- We finally made it to Middlebury, Indiana to see the birthplace of our home on wheels! We were fortunate that Grand Design graciously allowed us to make a video of our visit, and even gave us a private behind-the-scenes tour of the Momentum line during production! We also took the standard (off production) tour, and it was pretty amazing to see the factory in both states. Grand design offers tours for each of their lines Monday through Wednesday at 2pm. While you might be able to do a walk-in tour, it's best to make a reservation (see link below).
The tour takes you through the entire build process from frame to PDI on completed rigs. Questions and comments are encouraged during the tour, and our tour guide (Jeff) was very knowledgeable. They do tours of each major line (Momentum, Solitude, etc.) separately, so if you want to see more than one line, plan on separate tours.
We also took a drive around the Heritage Trail, and took a tour of the RV Hall of Fame.

If you ever take the tour again, there is a KOA in Middlebury about 1 mile for the plant. It is a nice place, my parents have stayed a few times there.

My wife and me just got our Grand Design Imagine last fall, and totally love it, we are weekend’s only for know , still got 4 years till we retire, we tried last September for a tour , but they were closed for a dealer only tour, so we went further south into Middlebury and toured Jayco , Some similarities, but we now know where the grand design fits in , we love watching your videos, very envious of your Life style hope some day to be full time. So many beautiful places right here in the United States to see,
We just returned from a tour of Grand Design's Transcend line. It was awesome to see where our rig was built and meet some of the team there. Quality through and through, enthusiastic and dedicated employees all around. Well worth the trip, and if you go, be sure to get donuts from Rise & Roll!

Thank you for posting this video as it shows the inner workings of how the RVs are put together. That is huge for potential owners to know what they are dragging down the interstates. If I didn't love my Tiffin so much.....you might have sold me on a GD Momentum!!!
Saw YT vid 2nite of 38' Montana FW on its side after taking a corner 2 fast. Shocked 2 c in spite of gentle handling it basically fell apart being set back on its wheels. Came apart @ the seams with back end mostly coming off & left (down) side falling apart, leaving slide & furniture on road. Side where slide had been disintegrated when slide fell out, looked like entire side was about 2 collapse & take roof with it.
Makes me want 2 reconsider wood vs metal framing.

Loved this video - Gives me and others a behind the scenes look at the construction in areas we'll never be able to see with our own eyes. Of particular interest to me was the construction of the roof trusses and support. I'm getting ready to install a 12 volt fan in our Reflection. Now I know without question what is up there to support the box for the fan. I knew I likes the Grand Design before but after viewing your "tour" I know I have a quality rig. Thanks again.............

I was against 5th wheels because of the need for taking my motorcycle along and didn’t want to sacrifice living space to a garage. But the new Momentum with the garage Under the bed big enough for full sized bike or UTV changed that. What a genius idea, and great floor plan. Half the cost including truck of the motorhome I want.
We went through the same process.. Originally we wanted a Class A DP and a hydralift for the bike. But a 950lb bike + 400lb lift adds about 2000lbs (after you calculate the leverage using the distance from the axle to the lift). So that was going to put us in tag axle territory. A.K.A. Big $$$ territory! Then we started looking at toy haulers. We're very happy our path brought us to our current home on wheels! We love it! Thanks for watching, Stan! 😊

Years late to the game but this is an excellent video, like the rest I've seen so far. I can't afford a new one but this gives me an idea on how they are built should I decide to buy one. I really enjoy the build of my 1995 Holiday Rambler but it's not a Toy Hauler which means no bike. Thanks and on to other videos. Oh, the only concern I have is if my 2005 Chevy 3500 has enough sauce to move one of the but I'm sure it does. When I moved my HR from Utah to Nevada I took it across the scale and the combo weighed in at 25,600 with me in the truck and a full tank of fuel. Brakes would be the issue but having the Banks Speed brake system has helped a lot. Like when you were heading to Vegas and the brakes cooked and then you remembered the truck exhaust brake system. I dig the discs amd suspension you had installed later on.
As I get closer to retirement...I have been kicking around the idea of a Class A and since I too have a 2017 Indian Roadmaster, I have thought that I would need to tow it but since discovering your channel, I have a different thought now. Thanks Chad and Tara. Great videos.
After numerous warranty issues, and a nightmare of an experience with my 2017 Highland Ridge, Open Range 3X, my next 5th wheel RV will be from Grand Design. Grand Design was highly recommended by all the different Rv technician who had performed warranty repair work on my Open Range. I really hope Grand Design continues to set themselves apart from the other manufacturers by staying focused on quality, and also continuing to do their final quality control inspections. That is huge!

