- How much extra performance can you get for £1,200? With the Mountune Volkswagen Golf R that's enough for an ECU remap and an induction kit which increase power by 60hp to 360hp. So is this enough to beat a standard Audi RS3, which has 400hp? To find out we decided to drag race them. And we shoved in a standard Golf R too so you can see the difference between tuned and stock. BTW the Mountune Golf R also had upgraded brakes so you can see the effect of those in the brake test too.

@@groundkramer the golf r's definitely do not make more than 300whp from factory. It's not underrated like the gti is but that's due to 4 motion awd compared to fwd which has less drive terrain loss. So the stock BHP numbers from the golf r are pretty much the whp figures and the gti reads about 5-15 hp higher depending on the type of dyno (mustang, dynapack, dynojet)

killerkhalsa27 yeah fwd have less drivetrain loss then awd. My 08 gti put down 314whp on a dynojet stage 3 with meth. Hoping my R will put down similar numbers with a JB4 tune, TBE, CAI, Inlet pipe, BOV.

I'm guessing that Audi reduced the RS3 launch due to similar new EU laws, the 2015 car launches at far higher revs and boost, that slingshot effect seems to be more sedate now.
The 2015-2016 RS3 has the older engine with 367 hp. The 2017-2018 RS3 has the new engine with 400 hp but without those nasty opf-filters, so they are the fastest. It would be interesting too see if this 2019 "400" hp RS3 can even beat one with 367 hp, I'm not so sure...

Why is the RS3 slower than before? It used to do 12.2 i every dragrace they used it in.. The sound is much quieter aswell. Smelling some EU regulations here.. ☹️
I guess the EU OPF ruined the sound (as well as adding more exhaust back pressure), and they probably detuned it a bit to meet with strict emissions regulations.

@@Scouse.Malinois nope, golf is nothing special, has a boring 4 cylinder engine and can only be tuned to 400bhp, anything over that is asking for trouble.
Rs3 can easily be tuned to 520 bhp, but can go to 1000bhp on stock block.

I think it would be super interesting to compare older performance cars like for example a Mercedes C55 AMG vs a modern sports car like a Golf GTI or Golf R and see how fast cars have actually become in the past 15 years. That would be super awesome!

I have a 2018 Pre EU stifled RS3 with 400HP and it's quicker to 60 than the 2019 model.

change turbocharger, exhaust, and a tune. and you have a golf R, that is capable to race a Lambo Hurracan. Can your audi do that? Check MCM videos with the golf.
In the 'in gear' test it took you longer to say 'go' after the countdown and it seemed to me like the rs3 went a little earlier. Also would use the v box braking

The ttrs prefacelift 2017 does 1/4 mile 11.7sec the new facelifted version 2019 does it in 12.1 lol this is quite a downgrade and the sound is numb shiiiet regulations!

The APR stage 1 ecu & tcu tune is similar but extra bhp. Insane mod and well worth the money! Transforms the Golf R immensely!

I love this type of video. In Australia, the price difference between R and RS3 is about AUD40K. So it's more tempting to tune the R than spending another 40K.
And I'd still rather have the Audi RS3 for the sound alone.
Same here, but the pre-facelifted one. The new OPF-models just sound like goddamn vacuum-cleaner, the RS3 is no exception. There are tons of cars coming with that bullshit now which is pretty unfortunate.

You should really use something else then a count down via walkie-talkie, especially when it’s this close in performance.
The first race from 50mph is obviously to Matts favour as he says ”go” out of rythm and floors it when he knows he will call it.
The second race, Matt actually says ”go” slower than the initial rythm, which makes the RS3 anticipate the ”go” and results in an earlier launch.
A central countdown with a fixed rythm shouldn’t be that hard to fix..
Mountune in the VW segment is a great thing. They’ve done amazing work with Ford for ages.
Just got a Golf R 7.5 in October straight away I was very underwelmed by the performance my las car was a BMW 330D with a stage 1 tune, within a week I had the Mountune stage 1 software and the gearbox tune along with airbox and turbo hose, what a difference you can really feel the torque and the power is usable in all weathers my friend has a standard M4 and its every bit as quick when its dry, In the wet the plucky little Golf leaves the M4.
This for me is a great car with the mountune upgrade, I have been a BMW fanboy for years but I love the Golf also looked at the S3 but it in my opinion isnt as nice a car the interior maybe slightly better quality wise but I prefer the "sleeper" look of the Golf R such a great car.

On this video at 1:23 just before the race starts it'd be great to see a summary table comparing the bhp, torque, price, claimed 0-60 etc on future videos, save trying to remember what each one is. Alternatively at the end of the race for people that are interested. Especially if they're looking to buy one of the cars 🤓😜 this would have been ideal on the hot hatch showdown with 5 or 6 cars to compare 😂

I bet the Mountune also has a dsg remap too, if they went to the trouble of mapping the engine, fitting a 1k brake upgrade and it also looks lowered, there's no way it doesn't have a more aggressive dsg map to go with its fancy paddles. This would explain the auto kickdown advantage.

Mk7.5 DSG Golf R all the way. Buying mine here in the states actually within the next few months. On an APR stage 2 tune and intercooler upgrade, you’re looking at 1/4 at around 12 seconds. Not bad for a 2L!

Actually the RS3 has the DQ500 gearbox. The mk7.5R has a DQ381 en a normal mk7R has the DQ250 gearbox. The mk7.5R also has the exstra haldex coupling upfront that transfers more torque to the back than the normal 7R.

I started off thinking: "what a pointless video". But as I am writing this, I think the it's really on point and the real winner is the standard golf R. None of them are going to win beauty contests or drag races with the real players. Golf R might be the slowest (by half a second) but it is the cheapest of the three. The poster on my wall is still going to be a Lambo. I'd rather have the R in my garage and 12k in my bank account.

Did he say 46 grand for the RS3?? Id get the pre-facelifted one, ive seen them priced at around 33 grand, still expensive but 13K cheaper than new. You could put a bit of money into tuning it and it would still be cheaper than the new car and faster too
Even for a 2017 Rs3 this is still pretty accurate. Generally a healthy stage 1 golf r will jump ahead of a stock rs3. A stage 2 golf r will continue to pull. This is with both real world experience and also trap speeds of other golf r/rs3 users
Is the 2019 rs3 only slower in Europe or is it also slower in the United States?
I believe the OPF in the exhaust is only for the Euro market.

So many clueless people bang on about getting more and more HP, but if you don't have the torque then you'll lose.
Loads of horsepower is great for higher speed runs, but for getting off the line and for rolling races, you just cannot compete with a car with loads of torque.

With the Mountune Golf R they have probably done ECU upgrade on the gearbox it is why that kicks down quicker
