not before.

Can you please give me the amounts of ingredients for a 5kg Zuchon ? I have looked on the Internet and am confused! I have given up giving my dog kibble because of all the questionable ingredients in it ,have been buying wet food and it has among other ingredients carageenan .I have tried to buy the best wet food making sure the first ingredient is either chicken or turkey but carrageenan is still added to the so-called "better dog foods" Am at my wits end and then came across your videos and want to make my dog home made food but need the correct amounts of ingredients and supplements .He weighs 5kg .

I don't think the ancestors of my dog ate kibbles, or two times a day or one third of proteins, carbs and fats. The ate sometimes once a day, real food( meat , bones and organs) and maybe some carbs, maybe and. certainly not coming from rice or any other cereal.

Hi just to say i love your channel and thankyou for the advice you give on all different things, I really need some advice on how much to feed my dog she is roughly 25kg...she has been getting a lot of sore paws ect with itching ,i have tried everything cut her biscuits out ect used,coconut oil, nonstinky stuff,tried her on Ava dried dog food ect ect anyway she has also been on medication which puts her weight on...but still comes back, my vet said to put her on PURINA PRO PLAN VET DIETS HA HYPOALLERGENIC DRY Dog Food ...so now I am trying her on this but the instructions don't make sense or I don't understand them...with this being a different dog food i am not sure how much to give her,she has been on this 2 days now i feed her twice a day,in the morning she gets 3 quaters of a mug with a little of the ava,mixed with hot water,she wouldnt eat it so i mixed a bit of non stinky stuffy,so she ate it,at night i give the same withot water and no stinky stuff..she seem fine ...thankyou for your advise x
