After 20 years of shooting pistol and rifle, this video just changed the game for me as a new bow shooter. The best example I can give is that at 70 yards, trying to focus on the front sight I only hit the target 2/6 times. Following this instruction, I was 6/6 with three in the kill zone. Glad I watched this. Trying my hand at archery soon and apparently the aiming technique is the opposite of firearms aiming. I've been shooting for 20 years, 8 time expert in the Marines. When shooting firearms you focus on the front sight post. If your target is clear you're doing it wrong. Will definitely be an adjustment to focus on the target and not the sight.

Same thing with practical pistol shooting . Especially with slide mounted optics you can occlude the dot to help. I wonder about sticking black tape I. Front of your pine would do the same
I’m VERU new to archery, but have been shooting guns for years. This is the exact opposite of what I’ve always been taught to do (focus on the front sight)….but I’ll give it a shot.
That’s why shooting with both eyes open is better. Makes target easier to see past ur pin. That’s exactly why my son is going through right now this video helped because of course why listen to dad.
The greatest "aha" moment in archery is when you draw your bow and it is in the gold almost every time. Let muscle memory make all the X's. Your channel is the best hidden gem on you tube, even though you are giving away all the secrets. Great job.
Thank you Lloyd. Bowhunting and archery can be hard enough to get into by yourself. People shouldn't have to pay for this kind of information. Our goal is to help everyone be the best they can be!
I release as soon as I get a good sight picture. Hunting for the "perfect" shot just leaves to pin travel. He's correct, nobody can hold anything completely still. Slow controlled breathing and release on exhale. Inhale before the aim, exhale, first good placement and release.
I think its verry interesting what opinions all the different shooters have. On a pistol you focus on the sights on a rifle you should focus on the target on a bow with some sort of aiming device most poeple say you should focus on the pin. Now you say focus on the target witch i have to do anyways because i shoot classic intuitive. My rule of thumb is the one that hits the target is right. So if you dont hit it you just havent found your style. I noticed to if i shoot rifle im much more calm maybe its because i dont see the movement of the rifle that much.
Absolutely. It’s your perception of the sight and the target and what you’re comfortable with. Most archers find it most comfortable with this method because of the extra movement, but not everyone is the same.
Your videos and explanations are the best I have seen on RUclips. I picked up some good points in this video. I would like to see you do a video on properly setting up a 3 pin and 5 pin sight. Keep up the good work.
@@BowOnlyOutdoors I like to see properly setting up out of the box setting up a 3 pin sight. I have seen different videos where one person said that you set up the first pin by moving the sight box and then you set the middle pin by moving the pin. Someone else said that you move the sight box for the top and middle pin. Also before you set up your sights, should make sure that your rest is setup properly? Thanks for asking me. I believe you can easily clarify these questions through a video.
I will go out today and give this a try with my new bow. Because that sounds exactly what im going thru. Thank you for the tips. I'll update later with my new results. 👍
I teach people this all the time. I tell people it's like learning to drive a car. You want to look up the street not down your hood. Same thing with sights and targets. Makes it super easy with both eyes open to. Though it is weird at first.
This is exactly right this is the best way for archers to understand and it Works 100%. The first shot or two provided your bow is setup properly, and with good form, release, n follow through your arrow will find the bullseye!!! I taught my Nephew this 15 yrs. Ago and he was stunned at how much easier n consistent it was to shoot n hit the center of the bullseye.👍🏹🏹

