I was recently contacted by a NAS company known as ASUSTOR. And they offered to send me one of their network attached storage devices to use with the Windows 98 PC. Seagate jumped in as well and sent over 48TB worth of IronWolf hard drives. This should be fun! Huge thanks to both companies for generously sending all of this to me!

The LCD on the NAS is really nice for status at a glance. I use TrueNAS (Formally FreeNAS) and that is a really nice feature to just glance at it and see if its happy. But yeah, it definitely had that late 90-00’s mini stereo vibe to it with the inverted blue lcd.

Btw, better way of sorting files and folders is to use "00_name", "01_name" etc up till like "10_name"
(also with the underscore). That way it's being sorted well no matter what system you're using.
Hey Michael MJD!! Keep up the good videos! Always love seeing a new video notifications from you!
I didn’t know that Win98 could even recognize up to ~2TB, now I’m wishing I held on to my old machines to push them further!
The old Bios based method of booting a computer couldn't boot a partition larger than 2TB. The newer UEFI booting protocol can boot much bigger drives.
@@hanro50 So could the OS do it now if it was patched or something?
@@darkm007
It's not an OS limitation. Infact if you could boot a set OS using a UEFI bootloader. Then yes, you could give it's main drive a size that's bigger than 2 TB.
It's more a software limitation with the Bios of your motherboard. One that's thankfully since been fixed with the move to UEFI based bioses.

12:39 Try changing the names to "01", "02", etc. through "10".
I just tested this in my Windows 95 VM and can confirm this does work
12:28 - For it to show in order on Windows 98, you would have to rename 1, 2, 3, etc to 01, 02, 03, etc (yes, with a 0 at the front, then it will be in order). Every number must be two digits like 11, 12, and 13 are two digits. Windows 98 expects every file name starting with numbers to have the same numbers of digits equally for it to be sorted in order.
Hi Michael MJD! Love your videos! Keep up the good work because i love this type of videos. :)
I want to see a video about the windows 98 service pack you showed in the video
I love your chill music and video style
You deserve success for working so hard on This Channel
A couple hard drives and a Nas is a start to running and reviewing products and is great content.
I actually would LOVE seeing the easiest way to set this up for both newer and older computers. I rehab a lot of retro PC and Mac machines and would love to have something that is easier for older versions of both Windows and Mac OS to connect to. I suck at networking and would love to have a streamlined solution. Will be keeping an eye out for more videos on this!
Love your videos, dude! Keep up the neat work.

I didn’t know about the unofficial sp3 for windows 98! It really caught my eye so I’d love to see a video on that, since I have a nostalgic 98 rig set up! So, I’d love to see a showcase of what it does!
Very glad you are gaining some well deserved traction. Very fun video and a natural sponsorship!

Love your channel and have taken many inspirations from your videos on my channel. Excited to watch this channel grow. Keep up the superior work! 👏🤘
Happy to hear that some people still do good things.
Yknow, i get its 23 years old now, but it still hurts when people say win98 is vintage.
Congrats on the hardware backing from reputable businesses, MJD! My suggestion for a future video would be a refresh on how to set-up & run various OS platforms from a NAS-based VM. [Bonus points for "obscure cross-platformity", like Linux from Android.] I'm kind of pieceing together research tips from multiple other channels I follow; Would love to hear what you have to say, next. Cheers, man.
When the NAS is more powerful than your "gaming" tower
12:31 if you rename your windows folders to 01 02 03 instead of 1 2 3, Windows 98 and other OS's will sort it correctly.
Nice video btw! I'm thinking of getting an Asustor now, love the interface and ease of use you showed in this video.
Nice to see you're uploading videos in 4K MJD! With you now shooting in 4K, you'll be able to come up with 2TB worth of data in no time!
You have a very soothing voice, Michael!

