    The way he plays the bee makes me so jealous. He has wonderful dynamics, phrasing, and expression.

      its soo hard to have a big dynamic range or controll when playing this piece, amazing

    Very musical. Szigeti has such a nice understanding of this piece and it' really enjoyable to watch over, and over, and over again. One of the reasons why I like it so much is because of beautiful phrasing. I wish he was alive today!

    François Schubert (né Franz Anton Schubert (the Younger); 22 July 1808, Dresden - 12 April 1878, Dresden) composed concert pieces, études, and chamber music, but is largely known for the bagatelle The Bee, a perpetuum mobile for violin and piano - a piece that is often misattributed to Franz Schubert due to the similarity of the two men's names.

    This piece was only slightly known in America until a small boy, Stuart Canin, played it on the Fred Allen radio show in the late 1930s. This was the precipitating incident of the long-running Jack Benny/Fred Allen "feud" during which Jack Benny would also play this piece, boosting "The Bee" into the public consciousness and making it a piece the public imagined was a staple of the repertoire. I'm sure that (and its brevity) has a lot to do with it being chosen for Szigeti's spot in this film.

    Bette Davis! According to Wiki, she worked tirelessly to support this club which featured entertainment to servicemen during the war. I just read the article and one can only think, what meaninglessness our lives are today.

    Amazing musician, the phrasing has so much flow and is so natural sounding. It’s definitely a case of technique is there purely to serve the music.

    love how he doesn't move his legs around a lot like the other new internationally renowned violinists. He shows emotion through his violin bowings. Anyways, thanks for uploading this video. :)

    Listen to their heeeuuy-like cheer at the end, it's very different from the classy, reserved clapping you'd hear today

    • @sneddley
      @sneddley 7 лет назад +2

      Not necessarily, this is a staged performance which was from a movie.
      It's very possible maybe likely that the cheers of "bravo", etc. were added later to give the scene more excitement. Anyway It's taking place in the "Hollywood Canteen" not a concert hall so I believe it makes sense.

      This video is from a movie, the Hollywood Canteen (1944). Apparently, the Hollywood Canteen was reserved for soldiers fighting in World War II.

      Szigeti, along with his contemporary Adolph Busch, were among a small handful of great, insightful musicians of enormous integrity, who played the violin. Alas, Busch died relatively young and Szigeti's technique became compromised by arthritis beginning in the 1940's, even though he remained capable of great performances. The live Brahms Concerto with Mitropoulos and the NY Philharmonic from 1948 will take your breath away, and all the chamber music recordings he made with Casals in the 1950's, despite many awkward moments violinistically, are treasures.