Hey guys great video my wife and I follow you on the tube. We also own a Grand Design Reflection 5 th wheel. My only real concern with our rv is the paint quality on the chassis its not good. The rust you have already in the environment you travel in. Our unit has this problem too, right from delivery and now I have repainted all metal exposed with a hight quality paint. But overall we are happy with our rv. Hopefully one day we can take the plant tour, and maybe we might even bump into you guys in person. Awesome video tour of The Grand Design warehouses. My next RV will be a grand design as Forest River no longer makes the true working play that we currently own. The new work and play look like a Hyperlite, they are no longer are made like car haulers.

We also were able to take the private Momentum tour back in June 2017. We really enjoyed the slow pace which allowed for a multitude of questions with very informative answers given by the staff. Thanks for the tour. We just traded our 2013 Winnebago One 26RK (aka trailer from hell) for the Imagine 2250 RK. Hands down this is a better built trailer than any of the dozens of others we looked at before deciding on this one. Perfect couple's trailer. Not quite a Lance or Arctic Fox but also not as pricey.

I have a Reflection 5th wheel 31MB and that Nautilus system is fantastic. Just goes to show you that if you want to "do the right thing", the Nautilus is a great example. I came up with a new prototype floorplan, blending the 31MB and the 367BHS and the national sales manager for Reflection accepted my suggestion with a surprising degree of enthusiasm. Maybe we'll see the 31MB Plus someday as a new Reflection or a new entry level Solitude.

I really enjoyed this video. The wife and I are planning on doing a tour ourselves. We don't have the same kind of money to spend that yall do, but it's looking like we are going to purchase an Imagine 2150RB sometime between November 2018 and March 2019. We have been trying to imbibe as much information about the RV world as we can over the past year. (First time RV owners). There are so many scary stories out there that we have nearly called the whole idea off on many occasions. I am really looking forward to seeing how they put the Imagine line together.

Interesting video and a very good job 👍 of filming it.
It looks like a well made RV but the construction 🔨 is similar to some others if not the same. Any idea how long this company has been building RV’s just curious or I can look it up. If you ever get a chance to do another tour check out the DRV which my wife and I recently purchased. It’s not a toy hauler but one we live in full time. We also use it for traveling but with its size of 44’ and my age of 72 we don’t stray but about six hundred miles from our home base. I loved that one with the blue on its nose and another color or two. I will have to go back in time and checkout your other videos to see your RV and other things you have and watch your travels. My wife and I started RVing 51 years ago and we don’t regret a day of it. Sense we sold our company and our house plus boat we love relaxing now and should have done full timing years ago. You both make for a sweet couple. Thank You So Very Much, and Cheers to both of you......👍

Changing Lanes - You have a fantastic fifth wheel to say the least. I don’t know 🤔 why I didn’t recognize the brand but thinking about it a bit LOL I do know about it. One of my sons has an Indian motor cycle that he purchased from an Indian motor cycle dealership about a 1/16 of a mile from his home it looks like yours but he sold his HD to purchase his 2018 Indian last year. I wouldn’t leave it behind either if I could still ride LOL 😂 yep but I do have 3 wheeler HD I have had 4 years now. I just started watching your other videos when I received a notice you replied to me. I get a bit confused at times my fingers don’t always type what their supposed to LOL darn spell check to filling in the blanks. My husband and I purchased a 2018 Solitude 310GK-R this past May. We toured the Grand Design factory on June 27, 2018. After going through the tour on how they make the Solitudes, it confirmed that we made the right decision on purchasing a Grand Design. We love our Solitude! We plan on becoming full-timers in 1 1/2 years. Now, just to get rid of all of our things plus sell our house.