Dude, this just helped me in the most unexpected way. Okay, so of course I'm looking for archery tips for myself. Normal. Thank you. I'm absolutely going to try this tomorrow when I practice. BUT, I'm also writing a fantasy novel and, I must admit, working out the logistics for all of the species gets a little technical. Now I've decided that my dark elves are awesome archers, but they also have cat's eyes. This decision was pure inspiration and I'm honestly looking for a way to justify it. Why is this relevant to the cost of tea in China? Because the shape of a cat's pupils allow them to look at a narrow area and keep *everything* in that area in focus. That means that the mouse, the blades of grass between them and the mouse, are all in perfect focus the whole time they're looking. It helps them get perfect aim. (Then they decide to pounce, their pupils go all cray cray in a last ditch effort to gather just a bit more information, and they lose their minds and do their lee roy jenkens bolt for the prize.) Now I knew this little factoid about cats because I love my kitty so, duh. I also love archery and I'm interested. But this video just tied it all in on why my little dark elves are such rockin' archers. They don't have the focus problem that people do! When they narrow in on their target, everything between them and the target is clear as a bell. They don't have to choose. So the information you just provided is going in my book. I'm so grateful that your handle is going in my thank you notes at the beginning of the book. "Bow Only Outdoors" will be in the notes unless you have something you like better. Inspiration comes from the most unexpected places, but it is rare and when it comes, it's absolutely wonderful. So thank you for finally closing my loop!
Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine ruclips.net/user/postUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older. But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.
Great advice. I concentrate on the target. I was taught that in the Marine Corps. You want the rear/peep sight and the target to be clear. And you want the front sight post/pin to be blurred. If you're a hu ter, you want to see the movement of your target. So you can alter your shot. You will definitely shoot better. It might not make sense, but once you're accustomed to it, you'll wonder why you did it the other way in the first place.
@EggShensSixDemonBag You must have been in the new Corps. How do you see your target at distance if your concentrating on your front site? Get your site picture, then blur the front site to see target and any movement. Shot expert every time doing it that way.