When using artwork for the old Windows flag make sure it’s the Windows 95 Wingdings font version because sizes of the red and blue squares at the tail of the flag different. Only the Windows 3.1 boot screen flag has tail squares the same size which looks weird when rotated sideways.
please make a video about the history of windows 2000 development
Congratulations for that upgrade. iam happy for 4 you.
It would be interesting to setup a lot of vm's and make them "self hosted cloud computer's" although you would probably have to upgrade the ram
Good video. Also glad to see the $5 98 PC back. Regarding the 1.96tb limit, it somehow also registers that there's nothing on the drive itself, so my theory is that you can put as much storage on in (more than 1.96tb) and still have it read and copy files from a Windows 98 PC utill the real limit is reached. (also, the 1.96tb counter would start to decrease when there is really 1.96tb left, and would start to track how much of that 1.96tb has been taken).
Exactly. The only time you might run into an issue is if you try to copy over 2TB in one operation, then a disk space check could fail. But IIRC Win98 doesn't do a preliminary space check, it just copies as much as it can and only gives an error when writes start to fail.
Seeing more about that Service Pack 3 sounds great
I have found that it's best to name files that start in order to 01, 02, etc. so they fall right in line other 2 digit numbers. Or 001, 002 for 3 digit numbers, etc. Works out a treat fot making it easier to organize and find them.
AWESOME VIDEO, Michael!
Here’s a tutorial to fill 2tb use the terminal and type cat /dev/random > yourfilehere that’s how you do it
Good 'ol Win 98 file sorting. I believe you can get around that with using a double digit naming scheme, 01, 02.. and such. Then your 10 will fall in line.
RAID5 is 4 disks with striping at block level and distributed parity (fault tolerance 1 disk). so the logical volume will extend to up to three time the smallest drive. I actually expected to see SMB1 as default protocol for Windows 98, but nonetheless, this seems to be working well.
12:30 and that's why I use 01, 02, etc till 10, 11, etc (and not 1, 2, etc) --> nice vid, first time I watched you. Got ASUSTOR as well so I sub'd lol. Greetings from Belgium
Wow! Amazing video!
That's pretty cool!
If the machine runs Linux, can it run third-party apps on the terminal? There is an Apple protocol called AFP, launched between 1988 and 1990, this protocol still exists today, it was removed in Big Sur (I think it now uses only SMB). And there is software for Linux used to create these AFP servers called Netatalk. I use it with a Raspberry Pi on a 1995 Mac (but it could be a 1988 Mac), on the same network as Windows 10. That would be an even more incredible way to expand the possibilities of connections. Thanks for the great content.
We support AFP already. We don't have any intentions of removing it.
this channel is too underrated its sad. oh and im subbing rn.
Your videos never fail to impress me.
FYI: the required update provides the NTLMv2 protocol support for Windows 98.
SAMBA can be configured in native Windows 9x mode, but it seems not implemented in the GUI.
I came here for the fun idea, staed and liked after you mentioned the Win 98 SP3. If you have a video explaining it would be great
Love your vids!
Gezz that's the fastest i ever clicked on a Michael MJD video and 4 12TB Ironwolf Drives From Segate now that's just extreme right there but would love to see what would happen if one of those 12TB Ironwolf drives on windows 98 had the max 2 TB on it would love to see how Windows 98 would handle it
I set up a NAS a few days ago but with 8 TB of Space, the drives were from Seagate too.
Definitely do the virtual machines on the NAS!! That would be interesting to me.
Bro put leading zeros in front of your numbers! I still do that as an artific of using old systems to get them to display in order 😅
I fought so much with getting 98, 95, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, etc. to read from network shares (particularly on a Debian VM that I set up), and I realized that instead of enabling anonymous access, I probably could have run smbpasswd and created user accounts to match my username. I'll have to try that next time I set everything up.
The other day, I actually found on the side of the road, a few laptops being thrown out. One that I fixed up is an HP Pavilion g7, seems to be from 2011. However, the oldest out of them all and also what seems to be in the best physical condition is actually an IBM Thinkpad G40 laptop with a Pentium 4 cpu. I looked up the model and this IBM laptop seems to be from January of 2004. I don't have the AC adapter which I have one on the way, but shortly, I should be able to test it and soon I'll do a video about it. Maybe this IBM laptop that I found may be old enough to support Windows 98.
I ran into the same issue as you with mounting the network drive. In my case, I found that I could use the Map Network Drive feature that you can access by right clicking My Computer and that would bypass the password requirements, curiously.
The absurdity of this video earned you my subscribe. 👌
3:21 Our man is lowkey slowly turning into Linus
The fact that the hardware was send to Michael to try was kind of a spoiler the experiment would work, otherwise the video would have been either delayed in order to try alternative methods, or cancelled altogether, but it's truly awesome it can be done anyway.
Funny thing is. He never asked for guidance. I thought I was gonna be guiding him. We made the product too easy. Kidding.
I actually had a network set up such that my Packard-Bell (running Windows 98) could see an 8TB external hard drive attached to my main computer and access it as if it were a normal network drive. There was basically no problem there.
Hey Michael MJD! Keep up the good work! Please do and try NCSA Mosaic on Chrome OS, with fixing, so i can try it on my computer!

