Riggs was never crazy. He was depressed and struggling to find a reason to go on. Roger and his family gave him that reason.
🎯
A Mel Gibson movie I enjoy: Maverick, with Jodie Foster and James Garner.
And a guest cameo of a certain black bandit with a covered face, that had a "Don't I know you?" moment with Gibson. 😜😜😜
Maverick is an under rated movie.
🙂👍
@@joerogers9413 it is so good!
payback is a good one...I wonder when that will make the rounds on reaction channels:)
@@zvimur he also utters that he is to old for this shit.
The sax melody is played by David Sanborn, and the guitar - by Eric Clapton. Two music legends.
Plus Michael Kamen.
i dont mean to be so off topic but does someone know a way to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid forgot my password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Esteban Lucas instablaster =)
"God Hates me that's what it is." You put that in but skipped the comeback from Riggs...which I have been using for 34 years...best line in the movie. "Hate him back, it works for me."
Definitely one of the best comeback lines, ever.
What makes this line so darkly funny, in retrospect, is that Gibson has always had a very ambivalent attitude toward The Catholic Church, which undoubtedly has something to do with his drinking problem.
@@danielschaeffer1294 I did 12 years of Catholic school, last 4 in SuperMax; I absolutely can't relate to that.
That's my favorite line from the movie.
I love the reasoning of, "It's an 80's action movie. Therefore, you are wrong. [Physics don't apply]" :D
I remember watching a documentary a few years ago where they were talking to an armourer , the bloke who was responsible for all of the firearms on set . He worked on over 500 films and said that of the thousands of actors and extras that he worked with , only 2 actors didn't blink when they fired a gun , Clint Eastwood and Yul Brynner .
Josey Wales and Ramses. So let it be written. So let it be done.
Yeah, most actors aren't shooters. Training away the blink reflex takes practice.
Clint Eastwood is a veteran, so it makes a lot of sense.
The suicide scene with Mel Gibson in his home is one of the most powerful and emotional scenes ever put to film. With almost no words at all, that scene puts tears in the eyes of every person watching. Incredible acting.
My dad committed suicide by gun, so when I watch this movie and these scenes of Mel comes up where he wants to shoot himself, it just breaks my heart, because I always think of my dad in those moments. Mel's acting was amazing. He is great in his last movie Fat Man
With danny glover in desert too
Agreed, and it tells us quite a bit about his character as well. Again, with almost no dialogue. A great example of "show, don't tell."
Great acting. He definitely convinced me
Mel was always good at portraying damaged/unhinged characters
Maybe he was putting a bit of himself in each roles?
"Let's get the flock out of here."
I still say that after all these years.
One of the best things about the Lethal Weapon movies is the continuity.
which is why they should go for the other ones too
The worst thing about these movies is that there is only 4 and not 10!!! The tv series suuuucked
@@jacotromp59581 It's a good thing the series didn't continue into the 2010's. I doubt they could make a move like that now.
Pure entertainment. Not preachy, overly progressive.
@@DocMicrowave oh dude, this movie would never have worked in the 2010's, you are right. I always loved their "family" dynamic and the love they all had for eachother, and that always made me want to see them more. My favorite has always been number 3. Loved it.
Might speak to that...but, with each 'nother one, you get a new character, who is now part of the 'gang.' A new character added, with new exploration, in each one.
As a martial artist, this movie holds a special place in my heart because it introduced the American public to Gracie jiu-jitsu which went on to dominate the early days of the UFC. It also introduced the controversial martial known as Jailhouse Rock which was purportedly developed by prison inmates for defending themselves against surprise attacks within an enclosed space. Unlike traditional martial arts which treated hand-to-hand combat like a duel in which combatants started by squaring off against each other, JHR treated hand-to-hand combat as a fight for survival against an unexpected ambush, and it gained a fair amount of attention in the self defense community in the late eighties/early nineties.
Riggs trailer went along with the production. Every day they asked Mel "Today?" until the day he felt ready to do the scene.
Such an amazing performance and easily overlooked since it's in an action movie.
This was the perfect buddy cop dramatic comedy action film. Plus the fact that it came from a time when practical effects were the only way to do special effects is doubly impressive.
When they blink like that they are flinching and anticipating the sound and jerk of the weapon which is not good. Real marksman don't flinch like that when shooting. 😊
The jokes always felt organic and not forced because both being exmilitary, soldiers tend to have a dark sense of humor during tense situations.