I question if you were actually in the Marine Corps if you were taught to focus on the target with fixed iron sights.
The idea presented here is great. Could I bother you and watchers with a question. I am completely new to archery. My very first few shots landed on the target :-) and 5th was a bulls eye :-))) For some reason all my shots go to the right of my aiming. About 4 inches to the right at 15 yards. So this is a lot! When I aim 4 inches to the left, then I get the bulls eyes. When setting up the bow's accessories, I have lined up the arrow rest center with the limbs center and with the aiming dots. Also, the string is perfectly lined with the limbs. In theory, arrow should go straight but its not. I tested various arrow brands with the same result.
Michael, How exciting that you are getting into archery! It is a ton of fun, and hopefully I can try to help you out here. In the simplest of forms to fix this problem, it is likely that your sight is off and is causing the arrows to go to the right. Simply adjust your sight towards your arrows (to the right) and tighten it back down. Shoot a group of arrows at 15 yards again and see the results from the arrow group. We want to adjust our sight based on the average of the arrows. The best way to do this would be to hang a Florescent string vertically plumb to the ground off of your target. Aim at the string and see where your arrows hit. If you shoot 6 arrows, you want an average split of 3 on the left and 3 on the right. If you adjust your sight and you get 5 out of 6 arrows on the right of the string, move your sight again, further to the right. If you get the majority of the arrows landing on average more on the left side of the string, you moved your sight too far. Move it back to the left slightly until your arrows average hitting equally on each side of the string. After the sight is sighted in at 15 yards, If the arrow drifts further and further to the right as you back up in distance, this is another issue I would be happy to help explain for you to fix. The sight won’t line up perfectly in line with the string and the arrow at rest. Since the cables are pulled to the right for a right handed shooters and left for a left handed shooter, the sight will typically sit slightly to the left of center on a right handed bow and right of center on a left handed bow because of the induced torque at full draw. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions. - Josh
@@BowOnlyOutdoors Dear Josh. Thank you so very much for your helpful response. I followed your guidance and was today able to land 20 arrows within inner circle. What I realized additionally, is that I tied the peep sight on a wrong side and when I was drawing the peep would rotate with the string nearly 180 degrees but not full 180 and was causing a distortion of a sort. After tying on the 'left' side, the peep is now immediately pulled to the correct position and perfectly square. I keep finding small issues like that which I wasn't aware of. Shooting is a great fun. Now making a short 20 yds range in my garden.
@@missmisiowa Michael, Awesome shooting!! Always continue to learn and improve and you will continuously get better and better! Keep up the great work. - Josh
I would like to thank again for the answer and also add that I found another issue within my setup - the arrow rest was grossly misaligned at draw which wasn't obvious. The arrows were tugged by it to one side on exit. I hope it makes sense? After adjusting the rest left-right, I have now arrows exiting straight on and much tighter grouping.
@@missmisiowa awesome! If you get a chance, check out walk back tuning. This can help ensure that the arrow rest is in the correct position horizontally or left - right. It is just one of many tuning methods to help achieve forgiving arrow flight. All the best, Josh
Paused the video... got to our home range... a few arrows latter: my groups are now the half the size as previously. Aaaaaand now I can shoot with both eyes open !!! Up until now I was so confused. I went from 6in groups to 1/2in groups just by doing this! Many people wouldn't realize this is there issue
Thank you for the tips! I’m new to archery and Il definitely have to try this next time I shoot.
Great information, didn't realize how much that helps!!!
I just can thank you so much
You are precise and not confusing
Your english is very clear
Many thanks ,i will try
I am an veteran archer 53 yrs i want to pursue this sport
Pls post some shortcuts like this🙏
Son & I are new in archery !!
Thank you ❤️
Best disclaimer ever!! ❤ Try new stuff, but do what makes you better
Hi Josh, I have been a bow hunter for many years, and ….try as I might…..could never consistently place my groups. Thankyou for the help.
You are very welcome!
Glad I watched this. Trying my hand at archery soon and apparently the aiming technique is the opposite of firearms aiming. I've been shooting for 20 years, 8 time expert in the Marines. When shooting firearms you focus on the front sight post. If your target is clear you're doing it wrong. Will definitely be an adjustment to focus on the target and not the sight.
thank you so much for the advice went from hits all over the target at 20 yards( I am new to this) to hitting 2-3 inch groupings almost immediately you just got yourself a new subscriber
Love to hear that! Glad it Helped!
Nice tip. New bow shooter, but reminded of target focus pistol and rifle shooting, Duh! Thanks
Thank you bro I just started three days ago and I was like what are these pins for and I focused on them and my target got super blurry then I focused on the target 100% and it worked started nailing them
Thanks for the tip. I’m definitely gonna work on that technique.
I think I do this already intuitively.. definately with an animal in front of me, I'm fixated on that sweet spot. Will analyse my shooting on the bag tomrrow. Gratitude. Happy hunting ❤
Brilliant advice has lifted my game
Best possible explanation my man
Thank you so much! I reach a point in which i could not understand what I have to do to improve precision an this video really helped me a lot!
That’s why shooting with both eyes open is better. Makes target easier to see past ur pin. That’s exactly why my son is going through right now this video helped because of course why listen to dad.
Dad knows best!
Very helpful. Question; how do you keep from blinking ?
Insaaaane grouping!! Will definitely have to try this out
It feels funny at first but without a doubt this is the way. Even your bad shots aren’t bad when you get this method down to a habit
This makes so much sense. Definitely trying it tomorrow. Thank you fornposting this
Yep, great tip. I figured out the same thing a few years ago.
I find this true because when I shot before I seen this I was all over the place thank you
Got my first bow yesterday I'm excited to start shoot today
Sick! I’d love 30 minutes of shooters with Josh. Thanks!
Im practicing my aiming to go to my fist competition i will use this technique tomorrow, thank you!
Your videos and explanations are the best I have seen on RUclips. I picked up some good points in this video. I would like to see you do a video on properly setting up a 3 pin and 5 pin sight. Keep up the good work.
Thank you James! More specifically, what do you all want to see on setting up a 3 or 5 pin sight?
- Josh
@@BowOnlyOutdoors I like to see properly setting up out of the box setting up a 3 pin sight. I have seen different videos where one person said that you set up the first pin by moving the sight box and then you set the middle pin by moving the pin. Someone else said that you move the sight box for the top and middle pin. Also before you set up your sights, should make sure that your rest is setup properly? Thanks for asking me. I believe you can easily clarify these questions through a video.
@@jehanlon1 absolutely! I would be happy to make a video over it. I will add it to the list!

