George Penwell Janis wasn't hideous. She was natural, no cosmetics and go look for her nude pictures, she had a petite, good figure. The ones with all the bead necklaces.

Funny to watch some very major stars of the day having a conversation, with a competent moderator interested in the discussion more than pushing their brand. And it's amazing how damn charismatic Janis Joplin was.
According to Janis's sister, Joplin was a reader and a painter. In third grade her teacher told her mother she had drawing talent. This art talent developed throughout school years. Janis was seen by her school as an artist and it was that art community who were essentially "beatniks." And of course from Beatniks came the hippie movement. But the process for Janis started earlier than most people think. Her parents were not religious. They encouraged all of their children to express themselves. Her father was an intellectual. She would have long conversations with him. She was extremely intelligent and not just the image that she personified on stage. And this video proves that. Yes Janis had problems with being rejected in school but that did not floor her or destroy her. She simply moved to place where she could do her thing. In the end, she became too casual with heroin because she had dried out in 69 and proved to herself that she could kick it. But that confidence led to future recreational with the attitude that she could handle it. She got a hold of pure heroin which had not been checked out by her dealer's chemist friend in advance and it killed her and 9 other people in the LA area in Oct of 70. This was not a desperate act as a lot of people want to make of it. She shot up the normal dose of heroin that she had always taken, put everything back in her dresser, went downstairs to buy a pack of cigarettes. She came back upstairs, started to undress when she died instantly while standing up. She never knew what hit her. In fact when she collapsed, she hit face first into her night stand and broke her nose. She was discovered by her manager John Cooke 10+ hours later after she had not shown up for her last recording session.
Wow this is quite an amazing discussion. You never see this now a days in talk shows. With this deep thought provoking conversation. Raquel is a lot brighter than I would of first thought. And all three of his guests are fascinating people.

Yeah, Douglas Fairbanks, Janis Joplin, and Raquel Welsh were not three people I ever expected to see in a room together. The variety on display is pretty cool. And there's something... less rehearsed about the way they interact than I feel would happen on a modern talk show. I feel like if three interesting people from different walks of life were allowed to come together like this today, they would make more of an effort to keep the conversation light.
@@danselcke8448 I absolutely agree. It was June 25, 1970, and there are 3 different celebrities of 3 very different people. great interview. and this is how most of the talk shows were, just like this. casual, with the stars not so much about promoting their stuff, but sitting around, like regular people, with regular views.... oh how i miss those days..........
Raquel was trying to sound old-school and serious about "the work" when she, as well as anybody, had to know that people are interested in the personal lives of actors and actresses. It just isn't realistic to write magazine articles that focus totally on filmmaking and acting. That's why we have TV programs like "Inside the Actors Studio", for example. No wonder Raquel Welch is mostly forgettable while we all remember and love Janis.
I think RAQUEL'S point was quite good actually. At the time Dennis Hopper was very big because of Easy Rider and his quite eccentric lifestyle (e.g. a marriage to Michelle Phillips that lasted 8 days, drug use, etc). Raquel's point of his talent being much bigger than his eccentricities was true of Dennis and many, many other people INCLUDING Janis Joplin. But all the press cares about is the "lifestyle". I'd say Raquel was quite right and making a good point.
That is all BS!!! Who cares about Hoppers acting. It is his weird lifestyle that made him different and somewhat interesting to the public. Poor old Raquel and also Cavettt..Two phonies.
0havent seen Fairbanks in years. Today young children dont know who he was. Their should be a series about al, elder actors from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. This generation should know all about these peeps that made the Industry!!!!
I always.think of the song Summertime when i see or hear Janis Joplin?she.was so. Or such a cool Woman and I'm.not alone in thinking this God love Janis Joplin.
It's clear to me that these people knew how to communicate properly & intelligently. Everyone was entitled to their own opinion/beliefs but in a way that if something didn't align with someone it was discussed in a polite manner..not @ all like today's stupidity of if you disagree it's cool to name call along with a decent chance of getting your ass kicked for all to view.😒
I've read most of the comments here and am disgusted that most of you were putting these 2 woman against each other..smh.. it was a discussion, that's it and that's all.. shame on all of you!
Janis and Raquel were coming from two different points of view about Dennis Hopper. Dennis was stuck in between these two ladies in a sense. One one hand you've got Dennis Hopper the hippie who Janis related to, and on the other you've got Dennis Hopper the actor who Raquel related to. So they're both kinda saying to one another, "Oh no, he belongs with my crowd, we understand him more."
