Probably one of the best thumb release tutorials.
Little thing that helps if you want to shoot your thumb button like a hinge which i recommend trying. let me know how it goes...
Set your thumb button into a position where you can anchor your thumb to the metal of the release without it going off. it should also match up with the curvature of your thumb.
When releasing the arrow, do your hinge mechanic while gently pulling through and keep your thumb pressed in.
I recommend experimenting with different positions on your thumb button when trying this to see what works.
either way, bit of fun. i'm still figuring out whether i like this release method but it's something i've discovered along the way.

Thanks for the video! I for one really like a closed caliper, two stage release for hunting. I clip it on the loop ahead of time and leave it hanging in the tree. Keeps my hands free and warm in my pockets until I pick up my bow and grab the release.
Also thanks for the tips on the gross motor movement and making a fist. So many people say just set your thumb and keep pulling. Well it never goes off for me. This helped a ton!
George Ryalls gave a talk and said.... He can tow y'all around the room with a release just pulling. It will never go off by pulling.
The Stan Onnex you showed is a closed jaw but the other jaw is spring loaded so it folds out of the way to load onto your string then closes back to stay on the loop. Best button on the market imo.

I shoot my thumb by relaxing my hand instead of tensing my hand. With the barrel tucked deep in the thumb, the relaxation of my hand causes it to drag and fire.
Do you find it’s coming off the back wall when you do that? Or is that not a problem
@@brandonfeenstra2035 I still pull hard through the back wall. Think of it like holding yourself up by hanging from a bar and slowly losing your grip.
Good video - this helps me. The video confirms I’m going in the right direction. I just switched from an index to a Trufire Synapse thumb button. It’s set up in four finger configuration to help get my pinky engaged in compressing and closing my hand to execute the shot.

Great advice as always from Nate! Thanks for the video! I use a Tru Ball HBX as a kind of thumb button release. The HBX is a hybrid between backtension, thumb button whatever. I pull until i hear the click and tension my hand until it fires. The last bit of pressure is done by the thumb. Too bad they don't make this release anymore.

Great video!! Squeeze the hand - makes so much sense! I always thought you were supposed to rotate your hand flush to the face, which is why I got the rotating head.. Need to work on that. Good thing I shoot every day.

I'm so glad that you addressed this Nate. We just had a discussion about this subject on ArcheryTalk. I never understood people trying to shoot a thumb button release like a hinge. It makes zero sense. If I want to shoot a thumb button like a hinge, why wouldn't I just shoot my hinge instead (and vice versa). There's just too much of a stigma in the archery community that anything other than a "surprise" shot is complete heresy. Tim Gillingham, James Lutz, and Kyle Douglas (three of the top archers in the world) just entered the chat and would like to have a word about that stigma.

But my prefered release style is an open hook that opens away from my face (Carter Ember or Truball 360)
Im a thumb puncher when I get tired, I prefer a deliberate squeeze.
Hey Nate! After watching this I went to the range and tried the fist squeeze technique described and am getting better results, so thanks for the tip. I also noticed, I do torque the release. If I try to hold it horizontal, I'm hitting my neck with my thumb button and am not able to execute the shot. Ideas or suggestions? I'm shooting a BlackOut 4-finger hook style release. Thanks!
Update on the "making a fist"... I am so much more consistent now! I may have to write "fist" on the inside part of the riser LOL
It's very simple. If you shoot a hinge and thumb button, activate the release the same in both.
I shoot a button one of two ways. First, by just pulling until the shot fires. I have to shoot often to be consistent with this method. Secondly, by placing the thumb on the barrel in the thumb joint and then continuing to roll the thumb slowly on the release while pulling continuously. I have to be careful with the latter method to avoid punching.
Ive always used my whole hand when using the index finger release and now the thumb release the last few seasons. I tried one of those silverback tension releases and hated it. Never knew when it was going to go off. I want a trigger be it the thumb or index finger...i want 100% control of the shot.
I found myself having terrible target panic and trigger punch tendencies with my thumb release. I was always afraid of prematurely hittimg the barrel once my thumb made contact with it. This got worse once i dropped my brand new rx7 ultra out of a tree from bumping my barrel. Im wanting to learn more about them so i can better help my customers with them in my archery shop.

I started developing panic shooting an index so I switched to a UV button and learned how to shoot with a surprise release. I come into anchor, my thumb captures the button and then I just pull and the shot releases. The more I 'choke up' on the button with my thumb the quicker it goes off. For me it's important to divert my focus from aiming to applying my thumb in a consistent way to that barrel. If the shot doesn't fire when I expect it to I just keep pulling and it does.
I’m 1000% with you on this, you described my release method exactly, I’m shooting a TrueBall Rave and love it, I watch several RUclipsrs so I’m not sure which one that described it as when your pulling through the shot, I also drive my elbow directly behind me, he said your hand will naturally stretch and you won’t have to press your thumb into the barrel whatsoever and it’s absolutely true, I’m using the release exactly as it’s set from the factory and I have 2, I’ve been shooting a year and a half this way and absolutely love it as I get a surprise release each and every time! Hopefully Nate comments on this as far as if he’s heard of it before as Ive never enjoyed archery more and I’ve been shooting for 35 years. I also harvested a nice SD whitetail last fall and have 100% confidence shooting this way while hunting.

I activate my thumb button by my hand stretching. My thumb rests firmly on the button. And as I continue to apply more back tension. My hand/thumb stretches and that’s what makes the button fire. Not a conscious movement of it. If I consciously move my thumb to activate… boy here comes the target panic 😢

Absolutely! Although not my favorite. This year I'm giving the Huntworth Ames gloves a try. Thumb and index removed so you have all the dexterity you could want!

i just got a new hoyt fx comp target bow. well new to me, I'm partially disabled looking for first thumb release, not looking for a cheap one that will hurt you, l like the carter wise choice desig, whats your thoughts also do you have any used ones

Find a thumb barrell position that's good and comfy. Then work on travel adjustments.
@averagejackarchery I just got it today. I built a trainer and been practicing with it. I went out and gave it a shot with one of my bows. It's definitely different from the index. I will have to change peep height on my bows. I will mess around with it doing blind target shot to figure out the tension on it.
Recommendation for a thumb release for someone buying their first one and strictly for hunting. Would prefer to leave it hang on the d loop.

There’s another method. Wrap the thumb around the button, pull elbow back and relax hand until the shot breaks.
I can't get passed the rubber tube on your peep sight. Other than that great video.
I wished every new archer would see this video BEFORE buying any release. Letting a newbie buy a wrist strap trigger that is not set properly short should be against a law. lol 👍👍

I often seek advice from professionals on RUclips on all things archery. When I see you still using rubber tubing to bring your peep site into alignment it just makes me look to someone else for advice. Rubber tubing went out the window decades ago.
Iiiiiiiits a backup bow. Relax. And in my shop I install 2-3 rubber tubed peeps a week. They're still very popular even with seasoned archers.
With the exception of Cabelas, Base Pro Shops, and similar outfits, every pro-shop I’ve been to can easily correct for peep sight rotation - without the need for rubber tubing. For strings that have a tendency to stretch you can install a peep tuner to make adjustments on the fly. Bow techs that use rubber tubing either don’t know how to correct for peep rotation or they just don’t want to mess with it. Either way, rubber tubing is insanely unreliable and will break when you need it most.
