My wife had a Toyota Camry that for some reason was better than they claimed. I have no idea how it happened, but she was getting 46 miles per gallon. We never thought of it until we made a trip to Califuckednia. We left Mesa Arizona on a full tank and we got to San Diego non stop, and didn’t put gas until 3 days later on the way back home when we stopped in Yuma… burning 13 of the 17 gallons. good car, most issues are relatively easy to fix. the BIGGEST issue with 2gr-fe engine is oil leaks(timing cover, valve cover leaks). also rear bank spark plugs and coils are not easy to replace. infamous VVT oil line can burst and, of course, water pumps can fail. other than that, with regular maintenance this car can last for a long time.

Dear Scotty, I don't know if you will see this but I now have my late Father-in-law's 06 Avalon XLS with 217,000 miles. Everything is just like you described, quiet, powerful, gets 30+ mpg. AC is cold. The only thing that is a little off about it is that it throws codes when I go over 80-85 mph. It cuts out like a cylinder or two stopped working. Then it limps along until I stop for for 7 or 8 hours or overnight then it starts up perfect again. If I keep it under 80 nothing ever happens. I recently had the plugs and coils all replaced. My Mechanic says just keep it under 80 and enjoy it, what do you say?
Ahoy Scottie, thanks for the great review. The small opening from the back seat to the trunk was a great design and perfect to allow alpine skis to fit in the car! If that opening was not there, then you would need to mount a ski carrier that looked like a coffin to the roof of the car!
Yes the codes for the Hondas check your gas cap . My daughter put gas in and later check engine light came on . Took had codes read they told my wife needs new catalytic converter. Reset code and checked gas cap problem solved. May God bless everyone!
we have an 01 with 150k miles. LOVE the dash of the earlier body style. much less plastic. More inline with the higher quality imports had in the 90's. leather looks new. has typical catalyst below threshold like all old toyotas, but runs great.
I always suggested these. The packaged out camry, and the avalon is the most luxury, non-luxury cars I even been in. Sadly the appeal of these are for older demographic. These avalons have all the space, power gas millage you can ever want with a great ride. It's hard to pass on these. If i was in the market for a car its a top tier buy.

I beg to differ :) my ex father in law worked at Bodine Aluminum in Bridgeton, MO for decades. They were owned by Toyota making parts for production vehicles. Toyota’s goal was 60% US made parts on North American made vehicles.
Yeah, if I remember correctly, the Mach-E “Mustang” was originally supposed to be the Mach-E Escape, but they rebranded it last minute to get more sales as a “Mustang”. The only ones I’ve seen that come close to real Mustangs are the track models in the commercials/tests that are so heavily modified they’re totally different vehicles. Nice enough electric SUV’s, but definitely not “Mustangs”. Sacrilegious to call them “Mustangs”, in my personal opinion. Great find with the Avalon! Those are fantastic cars! I had a ‘99 and it ran fabulous as long as I had it. Miss that car!
Ford saved the Mustang in 2005 by going retro with the styling.... only to fall back into modernist perversion of the car in 2010. I don't see Ford ever going back to the Mustang as a cheap fast car for the masses. It's time to retire the Mustang for good.

I’ve got a 2000 Toyota Avalon XLS with the 3.0L 1MZ-FE V6 and 4-speed automatic transmission with 252,000 miles on it. I’ve done a couple of relatively big jobs to it before, but it’s still on its original engine and transmission. My original alternator also finally went out at around 200,000 miles. It’s had religious full synthetic oil changes its whole life every 5,000 miles. One of the best cars Toyota ever made for the North American market!
Leather is more durable than cloth. Leather just needs to be cared for (use a leather conditioner twice a year) and cloth needs to be steam cleaned. Thanks for all your tips Scotty, I appreciate your knowledge and guidance 🙂🇨🇦

My wife had a 2006 Avalon Touring brand new. Year later we started smelling raw gas smell through the ac vents. We got the run around from Toyota claiming that they couldn’t duplicate the issue. We dumped it shortly afterwards. All these years later the forums are full of this issue being common on Avalon’s.
What I hate about post millennium leather interiors is that the seat padding is thinner and more dense (harder)! So the plastic coated leather won’t sag n bag more over time and wear. Nuttin like the seats of an 87 Park Avenue that for sure. Was like riding around sitting on a sofa, 9-10 hr drive, not problem.

