I had no idea you could tread water like this. I just started public (beginner) swimming lessons, and in our 4th session we were brought to the dive tank with life jackets on and shown how to tread water for about 10-15 minutes. After that we were instructed to take our jackets off, jump into the deep water and try to tread for 30 seconds. I was NOT ready, but did it anyway and promptly started to sink after I resurfaced (trying the egg beater). After watching this video, I was able to do the chair pose on my second try. I'm now able to tread for about 15 seconds doing a flutterkick, but knowing that I can relax back into the chair position if I get too tired has made me relax more in the water. Thank you so much for posting this!

I understand that there are techniques for competitive swimming strokes, but for real-world use, any technique that works for you should not only be okay, but encouraged! Treading water and floating are to keep you alive, not for someone to critique your form.
Yes! This is exactly how I managed to stay afloat. Just last month I tried going to deep parts of pool and whenever I sink, I try to go back to floating. So it finally dawned on me that going almost floating (with slightly diagonal than completely vertical) when leaning back really does the trick, even without moving the arms.
Hi Rins2793 - this is completely normal and nothing to worry about. Much of the time, if you lean slightly back, the water can actually help support your head [which can make the process somewhat easier]. --- What is one thing I can do to help, as your new "virtual" swim coach? I wholeheartedly agree! I`ve been swimming since I was 6, I`m good at it at the amateur level, I can theoretically do the eggbeater, however, I never understood why it is seen as the most efficient technique to tread water? It is such a waste of energy, you don`t need to twirl ur legs like that to stay afloat! Hell, I can even carry drinks in both my hands in the pool and dont need the eggbeater

There is no such thing as right and wrong as long as you are accomplishing the result! This is incredibly important > > remember, our goal of treading water is to keep our head above water so we can breath. Whatever technique helps us do that, is what we want to do! ---- Keep practicing and treading, Coach Jeff
Hey, I tried this technique today but I still couldn't tread water, I don't understand what might be the problem, I took a proper diaphragmatic breath and tried the chair drill while leaning back my upper body, and sculling together too, still I sank in the water. I can backfloat easily now but still can't tread water, especially in the deeper end, I get extremely anxious and short of breath in the deepwater but I can easily relax in shallow water which is why I tried this in shallow water only. Are there any other things I should consider? Any more exercises for relaxing better in the water?

@@caribeswim I’m struggling with freestyle swimming hope you can have a simpler and better tips on how to do it without running out of breath. Breathing is one struggle for me too. Thank you very much and more power to your channel 👍🙏
I totally hear you. The Foundation of swimming is relaxation and breath control. They ARE the deciding factors of how successful or less than successful we are with swimming any stroke, including Freestyle. This has to do with our ability to learn how to work WITH the water, instead of fighting against it. Relaxation & Breath control allows us to be more buoyant, relative to the water vs. if we: force movements, aren't relaxed, or do not have air in our lungs. The ladder makes us more dense. This is incredibly important as it changes how we approach swimming all together. Most programs want to push technique until they are blue in the face. The problem with this theory is that ALL THE TECHNIQUE in the world, cannot overcome lack of relaxation or no air in our lungs. ---- I say all this to say, focus on implementing meditation or at least Box Breathing [4 second diaphragm breath expanding stomach inhale, 4 second pull breath up to chest and hold at top, 4 second exhale, 4 second hold at bottom] repeating 5-10 times BEFORE you swim. Once we can relax more, we are more buoyant and therefore can focus more on simple techniques that make large impact. If you film a 30 second segment of you swimming and send to Jeff@caribeswim.com I am happy to provide a free analysis as well. Hope this helps! Until then, Keep Swimming, Coach Jeff
I remember just trying out letting myself actually just lean back, since my logic was if your letting yourself float upon your back, you float more easily, and low and behold just letting yourself tip back a bit actually helps massively

Any movement in the water is generated by us, unless there is a current. We want to use our hands to create a sculling motion to help propel us forward, not backwards. Hope this helps!
It is an advanced technique that is used by water polo players. I do think there are much simpler techniques to learn for beginners and mainly egg beater is a more advanced skill.

Great question - your entire foundation of treading water and indeed learning to swim is built on relaxation. The more you can relax and work WITH the water, the better you will be. Think of it like this: When we use forceful movements, we create tension in our muscles. More tension in our muscles makes us more dense. The more we relax, the less dense we become. --- Hope this helps! Let me know how I can help further! Coach Jeff Wood

Thank you for your comment - the truth is that we ALL have unique floating positions - they are not all "perfect" with our arms and legs on top of the water. When we look at relative density, muscle is more dense relative to water. Whereas adipose tissue is less dense relative to water. With that said, extremely muscular people can still float but we generally have to include much deeper breaths, relaxation, & sometimes movement. --- Hope this helps >> If I can offer any further feedback or support, let me know! Welcome to the channel and thank you for the comment! You want to do a 50/100 principle: 50% exhale [quick] and 100% inhale. This is my go to technique for treading water. I learned treading in a 5 ft deep pool, I’m 6 ft. So naturally I really couldn’t use my legs effectively. I feel really comfortable with this technique

I understand that there are techniques for competitive swimming strokes, but for real-world use, any technique that works for you should not only be okay, but encouraged! Treading water and floating are to keep you alive, not for someone to critique your form.
Completely agree and thank you for the comment! Learning to swim is about safety and enjoyment for the masses.

Great comment!
Coach Jeff
Yes! This is exactly how I managed to stay afloat. Just last month I tried going to deep parts of pool and whenever I sink, I try to go back to floating. So it finally dawned on me that going almost floating (with slightly diagonal than completely vertical) when leaning back really does the trick, even without moving the arms.
Great work! So glad this was helpful and you can tread water more efficiently!