I want to thank y'all for not cutting out the part when little Carrie left about Rhian being in love Martin and when Roger tried to rap . That's my favorite part of the whole movie
During their confrontation, after dealing with the jumper, on one of the close-ups on Rigg's eyes I saw sadness in there. Mel Gibson did an amazing job!
Murtaugh's wife is played by Darlene Love. She's actually a professional singer. Also, you should totally check out part 2. It gives more background into what happened to Riggs' wife and introduces Leo Getz, played by Joe Pesci.
Whatever you want, Leo gets.. get it?
I love the way the teddy bear creeps into shot when things get emotional. :)
My personal theory is Die Hard and Lethal Weapon not only same universe but takes place same time in dufferent precincts.
Maybe Murtaugh worked with Al Powell at some point. Might have gone to Academy togethrr or worked same precinct.
Die hard was great 👍
I can totally see that!
Nice call!
@@Hiraghm and vice versa during the last fight. Should have had feds there too for the arrests of Joshue but they were busy trying to get hostages killed on roof of NP.
They even use a similar bit with the Christmas message to the bad guys. In Die Hard it was attached to the bad guy. In Lethal Weapon it was in the Christmas tree.
16:22 I can't remember his name but there was a famous stunt coordinator/set armorer guy who said the only actors he ever worked with who didn't involuntarily blink when firing a gun were Clint Eastwood and Yul Brynner. Everyone else blinked.
I've not seen this in such a long time, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it.
Many thanks for covering this film.
I recommend a similar film, Running Scared. Stars Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines.
Yes, Great suggestion!
Definitely, loved that movie.
Seconded. Some of Billy Crystal's best work.
Two great action movies I couldn't believe aren't on The List already! 1. True Lies (1994) starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis 2. Under Siege (1992) starring Steven Seagal
What I love about this movie is it gets you with the comedy then slams you in the face with Riggs coping with PTSD. Being prior LE myself everyone forgets we're human too and are dealing with that shit
Among the things I love about this film is how they carried along with the joke about Murtaugh's wife's bad cooking until the last scene. Lol
I always liked the dislocated shoulder scene.
@@TackJorrance always watched 1 and 2 back to back. Guess some scenes blurred between them.
And part 3 and part 4
"The 80's was an era of extremes" I don't know what to tell you, I was 14 in '88 and I saw this movie, Die Hard, Terminator, Robocop, Total Recall, Evil Dead and all those movies growing up on vhs in my house with my family, without a problem.
Big trouble in little China!
YES.
Al Leong is in that too!
I do love Em's laugh. 😜Makes my day.
There was no HIPPA in the 80's, the privacy was implied but not legally enforced.
This is on my x-mas list, diehard, Lethal weapon, gremlins, back to the future and it's a wonderful life, every year.
Ever since watching Gremlins, when that girl talks about suicide happening more when people are lonely during Christmas, Lethal Weapon has made much more sense as a Christmas movie.
If you're fans of Danny Glover then you've got to watch Predator, to get to Predator 2. Imagine Officer Murtagh in a post apocalyptic LA, fighting aliens. Gary Busey shows up again, too.
And there's also the Shane Black connection there, too. He was an actor in Predator, then went on to write & direct The Predator
@@WedgeTheEagle And also Steve Kahan, who plays Captain Murphy is in both Predator 2 and Maverick :)
Another underrated Mel Gibson film is Maverick. Great reaction guys. Hope to see the Lethal Weapon sequels reactions in the future
Which you should only watch if you have watched LW first. Many reactors don't do that.
Bit of trivia - Danny Glover's wife is played by Darlene Love, singer of the holiday classic Christmas (Baby Please Come Home). This was her first acting job.
Fun Fact: The fight scene at the end was orchestrated by Rorion Gracie, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master and co-founder of the UFC.
Cool!
Fun Fact: I once attended a Gracie BJJ seminar which was done by Rorion and Royce. Over two 6 hour days, they taught 200 people better than I've seen instructors teach a room of 10.
National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 should be on the list after this (Edit: After Lethal Weapon 2, actually!) . Is it on the list? Imma check...
Edit: It's on the list. Awesome!
Better wait after LW2. The trailer scene.
@@zvimur That's a very good point, I can't believe I forgot about that scene.