good car, most issues are relatively easy to fix. the BIGGEST issue with 2gr-fe engine is oil leaks(timing cover, valve cover leaks). also rear bank spark plugs and coils are not easy to replace. infamous VVT oil line can burst and, of course, water pumps can fail. other than that, with regular maintenance this car can last for a long time.
I have a 2010 Avalon XLS ! I got it 4.5 years ago with 38K miles now it’s at 86K I’m gonna keep it running forever! I change the oil every 3K with synthetic.
How much did you pay?
Well still be in no danger if you let oil stay afew more miles car is great you don't have to change oil like old daze😆
@@henryguy4450 The sooner over 2500 you change it the healthier the motor stays
@@douglassmith9445 I bought a 2010 Avalon in 2021 for $13.5 with just 96k miles
It's great car
Every 3k with synthetic? You're throwing money away man
In a world where sustainability has become the buzzword to market almost everything, what you offer is true sustainability, promoting products that are made to last, and how to make them last. Appreciation for promoting this rare commodity today 🙏
Scotty, my 2008 Avalon Limited is going strong at 147k miles. Just put on new front brakes and a new set of Michelins. I can get over 30 mpg highway. Great car.
I totally agree with you on the Avalon I owned 4 of them and I just purchased a new 2022 knowing it would be the last new one made. You just can't beat them.
Toyota stopped making the Avalon, because it is more boring than Scotty ranting about Tesla. The truth is nobody is buying that piece of crap Avalon. I've seen some Avalons, 99% of the time an old person is behind the wheel!
@@alanladd4342 You need to get out of moms basement, instead of trying to make people believe anything you say makes any sense. My bet is you have some rusted out 30 year old junk daddy bought you. Get a life
Genuine question, Why was it that you’ve owned 4 if they were so good?
@@mynamedoesnotmatter737 I've owned 4 Avalons that I purchased for my wife since the 90's .Myself I owned many sports cars and others for decades. There's no question the Avalons were the best cars, I did nothing more than changed the oil and filters and normal maintenance for 30 yrs. and hundreds of thousands of miles. Avalons now have the best most reliable 300 hp V6 engines in any car, plus they have a fantastic ride and the upgrades in 2018 made them handle very well. IMO don't know of any car for the money that's any better
OK now they have 300 hp engines because when i rented a new one 15 years ago and went from Sacramento to Reno the power to pull up hills was weak, i wasn't impressed with its pulling power.
Between me and my kids we've owned 5. All first and 2nd gen and never been disappointed
My sister’s boyfriend sold his Avalon for a Subaru WRX STI that’s broken down on him twice already 😂
i would rather the WRX there good cars
Big mistake
Whew what a horrible decision 😅😂
My friend Pat still has his Avalon..gave it to his oldest daughter. Excellent car..has a lot of go in the gas pedal!! Great car..lot of features!!
I have an 05 Avalon with 201K that my daughter drives now. The only thing it needs in the cruise control switch. It has been meticulously maintained over its life. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it across the country.
My 2006 Toyota Avalon touring is 200,000+ miles and still running strong. I love it and plan on supercharging it.
We loved our Avalon the only issue we had was the headlights. They were very expensive to fix other then that great car.
Maybe it could just be a fuse and not the bulb

I bought one of these in 2019 from someone who didn’t know what it was they had. Paid $3500 cash for one with 202,000 miles. Now sitting at 236,000. We drive it mostly around town but we use it as our out of town car too. LOVE IT!!!
Paid $2300 for a similar car just last December. Really still impressed at the power this baby makes.
with 99k miles on it too 😅
You can sell it for more easily now
I bought mine February 23rd from someone with minor damage with 17x,xxx (almost 180,000) miles on it for $3,800. Now I have just a few hundred miles over 190,000. I plan on doing upgrades little by little. It's a keeper.

I handed my 2006 Avalon XLS to my son after loving it for years in my over the road sales days. Still runs great still has the original suspension 326k miles and we hope it will last until he graduates from college! Love Toyota/Lexus products

Scotty would be waving his hands like crazy if he were driving one of Jay's steam cars!
I've had 5 avalons...all run to about 200k and then sold and got another used one at 50k miles...for rediculous prices....love them!
My dad had 2 Avalons after owning 55 other cars, and he always said they were the best he'd ever owned. The 1998 is still going.

He is quit Comfortable
I'm serious when I say this. I'm sure the sheer amount of money he makes can be a nuisance. I can't imagine he enjoys the accounting and tax demands his exceptional success has brought.
Scotty must have a garage with some crazy machines somewhere. His son's are fixing up old Camaros, its looks like.

He probably uses an accountant to fill in his tax forms.
The best car I've ever owned in Australia.
Still going strong and reliable.
Regards, Brian Dwight
Yes the codes for the Hondas check your gas cap . My daughter put gas in and later check engine light came on . Took had codes read they told my wife needs new catalytic converter. Reset code and checked gas cap problem solved.
May God bless everyone!
I luckily have an '06 Avalon Limited. I find it better than most new cars these days
I am confident now in my decision to buy an older Avalon for my next car.
Idea. Scotty should go to local high-schools and be a guest speaker at auto class (shop). He has so much experience. Share it with students.
we have an 01 with 150k miles.
Just lost my 225k mile 08 xls last week in a collision. I owned it for 5 years and had every intention to drive it another 10 at least. Low maintenance. Powerful. Comfortable and reliable. Can't wait to find another.

My dad had an Avalon & loved it: beautiful driving car, comfortable, luxurious, nice looking too
Reliable car, but I had to replace an oil control valve on my 4th gen 2016 Avalon Touring at 79,000 miles, even though I change my oil every 5,000 miles with quality oil. Same 2grfe engine with updated parts. The car now has 81,000 miles. It was a $140 fix because I did the job myself 😉
I have a 2003 Avalon and its been incredibly reliable.

It has heated and ventilated seats it has all electric seats the rear seats recline. It has remote start remote start and so many other options that I didn't think you can get in 2005 and with 280 horsepower the car is not slow. I have had newer cars that didn't have as many options in it as this car has. I only have it for a week and a half and I can already say hands down the best car that I have ever had