@@BowOnlyOutdoors You are awesome!!!
Thank you soooo much man!!! Definitely trying this tomorrow!!!
Just found your channel. Great content! You got yourself a new subscriber!
Thank you!
This improved my shooting significantly, not just with my bow but also with my black powder iron sights... Thank you!
Thank you Tim!
Thank you for this. Very helpful, I’m new to bow hunting
Thanks soo much helped me become more consistent and accurate
In new to this and this is very helpful. I’ll definitely keep this in mind next time I go out.
smooth man. the ending was smooth.
I will go out today and give this a try with my new bow. Because that sounds exactly what im going thru. Thank you for the tips. I'll update later with my new results. 👍
Hope it helps!
@@keithdodson7536 hell yeah brother. I'm glad the young man was able to learn from someone with knowledge. So great to hear about kids out shooting bows instead of score streaks in COD. Good job being an amazing uncle :)
Thanks for the tip. What you said makes sense. Cant wait to try this. I missed my chance at a monster buck because i was focusing too much on getting the correct pin to align last year, wind change direction, it caught my scent, and booted.
Dang it! Sometimes those scenarios create the best learning situations. Wishing you the best of luck in this upcoming seasons and hope you get a good one!
Finally some real advice that makes sense.
Thanks a lot man I got asked by a good buddy of mine to shoot league with him and I wasn’t shooting to great and I needed a new bow so I bought one and got so frustrated because I can’t shoot well, I tried this and now I’m getting constant thanks a lot
Love to hear it! Keep up the good work!
Really just practice enough like this that your brain just aims for you because when you don’t think about it muscle memory takes over and does it for you
Thanks for the advice, subbed
This was a game changer for me dude. Paired this with John Dudley’s advice of having both eyes open and my groups improved tenfold. Subbed!
That's great!! Glad we could help!
Swamprat could you tell me the name of the video
(Then they decide to pounce, their pupils go all cray cray in a last ditch effort to gather just a bit more information, and they lose their minds and do their lee roy jenkens bolt for the prize.)
Now I knew this little factoid about cats because I love my kitty so, duh.
Such a helpful video!! I'm a total newbie at archery and can't wait to try this at the range
I hope you find it helpful! Thank you for the kind words!
Not sure what Marine Corps you were in but mine, the US one, you focus on the front site tip.
@EggShensSixDemonBag You must have been in the new Corps. How do you see your target at distance if your concentrating on your front site? Get your site picture, then blur the front site to see target and any movement. Shot expert every time doing it that way.
@@papaschuette Dunno, brotein shake, but consistently shot 8 or 9 out of 10 at the 500, Rife Expert and got PMI qualled while on FAP to the range, so there's that. Fundamentals.

This was posted 11 years ago. I entered 28 years ago, so I'm not sure what "new Corps" you're talking about. I question if you were actually in the Marine Corps if you were taught to focus on the target with fixed iron sights.
nicely done young fella
Cheers for this precious tip🙏
As I am new to bow hunting, this helps me a lot and something to work with. Thanks
You’re welcome!
If I've been focusing on pin since I started shooting, should I switch it up now at the start of deer season or wait until the seasons over to switch?
Try it when you practice and see what works best for you. 👍🏻
Michael,
How exciting that you are getting into archery!

Michael,
Awesome shooting!! Always continue to learn and improve and you will continuously get better and better! Keep up the great work.

All the best,
Josh
thanks i did not realize i was doing that just went and tried and it helped
Thank you. That information really works!
Awesome video man! I appreciate it.
Getting into archery this year. Very helpful and informative man. Thanks!
Thanks man, this really works
Paused the video... got to our home range... a few arrows latter: my groups are now the half the size as previously.
Aaaaaand now I can shoot with both eyes open !!!
Up until now I was so confused. A few months ago I was still shooting barebow. Righthand, my right eye is almost blind (45%), I shot intuitively and shot just as well as with the compound bow. Now I understand it, before that I just looked at the target. With the new compound, I suddenly looked at the sight.
Thank you so much man.
You’re very welcome! I am glad to see that it has helped you!
Will give a try tomorrow morning
How is it working for you?
This makes a lot of sense I’m going to give this a try thank you
Thank you this makes so much sense.
I get it, especially in a hunting context. But why does focusing on the front sight work for firearms?
This is great advice and it works. I’ve also heard some bow hunters say that they use the top of the pin itself as the area to put on their intended target instead of having the pin cover the bullseye. While others say they cover the bullseye
