Definitely replace the HDD with an SSD. I believe there’s also a workaround to get Windows 8.1 running on SSE1 processors, so that might make for an interesting video.
If you put the ssd on the 98 box don’t forget to turn off the paging file or move it to a partition on a spinny disk or you’ll kill the ssd really quick. Also 98/XP and I think Vista does not include trim support
I would definitely recommend going with an SSD rather than a CF or SD card in this case. NTFS (or any journaling file system) will eat through SD and CF cards rather quickly. Also there's the page file that would need to be taken into account. Awesome video and I'd definitely be interested in both a video on Kolibri and XP x64 and XP IA-64. :)
You should get an IDE to SD adapter since SD cards are quite more common and are quite inexpensive than compact flash cards. Not only that, most modern SD cards have decent speeds that it would max out the old ancient IDE ATA interface and as said cheaper to get than buying an SSD and trying to use an IDE to SATA adapter.

Thank God you finally upgraded the gpu!!! If you ever wondered why the integrated gpu caused so many problems such as low res, low colour depth images or things not displaying properly, that's because the VESA compatibility in the integrated gpu is crap!!! To put it simply, VESA compatibility allows an OS to run at resolutions higher than VGA res without graphics drivers installed. By the year 2000 most GPUs where compatible with VESA 3.0. With VESA 3 this is how you are able to see the typical Windows 7 boot screen, the "Windows is loading files.." text in higher 1024x768 res instead of 80x25 text mode and also when you boot into Windows XP or newer with no Graphics Drivers, you can run in 800x600 and higher in 16 or 32bit colour depth. Intel's graphics however where stuck on VESA 2.0 until the GMA 950 which only allows 640x480 in 4bit (16 colours) colour depth without dedicated graphics drivers. If it was up to me I would have changed the GPU on day 1 of having that PC for better compatability!! By the way your channel is awesome!!!!

Hey Michael! I would recommend that you install the monitor's driver, because this is a 75hz model right? The driver includes the driver .inf file and a color profile. Maybe this would be helpful and maybe it looks nicer on camera then ( i don't know much about video recording, but i think it's helpful. (I use a similar monitor for my Vista PC project, so i know that there is a driver for that)
75 Hz might seem better, but I don't think it is. I would keep the monitor at 60 Hz, because it will look just as fine while being less cpu and gpu heavy. Also - I think - videos in 30 or 60 Hz might look better if your monitor is actually 60 Hz instead of 75 Hz
Yes, definitely an SSD in the 98 PC is something we want to see, even if obviously won't run at its full speed by any means. The flash card solution is only OK for older OS like Win 9x, newer ones make a lot more read/write operations, severely reducing the lifespan of the card. Very satisfying to see Aero running on a PC which doesn't even have a proper (typically AGP at its time, later PCIe) graphics expansion slot on it, I wasn't really sure whether any PCI cards existed that were good enough for that.
Maybe it’s broken or something, but why did you bother switching the front plates when you could have just have just installed the beige dvd drive into the computer?
I was able to get Xubuntu 18.04 working on my Athlon XP machine, I was impressed it could run something that new.(although Firefox kept crashing on it)
Good to know they already had Norton popups in 1998 And yeah, of course we want to see the Windows XP 64-bit/x64 and KolibriOS videos. Btw you should do a ReactOS video.
I once installed an ATI RAGE VR card in my own Gateway with Win98. Turns out the ATI integrated graphics on the motherboard were better than the card, so the card returned to my generic WinMe PC to supplant the poor Intel graphics.
21:58 Windows Aero = Windows error if you have captions enabled. ;-) As for having a component in a case that doesn’t match the color (your DVD drive initially), heck, I put a 5¼" floppy drive into my Pentium 3 back in the day, not caring that it was way out of place (and color) for its era. The original intent was that I had hoped for a way to make diskette images for my 8-bit computers like Commodore 64 and Atari 800, but ended up abandoning the idea when I couldn’t find any info online 2 decades ago to do so.
I wish you would show MORE of the issues you come across. I’m a huge fan of Druaga1, and your videos you do that are more loose and less scripted I really enjoy. I just picked up a $10 Windows 98 PC today at Goodwill. An HP Pavilion 6640C K6-2 500, 20GB HD, 64MB RAM (max is 768). It has an ASUS P5S-VM board with a SIS-530 chipset, but most importantly, it has an ISA slot so I can use the Goodwill SB AWE-64 card I got for a dollar a year or so ago.
Are you planning on doing dual or even triple boot with XP on this PC? Could be a good use for that SSD. Too bad neither of those OS-s use TRIM, but it's a throwaway SSD so it's no big deal. Upgrading RAM to 1GB could be pretty sweet too.
At least someone installed a new gpu this year.

