Awesome product! I have a gen 2, and it works really, really well on Fedora.
I didn't actually think that it would work flawlessly due to the two XLR-Ports and my previous experiences, but it's more than perfect.
Even the headphone jack is way better since I don't get base noise on max volume anymore 😳
@@MichaelNROH Indeed, whenever I need to use headphones I use the Scarlet sink, and usually set it to 96k or 192k sample rate, depending on what I am doing (I like to tinker with recordings).
Thank you for the video
I have the 3rd gen Solo and run Ubuntu. Just holding the 48V button never worked for me, but your method with unplugging it finally took it out of MSD mode. Thanks!
Weird that it only works for some though
@@MichaelNROH (slightly different internal firmware/revisions possibly?)
Thanks for the information. This is a great service to those of us wishing to migrate to Linux.
My Scarlett Solo works natively in Nobara 39. Just had it still plugged in when I restartet to boot into Linux. No manual file edit necessary.
Companies like Rolls Audio make nice budget analog studio mic preamp/mixers that you can output to your sound card's 3.5mm input jack no matter what kind of PC your running.
I got a Scarlett Solo Studio for my system, and it works beautifully on SolydK Linux. My only regret is that I didn't get the 2i2, but it wasn't available when I was ready to buy.
I kid you not, you hitterally released this video the day before I decided to drag it into my shopping cart!
Nice 😅
@@MichaelNROH was looking for reviews. And you talked exactly about what I was interested in.
Weirdly enough, the RUclips algorithm didn’t push your content to me for a while.
We need more Linux hardware reviews 🙂
I have a Steam Deck, and a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2nd Gen, just connected and it became the sound output, that was awesome, thou I'm still concerned if input is going to be fine, commenting on it later
have you tried qpwgraph to diagnose for the first io44 thing..? i think you can at least avoid loop to your ear..
i dont know if you already covered it, but i recomend cadmus for noise supression, my notebook mic sucks! but this program saves me the extra cost of an new mic.
I'm personally not a huge fan of noise surpression, since it can with the sound a bit. Nothing is perfect but for videos or basically anything outside of Gaming, using Surpression to "fix" something is not that great. Preferrably you wouldn't even use a noise gate
Comment for current behaviour: My Nobara 39 installation recognizes the Focusrite Scarlett Solo (3rd gen) natively. The audio device manager lets me select the Solo as input device and allows it to work as output as well.
ciao ho seguito le tue istruzione ma il pulsante 48v non si accende lo stesso. =(
Still have the first-gen 2i2 running on linux. Looks like the gen3 version is a lot more plasticky than first gen one. Didn't need to modify any channels either. Works out of box on the distros i have tried. I guess 3rd gen is quite a bit different then. Great video!
Technically, besides Mass Storage Mode, the 2i2 can also already work fine, but might not be configurable with alsa mixer all the the way.
Just depends on the Kernel and if it identifies correctly.
@@MichaelNROH Are you aware of the min kernel spec to do this? I really don't want to touch a Windows machine (even though I have one). My distro is on 5.15 on the machines that are of high enough spec to (hopefully) not have any issues.
Do you have any crackling/popping in the mic input? I have a gen 1 aswell and the mic is very noisy on linux. Couldn't find out why
@@pinpox I have had problem where my XLR mic is not plugged in very solidly and there is then some background noise until i re-plug it firmly. But haven't heard any crackling/popping. Using pipewire if that makes any difference.
edit: Ohh also make sure your phone is not near the device. It can cause minor interference also.
I'm amazed the 1st gen works with Linux. My research was saying that at least 3rd gen would be needed. It is 'USB class compliant', which assures compatibility, I understand. Very rare to find videos or much info at all about audio interface Linux compatibility, so this is great.
Benhinger works nicely on Linux as well.
I use a Rode AI-1 interface and it works out of the box on Linux.
I was thinking about getting one of these for recording mic audio via XLR. I currently have a Rodecaster Pro that I use for my podcast. Works great with OBS on Fedora. The only thing holding me back from using it while gaming is its size.
I want to consider something small like a Shure MOTIV MVI or Rode AI-1. I also considered Focusrite bc I've heard a lot of good about them but, nothing about Linux compatability.
Motu is another brand that has good interfaces working on Linux.