Some of us really do believe beauty radiates from within. The spirit, the vibe, etc. Obviously I'll never get to meet either, but had I had a chance on that day in 1970, I'd have *leaped* over Raquel's superficial shell to get to Janis. De gustibus non est disputandum. Peace.
@dedbusted you spoke my sentiments exactly. Take me back please!! Characters of such depth, human stories, intellect, etc. Today is just a overwhelm of sound-bites / sensationalism.....thank you for posting!
Both Janis and Raquel had right points of view regarding Dennis Hopper, it's just that Janis was talking more matter of fact about it and Raquel was kind of getting off on how emotional she could be about it. Janis was just sorta like "No need to let it get ya uptight, it just is what it is."
I MISS interview shows in this style & format. Imagine here in 2010 seeing an interview and conversation among 3 "random" people of public interest! Dick Cavett was the top of the genre.
The overly-tanned guy is actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr, son of Douglas Fairbanks who started (I believe) United Artists along with Mary Pickford and others. Janis was extremely smart. Raquel Welch was beautiful and Janis, of course, had a beautiful spirit.
People with differing opinions that were able to express their thoughts without resorting to name calling and hurt feelings. Oh how times have changed in Hollywood!
+themotownboy1 I hate those ones................I'm just getting a read on this? BOO ....I like that one with Mae West...What............I got educated............Cheers
Kudos to Douglas Fairbanks for letting Janis & Raquel participate in the discussion. Nowadays, the guest in the chair dominates, and no one else dare interfere.
Janis and Douglas were both brilliant and very honest and good listeners to what all were saying. Raquel though lovely, came off totally daft. She was repeating herself and not listening to anything anyone else said. Very daft, very stubborn. Hope now she is 75 she no longer behaves like that.
Back when 2 (or more) utterly different viewpoints could be discussed in dialogue and everyone still respected. Take a lesson from history please, social media (& humanity in general)
Janis totally had Racquel speechless the JOPLIN knew her stuff SIMPLE and the best part was she wasn't trying to outsmart her it just came naturally to her!!! Janis was a legend 🙌 can we please have her back lord 😢
What a contrast of Raquel and Janis, glamour and beauty, and well the exact opposite ... I think we need more glamour again..something to strive for instead of surrendering
I never got the impression that they were arguing or trying to 1 up the other. They just disagreed. Doubt they were concerned w who looked the best but others sure are
I love the discourse between Janis and Raquel, I wish I could have seen the whole show. This may be wrong, but I with it had just the two women on that show.
Owns? Raquel was right. Look where we are now. People are famous for nothing, because an individual's ability isn't being held to celebrate...only column inches.
I feel these older talk shows had more going for them & when every body shared it was more interesting tv was a differant world then & now is some thing else
Peter Perfect Well, she doesn't hold a candle to Janis Joplin, in the intelligence stakes in my opinion. Janis put her in her place didn't she? Raquel sounded so fake and contrived and her argument was pretty weak really.
This was an "odd" pairing of guests. The chemistry here is a little "off" because the guests are so different and don't exactly "gel" with each other. It would have been much better if the guests were from the same tree, let's say, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and John Lennon. That chemistry would have been dynamite, and there would have been more than water in the cups!
I think welch was tring to say theres more to an artist than just their image and u can see why because she is a sex symbol and feels she has more to offer... whereas janice comes from a place of authenticity.. what you see is what you get... both females have their point. Both are authentic.
Refreshing that nobody is to be funny or appeal to a shallow, hyped-up audience, or there to promote some new project - just informed and interesting people using their intellects, having a calm and rational discussion.
This is 1970. When Dennis Hopper is all the rage. In 2020, 50 years later, we now are aware the enormous praise heaped on him here has turned out to be unjustified. Hopper is interesting in that he has endured less for his artistic merit than for his place as a cultural relic. One confined to the 1960s and it’s counter culture vibe.

Joe April Raquel really got screwed by the industry. I think she was, and is, quite elegant.
Elegant and stupid.
Joe April you think Raquel didn't get into the 60's party/drug scene?
YES!!! Janis is the most beautiful ❤️
Intelligent give and take. This is amazing.
I meant to say in the comment below that Welch was always contrived (not contrite).