The beige one is...somewhat broken
I always think of dankpods now when I hear the jazz song at the beginning.
"Four years in the making, or five- FIVE years, gosh! It's been five years since 2016"
this, *this* phrase right there - it hits hard holy cow.
I was able to get Xubuntu 18.04 working on my Athlon XP machine, I was impressed it could run something that new.(although Firefox kept crashing on it)
i think firefox wants sse2 and the athlon xp doesnt have it
@@jedsiecz it’s possible. Don’t remember the version of it, but it could be that.
"FX 5200"
oh no
Can't wait to see it in action, though!
I'm pretty sure this is the first time something has actually worked out. Looking forward to the SSD installation!
This $5 PC has been a hilariously effective investment
The $5 98 PC can run Aero with a working GPU, yet "Vista Ready" computers couldn't even run the OS to begin with.
Great Video Michael keep it up
An pc who passed for every test possible, every upgrade, every software , and now, a gpu for the evolution
Good to know they already had Norton popups in 1998
And yeah, of course we want to see the Windows XP 64-bit/x64 and KolibriOS videos. Btw you should do a ReactOS video.
Samsung 970 EVO is a nvme drive. You cannot plug it into a sata expansion card. You have to buy 860 evo to have a data interface.
14:24 Why did you remove the cover when both of them were dvd rom?
What resolution is the PC at now? 1280x960?
I once installed an ATI RAGE VR card in my own Gateway with Win98. Turns out the ATI integrated graphics on the motherboard were better than the card, so the card returned to my generic WinMe PC to supplant the poor Intel graphics.
21:58 Windows Aero = Windows error if you have captions enabled. ;-)
As for having a component in a case that doesn’t match the color (your DVD drive initially), heck, I put a 5¼" floppy drive into my Pentium 3 back in the day, not caring that it was way out of place (and color) for its era. The original intent was that I had hoped for a way to make diskette images for my 8-bit computers like Commodore 64 and Atari 800, but ended up abandoning the idea when I couldn’t find any info online 2 decades ago to do so.
Very Kool video. I love the older machines and just bought a retro dell 4000 to run rocket jockey on win 95 or 98.
I love finding old discs in drives I haven’t used in years lol. Trip down memory lane
gl i tried installing updates on windows vista on my old c2d pc and it just lags to death now chocking all 2 gigs of ram on it
Amazing video as always :)
Thank you!
I wish you would show MORE of the issues you come across. I’m a huge fan of Druaga1, and your videos you do that are more loose and less scripted I really enjoy. You’re actually really funny but many videos are super professional and more dry. Still interesting, but I try to find these videos where stuff goes wrong! Those are the most fun to watch lol 😂
So please, love your channel Michael - Please show the issues and failures and the like. This video, and the special clapper video where you destroyed the knockoff version then duct taped it I was dying laughing 😂
👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
Do this with Windows 7 and install Vista driver (theoretically it's compatible)
Wow, didn't think it was possibly to get Areo working on a P3! That's awesome!
The Windows XP x64 future vid sounds good! Great video by the way
Michael please install the most beautiful and stabled Microsoft OS ever released, to enjoy it with the GPU and drivers installed. I'm talking about Windows 2000 of course!
I was waiting for this
same
I feel like a motherboard upgrade is just an entirely new PC at this point.
7:21 what Circuit board is that?
I would love a video about the 64-bit Edition and Professional x64 Edition. I really wanna know more about development and also naming reasons.
20:55 By the time you upgrade the motherboard though you’re really starting to get into Ship of Theseus territory
Weird how Vista required VRAM, yet my PC from 2008, didn’t need that XP
It ran Windows Aero fairly well, and has integrated graphics
