If anyone else runs into issues with the display going black and appearing as a thin 'band' once the SciTech drivers are installed (it'll likely hang on the 'Windows is Restarting...' prompt beforehand), boot it into Safe Mode and reapply the 640x480 and 16 colours resolution and reboot - this should get you back into Windows proper. Then shutdown Windows, go into the VM settings within VMBox and give the computer some more graphics memory (I gave mine 128MB). On the subsequent reboot the machine started fine with the display driver enabled and working. Then set your colour / screen resolution and all should be fine from there.

Ive just also found temporary solution to cursor bug. I reduced Video memory in Guest Settings to size 7mb and it seems that cursor is visible now although it blinks and still not seen for several seconds period
I enjoy to play point-and-click games from late 90s, this is precicely Windows 98 era. Almost all of them are without 3dfx acceleration. So I think these games must be run without any problems on your VirtualBox+Windows 98

IF you do have to do that, I'm pretty sure there are ways to back up just the virtual machine image files that are created (copy) and then you can just delete the old ones and recopy the backups and re-add to virtual box. I'm sure that is very vague as it is but essentially just look up how to back up a virtual box machine and I'm sure you'll find plenty of helpful tutorials.

Does not work on an AMD FX processor. Even after using an NDIS fix and disabling nesting paging, it still gives me a Windows protection error. EDIT: I disabled VTx/AMD-V in the VM and it boots, but slowly.

"* *Detail>>* *EXPLORER caused an exception 6d007eH in module* *EXPLORER.EXE at 0167:0040a067.* _etc, etc._ Then once i close out of that it, sits at the cyan background. When i restart it does that same thing. Can anyone help?

This is a very late reply, but for most point-and-click games you could emulate them with much more ease through ScummVM :)

Could be your computer BIOS setting. That was my problem. Had to enable "virtual apps" in BIOS, then all was good.

I had virtual box running smoothly for my son (who is special needs autism) and he somehow made the file "Inaccessible". I can see in the virtual box file on my system where the error was made, but I can't seem to get it to revert back to the working format. Would you be able to assist with that? I just found your video; I would hate to start all over reinstalling everything.
IF you do have to do that, I'm pretty sure there are ways to back up just the virtual machine image files that are created (copy) and then you can just delete the old ones and recopy the backups and re-add to virtual box. I'm sure that is very vague as it is but essentially just look up how to back up a virtual box machine and I'm sure you'll find plenty of helpful tutorials.
Why don't you just make a virtualbox image and share it with us? Then we won't have to go through all this.

The sdd-win.iso file is an exe not an ISO when I downloaded it; managed to find an ISO but the restart after choosing properties display colours is now stuck on windows is restarting and will not restart.

Excuse me for bothering you, but how does this RAIN thing work? I mean I just Installed it in Windows 98 (with ACPI) and after installation it is stored in C:/Rain. I cant open exe file. Or is this program working automatically after installment? And I dont need to do anything more
The installer should have created a shortcut in the guest machine's start menu. Just click on start in Win98SE, go to programs, click rain, then click the application. A new icon will appear in the lower right corner of the Win98 task bar. click it to confirm that Rain is working. The rain readme states you should never run rain directly from the C drive.

After a bit of searching it's an easy fix turn off your acceleration/virtualization and your good

I think I generally got it fine. I skipped the internet connection part since I don't really have any interest on there. I'm just trying to boot up some of my old CD-rom games that I want to relive for nostalgic purposes. Still trying to figure that part out. But great tutorial! It was easy to follow for the most part, even with winworldpc being down.

Could you make a tutorial on getting the Realtek AC97 driver off the Windows 95 disk for sound in old games.
Yes, it's coming in the next few days. I have just uploaded a new version of this video but stop just short of this step. Part 2 will cover this in detail. Basically MIDI sound is only supported with AC97 so is necessary if you want sound in many games. I am sure you knew this already though.

Does not work on an AMD FX processor. Even after using an NDIS fix and disabling nesting paging, it still gives me a Windows protection error.
EDIT: I disabled VTx/AMD-V in the VM and it boots, but slowly.
I have only ever had Intel chips so not experienced this. Maybe installing RAIN would help?

yeah your download is of a exe not an iso and making it into an iso doesn't work seems its a corrupted download, cause after selecting the SciTech Nucleus Driver bluescreens pop up and restarts into a bluescreen, safe mode i can't change anything seems like a BAD DOWNLOAD LINK!

I can't believe VirtualBox still doesn't have a proper SVGA driver that is compatible with Windows 98. VMware already has it, by still doesn't have a proper SVGA driver for Windows 95 RTM.

There is no link to sdd-win.iso just a link to a exe file which is NOT a iso file and you can't attach a exe file as a iso file.

It all worked for me, up until it robooted after setup and brought me to the this screen 19:10.
I got an error message saying *"The SHELL32.DLL file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL:tFileAttributesA."*
I had to click it out a couple times before it went away, then once i cancelled out of the networking window it gave me an error window telling me;
*"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. "*

Then once i close out of that it, sits at the cyan background.