I've heard that the Rode AI-1 has some problems regarding base noise and overall low volume, but I can't verify that sadly
@@MichaelNROH Good to know. Sad to hear about the Rode. It's a little more modern with Type - C connector vs Shure's micro USB
Hi Michael, I have installed Ableton via WINE. The Focusrite interface works but I can't make the buffersize small. I also installed the original software via Wine but that doesn't work either and everything else doesn't work either. Please help
Wine doesn't read out the USB devices directly, which means that it does not even know what the device on the other side is.
Configuring the Focusrite series on Linux is usually done with Alsamixer and Jack.
Do you have any crackling/popping in the microphone? I have a gen 1 2i2 and the mic input makes noises on linux. I tried pipewire and pulseaudio and fiddling with the buffer sizes, but couldn't find the cause. Considering upgrading if newer versions don't have this problem.
The gain is probably set too high, or you might want to check your cables.
Especially long cables can interfere with themselves if rolled up.
Try increasing buffer size. It worked for me.
Increasing the buffer did the trick, it makes the latency pretty bad though. I will upgrade , since it’s still a gen1 2i2
I have scarlet solo it's just plug and play to me
Only downside is your audio is mono not stereo also you can connect your guitar in it too
You should be able to select different audio devices now. A recent patch of pipewire (probably), now let's me select a specific port which gets picked up like a mono mic instead of seperated channels.
This is an addon since by default, you don't actually want that behaviour given, that all available channels, shouldn't be mixed together
Get a Motu M2 or M4. They both work great on Linux and they have that great sounding ESS Saber dac.
I actually considered them the first time around, but jumped off due to them being more expensive, while featuring more ports that I don't need.
The seperated 48V are nice though
@@MichaelNROH I had the Focusrite at first but I swapped it for the Motu M2 because it sounds better connected to my external headphone amp.
+1 for Motu M2, was Plug&Play on Pop!_OS and didn't run into issues when testing. Didn't do a very in-depth dive though.
I had the problem with a gen1 device where the two inputs would be recognized as left and right of a stereo input which is a bit annoying. Did they fix that in the 3rd gen drivers or is it still left and right ?
That would actually be the default since you need dedicated channels to record. With the latest kernel updates, it's now also possible to select each input seperately, but most applications would have mixed them to mono anyway
Thanks for the reply. Do you happen to know what kernel version or driver version starts supporting this?
For my interfaces from Zoom and Behringer, it just works. UMC404HD - just works. Zoom U-22 - Just works. I have a friend with the Zoom U-44 and a UMC1820, and for him, on Linux - Just works. Full PnP function. Apparently even the crappier Behringer interfaces (UM2 and UMC22) and cheap interfaces from Donner (LiveJack and LiveJackM) just work out of the box in Linux, and they actually work better on Linux and Mac than on Windows, since Windows needs Asio4All. My fiancee has the UMC22, and Feren OS Linux on her laptop plays nicer with it than Windows on her desktop does.
Thanks for sharing.
It's nice to have some variety, even if the selection is a tad more limited
I got the solo 4 and i got it running perfectly fine with the alsa scarlett gui as well. BUT i cant for the life of me figure out a way to adjust the sample rate & buffer size. Does ANYONE know how to do it?
I play rythm games for which i need minimal audio latency.
If there is no way currently to adjust the sample rate, are there other ways to reduce audio latency in linux(mint)?
Help is greatly appreciated!!
I think it can be done with a couple of apps but I only remember qJackCtl by name. Looks complicated but it isn't for just these settings
My Solo 3rd Gen ist on Linux Plug & Play.
Was the mass storage mode on as well? Like, did it work with both?
Mine didn't work, but I read some experiences, where both can be on
Am I only one who does not see those lines on linked github page?
The changes got merged upstream. It's no longer required
@@MichaelNROH Well, the thing is I am get loopback - pc audio is being 'picked up' by microphone, and my alsa mixer is empty
whole hardware situation on Linux is quite sad as creating the drivers for it is not that much of a deal. However why should the devs bother with a system that is being used by 3% of the desktop users?
Because that 3% rule the tech world lol
"This video is not a review and more about the experience of using an interface in Linux" proceeds to review the Scarlett.
Wish you didn't waste all my time talking about an unrelated product. What was the point of that? Bad video structure... I came here for the 2i2 not whatever other nonsense.
Agreed lmfao
Just set up a Gen 3 Solo on linux with some new PreSounus speakers and very happy with it. alsa-scarlett-gui too
Bonjour comment avez-vous fait ? J’arrive pas a l’installer sur Linux
