    Thank you for watching this video on 25 technical photography terms that I think everyone (especially beginners) should know. Today, there's so much misinformation about how photography works: the science, theory, and technology behind how images are formed. In this video I wanted to provide not only the definitions of key photography concepts, but how they relate to each other, gradually explaining the photo-taking process as a whole.
    This was my first voiceover, so let me know what you thought in the comments below. I plan to continue voicing my own videos now; it's about time my channel knows a little bit about me.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________
    I'm adding an errors and clarifications segment to my video descriptions because often in my research, certain things elude me.
    Errors:
    Lightroom & Photoshop are mis-labeled (at 8:30)
    The Pros/Cons for Auto Mode stay on-screen for Shutter Priority Mode (at 9:33)
    (for the Pros/Cons for Shutter Priority Mode, read the transcription provided above)
    Clarifications:
    ISO is not an "acronym" but a mere shortening of the organization's name.
    "DOF does not describe the depth of the part of the image that is in focus. It describes the depth of the part of the image in which points are adequately sharp. Only objects at one specific distance are in focus, so the depth of points in focus is always 0. An object in a scene is in focus if all the light from a point on the object is refracted to a point on the image. With an optically perfect lens, this occurs only with points a specific distance from the optical center of the lens. Any points closer to or farther from that optical center have their light refracted into a blur circle on the image. The farther the object is from the distance at which points are are in focus, the larger is the blur circle. When the image is printed or displayed, a blur circle is either so small that the human observer cannot tell the circle from a point, or large enough that that the observer can tell the circle from a point. When the circle is observably different from a point, that part of the image seems blurry. When the blur circle is small enough to be indistinguishable from a point, it is called adequately sharp. The DOF describes that part of the image in which blur circles are adequately sharp. The DOF of an image depends on several factors, including the visual acuity of the observer, the print or display size, and the viewing distance. To promote comparability of DOF between images, standard observer acuity of 6/6, print size of 8" x 10", and viewing distance of the image diagonal are often assumed." - FingerPainter from DPREVIEW

    Didn't came back to this channel since the ISO/aperture/Shutter Speed video in which I congratulate you for being the FIRST (and as far as I know the only) one into having the animation skills and the intelligence to do 3 rather straightforwards concepts into CLEAR explanations.
    And here you have achieved that AGAIN.
    I missed you.
    Keep the amazing work.

    Apalapse, I'm glad you use your own voice now; nice to meet you! Since you asked, your speech pattern is very steady, which can challenge some people's attention span, especially nowadays, but you have a voice strong in character. Your dispensing of information is very efficient and effective, explanations concise; this makes every word worth hearing. What you say to be your opinion near the end I find objectively true, and the way you speak accentuates the objectivity of factual statements.

    Just ran across your channel while trying to put together a list of videos I can point people to when they are starting out or moving from their phone to a mirrorless or dslr camera. I am very happy to see that you actually explain what ISO is and what it does. To many people believe that it is sensitivity. I also cannot understand why anyone would give you a thumbs down on this video.

    • @Apalapse
      @Apalapse  3 года назад

      Thank you! Yes, the misconception surrounding ISO is one that I have encountered not in online articles but on RUclips turotials and even in the three photography classes I have taken in college... it's not hard to understand ISO is just amplification, but most photography teachers don't teach it because it's "confusing," when really, saying ISO is sensitivity is more confusing IMO.

    I have a few questions. Learning the camera itself is like learning how to drive a stick shift - each clutch is different and each camera is different - I have had a few DSLRs what I've done is shoot a few photos in auto mode - to get the feel of the camera and then use those settings to start with in manual mode. Am I the only one who does this? Is this method a good one? Is there a better way?
    I think your voice sounds wonderful! You don't need the voice-overs. You sound fine just the way you are.

    As an old professional photographer (using 35 mm SLRs and medium format range finders), I find this content excellent . . . even though my focus is on the translation of modern digital photographic terminology to old-fashioned film photography. The pre-exposure stuff is nearly identical; post exposure--including ISO--is another matter. I keep trying to relate ISO to the old film speeds. I think I have figured it out. Thanks for the info on JPEG and RAW: that will help me! Still, I have a lot to learn. I have subscribed and hope to hear more. Incidentally, I slowed this down to a .75 playback speed, and it helped (me, at least). Maybe a few others could benefit from slowing the flow of facts down. Anyhow, Thumbs Up!

    • @Apalapse
      @Apalapse  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment, I'm glad I could help you out! ISO is definitely one of the terms that didn't migrate well from film to digital; it's something I had to "re-wire" since I was so used to the mantra: "ISO is the sensitivity of the image sensor, etc. etc." I will try and slow down the videos in the future, thanks for that feedback. Take care.

    Excellent presentation that I will recommend to my students to watch, your graphics are clear and simple. Funny that, when I was learning basic photography, over 50 years ago, the term “bokeh” did not exist, the speed of film was usually quoted in “ASA” units ( American Standards Association). The concept of “SNR” also was not even thought of, it was just “fast films are more grainy”.

    • @Apalapse
      @Apalapse  4 года назад

      The advent of the digital age has certainly ushered in some new terms into photography that haven't been adopted quite yet, which has led to some misnomers and semantical issues, which while ususally just a technicality, have actually caused harm and misled photographers into making poor decisions. The term "SNR" which you say is something fairly new is definitely one that most photographers haven't heard before but one that affects all digital images. The same can be said with "ASA" ratings and "ISO" ratings, which aren't "ratings" per sey but arbitrary amplification settings in the camera that are a relic from the days of film. That's why I created this video: to help people realize where we are in photography, what terms are relevant, and what they all mean from a technical, accurate standpoint.

    At 1:15 , your f numbers are missing the slash mark to indicate they are ratios (and thus the higher the denominator, the smaller the aperture). It should be: f/1.4 f/2.0 f/2.8 etc.