Just look at the talent he had on his stage, just to shoot the shit for an hour.. amazing... 3 people who excelled at their crafts.
wish more shows would be loose like this one
0havent seen Fairbanks in years. Today young children dont know who he was. Their should be a series about al, elder actors from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. This generation should know all about these peeps that made the Industry!!!!
Fairbanks looks dashing as ever.
Well of course you do.
I dont think they disliked eachother-just disagreed
Janis and Raquel were coming from two different points of view about Dennis Hopper. Dennis was stuck in between these two ladies in a sense. One one hand you've got Dennis Hopper the hippie who Janis related to, and on the other you've got Dennis Hopper the actor who Raquel related to. So they're both kinda saying to one another, "Oh no, he belongs with my crowd, we understand him more."
candy jones High Five 🖐
I feel the same. Dont think they were concerned w who looked the best but looks like alot of people are after reading many of the comments
What beautiful woman. Oh and Racquel brushes up well but Janis will always be number one for me.
Peace.
Fairbanks was such a switched on guy and clearly very humble
THIS IS SOME GREAT GROUP ! !
This is a pretty in depth discussion for considering it's meant to be a light entertainment chat show. Good stuff.
Douglas Fairbanks was such a name dropper.
+themotownboy1 I hate those ones................I'm just getting a read on this? BOO ....I like that one with Mae West...What............I got educated............Cheers
themotownboy1 but omg, that horrid tan.
Exactly. He was Doug's son... and a talent in his own right.
No. It was his life.
And talking about famous people is interesting. Just think!
Gosh, what a line up for a talk show. Janice Joplin, Racquel Welch and Douglas Fairbanks. Wow!!!!!
An intellectual discussion!! University stuff!!
sweet biscuits. Mr Douglas Fairbanks Jr is a looker. great looking man. and debonair.
yes talk shows were definitely better then. More enjoyable and less hype. You can't help but want to watch this for it's fullness and all.
Before Americans sounded like robots , luv them girls xxx
Back when 2 (or more) utterly different viewpoints could be discussed in dialogue and everyone still respected. Take a lesson from history please, social media (& humanity in general)
Janis totally had Racquel speechless the JOPLIN knew her stuff SIMPLE and the best part was she wasn't trying to outsmart her it just came naturally to her!!! Janis was a legend 🙌 can we please have her back lord 😢
raquel wore 6 inches of makeup in this clip janis wore sweat. in terms of beauty theres no comparisons here.
An intelligent interviewer!!!
An extinct species!!!
A few months later Janis was dead. So sad.
Janis totally owns Raquel here. What a woman. Fair play Raquel is pretty but Janis is like a moodstone, right for any occasion.
You're a moron, Janice was a dope on dope
Panopticon you are absolutely right about Janice 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Owns? Raquel was right. Look where we are now. People are famous for nothing, because an individual's ability isn't being held to celebrate...only column inches.
Panopticon... Raquel is pure fluff nothing more
@@chrisc3697 shut up Joe.
I feel these older talk shows had more going for them & when every body shared it was more interesting tv was a differant world then & now is some thing else
Raquel Welch = Genetic Perfection
She has an IQ of 160! Like I said Genetic Perfection.
Peter Perfect Well, she doesn't hold a candle to Janis Joplin, in the intelligence stakes in my opinion. Janis put her in her place didn't she? Raquel sounded so fake and contrived and her argument was pretty weak really.
Charlotte Arena I wasn't one putting another in their place, it was two opinions expressed from two individuals with different backgrounds.
Peter Perfect Genetic? Look up her high school photos. She had a good plastic surgeon. Everyone knew that.
+Peter Perfect You might be thinking of Jayne Mansfield's famous IQ of 165. How did we know about it, and that it was true? Why, Jayne said so!
this clip is like the bar scene in star wars
Mr d cavett had a relaxing manner with the guests no ego and did not speak over them or cut them off
I think Janis was way prettier than Raquel. Janis was down to earth, while to me it seems, Raquel was more...arrogant, maybe?
omg... trolling overtime
Racquel is incredibly beautiful.
@@mikesnaturalroast7748 She will be 80 in 2020 ...
love the way the camera man looks at raquels legs
Refreshing that nobody is to be funny or appeal to a shallow, hyped-up audience, or there to promote some new project - just informed and interesting people using their intellects, having a calm and rational discussion.
b4 people knew that tanning could kill you...