I would like to see more on this. It's all new to me not having one.
finally got to this video since i was watching a livestream of It Takes Two
Yes, I'd love to see this NAS doing stuff besides just serving files. Sounds like it could be used as a desktop, in a pinch.
Really cool video and really cool hardware.
Cool for Asustor and Seagate to have sent this
Thanks!
This is the second RUclipsr I've seen to get the same bundled drives and NAS. Jeff Geerling got them last week.
Lmao. This was months of preparation. We've sent out to a few people lately.
You can download disk test software (or some kind of linux dd equivalent) to write 2tb of random data (or more) while also testing write and read speeds. Be sure to allocate time to it, it will probably take days (except if your ethernet is fast and the nas drives are fast enough
there is a patch we used time ago in linux to map the net drives in our company, you have to edit the .smb file and put "@" on the top of the users names, that usually fix the problem with mapping net drives, youcan also use the netuse protocol on cmd, excuse me for my english..
Congrats on the sponsorship!
Yeah, if I didn't have retired enterprise servers I would consider buying one of those NASes. You should add the m.2 drives if you plan on using it for anything past just storage for speed BTW.
I may end up buying some of those drives, about to move to a new server.
For internal network things, I have SMB1 enabled too for retro things.
My prebuilt needed too much storage, thanks for the idea.
14:35 That was my first thought once you brought that up ... Guess we gotta find out now. Hope your now going to start the Linux OS on the nas downloading your channel to fill it past the 1.96TB mark and then copy something from the 98PC to see if it allows you to.
this is very kool. thanks for the video.
you can map any shared storage with a script defining user name and password for nas logion , not matching windows user , this is standard for some time now for any network sharing . in if using older nas on win 10 not supporting sm2 you can add thru windows update under option installed updates
Well I needed a new nas and this showed me all the features I have been looking for, made them a sale!
Thanks! Your support is appreciated!
I'd definitely like to see how it can run Virtualbox. If I could run multiple operating systems on the same machine and use the NAS to backup snapshots of these VMs I wouldn't have to go through the currently rather cumbersome backup procedure I have. I suppose I'd still have to backup individual PCs, but if I didn't use them as much as I do now I wouldn't have to spend so much time maintaining them.
What is better than a new mjd video
Just to let you know, you can create dummy files of arbitrary sizes in windows simply by using the command "fsutil file createnew (filename) (length in bytes)"
I've used this a couple times for cloud storage services that give free extra storage if you store so much data with them of a certain type that week. So I've uploaded an 8GB .jpeg to make them think I uploaded a ton of pictures. And since it's all dummy data, it compresses SUPER well so it only took about 10 seconds to upload the whole file to the cloud.
Can't wait to see you having 1 million subsctibers
it'll be someday i know it....
With regards to the username issue when connecting to the NAS, wouldn't the NET USE command be useful in this situation? It should allow you to map a drive letter to a share, and supply a different username at the same time.
~12:00 windows sorting. What I do for this is zero pad my collections, but this is definately a pain for large collections (> 99 items), but it's always something to consider, so 98 can handle 01 and 10 correctly, but not 1 and 10. Ditto, ironically, with Google's drive fs interface (which is why I learned this and don't know why it does it that way, it might be a configuration item you can tweak in drive fs that I haven't found yet.)
Side comment: I like your music choices for your videos :)
Thank you!
It's funny hearing "I'd have to come up with 2TB of data to copy" in this video, I have a 40TB RAID10 setup myself with "only" 16TB free at this point
Love the video :-) one question are the network drives FAT or NTFS?
Hey! It doesn't work that way. The network drives are using ext4 or Btrfs, but the thing is, Windows doesn't really care about the file system of network drives using SMB.
You could use dd to write blocks of bytes near instantly. IIRC, you don't even have to actually write the bytes with dd, you can actually just allocate the space on the disk *as if you had written* the bytes.
NFS is usually my go-to for network storage, mainly since it's pretty much universal.
Hi Michael, I made a custom Windows XP ISO and if you want, I'll send you the link for it.