PLEEEEEEASE watch all 4 of them, it’s my favourite film series and I’m so glad you liked this film 😁😁
Can't wait for you to see the parody version of this film, unless you've already seen it! (Loaded weapon)
Oh goodness gracious, that movie is hysterical and surprisingly star-studded!
Loaded Weapon 1
Before that they should watch Basic Instinct.
@@burni82 And they should watch Silence of the lambs.
@@totomomo18 Oh, riiiiiiight! Thank you!
If you want a nearly forgotten movie with Mel Gibson, give Conspiracy Theory (1997) a try
Oh, from memory...that as actually quite good (British quite where quite means quite and not very lol).
I love Conspiracy Theory!
Great movie
And Ransom.
I think I love each and every movie in this series, unlike Die Hard.
I would love to see you guys react to Big Trouble In Little China. Way too few reactions on this masterpiece on the internet.
Masterpiece ?
MASTERPIECE ! You were not brought upon this world to "get it" Mr. Burton.
Big Trouble In Little China is an amazing movie and was way ahead of it's time and highly influential.
YES! It's a great movie. Also, Emily needs to watch more movies with Al Leong in them, and she needs to start watching movies with James Hong in them.
@@waterbeauty85 if Al Leong was in your movie, it was a great movie. He was the Hench-pin...if you will....
Emotional support teddy is there for us all in times of great need.
Going to throw out two 90's films I do not see on the list which i believe have not been mentioned before and that is Demolition Man and Speed. For a Series, I will also throw out the Indiana Jones series. I will also toss out Broken Arrow just for the heck of it.
YES to ALL!!!!!
Need to keep watching the Lethal Weapon movies until we get to the flame thrower
"I just wanted to see if you would do it!"
Criticial Role reference right off the bat! I love it!
With that out of the way, this is one of my favourite movies of all time. The chemistry between Riggs and Murtaugh is amazing, the film's texture is so grounded and genuine, the majority of characters feel very real, and the balance between seriousness and humour is just perfect.
“It’s an 80’s action movie sooo....you’re wrong”. Probably the only time he’ll get away with saying that. 😂
This is one of my favorite movies. I'm glad you guys did it. I hope you go on and do the rest of them. They're all good. I love how you pointed out the music.
I think this is one of the few cases where the quality remains consistent across all 4 films. They're all great.
Richard Donner, who directed all 4 films in the series, recently said that number 5 is in active development. Both Gibson and Glover will be returning for 1 final film to put the series to bed.
7:24 reminds me so much of that line in "Mystery Date": "You know how women always say they want a man who's mature? That mens they want a man who *wears glasses.*
Shane Black did write the first Lethal Weapon movie however he was pulled out of the project while making Lethal Weapon 2 because the director of all 4 Richard Donnor wanted more of a comedic approach between the 2 characters while Shane Black wanted the sequel to be more darker than the first movie. Shane Black was credited for writing the characters but not the screenplay for 2,3 and 4
Shane Black who was Hawkins in Predator with Arnold written and directed I think a direct sequel to Predator 1 & 2 - 2018's The Predator.
People also forget that Richard Donner directed The Omen.
You have to watch the rest too... The characters are built really nicely over the entire thing and the balance of serious stuff and humour doesn't get old. With one of the craziest things being revealed in the fourth movie...
Great thing about these movies is the chemistry between Danny Glover and Mel Gibson. You really get to see their friendship develop over the course of these four movies.
The perfect buddy cop movie. Another 80's classic.
Really loving your movie reactions. I took a look at your “to watch” list and was surprised that Demolition Man wasn’t there. Would be great to see that one! Cheers!
RIP the brilliant Richard Donner.
Interesting Fact. When Mel jumped off the building with the guy. The handcuffs snapped. Stuntmen both had to quickly grab each others hands but it was left in the final film 😂
16:22 Jackie Chan said on this topic, that he never liked seeing himself blinking while shooting a gun on screen. So after the directors "action" he took his gun, shot it once in the air and then pulled it infront of him to shoot immediately without closing his eyes.
They edited out the air shot and his blinks were gone.
One of my favorite TV shows growing up was The Fall Guy, so yeah, I wanted to be a stuntman too.
Matthew's Greatest Quote: 20:26 "It's an 80's action movie so... you're wrong."
Is she wearing a shirt with Benny from Total Recall on it?
He needs the royalties, man, he’s got fiiiiive kids to feed.
