  • Is it possible to install Windows 98 on 98 megabytes of hard drive space? It is, thanks to 98lite! Originally released in the late '90s, it allows you to minimize your Windows installation by getting rid of components that Microsoft doesn't let you remove.

If I recall correctly, an early version of 98lite was used as evidence during the Microsoft antitrust case to prove that Windows 98 could indeed run without Internet Explorer, despite Microsoft claiming that it was impossible.

Conceptually 98lite (and especially 98micro) was wonderful at least in theory. In practice, I found it to be a bit glitchy, so I stayed on Windows 95 and NT4 longer than most people at the time. This way, I could be truly free of any of IE's modifications to the shell.

I love that the final size was 98.1mb, that's awesome. Could possibly fit Win98 on a 100mb zip disk if you could trim a bit more, or did they tell the truth about the size of zip disks back then unlike with hard drive sizes? For that matter, could you boot from a zip disk? That would be extra awesome. A real recovery boot disk for older Windows computers.

This video is interesting to watch, it’s nice to see the $5 Windows 98 PC back!
Also, on the subject of 98lite, I’ve also heard that this tool is also really useful for older Pentium PCs without MMX and prior, according to a video that The Nostalgia Mall posted in relation to this piece of utility (I even watched that video as well, really great video). The replacement of the Windows Desktop Update explorer with 95’s one can speed up the operating system on pre-MMX systems to an extent.
Aside from that, this tool also helps those that have less disk space available or had a low-capacity hard drive for use with Windows 98. Pretty interesting stuff!

Tbf it's not the browser itself, but something called "Edge Runtime/WebView2", a stripped down version of Edge which is something like Electron. In the leaked version of Windows 11, you could also access the Edge keyboard navigation panel by pressing F7.

    • @nickwallette6201
      @nickwallette6201 Год назад

I never knew for sure if they really meant Internet Explorer, or just its rendering engine, MSHTML. The HTML runtime _was_ embedded deeply into Windows. The shell used it for the folder view windows, Outlook Express needed it for displaying emails, Active Desktop, and so on. They used it as a dynamic content viewer anywhere they could, and having that functionality as part of the base OS made it possible for other applications to safely assume it was available as well.
The "browser" was really just a front-end to that doc viewer, with some navigation controls and the like, so it didn't make any sense at all to uninstall Internet Explorer, when you were pretty much just deleting an icon at that point. (OK, a little more than that, but not much.)

Hi Michael. I actually installed the famous Win98 lite on Wii rebranded as Windows 98 and actually seeing that, the system seemed just like a broken Windows98 with access only to Safe mode. I say that because I actually also managed to install Windows 95 on Wii and everything worked just fine. You can use mouse pointer fine lowering pointer sensitivity, I could play Solitaire better than expected. You actually can use improve graphics performance and quality by choosing the proper graphics on Windows video properties in control panel, just choose Trio video driver you're able to set color quality to 256 colors on 640x480. Any greater color and resolution will work also but you ca't play on Wii, only on PC. You can actually see any screensavers on 256 colors but Pipes and Labirinth3D won't show on Wii, only on 16 colors.
I could make an entire drawing on Paint on Wii, it's just good, as any Windows application. To make MS DOS not to crash 16 color set is necessary, it works fine in window or full screen mode. DOS text capture is pretty much delayed and you have to type letters individually and press enter on Wii virtual keyboard.
DOS Box can handle Windows 95 using between 32 and 34Mb.

Funny this comment is only 10 days old. Ive been currently messing around with the same set up. I also had trouble booting up 98lite regularly and only in safe mode. Idk exactly what i did to eventually getting it to boot normally. Seems hit or miss. But i started messing around with boot settings
When booting up and if it gives you boot options. (Option 4.) Step by step confirmation. Its trial and error. But as long as you boot with all drivers. It won't be safe mode. Something with low memory or the graphics driver that makes it blue screen normally. " Stated in one of his Michaels videos the dos box ctrl f12 key bind accelerates the emulation." Though i can't tell if it works for me or its disabled. I do try this when booting up and it seems to help boot normally.
It seems like win98 lite for the wii is just a novelty without the ability to do anything. Usb drivers are loading but i am unable to mount and storage media device. And the cd rom drive is unable to load any CDs. No matter what i have done.

