    A note to viewers: ☺️
    In this comment section, you will find a lot of info regarding points on this list, plus some extras. I worked on this video for over a month and left out a lot of details on purpose.
    A large goal with this video was for it to be approachable by new vegans or veg-curious people as veganuary is getting closer. I've had some incredible, informative comments. To the point where it would be information overload to the people who need it most - and I want the information to be digestible to those people.
    Please continue commenting any additional info you have! It could absolutely help someone or give them something to research. Like I said about my Red 40 mishap - this shit is confusing! I want it to be as simple as possible for people that need it.
    Thank you all so much for your comments! 💕

    Okay, @CorpseFreeKitchen, you got the bone char thing mostly wrong. It is NOT used to colour anything. It WAS the principal way to get the colour OUT of cane sugar, as the raw sugar would be tumbled in a large vat with the charred pieces of bone. For brown sugar, they would then add back in molasses. Meanwhile, beet sugar does not require this process, and has always been 100% Vegan. Over a decade ago, someone developed a synthetic tumbler base that is cheaper, and Vegan, and today, almost all U.S. producers use this artificial activated carbon. Notably, the famous brand Domino, last I checked, still uses bone char in their California production. It is usually difficult to find out if something is cane versus beet sugar, as some companies like advertising the cane version, but NO company advertises the sugar beet version, because so many people are genuinely stupid, and too many would assume it tastes like purple beets.
    That said, aside from you needing to correct the Red 40 thing (which you did), your content is solid. I was unaware of some of the variants of carmine. I was unaware of L-Cysteine. I have known for decades that candy corn was verboten, due to the gelatin alone. There are brands that don't have gelatin, but I have never looked for shelac, and have never seen a brand using honey. My preferred candy is chocolate, with nuts, any variety. When they come out with Vegan versions, like Reese's cups, they are never carried at Kroger or Wal-Mart, in spite of them having decent selections of other Vegan products. Often, their product runs will be testing sales, and if it doesn't sell, often because they stupidly hide Vegan products in meat sections, they discontinue them. Caroline's Fishless Tuna is an excellent example of that. In spite of Kroger having a Natural Foods section, in which a lot of specialty products are found, they refused to put this product there. They had it with the canned tuna, a place I never thought to look. I discovered it only when it was on the sale rack, and though I began to buy it like crazy, they stopped carrying it. I was told it was put where it was to entice curious meat eaters to try it. I replied, "So, instead of putting it where the people who want it can easily find it, you put it where the people who likely will never buy it will see it. That's stupid." It is still made, you just have to buy it online.

      About bone char, it's still used in the coloring process (which is what I said) lol so I don't really care about the specifics 😂 which is why I didn't research it beyond that. That's interesting though! Thanks for sharing that it's the Domino brand!
      I didn't know that about the fishless tuna! I shop at Kroger as well and never saw it for the same reasons you didn't. I have noticed recently that they have a lot of frozen unlabeled vegan items mixed in. I found some spring rolls that seemed to be vegan, and they were in the middle of the frozen appetizers with a lot of chicken and beef stuff. 🙄

    Hi friends! I forgot to mention the many sweetener alternatives to honey!
    Most people use maple syrup, but you can also use agave (which is what I do) or make your own date syrup.
    If you're wanting the honey flavor, there are several vegan honeys on the market! I haven't tried very many of them, but googling "vegan honey" or "bee free honey" brings up lots of options!

    1:09 Here's how I see it. I know some vegans are vegan by diet alone, but if someone is really an animal rights advocate, is getting vegan food from a slaughter house any better?
    What I would love the most is more full vegan fast food joints to come up, or even vegan fast food chains, so that we no longer have to support non-vegan companies. That way we'll never have to worry about the buns or patties or even the damned ketchup and mustard.
    Every part of the meat industry exists to support other, more lucrative industries. The meat is merely a by-product of those more lucrative industries.... Like beef is a by product of the leather industry.

