How to complete the boat scene in Silent Hill 2 on Hard using PCSX2 and your mouse

- Maybe someone will find this useful. If you want to play the PS2 version of SH2 using an emulator and you're going for 10-star ranking, you need to play on Hard, and the boat controls there are... well, complicated. If you don't really want to buy a controller just to beat a short scene in a single game, here's what you need to do:
1. Open your gamepad plugin settings in PCSX2 and make sure the following options are selected in the General tab:
- "Windows messaging" for Mouse API is selected,
- "Start without mouse focus" is NOT selected,
- "Multiple bindings" for Pads are selected.
2. Open the Pad1 tab. Find "Right Analog Stick" and bind its positions as follows:
- click Up and move your mouse up,
- click Down and move your mouse down,
- click Left and move your mouse left,
- click Right and move your mouse right.
Check that the bindings are correct in the left list (they should be the same as shown here).
3. Start the game and load your save near the boat. You can go to the Extra Options menu (accessed by pressing the left or right strafe keys in the common Options menu) and set Walk/Run Control to Reverse, which will make James run by default.
4. Enter the boat. As soon as the cutscene ends, start rotating your mouse counter-clockwise. You don't have to move it fast, just rotate it steadily. This will make James turn right since we have bound our mouse to the right stick. You need to do this for about 7 seconds (or just count how many times James is turning his head and looking back; 4 times is enough).
5. Press Esc to pause the game and go to the gamepad settings again. This time, in the Pad1 tab, bind the positions of the left stick as well:
- click Up and move your mouse up,
- click Down and move your mouse down,
(now the next two are different from before, so be careful)
- click Left and move your mouse RIGHT,
- click Right and move your mouse LEFT.
6. Return to the game and start rotating your mouse clockwise this time. If you haven't set Walk/Run Control to Reverse, you should also press your Run key (mine is set to Shift as usual, but yours can be different). This will make both sticks rotate in opposite directions at the same time, in perfect synchronization, which will propel the boat forward. The boat will also continue to turn right for a while, so it should eventually align with the lamppost light ahead. A little misalignment, like shown in the video, is okay, but if it's more than that, you'll most likely have to restart again and time your turning more accurately.
If you failed to align the boat with the light and need to repeat the sequence from the start, you should delete all mouse bindings first. Then continue from step 2.
This solution will easily allow you to beat the boat scene faster than 1 minute 20 seconds (I've got 1 minute 16 seconds for the attempt that you can see here). 10 star ranking requires you to be faster than 1 minute 30 seconds, so it's definitely possible. Good luck!

Im playing through the first 3 silent hill games now on pcsx2 because of the new chapter. It wouldn't surprise me if im not the only one. At least i hope I'm not the only one because Silent Hill 1 blew me the fuck away and im really enjoying Silent hill 2.