Watching Emily crack up is one of my high points, followed by the look of disgust from Matthew at her jokes/puns. (My gf does the exact same look at me at my puns, though....mine are normally more R rated, or X rated....lol
Same with me and my wife. But most times she doesnt get my humour.
If you liked this one, you'll love LW2.
Fun fact: I heard back in the day that Die Hard: With a Vengeance with Samuel L. Jackson, was actually supposed to be a Lethal Weapon installment.
So many 80s films were “are they/aren’t they” Christmas movies lol
They all are don't you young folks be trying to tell us 80s kids any different.
@Mitchell Beston Trees, stockings, explosions, heroin shipments, and chestnuts roasting on an open fire.
This one definitely was NOT a Christmas movie.
@@osculim I am an 80s kid lol
@@tj_2701 it literally contains the phrase "It's g**damned CHRISTMAS!" So yeah, it's a Christmas movie.
One of the best buddy cop Action Comedies ever made!
I hope "the Last Boyscout" is on the list, and maybe also "the Long Kiss Goodnight."
Those two are absolutely brilliant, and Shane Black’s more recent (somewhat more humorously skewed) KissKissBangBang and The Nice Guys I think are also great. If you like Black’s style definitely get those ones watched.
Add in The Monster Squad just for the hell of it
The long kiss goodnight is fantastic, it has a speech about a CIA false flag operation to blow up the world trade centre, and blame it on the Muslims, so that they get a budget increase. It was made in the early 90’s
Die Hard and Lethal Weapon are definitely Christmas movies. Just ask my wife and kids in our house it's not Christmas until Hans Gruber goes out the window.
Benny's the name!
Tango and Cash would be a funny react for cheesy action
15 IN THE MAG AND ONE IN THE PIPE. FINEST OF THE FINE 80s CLASSICS. SO IS LETHAL WEAPON 2. BRILLIANT BOTH. 3 & 4 ARE OK.
@@Lloyd-Franklin "MAG" MAGAZINE IS A BOX THAT SHELLS ARE PLACED INTO & PUT INTO THE BOTTOM OF GUNS. "CLIPS" ARE METAL STRIPS WHERE SHELLS ARE ATTACHED & THE WHOLE RIG IS PLACED USUALLY THROUGH THE TOP OF THE ACTION ON A FIREARM.
@@Lloyd-Franklin Clip is often misused in movies, TV series and video games when they really should be saying Magazine. A good way to remember: "Clips feed Magazines, Magazines feed Guns".
For something WAY more in depth see this: ruclips.net/video/G3zQb3KZpNM/видео.html
Add "Good Night, and Good Luck" to your list. It's arguably even more relevant in 2021 than ever.
Love your videos! For the record, Shane Black only really wrote this Lethal Weapon (his script for Part 2 was changed greatly and he really had nothing to do with 3 & 4), plus, if it helps, I´m actually a friend of Steven de Souza, who wrote Die Hard, and he maintains 100% that it is a Christmas movie! Keep up the good work!
The fact you just name dropped Critical Role just made me love you guys even more!
'Bidet. And cheers to the Grand Pooobah Dadoink Strongjaw.
Critters unite!
Yep, we’re huge fans of Critical Role.
Thanks for watching and commenting!

"There's gonna be _so_ much _paperwork_ to do."
Yeah. Time was, we, as a society, understood that was a fundamental part of _law_ enforcement. You want to wear a _badge?_ You've got to be comfortable behind the _desk._ You've got to be comfortable doing _paperwork._ That was an indispensable part of the _job._
I lovad your reaction again, really well done. Cutest laugh from Emily, when she named Furbank.
I know it shouldn't be lik that, but when I clicked on the video, I immediately gave thumb up to not forget later, But with the experience I have with your reaction, it wasn't risk at all.
The best thing about the lethal weapon saga is the chemistry between Riggs and Murtagh. They bounce off each other.
16:21 - Is it possible not to blink when you shoot?
Mila Kunis (Jackie from 70's Show and Meg's voice from Family Guy) shoots without blinking when firing machine guns in the film Max Payne (2008).