Cannot wait to try this at the pool. This weekend when I get there.
Thank you for the comment and excited to hear how it goes this weekend. Report back!
Coach Jeff
I wholeheartedly agree! I`ve been swimming since I was 6, I`m good at it at the amateur level, I can theoretically do the eggbeater, however, I never understood why it is seen as the most efficient technique to tread water? It is such a waste of energy, you don`t need to twirl ur legs like that to stay afloat! Hell, I can even carry drinks in both my hands in the pool and dont need the eggbeater
hahaha that IS what treading water is meant to be done for!
Thank you for providing such a great useful video

Hi - thank you for your comment and welcome to the channel! That is a matter of preference and body type. I would say, give it a try, if it is easier for you to have your legs wider, than 100% start doing that.

Coach Jeff
This is just how I've always naturally treaded water when I seen the egg beater technique I was like OMG I'm doing it wrong!?!?!!
There is no such thing as right and wrong as long as you are accomplishing the result! This is incredibly important > > remember, our goal of treading water is to keep our head above water so we can breath. Whatever technique helps us do that, is what we want to do!
----
Keep practicing and treading,
Coach Jeff
Hey, I tried this technique today but I still couldn't tread water, I don't understand what might be the problem, I took a proper diaphragmatic breath and tried the chair drill while leaning back my upper body, and sculling together too, still I sank in the water. I can backfloat easily now but still can't tread water, especially in the deeper end, I get extremely anxious and short of breath in the deepwater but I can easily relax in shallow water which is why I tried this in shallow water only. Are there any other things I should consider? Any more exercises for relaxing better in the water?
Much of this has to do with fear of deep water and entering into a fight / flight state. I would love to offer more exclusive support inside of our free community here: www.skool.com/caribeswim/about

You are Partially Right Sir for the beginners but what will you do when you hands are Engaged?

----
I say all this to say, focus on implementing meditation or at least Box Breathing [4 second diaphragm breath expanding stomach inhale, 4 second pull breath up to chest and hold at top, 4 second exhale, 4 second hold at bottom] repeating 5-10 times BEFORE you swim.
Once we can relax more, we are more buoyant and therefore can focus more on simple techniques that make large impact.
If you film a 30 second segment of you swimming and send to Jeff@caribeswim.com I am happy to provide a free analysis as well.
Hope this helps! Until then, Keep Swimming,
Coach Jeff
I remember just trying out letting myself actually just lean back, since my logic was if your letting yourself float upon your back, you float more easily, and low and behold just letting yourself tip back a bit actually helps massively
I am so glad to hear that this was helpful! Keep going!

Thank you for your comment,

But if you wanna tread water for a workout then you would wanna do more motion right?

does that hand gesture technique play important role??
Thank you for your comment! Yes, sculling is important as it creates a downward force that helps to keep the body up.
Let me know how else I can help!
Coach Jeff
How do you avoid water pushing you completely backwards when you lean slightly back
Any movement in the water is generated by us, unless there is a current. We want to use our hands to create a sculling motion to help propel us forward, not backwards.
Hope this helps!
egg beater is for water polo, getting way out of the water?
It is an advanced technique that is used by water polo players. I do think there are much simpler techniques to learn for beginners and mainly egg beater is a more advanced skill.

@@caribeswim thank you jeff ❤️
Do you have to move your hands really hard or do you do it calmly
Great question - your entire foundation of treading water and indeed learning to swim is built on relaxation. The more you can relax and work WITH the water, the better you will be. Think of it like this: When we use forceful movements, we create tension in our muscles. More tension in our muscles makes us more dense. The more we relax, the less dense we become.

I tried this method, I think holding your breath will just be really hard, u can hold big but exhale a little bit then inhale, my dads military coach taught me “feel good while not feeling good”
Thank you for your comment. It is possible that it is slightly harder for some, but the extra air in your lungs [creating buoyancy in the water] FAR outweighs that. Try treading or this position while exhaling your air... you will sink.

I just learned to swim and was taught a similar approach to the egg beater, but tbh wasn't really given a specific technique. So im able to do SOMETHING that keeps my head above water for about ten seconds. And it is quite tiring Lol. Keep Treading,

I’m male, 5’10 and 56kg. Float like have rocks in my pockets. My friend who is female, 5’7 and 56kg, floats like styrofoam. I do a lot of running and sports, while she is the least active healthy person I know. I never realised the impact bodyfat content had on buoyancy
---
Hope this helps >> If I can offer any further feedback or support, let me know!
Thank you for the comment,
Coach Jeff Wood
How do we breathe while keeping lung full?? Do you not start sinking when you breathe out?
Welcome to the channel and thank you for the comment! You want to do a 50/100 principle: 50% exhale [quick] and 100% inhale. The answer is yes, you will always reduce your buoyancy when exhaling BUT you need to exhale in order to properly inhale. Timing your exhale and making it quick with reduce the amount of time you are reducing your buoyancy before recovering with your inhale.
Hope this helps!

Thank you for your comment! You want to take a full inhale and exhale about 30 - 50%. The exhale should be quick as you will feel your bodies buoyancy reduce slightly when you do it. From there, get another big diaphragmatic inhale and repeat.

sir, you are beating (sculling) your hands, mind explaining your hand employment here?
Thank you for your comment - yes, your hands gently turn out and then back in in a sculling motion. For a complete detail, watch this video: ruclips.net/video/bPd6BOhGQzc/видео.html