Very little insulation on roof edges and I am not sure that Marine Grade OSB is a real thing. I could be wrong. It would be interesting to compare the Outdoors RV construction to the GDRV. They are nice looking units and definitely more fancy then our Timber Ridge 24RKS but the Northern Alberta Oil fields and campsites have a lot of Arctic Fox and ORV units even in the winter(skirted). This is hard country for a trailer with -40 winters and +35 summers and the roads are brutal. Glacier Peak line would maybe compare but they are out of my price range. Arctic Fox 27 5l would be our next trailer. But if I lived where you folks do, was a full timer and could afford it your truck, bike and trailer would be a dream outfit. As always, we enjoyed watching how our house was built! Wolf and I are curious though, as to what all is TRULY different underneath from, say, a Raptor or a Voltage. One of my favorite marketing stories is about how Coors started advertising that they brewed their beer with "filtered water." So did everyone else, but they made it sound like it was THEIR idea. :-D If I ever made it to Elkhart I'd like to do several comparison tours of different factories if that were possible or offered. I did see on Instagram this week that someone who is living in a Fuzion with her young family noted that her garage is NOT very insulated - so they put the babes in the bedroom and made the garage the master bedroom so they could be the ones who suffer from the heat and cold.
We've been in some pretty cold weather.. Lowest was in the teens and one night in single digits last winter. We did buy a Dyson space heater for those extra cold days when we didn't want to be running the furnace, and it we barely had to run it. And that was before we had a layer of carpet in the garage when in office mode. 😀 I'd be interested to see what others do also. But, honestly, even if they were identical or a couple of "R's" better, we'd still pick GDRV for their customer service.
I'd walk thru those trailer closely. Then walk thru a grandesign closely. You will see the difference.

I would love to go to Heartland and give them some quality control tips. Just bought our 39MB three weeks ago. Took it out on the first trip last week and it seemed like it was just falling apart. Issues with wiring, hydraulics, doors not shutting when level, etc.
Very nice video, factory tour was great. I wish with all the care they take to build a great unit that they did not do an aluminum roof frame instead of pine. That seemed like the weak link but other than that it’s an awesome unit
Thanks, Joe! I agree... aluminum would likely be better. Likely just one of those things where... would the benefit be worth the extra cost?... I go on our roof every week or two and it's very solid and I weigh a good 225. So the other factors are weight and water resistance? If you get water under the TPO, I think it's a bad day no matter what the material... everything south of it is wet. Along that line, I'm sure there are a lot of things that could be "better", but they're also putting our a very good quality unit at a price that's reasonable. Most of the units with the best of the best weigh 24K and cost 50 - 75K more... So, we're pretty happy with our "higher end" but not "highest end" rig. 😊

Great job, great video. I subscribed. My only hesitation with Grand Design is the OSB floor and roof. Wish it were plywood. I like the style and finish of Grand Design. But I like the Plywood of Jayco on the floor and roof. Wish I knew what type of osb that is at least. If you know thanks, that would be fantastic information. 🙂

Here's what I found out: "The product used is more of an engineered substrate versus OSB or chip board. It is infused with a resin which makes it “marine grade” meaning that it can be exposed to water directly. Normal tongue and groove plywood is prone to de-lamination and voids in the layers which leads to soft spongy floors." My personal experience: I have walked through many RV's (at shows, etc) where the floor does have that spongy feeling. Don't remember which brands, but we never feel that in our floors... Nice and solid. Hope that helps! -chad