Check it ... I am sure she is a psycho killer :D
"He's squirrely. I guess he did just do some coke." Nice :)
Yeah, when you are used to firearms you can control your blinking. You sight with both eyes open and hold both breath and eyes-open until after the shot (shots if semi-automatic/controlled burst/tightly timed single round) and then choose to blink after a slight pause, repeat as needed and at what speed based on rate/style/target details). Different handling of full-automatic weapons, of course. But yeah, firing common-use civilian or military weapons that aren't full-automatic it's both-eyes sighting with conscious breath and blink control.
The iconic buddy cop film.
I love all 4 films
Lookin forward to seeing your reactions to the rest of the Lethal Weapon franchise! Also, you might wanna see The Last Boy Scout & The Long Kiss Goodnight from Shane Black.
Definitely agree on the Last Boy Scout!
They should do a reaction to the last action hero too
The officer at 7:26 that Emily makes fun of his glasses is played by don gordon who played as delgetty in the 1968 movie bullit alongside Steve McQueen
Sometimes, your morning mouthwash is the beer you left on the sink the night before. Been there, done that, still doing that.
34:40 -- The house explosion was larger than anticipated and pilots approaching LAX called it in unaware that a movie was being shot..
Just in case you don't know, Gibson line "lifestyles of the rich and shameless" is a riff on the 80's reality show "Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous". The tag line was "Champagne Wishes and Caviar Dreams" It was huge.
I wrestled as a kid too. Outside, in my moms basement tearin up the furniture 😂 good times lol hopefully u guys watch the rest of the series. Love these movies
wow, didn't know that myself about the music, thanks! another gerat vid of you both :)
The whole Lethal Weapon's quadrilogy is 💪🏾. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover want to make a fifth film.
The lethal weapon franchise are flawless so well made the attention to detail and continuity all so perfect
I enjoyed all four movies in this series. The second one ups the comedy with Leo Getz character, as well as the fourth.
Yeah, Leo is great.
I'm the same way! I see Die Hard more Christmasy than LW, so weird, can't quite explain it... PLEASE watch the rest, one of my favorite series ever!
Something people don't realize: after the building jump scene when Gibson puts the gun under his mouth, Glover says "ow" because he did pull the trigger on a loaded gun
Your husband is mentioning Robert Patrick who played bad Cyborg, T-1000. He trained for weeks on his blinking. There is a clip of him as T-1000 firing a gun without blinking.
I just rewatched the Lethal Weapon movies over the holidays. I forgot how great these movies are! I hope you watch them all, they're great!
OK!
May i ask if 3 Essential Movies of the 80s are on your list.
1. LadyHawke
2. The Mosquito Coast
3. Bachelor Party (BOOBIES And Tom Hanks for Em)
I think She'll love Lady Hawke, which will lead you to The Hitcher
LOVE y'all. LOVE her laugh, so always more comedy!!
The writing in this film is just the best, all of them are in my top 10. :)

142) Point Break (1991)
178) Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)
187) Johnny English Strikes Again (2018)
206) Naked Gun (1988)
209) Kingsman: the Secret Service (2015)
238) Naked Gun 2 and a ½ (1991)

Man, the things you never think about. Roger Murtaugh and Martin Riggs: initials are RM and MR.
You recognised Al Leong from Die Hard!
One of us! One of us!
the psychiatrist is the newsreader in die hard as well
I believe that this is a Christmas movie just like It's a Wonderful Life. Riggs' character is comparable to George Bailey in that movie. They both felt they had no reason to live and were intent on killing themselves until guardian angels came into their lives. Murtaugh ends up being Riggs' guardian angel and he has a reason to live when he feels like a part of Murtaugh's family.
Lmao THAT WAS MY SUGGESTION!
GC POOBAH!!!!! Gotta love the Flintstones!
Lol not sure if I was the only one who suggested it tho.
Great movie, watch 2, 3 and 4 as well :)
Roger has a lovely family.
You guys are delightful and I loved this review/reaction! New fan here.
The jazz riffs made me realize that you must watch The Other Guys with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg (oh and a hysterically subtle Michael Keaton).
My inner nerd was happy when Critical Role was mentioned at the beginning. All I could hear was Travis yelling "WE PLAY DUNGEONS AND DRRRRRRRAAAAAAAGGGGGGOOOOOOOOONNNNNNSSSSSSS!!!"
I read that the director, Richard Donner, had just finished filming Scrooged (1988) when he begin filming Lethal Weapon. He was still in those christmas vibes when filming, hence the Christmas theme in Lethal Weapon, so, yes I would say it is indeed a Christmas movie.