    Hey, I've gotta start off with we're new to your channel and have been really enjoying your content so far. Especially the alcohol free challenge one because you taught us something useful we had never heard of, HALT. However we had to stop this video when we got to the honey section of this video because girl, you said it yoursef "to put it simply going vegan means you dont consume or purchase or condone or support the use of any animal products. When you buy products containing honey you are supporting the honey industry". There's only one part of that that I would change which is the end where you said the issue is supporting the industry. The issue is supporting the exploitation of animals, so there's never a right way to do the wrong thing. Every industry has their more ethical version of exploitation, so theres nothing about "ethical honey" that makes it right. There are so many alternatives, nobody needs honey except the bees who work their whole lives just to make a spoon of it.
    The isue is seeing other beings as things for us to use rather than viewing them as their own beings who deserve the right to their bodily autonomy, freedom and lives. Queen bees have their wings ripped off so that they dont leave the hive that humans want them in and the other bees wont leave if she stays there. It's messed up to hold other beings hostage like that and make them work for you and you know there's a word for that that we have a history of with humans too, and the word is slavery. I hope you understand and recant the part about ethical honey being a thing because even if you don't consume it yourself, you are growing your reach and condoning and even advocating for it for your viewers. If you would like to discuss further, I'm open to that as well ✌️💜🌱

      Hi, I appreciate your comment. I know what it means to be vegan and I discuss veganism in every video, so I didn't feel it necessary to delve into exactly what it means to be vegan, regarding exploitation. I mentioned that bees inevitably die from honey and never supported the use or purchasing of honey. I made this video with the knowledge that it would reach non-vegans and people who simply want to learn more about veganism. Especially with Veganuary rapidly approaching.
      My preferred version of advocacy is education and leading by example. It definitely isn't shaming anyone for their decisions, hence saying something along the lines of "IF you do it, at least don't support it commercially."
      In a nutshell, we agree. I don't consume honey, I don't buy it, nor did I mention "ethical honey." From my perception, the "industry" includes the purchasing or consumption of honey period.

    • @AnimaLiberationist
      @AnimaLiberationist 2 месяца назад

      @@CorpseFreeKitchen is it better in your opinion that people choose the less unethical option in all cases or just with bees' honey? When you say "if", people will hear "when" and think you are saying a less unethical way is still ok and then if more people switch to that option, it inevitably becomes unethical so they can keep up with demand.

    • @CorpseFreeKitchen
      @CorpseFreeKitchen  2 месяца назад +1

      I don't support any use of animal products period.
      Also - I say what I say, and I can't control what people WANT to hear. Respectfully, a clear example of that is your original comment. I never mentioned "ethical honey," and I never supported the use or consumption of honey. Your original comment ~called me out~ about saying I don't support the "industry" instead of the "exploitation of animals." It's the same thing.
      I can't live my life in a state of "if I say A, they hear B." I have too many videos to create (that actually help) to worry about what people *might* hear.

    Here's the thing about natural dyes. I do like natural dyes because they have a unique look to them but I don't care about the anti-artificial dyes some colors you can only get through really artificial dyes, there's also still hardly enough evidence of the harm. From what I could read, it's inconclusive.
    People treat a natural dyes as if they can't be harmful, but they actually can be because they can trigger people's allergies.
    From a commercial level I can see why they would choose artificial dye however, at home baking, I would probably prefer natural dye first.
    I do prefer natural fruit flavored gummies tho so I don't care if they look very brightly hued I go for the flavor.

    Interesting video... 🤔 My personal philosophy is to avoid these things if I can but I don't get too bogged down on it. One of my goals is to make veganism appear approachable and easy. So if a coworker made otherwise vegan cookies but used sugar with bone char, I wouldn't mind. I think the big picture is more important than the little detail. If we took issue with every single by product that makes ppl not want to go vegan. We need to shift the overton window for animal liberation. Just my opinion. 🤓

      I 100% agree with you! Realistically, the FDA gets away with so much sneaky shit that it's incredibly difficult to *actually* know what we are consuming. I look over ingredient lists as much as I can, but there's no telling how much I unintentionally consumed before I knew what a lot of this BS even was. Also going out to eat - I'm not going to pester my poor server to read the ingredient label on the bread to make sure it doesn't have L-Cysteine in it. For sure I tend to think about it as a boycott rather than from a framework of feeling like I've sinned if I put anything that even touched an animal byproduct in my mouth. The most important things are the big money makers. As long as I've cut my money going to them by > %99.9 then I'm less concerned about even consuming these fringe cases when I know I messed up. Some of them are gross though. But I'd probably have to throw a decent number of things away, a lot of money down the drain and that private act wouldn't make any difference on the profitability of these companies. I think there is also just not a reason why products with or without these are liked specifically for that ingredient; it isn't like I'm building up a taste for something that contains gelatin, for example. If I was less stringent about cheese on the other hand, I could easily swing back to consuming a significant amount.