I remember trying to get my Wii to use Windows 3.1 when I was using Tantric's port of DosBox, to see if I could have a shot of running Space Cadet on it long before the reverse engineered version got a port to the Wii. I had no success with Win 3, but the console is surprisingly competent with playing DOS games. A USB keyboard is a must, plus I recommend changing the core in the dosbox.conf to simple. I liked playing Wasteland on my Wii, plus Epic Pinball.

It's kind of funny watching this video.
Back when I was running a Win98 P1 233MMX system, I bought a copy of 98Lite Professional version 4.5, solely to tame IE4 as Windows shell in Win98.
A month or so ago, wanting to play some Windows games that do not play nice with Win10, I had to use DOSBox X to create an emulated Win98 environment. I still have all my Windows 95, 98, and 98Lite files, extracted from their CDs, used to create my original 98Lite install of Windows, and I remembered how to install Windows DOS and then Windows itself, for a clean Win98 with 98Lite system. Wanting to update to the most recent version of 98Lite, my old license key wasn't valid on the site to obtain a copy of version 4.7. Emailing the company got my license updated, and enabled me to obtain the current version.
On my old P1 233MMX, and in the emulated install, I'd do a clean install using the SLEEK option, rather than 98MICRO.
Like a Windows install CD itself, 98Lite isn't something you'd use all the time. On a stable system you'd use it once, and that's all. For making a light weight, speedy, useable Win98 environment, though, it was a must have. And it still is.

This was awesome in the 90s. You could even change the explorer to look like win3.11. You had all the drivers and the "stability" of 98 with the look and feel of 95. Back then it was cool to take windows customisation as far as you could. I remember having a custom start screen and a custom taskbar with all kinds of nerdy widgets. Mozilla, Winamp, ICQ an mIRC were also a must back then.

There is similar software for Windows XP that is called nLite. I used this tool to build a custom XP install CD that had all updates injected as well as a bunch of stuff removed that was served from a Linux based PXE server.

That's interesting to see an operating system only take 98MB of space. Can you make a slipstreamed version of Windows which takes up around half the storage space?

This was great back in the day. Not just for stripping down win98 on hardware, but running Win98 is emulators of the day before real virtualisation came in.

how much it is reduced in capability is the next question. can you install games? some for sure relied on system services to be available.
i remember xplite had this same problem that it was amazingly small but at the cost of limited capability to install or run various applications.
so it was good on the surface, but ended up more like a roadblock in the day to day usage.
i still have the xplite install :)

Now see what sorts of programs you can install on it. Maybe Netscape and such. Start small and go big as it fails to load system components. So you just add them in and see how far you can get and how big the installation ends up like.

Some ancient industrial systems likely still need win 98 to function. So this tool could still be bought occasionally by places that need to make an embedded version of win 98.

Can you break it now???? The reason I never tried this back in the day is so many things started/ended up relying on the fact that IE was already there... Things like norton, and the HTML help stuff. I think quickbooks too... Can you just start installing things on the machine and share the experience of trying to use things that expect an HTML engine but there is none.... (uhhhh.... I don't know how you can tell what requires IE... I think quickbooks only recently removed the IE component so that's a good place to start, a 2001 version of quickbooks).

Hi, this sound good for say a thin client that has legacy ports and ethernet or usb 2 - there is a patch for win98 to get better speeds out of usb rather than the original version 1 device
This makes it a good conversion machine to connect Pc to 486 to more modern pc's
Personally i have a older toshiba satelite laptop and a wyse thin client that both are dual boot win 6.22 and xp dual boot
I can use dos and laplink file to the dos c-drive or the 2bg dos partition ( it cannot see XP ) , then reboot into XP and i can pick up the files of the dos partition and use ether net to spread around other XP / win 7 / 10 / linux
Note there is some trap with win 98 . it can see the modern shares but cannot connect, i managed to get one step close by using win98 login screen and samba1 or something, i had to downgrade a win 10 samba security us force version 1 i dont recall - but i can use a win 10 machine and drop files on a win 95/98 share and it works fine it is just the other way is troublesome - but it did ork with the 2015-2016 releases of win 10