Found your channel by accident, We have a Imagine 2150 and love it. My wife and I really enjoyed your video and our still catching up on your earlier content. You guys earned a subscribe. Looking forward to some upcoming videos. We would like to know how your BigMo pulls and what you are hauling it with? What is the load capacity of your garage? Load capacity of door/patio? We would consider getting one like yours down the road, even not having any toys to haul (as of yet). Such a great layout and so many uses for the garage. Also love the full paint, that was a upgrade that is worth every penny, your guys rig is gorgeous!
Thanks, Gregg! We pull with a 2017 F350DRW with 3.55 axle and it pulls great! The garage is rated for the full cargo capacity of the rig, which is ~ 3400lbs for us. It's obviously different for every rig depending on options. Off the top of my head, I want to say the patio is rated for 1500lbs and 3000lbs as a ramp. Great video is there any chance you noticed whether the garage floor is waterproof to a degree that it would be possible to hose out that area without worrying about water creeping into the substructure? Also if they showed any of the electrical do you know if the wiring harness is standardized to a point where wiring would be run back into the garage area and stopped off for additional speakers even if you don’t get them in your particular model
Knowing how ours is built, I don't think I would just hose out the garage. Definitely not waterproof but it could handle a wet mop I think. Nothing standard about wiring in most towables that we've seen. Wiring is all over the place and that's pretty normal. You might see harnesses in some of the highest end fivers like DRV or Luxe.

We are wanting to see the 399th. I really want that front patio. So far we haven't found one. With the me and the pups get up so early, it would be nice for us to sit out on the front patio so we dont wake everyone.

We are considering a Solitude and have also looked at the VanLeigh Beacon series RV. Both looks to be well made. GD looks like it uses wood trusses versus aluminum in the Beacon. Maybe a trip to the factories may be the deciding factor. Continued success with your rig and we enjoy your videos.
I'm mostly down to Solitude vs Beacon and have been searching for build details and anything I can find to give details about insulation, build quality, QA, etc, to decide between them. If you know of anything, please pass it along here or on their facebook page. I'm leaning toward Solitude, but had been pretty serious about Vanleigh before finding Chad and Tara's info.
I haven’t been to the factories of either brand but just looking at them I personally think Van Leigh seems to be built better.
Cliff Wallum what have you seen related to build quality that brings you to that conclusion? This is the kind of deeper dive info I am looking for. Thanks.

The cabinetry is definitely better in the Beacon compared to the Solitude. I also think they take more time in organizing the wiring . Seems to have more upgrades as standard features compared to the Solitude. They have started using Franklin furniture instead of the Thomas Payne furniture. Beacons come standard with 8k axles. Overall I think they have a better product compared to the Solitude. When we first started looking at 5th wheel trailers we looked at the Solitude and they were our first choice until we came across the Van Leigh line of 5th wheel’s .

Noticed a little rust on the welds of your outriggers at 4:34.... they should have used more rust preventive coatings. Or repaired it free while you were there!
Nice video however one thing that concerns me is the OSB board for flooring, that's cheap material to cut cost. JAYCO does not use OSB and I tend to use JAYCO manufacturing as the gauge for 5th wheel manufacturing. Good luck and beautiful rig.

It has been for us! We've been in the 100's and the 0's and very comfortable. The garage does benefit from a space heater though. We have a Dyson that works great!

I have a regular goose neck hitch. The weird hitch needed for these freaks me out. I pull a 37 foot horse trailer with a living quarters with no problem with my 3/4 ton truck. Don't even know it is back there. That weird hitch made me go with a pumper pull so as not to deal with that weird hitch that takes up the whole back of the truck! I went with the bumper pull Grand Design Imagine and am so happy with it at .a reasonable price. The fifth wheels are so expensive, start at double the bumper pull!
The imagine's are great campers! Glad you're enjoying it! Lot's of people love the Reese Gooseneck hitch on their fivers. Had we not already invested in this hitch and pin box, it would definitely be something we'd look into. Thanks for watching!
@@ChangingLanes Are you talking about the Reese Sidewinder, the one that moves the pivot point back 22"s, or is there some other Reese with a Gooseneck? I don't think Goosenecks are allowed under warranties, but what do I know. Nice job on the tour. I hear the road in Indiana are terrible, that's why all RV's come with a few things shaken loose, lol. Hello again. What’s you average speed on highways and secondary roads during optimal traffic?
We never go over 65. Just in no hurry and slower is better for the RV, truck, gas mileage, safety, etc. Secondary roads, we generally go about 5 under the speed limit and maintain a very generous buffer in front of us to stop.
